Cemmy came out to our house for the initial estimate. He arrived on time and discussed with us what we had in mind, which including knocking down a wall to combine the current kitchen and dining room into one larger kitchen. He emailed us the design idea and estimate a few days later. At this time we were still getting estimates from several other contractors and trying to feel our way through the entire process, but during that time Cemmy was not pushy at all. He did not repeatedly call us, pressuring us to make a decision like some of the other contractors did. He was so incredibly patient over this time period; promptly responding to every single email and question.
In addition to the million emails, we went to the showroom a few times and everyone there was so helpful too. Cemmy and Oscar helped us adjust the design and estimate to fit within our budget and helped us pick out all the materials. In addition, Javier was very knowledgeable and helpful in responding to some of our structural concerns (it?s an old house). Ultimately, it was this patience, willingness and responsiveness that helped us decide that DMV was the best choice and three months after our initial meeting we signed a contract with DMV.
Best decision ever. These guys are amazing. Being novices to the entire remodeling experience, we were very nervous about all the things that could go wrong and the horror stories we had heard from other people. Obviously, those people had not chosen to work with DMV because we had a fantastic experience. At the signing of the contract, we had set the date for when the work would start and when it would be completed. Sure enough, on the first day they were there at 8am ready to go. The crew worked 8am to 6pm, Monday through Saturday. Everyone was incredibly polite and they did a fantastic job of cleaning up at the end of every day.
The work we needed done was extensive and included gutting the entire kitchen; ripping up the floor and putting down a new subfloor for the new tile floor; moving HVAC vents; installing recessed lights and under-cabinet lights; installing all new cabinets and countertops; installing a tile backsplash; installing our new appliances and getting rid of the ones that we could not donate; and widening the entry way into the kitchen. They worked quickly and took great pride in the quality of their work. Every aspect was done with the utmost care. And on top of that, they even did some additional work for us that had nothing to do with the kitchen. Our bathroom exhaust vent had never worked well and the moisture was causing mold and mildew in our bathroom. We mentioned that to DMV and they said they would fix it without a problem. They put in an exahust vent in the attic and we have not had a problem with moisture since. Their flexibility and willingness to help us, at no cost to us, was so greatly appreciated.
Cemmy was in constant contact with us throughout the entire process. There were a couple bumps in the road, as to be expected with any large project. We would text Cemmy with our concerns and he would immediately respond and the issue would be addressed by the next day. They addressed every single concern we had and made sure that we were 100% satisfied with every aspect. They finished on time and everything looks fantastic! We are so happy with the kitchen and the entire experience. It will certainly save us a great deal of time when we can get around to remodeling our bathroom because we already know who to call.
I found DMV through Angie's list, gave them a call, and arranged for them to come out to discuss my project. Cemmy arrived on time and we proceeded to go over all aspects of the project. Although clearly someone who is more on the sales side of things he took plentiful notes as well as measurements. He sent a first draft quote in about a week (right in line with what he said he'd do). I indicated that I was interested in moving forward so we scheduled a follow up visit where Cemmy brought Javier over as well to do a more thorough quote. Javier was extremely knowledgable in all aspects of renovation/construction and was able to quickly identify which areas would be tricky and how best to address them. As I had expected the revised quote was higher than the original due to Javier?s better understanding of exactly how much work would be involved and our mutual agreement that pulling all permits for this type of project would be the best option. We then met at their office to sign a contract and pick out various materials. Although the contract covered the big picture work there were still a number of smaller details to be worked out to which we agreed to both be reasonable about. Javier and Cemmy assured me that their main job was our satisfaction and we?d work out any details as they came up.
Work started on time and we were introduced to Maynor who would be doing the bulk of day to day work. For the next 6 or so weeks we saw Maynor and friends from 8am to 6pm Monday through Saturday. Communication with Cemmy continued on picking out items and finalizing details, Javier stopped by a few times a week as needed to oversee work. Maynor did a great job doing the work with various specialists dropping by when needed for electricity and major plumbing.
In my mind the one thing that separates a good contractor from a great one is how things are handled when issues and changes arise (and issues and changes will always arise). Here are few examples of things that came up along the way and how they were handled:
- In picking out fixtures and such after the fact I chose a number of things that I knew clearly where more expensive than DNV could have reasonably had allowances for in their quote. In a some of those cases I even explicitly mentioned that if they needed me to cover the difference to let them know, but in each case they covered it entirely.
- During removal of debris they accidentally broke the globe hanging over our stairwell. They contacted me immediately apologizing and asking for exact model number so they could replace it. They purchased replacement and handled installation.
- One night a pipe that they had been working on earlier in the day sprung a small leak and was dripping on to the floor below. Javier had given me his cell number in case of any issues so I gave him a call. He answered his phone on the first call and asked if we needed to have someone sent out immediately (was about 8pm on a Saturday night at that point), I told him I had contained the leak and it could wait until morning. He had a team to fix the leak there 8am the next morning (Sunday). They also addressed the minor damage caused by the leak.
- When working on the design of our closet to laundry room conversion Javier pointed out that the design as it stood would leave a good bit of space to the sides of the laundry machines hard to access. He suggested moving the double closet doors and installing a new third door next to them. I agreed it made much more sense. Javier went ahead and did it the way he suggested which included a good bit of work to move the door and purchasing a new door all at no additional cost.
- In designing our bathroom vanity layout I failed to consider how the mirrors aligned with the cabinets and sinks below. Nothing had been installed yet but everything had been purchased. Cemmy agreed to change the cabinets for models that would allow everything to be better aligned at no additional cost.
- During rough-in inspection the inspector wanted an engineering report done on some of the I-beams to verify the support added to them was sufficient. DMV covered the full cost of the engineering report.
- When hanging the vanity mirrors it was clear that the dark color on the mirror frames I?d picked out was no where near the color of the wood on the cabinets (last time I ever pick a wood color from an online photo). Cemmy went ahead and returned the mirrors and after doing a considerable amount of research to find something that would fit into the space and match the color without any luck offered to build custom mirrors in exactly the size needed for our configuration. Looked perfect and again done at no additional cost.
- The method of laying the small square tiles in our shower floor clearly showed that one of our walls wasn?t straight. In walking through with Javier I jokingly asked if he could do something about my house being crooked. He obviously couldn?t but he wasn?t satisfied with the manner in which the tile was laid, he said it could be done better to minimize the visual appearance of the crooked wall. He then had the team tear up the entire shower floor and redo it from scratch. It added a few days to the project but resulted in a much better looking finish, again at no additional cost.
The two things to take away from all the experiences is DMV repeatedly did whatever needed to be done to make sure we were happy and they did it all at no additional cost. We did not have to spend a single penny over our original contracted price even though there were numerous changes done along the way.
Overall the way DMV does business with Javier overseeing the job and doing high level design; Cemmy handling contracting, logistics, and ordering; Maynor handling day-to-day execution from demolition through finishing touches; and occasional specialists where needed is pretty much a perfect mix for home renovation work. It provides both consistency and oversight. And the fact that they do it at a reasonable price and then don?t nickel and dime you after the fact just makes it all the better.
In the end the real question is if you?d hire someone again and for DMV I just did. Javier, Cemmy, and Maynor just started a new project on my house this week and I?m already thinking up projects for them to work on when this one is done.
DMV performed the work in a thorough and conscientious manner. The bathroom is exactly what I wanted: the marble tile is lovely and the installation of all fixtures was done promptly and correctly.
The apartment looks so much fresher and more modern with the popcorn ceiling removed and repainted, as does the whole apartment with a new coat of paint.
A special thanks for the professional services of: Cemmy, Javier, Maynor, Grover, Orlando,Eduardo and Primo.
They worked with us through all the details. They were very accommodating when we said we wanted to do some things (painting and selecting and purchasing our own sink/vanity independently of the contract). They agreed to install what we purchased and provided suppliers and suggestions for us to use when our original vanity supplier back-ordered our purchase..
They showed up on time and worked very long hours six days a week. Their supervisor communicated with us on almost a daily basis. Any phone calls we made were answered almost immediately. The workmen were pleasant and efficient and did everything they could to minimize the dust and disruption. Completely gutting a room is a messy and dirty job and they did everything they could to minimize the mess. They removed all the debris from our garage on a regular basis.
The men requested our input on each phase--where the towel bars should be; were we pleased with the lighting etc.; When the glass shower door was delayed because of a miscalculation and the Christmas holiday, they were very apologetic and stayed on top of the issue getting it to us before the original date.
As you can see from the above, we are very please with all that was done. We would recommend them to others.
I had to fix my house due to water and tenant damage, and then decided to just fix it and sell it. When my realtor saw it she said, "STUNNING" "better than she'd expected" and "we may be able to go up" in listing price because the work was so well done.
DMV were a pleasure to work with (Rolando), picking out items and even substituting items/finishes was quick and easy (they have a showroom that you can identify tiles, etc.). Apparently, they do not use subs, but for my job they used two different teams -- one to do the structural stuff under the floor; the other to do the kitchen/bath remodel. Both teams were great, communicative, responsive, etc. You get the sense that Javier (part owner) has a lot of integrity.
We hit a delay due to permits when we opened up the floor and realized more work needed to be done than initially predicted, but I understand that that's life and can't blame a contractor for an unknown/inconvenience. I've already had someone call for a reference wondering if DMV is equipped to do structural stuff AND cosmetic stuff, and I would definitely say YES. I have been a homeowner for 10years, I've dealt with my share of contractors, and I picked DMV out of 6 competitors - a couple of whom quoted astronomical prices that raised eyebrows. DMV met high standards, exceeded expectations, and were respectful of my finances at every step of the way, including when we needed to do a change order.
So, thank you Rolando, Javier - appreciate the chance to work with you and will look forward to calling you FIRST in the future.
My first stop was at DMV. Oscar Perdomo immediately made time for me, even though I had no appointment. I asked many questions, and he was able to offer several options to address the work that needed to be done. I asked him to also review an estimate from one of his competitors, and in a kind way, showed me the flaws in the estimate, and where those areas were addressed in his own. Bottom line, for the work that was needed, I was getting "more bang for the buck" from DMV. I cancelled my next 2 appointments.
A start date was made, and everything was smooth sailing from the beginning. His crew was polite, incredibly neat, and very conscientious of making the changes exactly as I wanted. It was amazing the amount of work they could do in one day. ALL walls, crevices, doors, etc were totally covered in plastic to reduce dust. At the end of each day, you hardly knew they had been there.
Oscar checked in regularly, and of course there were a few things that needed to be changed/adjusted during the course of the job. Each time, I could tell that ALL he was interested in was my satisfaction with the finished product. A shower unit needed an upgrade.....no problem. A mirror wasn't quite the style I wanted. He had his men remove it and replace it the next day. The tile work was amazing. The guys that did the granite countertops were real pros, also. Two countertops cut and installed in probably 2 hours.
Now, three months post job, Oscar is still checking in to make sure everything is still to my satisfaction. I would highly recommend this company, and will hopefully have them remodeling my kitchen in the spring.
We had a wonderful experience from start to finish with DMV Kitchen & Bath and are tremendously impressed with the results! Due to poor construction by the original builder (no liner installed in the shower), our master bathroom shower began leaking into the closet below. This caused significant damage to the bathroom and a mold problem. After talking with several different contractors, we chose DMV. We met with Rolando to discuss what we wanted - he was very helpful and patient as we selected the tile and countertops we wanted. Throughout the process, he was the most responsive contractor we've worked with *ever* - he always quickly responded to text, calls, or emails and provided a backup when he was out of town. The workers did an outstanding job - entire process was about 3 weeks - and took care with covering everything in plastic, making sure our cat didn't escape, etc. The new bathroom looks 100x better, and no more leaks! We're extremely satisfied with the result, and would recommend DMV to anyone!
For our last project, we worked with Javier as our point man. He was terrific. This time around Oscar was assigned to us. In addition to his design and construction knowledge, he had an unlimited amount of patience! It was slow going for us to make decisions, and Oscar was accommodating to the max. Even when we weren't expecting him, he seemed to suddenly appear in our house to check up on the day's progress.
Three teams worked on the demolition, installation, electric, plumbing and painting work. All of the men were professional, courteous, hard working and excelled at their jobs. Everyone involved in our project always went the extra mile to insure that the work passed our stringent standards.
This job involved installing new cabinets, countertops, sink, faucet, tile backsplash, under cabinet lighting, recessed lighting, running a gas line to the range, painting, and installing new appliances: range, microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator. The kitchen is not large, but with the new remodel we have more floor and cabinet space.
Our kitchen remodel exceeded our expectations. We were very fortunate to have DMV on board. We rate them an A+!
That is how we felt when we visited our farmhouse to discover a pipe
had broken, causing devastating water and mold damage. Black mold seemed to be
everywhere on the interior of the ground floor. What was worse, we discovered
there was a $10,000.00 cap on mold-related damage on our policy. We were
advised to level it and "write it off" by family and friends who saw
it.
Miracle Workers!
Enter DMV Kitchens and Bath. We had used them in the past for bathroom
remodeling and basement finishing. Javier took a look and said he would
represent us in working with the insurance company, and he did.
Much of what the insurance company said was mold damage, Javier was
able to successfully show was actually water damage which was covered by our
policy.
In order to get the mold out, the house was taken down to a shell - not
even the floors were left.
I will let the pictures speak for the miracle work that DMV accomplished
on time and within budget.
No job is too big for this company. They are the best!
It is so rare to find such a customer service-oriented company that is
top quality without breaking the bank.
On a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best DMV Kitchens and Baths is a
TEN.
DMV was friendly and easy to work with. We appreciated their willingness to work with us on the budget - we went through the estimate line-by-line and elected to perform some tasks ourselves (demolition, painting, and backsplash) which helped reduce our overall cost.
During the design phase, we worked with a designer named Cemmy who was always very responsive to what we wanted to do. He came to our house to evaluate our initial plan and gave some great suggestions for improving it. We then had an appointment at their office in Gaithersburg to select materials and Cemmy was again very helpful - he knows the right balance between giving suggestions but also letting the client guide the look of the new kitchen. We also appreciated that he was not constantly trying to "up-sell" us with more expensive cabinets, counters, appliances, etc.
Once the project started, Cemmy was still our contact person but we also were provided the personal phone number of the project manager Javier. Javier was great to work with - he fixed a few errors we made during the demolition phase at minimal cost and helped us address some emergent issues (mostly electrical) which were discovered once the old kitchen was removed.
All of the workers that DMV sent to our house were courteous and helped to minimize the disruption to our family (e.g. they didn't treat the whole house like a construction zone). They also took the time to discuss each day's planned work with us and get any feedback or make changes to the design as necessary - particularly their electrician Tomas who was great to work with.
As worked progressed Cemmy and Javier addressed any issues we raised quickly and professionally. A few of the cabinets arrived with minor damage or broken pieces - these we all corrected without our involvement. When we discovered a problem between the dishwasher and lower handle on the stove drawer, Cemmy worked with the manufacturer to get a new drawer.
In the end, we liked working with DMV so much that we also hired them to do some work on our master bathroom. Highly recommended.
Got measurements from Evan who arrived at our house on time and was very professional, knowledgeable and friendly.
I went to the showroom to look at the sink and granite options. Evan was out, so another guy helped me who seemed new. He was very nice and tried to be helpful but was unable to answer the majority of questions like the grades and prices of the granite I liked. Evan later told me he was a manager... odd. I'm not sure why didn't he know the grades and prices? When I got the estimate of $5800 for the lowest grade granite (this was higher than other estimates), I emailed him back and asked if there was any way to cut down the price. Initially I thought there was no answer but apparently there was an email in my spam box. They were able to reduce the price $450 but it was still more than I expected. I went with Artistic Granite.
GREAT JOB. IN FUTURE ALSO IF I NEED TO DO ANY WORK I WILL CALL THE SAME COMPANY. VERY PROFESSIONAL
Here are a few reasons why I highly recommend DMV Kitchen and Bath and why I will use them again:
1. The team arrived at my home on time, and were very respectful of the property. They worked 10-12 hours a day to stay within their timeline.
2. They were very conscientious: they carefully taped off the floor and placed plastic in the entryways to help prevent dust. They cleaned up/swept at the end of each day and placed their supplies neatly away in the garage. That says a lot about a company.
3. They asked questions if they weren't sure...they wanted to do it right!
4. They do GREAT WORK! I was truly surprised at the end of each day, at what they accomplished. My kitchen was transformed in 8 days!
It's clear that Evan, Javier and the entire DMV K&B team are committed to providing a great experience for their customers, doing whatever it takes to create the desired outcome. They are truly a delight to work with. I am more than pleased with my new kitchen...it's exactly as I had envisioned it, and then some. I cannot wait to have my bathrooms upgraded...I will only make one call!
THANK YOU, DMV K&B...well done!
Javier was our overall project manager and I can't speak highly enough about his commitment to customer satisfaction. There were the expected 'surprises' and communication challenges along the way, but it was always clear that Javier was 100% committed to our satisfaction. (As we have learned in taking on a project like this, the more specific you can be about your plans and expectations, the better off both the client and the contractor will be.) They stayed true to our contracted price and didn't nickel and dime us on minor (and some not so minor) changes along the way. There was one or two items that came up that did impact our overall cost, but they were very careful to lay out our options and make sure we understood the various tradeoffs before they did any actual work. A few parts of our project were initially executed in a way that wasn't what we were expecting or that we weren't happy with, but in every instance they worked with us to make sure we were satisfied. Our biggest challenge came in the final stretch when there was an issue around replacement of a damaged appliance, however as with everything else, in the end they made sure that we ended up satisfied.
The work crews were great. We asked that they not arrive before 8 am each day when our son goes to school, and they arrived pretty much as 8 am on the dot each day and made sure we were ready for them before entering the house. They took care to manage the mess, covering the floors, taping off other parts of the house to minimize the dust, and cleaned up at the end of the day. And the quality of their work was exceptional.
Overall, our project was pretty complex - we removed a wall and a coat closet that also impacted our living room, found 'unexpected' pipes in the walls that needed to be moved, and broke through an external brick wall to enlarge a window - in addition to the usual tiling, cabinet and appliance installation that is part of many kitchen remodels. We also chose relatively high-end materials, which is reflected in our overall costs, and also meant that we were very demanding about the final result. I would definitely hire them again, and would highly recommend them to others.
For those of you reading this review....pick up your phone and call DMV today, you will not regret it!
