I was/am very dissatisfied with the work performed and the response that I received to rectify an issue encountered. I engaged J&G to repair the attic fan in April, trusted that the repair (replaced the motor) was successfully completed and paid $489 for this service. It wasn?t until one day in June when the temperature rose and the fan kicked on that I discovered that the fan was not securely bolted in place. The noise from the vibration of the fan was extremely loud and very concerning. On that day, I happened to have an air conditioner installer at my house looking at the AC unit in the attic who told me that the attic fan was not secured. Upon my inspection, I found that only one of the 3 screws/brackets was bolted (not sure of the terms but suffice to say that there were 3 screws but only one nut held the fan in place). When I called J&G and explained my issue, I believe that I spoke to Joey who told me not to use the fan. He indicated that he could send someone out to check on it but if they found nothing wrong, I would be charged for a service call. On that same day, Tony, the electrician who performed the work, called and said that he intentionally used only one bolt and repeated that he could come back but if he found nothing wrong, I would be charged the $150 service fee. I read between the lines (of course he would find nothing wrong if he intentionally used one bolt) and declined J&G's offers. After paying $489 for shoddy workmanship (my opinion), I refused to pay an additional $150 to J&G. Subsequently, I had someone else secure the fan and once secured, the fan did not work at all. Could that have been the reason why Tony did not secure all three screws? Don?t know the answer to that but I do know that nearly $500 that I spent was for nothing and J&G lost my business to heavy-up (upgrade) the electrical system in my home which based on Tony?s estimate would have been approximately a $5,000 job. In all fairness, J&G contacted me about a year later because my file was still considered open and they expressed concerned that I was dissatisfied with their work. After playing phone tag for a few days and knowing that I would not pay for their services, I just let it go.

It went just fine. I spent $49 more for the panel tune up. We asked them some questions about some other issues that we were having and he made what we thought were good recommendations. For us, it seemed like it was honest recommendation, he said it would cost some more money and said that he didn’t feel it was worth it to spend time and effort to make the change that would fix the issue with respect to my computer going off when my microwave was switched on. So he suggested rewiring and then all we had to do was not to run the microwave along with the computer, and I thought that made sense. The price was reasonable; it was fair.
Description of Work: I purchased a $175 big deal from them for whole house surge protection. They installed a surge protector and did a panel tune up.

AMAZING! As a relatively frugal and research-based customer, I made sure to get 5 different contractors and electricians to see and quote me the work to be done. Off the bat, Eric came in knowing exactly what to do. His first visit took 15 minutes (others took 30-45 min of mostly chatting BS), where he looked at what I was asking and he offered what he could do. He quoted me on the spot with an awesome price, that matched or beat other quotes. Aside from the price, out of all the electricians I spoke to, Eric was the only one that was confident and clear on how he would get the work done. All other providers were unable to resolve the issue with the phone line, which Eric was able to just knock it out of the park. I was happy to hire J&G. Booking was easy, over the phone, and quick to respond, setting up a clear timeframe. When other contractors were saying it would take one and a half days, Eric said it would take 4 hours. Made me suspicious, but after reading other reviews, and based on his confidence and style, I decided to go ahead with the work. On the day of work, Eric showed up exactly at the agreed upon time. He got to working, while I was working on my own job (work from home). He got the job done quickly, and talked out different options throughout the job, in case I felt like changing something. I did end up making some changes to his original plan based on changing circumstances and his suggestions. At the end of the job, he cleaned up (even though I offered to do it), and when I changed my mind on payment (credit card vs check), he had no problem (even though everyone prefers cash). I even found a last minute angieslist coupon, which he honored (I would have told myself to f-off). J&G Electric is a small family-owned operation with Eric and the owner. They are busy, but they made the time to meet my needs. I met with their competitors to get some comparable quotes, and the competitors were good as well, but the fact that J&G works by contracts instead of by hour, makes a huge difference in how they quote and how they work. I'm a fan and I'll be sure to hire them again for other upcoming projects.

Friendly, efficient and timely response to our pressing need -- very pleased with the result. Bank of ten recessed ceiling lights had flashed and gone out. After looking at the switches and discussing with manufacturer's customer service rep, decided to purchase replacement parts on-line and find an electrician to do the installation. Referred to Angie's List: reviews on first "A" provider were not uniformly positive, the second I contacted apologized but said he was too busy, but J&G's Eric -- whom I spoke with on Wednesday -- said he could fit me in between other jobs in DC on Friday morning. Parts arrived as scheduled Thursday, Eric arrived as scheduled Friday morning (exactly when he had estimated at our first conversation, with a follow-up call Friday morning), and the work was accomplished within 30 minutes. Charge was his minimum rate for a quick job, payable by check (or credit card with a 3% surcharge).

I had a light that wouldn't work and an exhaust fan that had never worked. While it was under warranty many years ago 3 different techs had replaced the motor and various other parts to no avail. We had given up and I had intended to have J and G replace it. However Eric said he'd take a look after he had quickly fixed the recessed light and was able to get the fan working. I was really amazed. Ended up saving me a lot of time and money. Eric was friendly and efficient. I plan to call them again soon to replace a chandelier. Highly recommended and priced well. Oh and he showed up early. Awesome.

The service provided was fantastic. When I called to inquire about the service Eric explained the pricing structure and he asked several questions to let me know the options for running the wires for the type of house that I live in. The day of installation, he gave me a call 30 minutes prior to arriving to let me know he was on his way and promptly started working. After he completed the work he took all the packaging with him for disposal and vacuumed up the area where he was working even though I told him he didn't have to. I plan to use them again for additional ceiling fan installation in other rooms.

The Big Deal was advertized as installation of two replacement hard-wired smoke detectors. J&G electric informed me that in order to ensure the guarantee of the two new detectors, I would need to replace any additional existing detectors to the tune of $129 each. I informed J&G that my five additional detectors were working fine,and that I did not want to replace them; I just wanted them to install the two new detectors that were part of the Big Deal. Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate your interest in J & G Electric Co., Inc. Our customers were very pleased with the Hardwired Smoke Detector Replacement Big Deal. The Deal stated that 2 hardwired smoke detectors would be replaced for $169.00 which is at a 47% savings. Smoke detectors should be replaced every ten years according to the National Fire Protection Association. The Deal clearly states the following “If more than 2 detectors are in the home that are hardwired, all must be replaced for proper operation and warranty of system. Each additional detector installed would be at $129.00, discounted from $158.50, a savings of $29.50.” We indeed re-iterated this information to Mr. Winder prior to proceeding. Unfortunately, Mr. Winder did not understand the necessity for uniformity of all the detectors to ensure proper operation due to inter-connectivity. I hired J&G to repair damage caused by a large branch falling on the wires running to our house. While I was initially satisfied with the work I've come to feel that I've been 'played'. In my efforts to get the damage fixed quickly I was not critical enough of the situation as it was going on. Joey arrived on time and was pleasant enough to deal with, in doing his work he noted that a piece was missing (the cap to the weather head). I was running out to grab lunch while Joey made his repairs and he mentioned that if there was a home depot near I could pick up a new weather head and bring it back. This should of been my first warning, I was further told that if he had to order one and come back i would be charged an additional fee for the trip, this should of been my second warning to question what was going on. - Why in the world I did not call him out on this I have no idea. First, why is it on me to correctly identify a electrical component, buy it and bring it back to the electrician? As it turned out the one I did bring back was not the right size (big surprise right?); 2) Why, upon not being able to complete the work he was hired to complete, would I be on the hook for additional trip fees for him to come out and complete his work. I should of stopped this whole thing before it began but i didn't... While Joey was finishing up he sold me on the installation of a surge protection device, a device that gets wired into the circuit breaker box and protects from power spikes and such. I was told that the devices are usually a couple hundred dollars but since he was onsite he could install it, parts and labor, for $250. Fifteen minutes later he was done. I cut him a check and he presented me with survey to complete while he stood there, this should of been the third strike but instead ,not fully taking into account everything i wrote above, I filled it out while he looked on. Power back on, a little research showed that 'couple hundred dollar' whole house surge protector cost ~$60. When I contacted him by email about this I was told that the difference was his markup...All told, after $650 I still need to find a new service entrance cap and install it myself or hire someone else to install it, that is assuming I can find a cap that fits the existing weather head... ## Regarding J&G's response, this was not a communication issue with my wife and it?s absurd to suggest so. buyer beware.

We were initially hired to re-install service entrance cable and meter which was pulled away from home. We were communicating with the wife who ordered the work. Upon receiving the call we requested photos. In the photos that were submitted the cable assembly appeared to be fine. We advised the customer of our costs to re-secure the meter assembly as well as the service entrance cable for a cost of $400 labor only. We did mention to customer if any material would be required it would be at additional cost. She agreed to proceed and job was scheduled. Upon arrival the husband was at the house not the wife. Apparently this is a situation where the husband and wife had not communicated clearly. The husband was not clear about what the problem was and how we planned to address it. This scenario has happened in the past where one party orders the work and another party is there to supervise. We do have fully stocked service vehicles that under normal conditions we would have materials to correct most unknown situations that may arise. Unfortunately we did not have a weatherhead in our truck. I offered to Sean that I could come back and re-install his service weatherhead at our service call rate of $189.00 which would be discounted to $79.50 because it would be a 1 hour- 1 ½ hour job. In regards to Sean’s comments regarding the surge device, we advertise this unit on Angie’s List Storefront for $319.00; therefore he had a savings of $69.00. Furthermore, I performed a complimentary Panel Tune-up which is tightening all load wires in panel and vacuuming of panel enclosure free of charge, a further saving of $49.00. I also went over in detail with Sean how electrical surges occur and why grounding and bonding is important and went to exterior of his house and re-bonded his cable T.V splitter again at no charge. As you can see, J & G Electric is had no negative intent here as our reputation clearly shows. We believe this situation was a failure of communication on the part of the customer. We are happy to explain, clarify or address any and all concerns a customer may have. Additionally, the installation of the surge device includes a 1 year warranty on parts and labor. Sean could have informed us his concerns or simply declined to complete the survey and requested further clarification if needed. J&G came round for an estimate, saw that the job was not too big, so did the job right there and then. The technician was super friendly, very professional and helpful. Job was neat and clean. The technician initially gave me a price that I paid. A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door and the technician stated he discussed the job with the boss and reduced the price. They could have walked off with extra cash, but were honest enough to come back and get a check for a lower price. Honesty, a rare quality nowadays.

My wife was very impressed (and that's not easy!) with professionalism and thoroughness of the crew. When they discovered that there was no access from the attic to the fan without a ladder, they went to Home Depot, bought the lumber, and built a permanent ladder in the attic so that future service will be much easier. Of course they charged us for this extra work, but the price seemed quite reasonable to me, given what they had to do. Would most definitely use them again.

Young man came out and hung a couple of lights and tracked down an issue we were having with some outlets.. He was very courteous and knowledgable. Did the job quickly and efficiently. While I think everyone charges a bit to much.. They did the job they were paid to and showed up promptly. Would not hesitate to use them again..

Joey and the entire J&G family were excellent to work with. The customer service that was provided from the first phone call was superior to most contractors I have dealt with and they were fast and responsive. Joey and his team were able to provide and accurate estimate simply by photograph of the issue and then were able to meet that estimate when the arrived to do the actual work. In addition they taught us much about our own electrical system in our house and explained very thoroughly to us what they were doing and why. They also took care of dealing with the DC Government for us which is a job in itself. We will be calling Joey and the team for any future electrical work!

Joey was so friendly and professional, and it's not very often that a service provider actually lets you know that you can do something on your own without having to pay someone to do something relatively straightforward. What an honest, professional, kind way to do business. We will definitely use them when we have other electrical needs.
Description of Work: We called because we wanted to have carbon monoxide detectors installed in our new home. Joey spoke with me about it, asked some questions and explained that we could easily do it ourselves, walked me through the best kind for our needs, explained where we should install them in our home and what to in the event that carbon monoxide was detected. All without charging a penny.

He checked our new fuse box, the service entry cables, the outlets, and the AC wiring. There were a few outlets we were concerned about, but he confirmed that they were up to DC code. I was pleasantly surprised by the price. He did a little bit more than a regular electrical safety inspection (but not too much more), and he kindly charged us for the package as opposed to per hour. I would absolutely call them if I needed any electrical work done in the future. The electrician that came out was polite and unperturbed by my amateur questions.
Description of Work: We got an electrical inspection for a house we had just purchased. We had some concerns that our house had some weird wiring, and we wanted an electrician to check it out.
