I'm sorry that the first review I write for Angie's List has to be such a negative one, but I've done several jobs with Thomas Marble and Granite and each has had some glitch. I foolishly stuck with them because of their price -- I was always able to deal with the problems by giving them enough time (in one case several months) to fix the issue or getting a credit back or just doing without (in the case of a missing piece of backsplash in an area that conveniently could just be painted and not look terrible wrong.) On my last project, though, I had to throw in the towel and vow to never use them again. On this last project, Mr. Thomas Cervantes, the company's owner, measured the kitchen and explained that the "l" shape of the counter would require use of two slabs of granite. We agreed on a location for the seam, but when the granite was installed, the two slabs were laid out with the veins in the granite running different directions! The pattern in one slab was perpendicular to the other, making the seam location quite apparent. I spoke with Mr. Carlos Cervantes, the owner's son and company's primary salesperson, who felt the manner they chose to install the granite was the best way it could be done. I asked for it to be removed and re-done with all the veins running the same direction, but he stated that they didn't have any more of that stone in the shop and offered a credit of $250. I didn't accept it and told him I needed to consider my options. The following day, Mr. Alan Cervantes called to let me know they would replace the piece in question, and asked me to come to the shop to be sure we were all in agreement as to what needed to be done before they cut the stone. (Interestingly, I saw several slabs of the granite in question as I walked through the shop -- not sure why I was told they didn't have any.) Carlos showed me a marked up piece of granite and we agreed that he had laid it out properly. Here's where I admit fault -- because they were showing good faith in correcting the mistake promptly, I paid them the balance owed. Looking back, it was foolish, but I had worked with them many times and felt we had an understanding. But that's MY problem... They installed the new piece within a few days. Guess what -- it was a horrible match! Clearly taken from a totally different slab. Photos attached. I texted Carlos about my disappointment and asked him to meet me to look at it. He did not reply, so a couple days later I went to the shop, where both Carlos and Thomas Cervantes were working. I expressed my concerns and frustration to Carlos -- he wouldn't agree to come to the house, told me that I had approved the granite. I felt my earlier trip to the shop had been to be sure that the initial problem with the pattern was corrected. I explained that I couldn't have stood there and compared the piece they had chosen as a replacement to the installed counters 4 miles away. When they arrived at the house with the replacement and saw it was not appropriate, they should have stopped work. Carlos conferred with Thomas Cervantes privately, then told me there was nothing he could do. I have not heard from them since. I have advised Carlos that I would be reporting the incident to Angies List and if he choses to correct the error, I will gladly report back on the resolution. If Thomas Marble does not make the required repairs, I will hire another company to correct the problem before putting the house up for sale.
