Goshen Enterprises

Landscaping, Lawn and Yard Work, Pavers and Hardscaping,

About us

Goshen Enterprises was founded in 1985 by Kevin Bohrer originally as Beneficial Backyards. Even though Kevin was only 13 at the time, he has an entrepreneurial vision, Kevin would have never imagined that the company would grow from only 2 employees in 1985 to the staff that we currently have. Our staff works year-round to provide services for our clients. With offering full-time employment, our staff has developed into professionals, not just people working at a summer job. Throughout the years, the company has expanded from basic lawn maintenance to a full-service design, build, and maintenance firm. From a small planting or maintenance job, to a large landscape installation including ponds and patios, Goshen Enterprises, Inc. is capable of making your dreams come true. We employ our own stone masons who have been trained and with our knowledge of the construction techniques, we can guide the project so that it not only looks great when it is completed, but you can enjoy it for years to come.

Fron start to finsih it was a pleasure working with Goshen Enterprises. The customer reps who answer the phone are knowledgeable, friendly and courteous. The contract was easy to read, the work that needed to be done and which was agreed to was itemized and priced out. The workers who came to my home were always on time, accompshied was they were supposed to and cleaned up so the lawn/landscape looked lovely. No upfront money was required until the the work was completed..
Description of Work: My HOA called me on having turf weeds in my front lawn. Using Angie's List I had 3 companies look at the situation and give me bids. Of the 3, Goshen's was the most reasonable and the contract itemized all the other plantings/landscaping that I wanted in addition to taking care of the lawn. The rep from Goshen was on time, friendly and listened to my ideas and suggestions. The work was done and my lawn is now looking quite lush and green. In addition I am now having eroision probelms along my fence line and Goshen is working with me and the HOA to get this taken care of. I am a client for life and would absolutely recommend this company without any reservations.

They definitely look a lot better than when they left and it definitely looked better than when they arrived. They actually ended up not only ripping out all the area and making it look nice but they also weeded the entire front yard. They worked extra time so we appreciated that. Their prices were a little higher than some of their competitors and we had an issue. What they did was they sent out their people here to work on our yard and it was impossible to talk to their people because they did not speak much English so I had to call their office to please send the manager out so that was just a little inconvenient.
Description of Work: We had Goshen Enterprises Inc work for us in August of 2011. We had a hail here so they ripped out dying Junipers and they replaced them with plants and boulders and they just made them look all nice. They created a bed and mulched it.

The yard did not appear to have been iver seeded, as no new grass ever germinated. The low areas did germinate and looked good until mid summer when the grass began to die off.
Description of Work: Goshen was contracted to fill in two low areas in the yard with top soil and over seed. They were also contracted to over seed the complete yard.

I contacted Goshen and another local lawn service. The other company said they would come out, but never did. Tommy Cressman of Goshen visited us on the day of our choice and walked around the yard with us, pointing out good and bad areas. He sat in his car and drew up our service plan immediately. It had a list of services from which to choose. Choices are always good! We did not have to sign up that day. He followed up by email, my preferred form of communication. We picked the services we wanted and the first one was done a few days later.
Description of Work: They only applied winterizing fertilizer at this visit. They will visit at least 6 more times next year.

We were initially drawn to Kevin's company because of the exquisitve photos of projects he had done on his website. They were all much more artistic and creative than any other sites. Kevin personally came to our home for a session where he looked over everything we wanted to do and came up with some initial ideas that really appealed to us. He listened to our needs and desires...and factored in the deer in the area that were eating our plants and trees....He had terrific ideas that we would have never thought of......he had SO MUCH knowledge about every aspect of each project....plus we learned that we could get everything done with his one company!! One stop shopping! And, he would be the only one we'd have to contact...he'd use people that he knew and trusted. The second time he came, he had a complete proposal with price and drawings of what he thought would work....We added our opinions and he tweaked a few things, but basically we LOVED his proposal and signed with him immediately. After reading his Angie's list reviews, checking his website, and sizing up how very knowledgeable he was and how easy he was to talk to....we felt no need to pursue another bid. We knew we were in good hands AND WE WERE. It all turned out better than we even dreamed and he was in touch with email all along the way...when we had a question or concern, he'd email back and we'd figure it out together....communication with a contractor is SO IMPORTANT to us....he was so easy to work with. We will continue to work with him over the years. We look forward to a long and happy relationship with his company. This is one of the best experiences we ever had with a contractor.
Description of Work: Pull out all existing bushes, flowers, and slate walkway ...Design a new garden, including new front walkway (flagstone)... Pick the design and each individual bush, tree, or flowers....plus design the shape, look, color, and material for new front walkway. Also, took out bushes around cable box by sidewalk that had been eaten by deer....replanted with lovely grasses that deer won't eat and are much more attractive clean and repaired gutters Created an area just off side of garage for trash cans (to get them OUT of the garage...too smelly)....he used the existing slate from the old walkway! Mulch trees in tront of house and at mailbox...and new garden area Take out an old dead tree Trimmed old, tall trees in back of house Regraded the lawn in the backyard that was uneven and where water was pooling...and reseeded for new grass Added riverstones at end of driveway near sidewalk...and repaired and re-sealed the driveway

Goshen was punctual and professional. The poison ivy actually came back after they removed it, so they came out again and sprayed round-up on it. I appreciated the follow-up. The service was as described, but pricey - $1750 for 3 workers for 7 hours + $75 dollars worth of mulch = more per hour than a GS 15 step 10!
Description of Work: Removal of grass for small planting beds in front and back of the house, removal of poison ivy, removal of two small trees, mulching new planting beds, yard clean up and pruning of bushes.

We worked with Andy French. Andy was very quick to respond, came out to give a quote when he said he would, and worked quickly. He was very open to our ideas and discussed what would be most cost effective in the long run - even cautioning against some work that he thought wouldn't be a good investment for the property (repairing a retaining wall vs. replacing it). The quote came back at a lower cost than competitors. We agreed to do the work and Andy's team came out 4 days later. They completed all of the work within 2 days and it looked fantastic. They were quiet and professional and very respectful of the neighbors. They actually did more work than I expected - they didn't just weed and mulch the areas we asked for - they also weeded the yard along our fence and the front areas. The end result looked far better than we had even hoped. Two days later, the big storm hit MD and took out a tree in our front yard. We called Andy back and two days later, his team arrived to quickly and efficiently remove the broken tree and all of its bits (and there were a lot of bits). I am very happy with the work that Goshen has done on our yard and I would gladly use them again. In fact, we asked them to come back and do every other month weeding and pruning in the yard, for a really reasonable cost. We look forward to a long and useful relationship.
Description of Work: Weeded and mulched flower beds near house. Weeded and mulched large overgrown vegetable garden in back. Weeded and mulched large area behind house and relocated several plants that were not thriving in current location. Removed a half-dead tree from the back of the property. Removed a second tree that had been damaged by a storm.

The job was never started. The contractor never sibmitted an proposal, just a phone message for me to contact him.
Description of Work: My experience was with a pereson named Dave, who talked entirely too loudly and seemed over his head. He kept the first appointment and said he would inform me of a preliminary estimate later. He never did. He made a second appointment, which he kept, but had no estimates to offer and still needed to take measurements. He did make a "guess" at a cost of 27K. The third appointment, a week later, he didn't keep at all, nor did he call to say he would be unable to keep it. However, later in the afternoon, he called and left a message for me to contact him. The project was to remove an old stone retaining wall, get rid of 17 tree stumps and roots and build a new patio, following the "footprint" of an old one. There is terracing and steps involved. I know that it is no small job. His original "guess" was 27K which was not shocking because there is a lot of demo and removal to be done, besides. However, for a job worth 27K, I don't expect to have to play telephone tag with the contractor.

Response from Goshen Enterprises
(member name removed), Thank you for your feedback. I’m truly sorry that your experience with our representative was far from productive and that the estimate you requested was not submitted in the timely fashion you expected. We do appreciate hearing from customers, whether they did business with us in the past or are current customers, as this helps us understand better ways to serve them, especially when they were not satisfied. Our representative worked hard to understand your needs and to meet your expectations. Unfortunately, after he presented the proposal to you, this was not accomplished. As far as the appointment issues you had, we do ask our project managers to allow office personnel to schedule appointments to avoid such incidents. Again, thank you for the feedback, we appreciate very much.

Goshen's estimate was not the lowest or the highest, but they were the most professional, by far! The quote was provided by the estimator on the first visit! The other guys made us wait a week or more.
Description of Work: We had our original landscaping removed and Goshen worked up a design that we loved. They also fixed a nagging drainage problem.

I usually do the fall cleanup myself but the landscaping was just so overgrown I needed help this year. The owner, Kevin, walked around with me and gave me the estimate within 15 minutes of the walk-through. It was a little expensive but WORTH EVERY SINGLE PENNY!!!! It was truly unbelievable what they did! They cleaned up and everything was exactly the way I wanted it. It was perfect. No complaints at all!!!! They will be my one and only landscaping co from now on. They even referred painters and remodelers to me!

The work was done promptly and thoroughly.
Description of Work: Goshen did yard clean up, mulching, and shrub trimming at my townhouse. The yard was severely overgrown and included a large pyracantha which is hard to keep trimmed due to the large thorns. They also repaired a flower bed stonework that my husband installed many years ago preserving it's look and function. They did a great job. Also, later in May, my yard in Gaithersburg had not been mowed for many weeks due to the hospitalization and passing of my mother. I called Goshen and even though they don't usually do one-time mowing, they came the next day and mowed my yard. It looked great! Kevin Bohrer is very professional and personable.

After receiving estimates from 4 highly rated Angie's List firms, we selected Goshen and were very pleased with both Kevin Bohrer and the workers who performed all the labor. We had the Goshen Landscapers come help us take back control of our overgrown backyard, and were very happy with their work. We had a general cleanup in front, including weeding our azaleas, laying down fabric and stone (river rocks) behind the azaleas to minimize the regrowth of weeds, as well as trimming trees and installing 6 steppers on the side of our house and about 15 in the rear of the house. They also graded our back yard, pulled out all the weeds and mulched our garden plot, installed boulders at the edge of the plot and reseeded the graded area. It took about 4 days to do all this work, then they came back on the 15th to weed out our bamboo and install a barrier to prevent the bamboo from encroaching upon our yard. We had some ornamental plants put in to the former garden plot at this time. the workers were polite and efficient, and cleaned up after themselves. They even fixed my garden hose connection to the spigot, which I had been unable to tighten myself. The only complaint I have with Goshen is that we received the information sheet about how to treat our newly seeded back yard only several days after the work had been done. Apparently we were supposed to have watered the new seed/straw lawn, which would have been nice to know immediately after the work was done! However, the info sheet wasn't given to us until the invoice was sent, about 2 weeks later (luckily it ad rained and I had done some watering when it got dry, so that the new grass grew just fine). Other than this little snafu, everything else was fine. We would definitely hire Goshen again for any landscaping, yard or tree work.
Description of Work: Yard Cleanup in Front, installation of stones, and steppers in front and side and rear of house. Grading, seeding and digging, installation of about 10 boulders in backyard to line garden plot. Tree trimming. Weeding. Mulching of garden plot, planting of ornamentals and moving of irises. Major bamboo cleanup (removing vines, volunteer trees, etc.), installation of bamboo barrier.

I met with the account manager--whom I believe was the owner--on a Saturday (the schedule person was cordial about accommodating my day job) and we walked around the lot and discussed the plants. He was quite knowledgeable about perennials--a rarity, I find, much to my surprise--and could identify many of them just from the spring shoots coming up out of the dirt. It was a very good conversation, and the gentleman assured me that their workers were not summer help but people who did a great deal of landscaping and would know their gardening. It took a little while to get them out--slightly over three weeks, I believe, given weather and spring schedules--but I couldn't complain, as I was a late in the season when calling them. Their crew did all the work in one day, cleaned up beautifully afterward, and left an advertising sign stuck in the grass at the curb--which was OK, since they did splendid work. They DID know the difference between the Mexican Primroses that self-seed and weeds in the garden! They paid a careful attention to what they were pruning and erred on the conservative side, if anything (left one weed that looks exactly like a clematis in its leaf, and had told me they would). Kevin said that he'd be back in a month or so to check on things, and he did email me just yesterday, having noticed that the yew bushes were getting wooly and wild--which they do about twice a year at least. So I am definitely going to have them back to deal with them, hopefully to repair the amateur hack-job (done by a different contractor) and snow damage left the year before. As for price? It would seem that in this instance, I got what I paid for, which was *far* more than I could have done myself at all, since our yard is almost a half-acre, and it gave my spring garden a great start. I have used less expensive landscapers who did a terrible job. Given the man-hours put in, and the intelligence and kindness with which they treated my yard and me, I would give them high marks. Worth every penny, and I'm fussy about my plants.
Description of Work: Asked for a spring yard cleanup: removing dead/blown leaves and branches from ground, mulching and manuring beds, trimming back dead parts of perennials, removing ivy from a tree trunk, pruning forsythia and ornamental grass, trimming a broken limb off a tree, and weeding perennial beds. There was a lot; I might have left something out!

Kevin came by the house on a weekend to give us a free estimate. He clearly has a great design eye as he suggested some affordable and beautiful landscaping suggestions. He also provided us pictures and details about each plant he suggested planting so that we knew exactly what we were getting into. We ended up intalling a number of plants, removed a tree, reshaped our landscaping, and seeded. I would highly recommend Goshen.

Overall, it went well. They gave a very detailed estimate which we thought was fair. They had Miss Utility come out to indicate utility lines. About a week later, they started the job, which took about 1.5 days. They dug into our property to install a drainage line. Unbeknownst to us, they dug on our neighbor's property, which he was very upset about, and they cut his cable. The manager came out very quickly and resolved the issue, and had the utility fix the line at their expense, so I would say lesson learned. They seeded the area and lay straw. They cleaned up our shrubbery beds, removed several dead azaleas, and planted replacements (much prettier color, which they chose). They lay stone where the drainage exited, which looks very pretty as well as functional. Very shortly, the new shade-tolerant grass came in, and now a month later it's a gorgeous, lush lawn. All in all, we are very happy with the services performed.
Description of Work: We have had a problem with drainage on the side of our house and subsequently, unable to grow grass. Goshen Enterprises installed a drain, completely seeded the area, and mulched our beds. In addition, they planted azaleas we requested. The job was done completely to our satisfaction, and we now have beautiful shade-tolerant grass where we've never had before. One issue, however, make sure they've researched where the property lines exist. Miss Utility did come out and indicate where lines lay, but Goshen somehow managed to cut our neighbor's cable. They also dug on our neighbor's property. All was resolved very quickly, but I would make sure there is a manager on the job and that they're aware of these things. Overall, though, we were very ahppy with the work, and would definitely use them again. They did a nice job.

Great response time to initial inquiry. Great time return on quote, over e-mail. Service scheduled around our schedules, performed on time and very professionally. Billed us after the work was done to make sure we were satisfied with the job.
Description of Work: Goshen came out to estimate and perform a landscape overhaul of our front yard. The quote was in the middle, but the increased cost was worth the responsive service and professionalism. His crew did a spectacular job, and even cleaned out the window wells while they were working. The little details made all the difference. We will definitely be using Goshen again.

Kevin the owner came on a Tuesday, looked over my yard and said he would be right back with the numbers of the estimate. I was in the middle of something in the house and noticed a good 15 minutes had gone by. I will say at first that I was just starting to get agitated at why it was taking so long to get the numbers together. Well much to my surprise and delight, when Kevin came back to my house he was gone for so long because he produced a typed up estimate on company letterhead (Must have a portable printer in the car, lol) with three examples of the work they could do, giving me options on work and price. I was blown away by the "mobile professionalism". We scheduled the work for the following week, though rainy days pushed that date back about an extra week. Finally the weather broke, the crew showed up at 0745 am and were done 0500 pm. No complaints, workers did what was asked. One even took it upon himself to weed a 25' x 8' section of the back yard. And in record time, I might add. Crew used the hose to clean up as best they could, and two and 1/2 weeks later, it looks great. May use them for further work in the future!
Description of Work: Goshen Enterprises did a great job re-sodding my front lawn and doing some repair work on the back lawn (About 2500 sq ft). Kevin is very professional and the owner I believe. When he came for the estimate I was oridinally asking to have the whole yard re-sodded and he actually talked me into a more managable and cheaper solution, including seeding parts in the back yard after grading them. A less reputable company could have just came and said sure we'll do the whole thing, knowing they could just get extra money. Workers were on site for about 9 hours, knocked it out, cleaned up and the lawn looks great just some three weeks later. I would definitely recommend them.

Arrived for estimate on time. Very professional. Very helpful with suggestions. Very knowledgable with best types of deer resistant plants. Constructed estimate on property before leaving. Was able to begin work earlier than anticipated. Finished in 2 days. All debri perfectly cleaned away. Job looks great. Much attention to detail. Cut up a downed tree in side yard to use parts for a fire pit. Cleaned up all of the tree and surrounding area. Wanted me to look over completed job and give him any questions or complaints before sending the bill. There were no complaints, only praise. Cost was well worth the excellent work. Enthusiastically recommend.

I am fussy, and want the weeds removed, not just ripped off and covered over with mulch. They not only weeded properly, they also knew which plants were not weeds. I have had previous companies who have ripped out perennials and left weeds behind. Goshen knew the difference. The only complaint I have was that they put a sign on my lawn without asking me first and I am not one to put out signs.
Description of Work: Fall clean up. They also helped me earlier in the summer when my weeds grew out of control.

The prices were fair, the work was done as promised, and Kevin advised on our rights with Pepco for tree service--he even went the extra mile in making contact with the county and Pepco on our behalf. This was an excellent experience and we will definitely use Goshen again!
Description of Work: Kevin provided an estimate for tree work following a major storm this summer, He was great to work with, an excellent communicator, and very customer service oriented. In addition, we had our yard aerated and overseeded, as well as a small asphalt repair on our concrete walkway, all which went very well.

Goshen Enterprises did an excellent job. They were punctual and very courteous, and are very knowledgeable about plants and bushes. They returned 6 weeks later to weed out the thistles that came back.
Description of Work: .They weeded a small garden surrounding a historic building, laid red gravel on one side and wood mulch on the other, planted 5 dwarf boxwoods, laid round rocks at the gutter downspouts, and installed a sign. They also moved two historic rocks to the site from County property with the County's permission and were very careful not to chip or scratch them.
