They were prompt and came right out. They gave me an expensive estimate. So I ended up going with someone else who was about 1/5 of the price.

Some switch in my gas furnace was stuck and would not allow the furnace to ignite. The technician "unstuck" it. Its been working ever since. The tech indicated that if it happens again, I should get a new one. The furnace is 10yrs. old. The Technician was "TEDDY;" a very honest man. He's great.

My tenants said the thermostat wasnt responding and the radiator heat was constantly either on or off. Rod Miller company, who we had used before, came to assess the situation and needed to come back with the right equip to fix it. When they did the job, they replaced an aquastat and had to run a wire to the thermostat. They asked permission to cut a hole in the ceiling to run the line. We said fine. They ran the line. It works and the tenants are happy. $920 seems a tad high to me, but of course its all a foreign language to me so what do I know. They did say they needed 2 people to run the line and only charged me for one.
Description of Work: Diagnosed why the thermostat wasnt responding, replaced an aquastat and ran a new line to the thermostat one floor above.

The technician showed up during the estimated arrival time. He was professional in his disposition, thorough in both the examination and explanation of the HVAC unit that he found, mindful of details, and patient in answering questions. I found the service to be prompt, reliable, and professional -- all things that I value. I have selected a service plan with the company and look forward to seeing them again in the spring.

Sach was the technician and he was excellent. He was prompt and professional and seemed to really know what he was doing. I had previously had another company come to look at my system and they said it was unusual and they could not service it. Sach had no such problems, knew exactly what it was and how to maintain it at first look. He gave it a thorough going over, checked all the systems, heat and air, even walked through the condo checking output and flow from each register and advised me on how to make the system work more efficiently in the winter. The system requires an unusually large filter, he helped me locate an online source to order it, checked and re-checked the measurements to make sure I got the right thing, and offered to come back when it arrives to install it for me if I had trouble doing it myself. I was so pleased with the service that I purchased an annual maintenance contract with Rod Miller.

System worked all weekend and the Rod Miller tech showed up on time Monday to check things out. He didn't have to actually fix anything, so no charge, but he told me what it will cost when that component fails for good. As always, he was friendly and helpful.
Description of Work: At 4p on a Friday -- the hottest day of the year -- my a/c presented a "failure" message and stopped working. I called Rod Miller and the service manager, Dave, took me step by step thru the troubleshooting process until the system was working again. He also put me on the schedule for first thing Monday morning, and told me what to do if the system failed again over the weekend.

They installed the furnace quickly and professionally and improved the nature of the installation -- the previous furnace had not been done well. The best part was their response 8 months afterwards when we had some issues with a tenant and they told me they had done more at the time of installation then they had originally told me -- this was checking the ducts to see if they needed cleaning. They never told me because the ducts did not need cleaning. This helped the tenant feel better. .In addition, they came out to go over the installation to see if the settings were correct to assure me that no glitches existed in the system that might be a problem for the tenant. All was in order.

We have used this company before, and got the same technician, Teddy, as before; he has always been excellent. He quickly diagnosed the noise coming from our boiler as being a worn out boiler release valve and condensate pump. He had to return a few days later after these parts were ordered. He spent the whole afternoon flushing black nasty stuff out of the whole system. He explained that, essentially, our disregard of annual maintenance had led to over-demand on the condensate pump, so that it wore out, and this was the reason it took all afternoon to flush out the system - we should have been having that flushed out annually. He did let us know, in no uncertain terms, that we needed to start doing this annual maintenance, and if we neglected it for years again, he would not be inclined to go through this same process again. We took our lumps; it really was neglect on our part. Teddy remembered our boiler, having worked on it in prior years. When, subsequent to his work, our pipes began to clang when the boiler came on, he returned, and, when unable to diagnose the problem, had his boss come by. That problem ultimately solved itself with the passage of a few more weeks, as Teddy's boss had thought would happen. Overall we have been very happy with several service calls with Rod Miller over the years and will definitely use them again.

I called more than a month ago for some help with my mini-split AC units. I asked the person on the phone if they could finish the installation of our mini split units. We had a contractor disappear half-way through the previous install. They said that they could send someone out between 1 and 4pm. The person showed up at 8pm. He had no tools, no ladder, no truck. He looked at the situation and said that he would need tools to perform the work. So, we rescheduled. The second person showed up on time. Also without a truck. Without a ladder. And without tools to perform the work. I was very specific with the dispatcher about how much work this would be, that it would be a full day job, etc. The guy had no notes of this. We asked him to call the office, but he said he had to go to another service call and that we would have to call the office and reschedule with someone who had the appropriate tools. Again. So we called the office again. Got a call back a couple of days later. This time, we were told that we needed to talk with someone else in the company who could advise us. So we waited another day to talk to that person. When he called, he said that they didn't want to do the job because they hadn't sold us the A/C units. A month into the process, after no fewer than 20 calls to their office and two on-site visits, they said that they didn't want to do the job. Save yourself the trouble and find someone else. I honestly don't understand why they had good reviews here. Maybe if you are having something simple done, this is the place to go. For anything even somewhat complicated, I would avoid them like the plague. AVOID.

Response from Rod Miller Heating and Air Conditioning Company
We have taken many calls from customers who started with a contractor, but were abandoned by the contractor. The former contractors leave customers angry, discouraged etc.We do not like to leave customers in the cold or in the heat, so we take the calls.. And in many cases, we have helped complete the work started by another contractor - service and installation, satisfactorily. In this case, however, what the heard from the was completely different from the reality when we got on site. We accept this responsibility. We should probably have gone on site first before making any promises to the customer. Our service manager was very apologetic when he explained to the customer. It was a very busy month. The situation could have been avoided had it happened in a low volume month.

I called on Wednesday for service and arranged a window from 12:00pm to 4:00pm on Friday for a service call because my air conditioning had not been working. I confirmed the appointment in the morning. I returned home from work before the time frame provided. At about 3:30pm I called the company to find out where my tech was. It was at that time, that I found out that he was running late and wouldn't be here until closer to 5pm. A little before 4pm, I received a call from the tech, Richard, who said he had one more call in DC and then he would come to my home. When I found out it was Richard, I stopped worrying since he had serviced my heat back in the winter. We agreed that I could run a couple of errands and that he would call me when he was nearing my home. He called me and we arrived at my house at the same time - about 5:00pm. Since he had serviced my unit back in December, he was very familiar with what needed to be completed. He connected a few wires, checked my filter, topped off my freon and in less than an hour, I had my A/C. As a consumer, the biggest fear is that you will have to pay an arm and a leg for a new unit when you air conditioning is not work. That would not the case here. Richard performed ONLY the work that was required - no more, no less.
Description of Work: Fixed my A/C on one of the hottest days of this year.

When I renovated This Old House five years ago I had a 3-zone AC system installed and ducts run all over the house. Unfortunately I had major problems with two of the systems. One was under-dimensioned and could not cool the living room sufficiently, and the other one was leaking refrigerant. After numerous ineffective calls to my AC company at that time (Allstar Inc.), I called Rod Miller. Don came the next day and we inspected the systems and agreed on solutions to the problems. Don is very knowledgeable. The old 2-zone split Fujitsu system had to be replaced even though it was only 5 years old. We decided to go for a high-efficiency Bryant Evolution system with double the capacity for the living room. For the other zone (the basement) we would have liked to stay with the old Fujitsy, but that turned out the be impossible, since a split Fujitsu system cannot run with just one zone active. Kind of stupid, and cost me a lot of extra money to replace the basement system too. But Don was nice, and offered to replace that system at cost. The duct work for the new Bryant AC was complicated by the fact that Mitch and Michael had to work on a scaffold 14' above the floor and in an attic space only 18" high at the maximum. And the attic space was blown full of insulation material. It was a mess but they performed a very difficult and dirty job with good cheers and workmanship. The two new systems are now up and running perfectly. Just the right amount of air to make my living room pleasant, and very quiet. My hat off to Rod Miller for doing a great job. ps: And then the boiler started to make strange noises, so I called Rod Miller, who sent a service man out the same day. My heating system is rather complicated and includes radiant floor heat and solar heat on the roof. So the next morning Rod Miller sent out their best heating expert. We carefully diagnosed the problem together and found that the circulation pump on the boiler was defect. Luckily I had a great big Grundfos pump as a spare from when we first installed the heating system. We replaced the defect pump with that and I saved a lot of money instead of having to buy a pump from Rod Miller. This goes to show the flexibility of Rod Miller. I respect their expertise and workmanship highly.
Description of Work: Rod Miller replaced two of my AC systems with new high efficiency units. Complicated duct work was also involved to fit a new return duct in an !8" attic space. They also serviced my boiler and installed a new circulation pump.

I called the company to ask if they could send someone to find out why my heating system is so loud. They sent someone the same day who said for the most part the sound was normal and I needed to change the filters. I was charged the minimum, $105.
Description of Work: Technician came to see the reason why my heating/cooling system is loud. Only said I had to change the filter. The system still comes on very loudly, which seems unconnected to the filter problem. The company was able to send someone immediately. The problem with this company is that they have a $105 minimum, which in my case was excessive.

The technician came to the house and made the correct diagnosis - that is, replace the blower motor. Unfortunately, the total cost of the replacement probably would have run about $1,000. The new motor was about $500, labor about $200, and they were hard selling a maintenance contract for about $275. I contacted a friend of a a friend who did all the work perfectly for $310.00. So while Rod Miller seemed to know their stuff, the prices were just unreasonably inflated and that was unnessary. The motor only sells for $140, why the big mark-up. Seemed opportunitic to me.

My husband and I have been in a rented house in our neighborhood during the renovation of our home. When the weather got colder in November, we discovered the furnace in our rented house was only interested in blowing cold air. I called Rod Miller and they got me scheduled quickly for a diagnostic visit. The gentleman who showed up was very professional, walking me through and showing me exactly what the problem was. He seemed as disappointed as I was that it wasn't something that he could fix that day. The furnace was quite old, so they needed to order the parts, which meant a delay, but they were very good at communicating how long that would take, and prioritized our job to get it done first thing in the a.m. the day after the parts arrived late afternoon. There were two parts we replaced -- the one that had caused the problem, and a smaller less expensive part that the serviceman said was currently testing fine, but showed signs of corrosion and was well past its usual life. If that part had failed two months later, we would also have had no heat, and since it wasn't very expensive to replace that part, we (in consultation with our landlord) decided to go ahead at the same time. I did not feel like we were being sold additional services; I felt like the Rod Miller staff were open about the pros and cons of doing everything at the same time or waiting.

Richard, the Rod Miller HVAC Technician, arrived at my house by 8:30 AM on Tuesday morning. He began to diagnose my system inside my house. He was able to determine that the wiring to my new thermostat was crossed as was the wiring to my unit in my basement. As a result, the transformer was blown and needed to be replaced and he needed to re-install my thermostat. Because the wires to my thermostat were cut too short, he let me know that he may have to cut a hole in my wall to better access the wires and rewire the thermostat. He also had to order the transformer so as he left on Tuesday, he was able to provide an estimate for the parts/labor to make the repairs and we agreed that he can come out again today (Thursday AM) . Today, he came out as promised (again, arriving by about 8:30 AM). He re-installed the thermostat by cutting a small hole in the wall which is hidden by the thermostat (so therefore, no cosmetic damage). He replaced the transformer and he ensured that I got heat before he left. Unlike the first person who came out and told me it would take hours before my heat started to blow, Richard got my heat going immediately. He found some problems on my outside unit as well but we agreed that I could wait until after the 1st of the year to start working on those issues. Richard was honest, professional, knowledgeable, efficient and effective. The office staff was equally pleasant and responsive in setting up and confirming my appointments. From start to finish, this was a great experience. And best of all, after 2 years, I HAVE HEAT!!!
Description of Work: I recently moved back into my house and discovered that the heat had been out for about 2 years. With winter fast approaching, I was determined to get this fixed as soon as possible. I was referred to a friend of a friend who only managed to put my thermostat on, got my fan working, and told me that it would take a few hours for warm air to run. After several hours, my fan was still blowing cold air. After trying to get this "friend" to come back out to fix what he said he was going to fix over the course of two weeks, I called Rod Miller Heating and Air Conditioning on Monday morning. They had a technician out on Tuesday morning - first appointment of the day. He had to return today but now I have heat.

I purchased my house in 1996 and kept putting off getting the air ducts cleaned. Before choosing a vendor, I did a considerable amount of research on this site, the internet and by talking to neighbors. I originally chose one of the vendors listed on Angieslist that got excellent grades and was less expensive than Rod Miller. Their process sounded good and the customer service representative was extremely pleasant and responsive. When the 2 guy crew arrived though, they were the ones full of questions. Bottom line, it was clear they didn?t work on a lot of old houses with high roofs and questionable designs for where the vents had been placed throughout the house. They had a good 2-hose system but it would hve involved cutting a vent. I did not want to deal with the possible repercussions of that so I called Rod Miller who had been highly recommended by my contractor. They are used to dealing with old and new houses and spent hours in my house carefully opening up supply and return vents so that the paint wasn't ruined. They were also exceptionally careful with the dust. I had taped garbage bags all over my closet doors in fear that the close by vents would leak dust in through the vented door losets. hey didn?t. There was some dust but not nearly enough to justify my time-consuming taping precautions. The two man crew cleaned up thoroughly as they went along. They explained what they ere doing each step of the way and showed me the dust build-up. I am so glad this thorough cleaning was finally done. I paid a little more than I had budgeted but I?m confident it was done right and carefully leaving no mess behind and ceilings with very minimal paint damage where the vents were removed. I highly recommend Rod Mller. If you?re going to clean your vents, you might as well get it done right.

The fan on the furnace would run, but there was no heat. i called Rod Miller Heating and Air Conditioning, and a service person came out and determined that the pressure switch did not work causing the igniter not to light. The furnaces I had was in good condition, but the company went out of business, and there was a special piece that was needed to fix the problem. The service person tried to create a temporary fix until he could order the part, but it stops working a day later. It took two weeks to try and find the part, but it was never found the parts person tried to suggest replacing the who switch. The service person quickly came with a work around that saved me from having to buy a $200 part. This was a complicated issue, I appreciated the extra efforts they took to try to search for the part, and creating a viable work around The only issue I had is that when I would call I to check on the status of the part I would be promised my phone call would be returned.

I was impressed that they showed up as scheduled. However since I was assured that the repairs they preformed would fix my furnace and provide me with heat has not materialized, I am currently disgusted with their service. I believe that if you pay a company $1,000 for a job they assure you will fix the problem, the problem should be fixed and one should not have to go through what I am going through. Because of what transpired, I am currently giving the company an F rating.
Description of Work: I called Rod Miller Heating because my furnace wasn't working and wasn't producing heat. On October 26, a technician was sent to my house to determine why my furnace was not working. The technician was not experienced in fixing my type of furnace (I was told I have a boiler) and advised me that one of their other technician would have to come back on Monday to determine the problem and fix the furnace. I was assured that the repairs they would preform would fix the problem. Because of the storm, the technician was delayed in Thursday, November 1st. The technician told me what the problem was and the cost to fix it was $1,010. He advised me that he did not have the parts to fix it and would be back the next day. The technician arrived as scheduled the next day (Nov. 2nd), did the repairs and advised me that the problem was fixed and showed me that the base board heating was working. When I returned later that evening, I discovered that I didn't have any heat and the furnace wasn't working. I called the company the next day (Saturday, Nov. 3rd) to discover that the office was closed but I could speak with their on call technician. I advised the on call technician that my furnace was not working after the repairs were preformed yesterday. At first he stated that he would have to charge me if he came out to look at it because the company did not guarantee their work on the weekends. After explaining my problem again and telling him that I did not believe I should be charged for a service call, he advised me that he would have to call his manager to see if he could come look at the furnace. The on call technician call back to state that his manager said he could come look at the furnace. The technician arrived between the hours stated, looked at the furnace and could not resolve the problem since he was not experienced in fixing my type of furnace. All he could determine that the emergency relay switch kept going off and he the company would send someone out to look at the furnace on Monday, Nov. 5th. He stated that if I wanted heat in the house over the weekend I had to keep resetting the relay switch. I called the office Monday morning and spoke to Dave who advised me that someone would be at my house before 4pm today. At 330p no one had arrived at my house so I called back to ask Dave when they were going to come since no one would be at the house after 4p. He told me that they would have to come tomorrow since he could not get on one to my house within the next hour and a half. So as I am writing this review, this will be day 4 without heat.
