When we informed Stephanie that we would like to proceed with the project, she and Javier, the project manager, came to our house, and we all walked through every detail together. I raised some concerns that I thought might impact the project (such as HVAC duct-work that I suspected was inconveniently placed), and Javier investigated and gave us some ideas of how the issues could be mitigated. My wife and I were satisfied, and we signed the contract.
The following week we met Stephanie at DMV's showroom, and she helped us pick out all the fixtures, tile, etc that would be installed. We weren't sure what we wanted in terms of themes and styles, but she helped us with each part. She also called over a second designer for another opinion in a few cases.
DMV started working about 4 weeks after we selected everything, to ensure that everything had been delivered prior to starting work. The workers were there promptly at the agreed start time (8 am) every day for 6 days a week, until the project was completed. During that period there were always at least 2 guys working, and as many as 6. At the end of the day, they cleaned up and blocked off access to the rooms until the floors and walls were installed, so that my kids wouldn't hurt themselves. They were extremely courteous, and always went out of their way to make us comfortable. Something that impressed me was Javier was onsite nearly every day, especially early in the construction, to make sure everything was going as planned. He always explained to me what was going on and asked if I had any questions. Any changes in plan (for instance, the location of a wall had to be moved slightly due to the way the plumbing lined up) he ran by me first to make sure I approved of everything, and it seemed like all of his ideas were just right.
The job was done on time, and they did an excellent job. We have no complaints what-so-ever about the finished product, and the process was amazingly smooth. We had been putting off this project for years, because of the expense, but also because of what we feared would be an enormous hassle and inconvenience-- but there really wasn't any of either. Every time someone said they would be here, they were always here, right on time. No one was ever late, or showed up unexpectedly during the entire process. Now that it's done, our bathrooms are even better than what we'd hoped for. The kitchen lighting and other drywall work were a really nice addition as well. Also, the cost was as good as or better than any other estimate that we received.
quality of work, (2) whether the project is finished on time, and (3) whether there is no hidden charge. Satisfaction
of above 3 Ws is only worth 3 stars to my point of view because that is your expectation from any contractors and should always be met. DMV certainly received my approval on 3Ws this time. What really differentiates a good contractor from an average contractor is the experience of the whole process. Our kitchen renovation started from reading reviews on Aggies' list and interviewing designers. We finally decided to have Oscar and DMV to do our kitchen project. Oscar is a soft spoken person but very responsive. He responded our calls and text messages. He also provided helpful suggestions to our project. Most importantly, whatever he agreed upfront, he made his words. To my observation, DMV is a very organized family based company. They arrived on time and left with cleanness. I gave them the 4th star for their professionalism. DMV has a one-year
labor warranty policy. I waited for 4 months to write this review and to see what would happen after the project was done. It is usually the case that the customers lose the power of control after the contractor has received all the money. Several days ago, I text message to Oscar regarding a little issue and small modifications regarding the range hood duct. He called me back and came to my house to take an onsite measurement. Surprisingly, he also brought touchups to us which we mentioned before but unfortunately forgot. We feel DMV is a reliable source for home projects and will consider them for our other future projects. For its reliability, I give Oscar and DMV the 5th star. Results (3 stars) + Experience (1 star) + Reliability (1 star) = 5 stars.
They arrived each day in a timely manner and worked practically nonstop (took what seemed to me a very brief lunch break). Most evenings they left around 5:15p.m. but stayed later if the job required it. They were polite and as nonintrusive as it is possible to be under such circumstances. They did work one Saturday in order to get the job finished in a more timely manner.
They cleaned up all debris and removed it from the area in a timely manner.
There price was very competitive.
I was always able to get in touch with someone which at the office ( a live voice and not an answering machine) which I greatly appreciated. Rolando, the representative who was in charge of the job was very responsive to any questions or issues we had. He seemed genuinely interested in our getting a nice bathroom which we could like (he recommended we make the pipes larger so the shower flow would be ample and adding the decorative tile inside the niches). Both these things added a lot to the looks and feel of the bathroom.
We are delighted with the end product. I enjoy it every day.
My only complaint is that after working with the same two man crew for two weeks and feeling comfortable with them and the level of their workmanship, a second crew showed up without notice. While the second crew turned out fine I would have appreciated a heads up about the change.
I would hire this company again without a second thought.
The first day of the remodel, the crew came at 8:00 (if not a bit earlier) and got started. They work like a small army or how I'd
envision Santa's elves to work - elves who wrap, elves that track the weather, and elves who pack the sleigh. mailroom elves, food elves, decorating elves ? even singing elves (you get the point).. Each of the crew seemed to have a function. They treated my home with care and the work with precision.
As is always the case, there was dust and disruption involved, but the crew made living at home a bearable process. I wish I could call out the names of each of the crew individually, but I'm afraid can't recall them all. Oscar as the project manager, was always accessible and accommodating when I had questions or concerns. Grover was like a quiet storm, never said much, but masterful and delivered in every way.The rest of the crew were great too, and very courteous. I'm so glad I went with my gut. I have a fabulous kitchen with open walls, quartz countertops, beautiful wood floors that match the rest of the wood floors perfectly.
Fortunately, I don't have another kitchen to remodel, but if I did, I would hire DMV. Thank you!
On the first day of my scheduled reno, we were hit by an ice storm. I was out early trying to chip the ice so that they could get in safely. Rolando and Oscar, the two project managers showed up first and helped me shovel and chip ice. They went absolutely above and beyond. The project timeline I was given was three weeks, for incidentals. Luckily everything ordered was in stock and everything happened faster than planned. DMV custom built my vanity because the dimensions required were not a standard size. When I chose items that were high end cost, they showed me comparable items that were more reasonably priced. Ronald gave me a custom shower design which he loved so much he said he was going to do the same thing in his home. My bathroom turned out even more beautiful than i imagined. In fact, I want to sleep in there tonight because I can't stop staring at it. I plan to hire DMV Kitchen and Baths for my next reno project.
We liked the work they did so much we brought them back this year to renovate a second bathroom, along with some additional work (replacing interior doors and some drywall work). The crew clearly takes pride in their craftsmanship, and everyone took the extra step to make sure we were satisfied. This even included taking steps we didn't know we needed in the first place! Their experience really showed in how they were able to anticipate what we wanted. Oscar was more than happy to answer our questions throughout the process with both bathrooms.
The approximate price quoted above reflects the total for both jobs, which was on par with what some contractors quoted us for renovating only one bathroom.
The only minor issue we had was with the timely delivery of some materials (some was due to weather, some to the manufacturer's delivery), but given all the things that could go wrong with a renovation, this was a minor inconvenience, and we were kept informed about the status as much as possible.
If you're looking for a contractor who has a keen eye for the details and wants to make sure you're happy, look no further than DMV Kitchen and Bath.
Cemmy came out to our house for the initial estimate. He arrived on time and discussed with us what we had in mind, which including knocking down a wall to combine the current kitchen and dining room into one larger kitchen. He emailed us the design idea and estimate a few days later. At this time we were still getting estimates from several other contractors and trying to feel our way through the entire process, but during that time Cemmy was not pushy at all. He did not repeatedly call us, pressuring us to make a decision like some of the other contractors did. He was so incredibly patient over this time period; promptly responding to every single email and question.
In addition to the million emails, we went to the showroom a few times and everyone there was so helpful too. Cemmy and Oscar helped us adjust the design and estimate to fit within our budget and helped us pick out all the materials. In addition, Javier was very knowledgeable and helpful in responding to some of our structural concerns (it?s an old house). Ultimately, it was this patience, willingness and responsiveness that helped us decide that DMV was the best choice and three months after our initial meeting we signed a contract with DMV.
Best decision ever. These guys are amazing. Being novices to the entire remodeling experience, we were very nervous about all the things that could go wrong and the horror stories we had heard from other people. Obviously, those people had not chosen to work with DMV because we had a fantastic experience. At the signing of the contract, we had set the date for when the work would start and when it would be completed. Sure enough, on the first day they were there at 8am ready to go. The crew worked 8am to 6pm, Monday through Saturday. Everyone was incredibly polite and they did a fantastic job of cleaning up at the end of every day.
The work we needed done was extensive and included gutting the entire kitchen; ripping up the floor and putting down a new subfloor for the new tile floor; moving HVAC vents; installing recessed lights and under-cabinet lights; installing all new cabinets and countertops; installing a tile backsplash; installing our new appliances and getting rid of the ones that we could not donate; and widening the entry way into the kitchen. They worked quickly and took great pride in the quality of their work. Every aspect was done with the utmost care. And on top of that, they even did some additional work for us that had nothing to do with the kitchen. Our bathroom exhaust vent had never worked well and the moisture was causing mold and mildew in our bathroom. We mentioned that to DMV and they said they would fix it without a problem. They put in an exahust vent in the attic and we have not had a problem with moisture since. Their flexibility and willingness to help us, at no cost to us, was so greatly appreciated.
Cemmy was in constant contact with us throughout the entire process. There were a couple bumps in the road, as to be expected with any large project. We would text Cemmy with our concerns and he would immediately respond and the issue would be addressed by the next day. They addressed every single concern we had and made sure that we were 100% satisfied with every aspect. They finished on time and everything looks fantastic! We are so happy with the kitchen and the entire experience. It will certainly save us a great deal of time when we can get around to remodeling our bathroom because we already know who to call.
I found DMV through Angie's list, gave them a call, and arranged for them to come out to discuss my project. Cemmy arrived on time and we proceeded to go over all aspects of the project. Although clearly someone who is more on the sales side of things he took plentiful notes as well as measurements. He sent a first draft quote in about a week (right in line with what he said he'd do). I indicated that I was interested in moving forward so we scheduled a follow up visit where Cemmy brought Javier over as well to do a more thorough quote. Javier was extremely knowledgable in all aspects of renovation/construction and was able to quickly identify which areas would be tricky and how best to address them. As I had expected the revised quote was higher than the original due to Javier?s better understanding of exactly how much work would be involved and our mutual agreement that pulling all permits for this type of project would be the best option. We then met at their office to sign a contract and pick out various materials. Although the contract covered the big picture work there were still a number of smaller details to be worked out to which we agreed to both be reasonable about. Javier and Cemmy assured me that their main job was our satisfaction and we?d work out any details as they came up.
Work started on time and we were introduced to Maynor who would be doing the bulk of day to day work. For the next 6 or so weeks we saw Maynor and friends from 8am to 6pm Monday through Saturday. Communication with Cemmy continued on picking out items and finalizing details, Javier stopped by a few times a week as needed to oversee work. Maynor did a great job doing the work with various specialists dropping by when needed for electricity and major plumbing.
In my mind the one thing that separates a good contractor from a great one is how things are handled when issues and changes arise (and issues and changes will always arise). Here are few examples of things that came up along the way and how they were handled:
- In picking out fixtures and such after the fact I chose a number of things that I knew clearly where more expensive than DNV could have reasonably had allowances for in their quote. In a some of those cases I even explicitly mentioned that if they needed me to cover the difference to let them know, but in each case they covered it entirely.
- During removal of debris they accidentally broke the globe hanging over our stairwell. They contacted me immediately apologizing and asking for exact model number so they could replace it. They purchased replacement and handled installation.
- One night a pipe that they had been working on earlier in the day sprung a small leak and was dripping on to the floor below. Javier had given me his cell number in case of any issues so I gave him a call. He answered his phone on the first call and asked if we needed to have someone sent out immediately (was about 8pm on a Saturday night at that point), I told him I had contained the leak and it could wait until morning. He had a team to fix the leak there 8am the next morning (Sunday). They also addressed the minor damage caused by the leak.
- When working on the design of our closet to laundry room conversion Javier pointed out that the design as it stood would leave a good bit of space to the sides of the laundry machines hard to access. He suggested moving the double closet doors and installing a new third door next to them. I agreed it made much more sense. Javier went ahead and did it the way he suggested which included a good bit of work to move the door and purchasing a new door all at no additional cost.
- In designing our bathroom vanity layout I failed to consider how the mirrors aligned with the cabinets and sinks below. Nothing had been installed yet but everything had been purchased. Cemmy agreed to change the cabinets for models that would allow everything to be better aligned at no additional cost.
- During rough-in inspection the inspector wanted an engineering report done on some of the I-beams to verify the support added to them was sufficient. DMV covered the full cost of the engineering report.
- When hanging the vanity mirrors it was clear that the dark color on the mirror frames I?d picked out was no where near the color of the wood on the cabinets (last time I ever pick a wood color from an online photo). Cemmy went ahead and returned the mirrors and after doing a considerable amount of research to find something that would fit into the space and match the color without any luck offered to build custom mirrors in exactly the size needed for our configuration. Looked perfect and again done at no additional cost.
- The method of laying the small square tiles in our shower floor clearly showed that one of our walls wasn?t straight. In walking through with Javier I jokingly asked if he could do something about my house being crooked. He obviously couldn?t but he wasn?t satisfied with the manner in which the tile was laid, he said it could be done better to minimize the visual appearance of the crooked wall. He then had the team tear up the entire shower floor and redo it from scratch. It added a few days to the project but resulted in a much better looking finish, again at no additional cost.
The two things to take away from all the experiences is DMV repeatedly did whatever needed to be done to make sure we were happy and they did it all at no additional cost. We did not have to spend a single penny over our original contracted price even though there were numerous changes done along the way.
Overall the way DMV does business with Javier overseeing the job and doing high level design; Cemmy handling contracting, logistics, and ordering; Maynor handling day-to-day execution from demolition through finishing touches; and occasional specialists where needed is pretty much a perfect mix for home renovation work. It provides both consistency and oversight. And the fact that they do it at a reasonable price and then don?t nickel and dime you after the fact just makes it all the better.
In the end the real question is if you?d hire someone again and for DMV I just did. Javier, Cemmy, and Maynor just started a new project on my house this week and I?m already thinking up projects for them to work on when this one is done.
DMV performed the work in a thorough and conscientious manner. The bathroom is exactly what I wanted: the marble tile is lovely and the installation of all fixtures was done promptly and correctly.
The apartment looks so much fresher and more modern with the popcorn ceiling removed and repainted, as does the whole apartment with a new coat of paint.
A special thanks for the professional services of: Cemmy, Javier, Maynor, Grover, Orlando,Eduardo and Primo.
They worked with us through all the details. They were very accommodating when we said we wanted to do some things (painting and selecting and purchasing our own sink/vanity independently of the contract). They agreed to install what we purchased and provided suppliers and suggestions for us to use when our original vanity supplier back-ordered our purchase..
They showed up on time and worked very long hours six days a week. Their supervisor communicated with us on almost a daily basis. Any phone calls we made were answered almost immediately. The workmen were pleasant and efficient and did everything they could to minimize the dust and disruption. Completely gutting a room is a messy and dirty job and they did everything they could to minimize the mess. They removed all the debris from our garage on a regular basis.
The men requested our input on each phase--where the towel bars should be; were we pleased with the lighting etc.; When the glass shower door was delayed because of a miscalculation and the Christmas holiday, they were very apologetic and stayed on top of the issue getting it to us before the original date.
As you can see from the above, we are very please with all that was done. We would recommend them to others.
I had to fix my house due to water and tenant damage, and then decided to just fix it and sell it. When my realtor saw it she said, "STUNNING" "better than she'd expected" and "we may be able to go up" in listing price because the work was so well done.
DMV were a pleasure to work with (Rolando), picking out items and even substituting items/finishes was quick and easy (they have a showroom that you can identify tiles, etc.). Apparently, they do not use subs, but for my job they used two different teams -- one to do the structural stuff under the floor; the other to do the kitchen/bath remodel. Both teams were great, communicative, responsive, etc. You get the sense that Javier (part owner) has a lot of integrity.
We hit a delay due to permits when we opened up the floor and realized more work needed to be done than initially predicted, but I understand that that's life and can't blame a contractor for an unknown/inconvenience. I've already had someone call for a reference wondering if DMV is equipped to do structural stuff AND cosmetic stuff, and I would definitely say YES. I have been a homeowner for 10years, I've dealt with my share of contractors, and I picked DMV out of 6 competitors - a couple of whom quoted astronomical prices that raised eyebrows. DMV met high standards, exceeded expectations, and were respectful of my finances at every step of the way, including when we needed to do a change order.
So, thank you Rolando, Javier - appreciate the chance to work with you and will look forward to calling you FIRST in the future.
My first stop was at DMV. Oscar Perdomo immediately made time for me, even though I had no appointment. I asked many questions, and he was able to offer several options to address the work that needed to be done. I asked him to also review an estimate from one of his competitors, and in a kind way, showed me the flaws in the estimate, and where those areas were addressed in his own. Bottom line, for the work that was needed, I was getting "more bang for the buck" from DMV. I cancelled my next 2 appointments.
A start date was made, and everything was smooth sailing from the beginning. His crew was polite, incredibly neat, and very conscientious of making the changes exactly as I wanted. It was amazing the amount of work they could do in one day. ALL walls, crevices, doors, etc were totally covered in plastic to reduce dust. At the end of each day, you hardly knew they had been there.
Oscar checked in regularly, and of course there were a few things that needed to be changed/adjusted during the course of the job. Each time, I could tell that ALL he was interested in was my satisfaction with the finished product. A shower unit needed an upgrade.....no problem. A mirror wasn't quite the style I wanted. He had his men remove it and replace it the next day. The tile work was amazing. The guys that did the granite countertops were real pros, also. Two countertops cut and installed in probably 2 hours.
Now, three months post job, Oscar is still checking in to make sure everything is still to my satisfaction. I would highly recommend this company, and will hopefully have them remodeling my kitchen in the spring.
