We've remodeled kitchens before, and working with DMV was BY FAR the best experience we could hope for.
We interviewed a number of contractors. There are a lot of sharks out there. But we were immediately impressed by Javier Nogales at DMV. He and his team are real professionals in every sense of the word: trust-worthy, pleasant, respectful, taking great pride in their work and going the extra mile (without our asking for it). Each and every one of the crew members kept our interests at heart. When going through a punch list, they met our every expectation-- and graciously. Hassle-free. Attitude-free. The work was done on time and on budget. Javier never flinched to take our calls or answer our texts, promptly and professionally.
We loved working with these guys. The final product is AWESOME.
Do not hesitate to give them a try.
We then worked with DMV to tailor the bid to exactly what we needed (and could afford). They were cheerful and cooperative throughout this process. When the construction began, the team communicated with us every day. The guys doing the work were a pleasure to have around. We hit some "old house" snags, and they were very flexible and had creative ideas to resolve the issues. For instance, when it became apparent that the original window frame (which had been buried) was an unusual shape, the crew suggested framing it with an interesting arrangement of tile, cut from the bullnose used for the walls, to accentuate its uniqueness. Also, when the special-sized sink that I ordered (not from the DMV showroom) arrived it was chipped, and the team patiently assessed several replacement sinks that I proposed until we found one that was just right.
Throughout the process, from our initial meeting through the finishing touches, our designer and project manager Alan was wonderful. He kept everything moving and made us feel good about our decision to go with DMV.
We hadn't decided completely on a design but Stephanie helped us at the showroom. Work started quickly and we were assigned one team of workers to do the work. Other than a few instances, the same two men did all of the work. And the work was quality. Everyday we spoke with the team and gave them feedback on location of items and other small details.
The team worked Monday through Saturday. Showed up by 8am each day and were willing to stay until they completed whatever they were working on that day (I'm sure they would have left earlier if we requested but we were eager to get the job done). They even showed up on bad weather days (including a snowstorm in which the foreman had to send them home).
The team was willing to please. My wife had a miscommunication with what direction she wanted the tile installed in the floor. After laying 75% of it, they pulled it all up and reinstalled it. The rework took a full day to complete but we were not charged extra for the hours. The crew was friendly and respectful of our home.
If you want a contractor that you speak to once, and come back with a perfect finished job, you may want to look elsewher (but you will also pay through the roof). In fact. we had some estimates that were $20,000 more than DMV, but we couldn't afford that. Rather, we knew how we wanted the rooms to look and we were very hands on. DMV had no problem with that, and they kept down the overall costs down. We also appreciated that they came in right on budget -- to the nickel.
Other than a few minor items on our punch list that took some time to resolve (disclored faucet and dripping facuet), we had a great experience with DMV. I feel very comfortable recommending them to others who want a very good job done at a reasonable price. We are actually in discussions with them about another bathroom remodel. Great company and great people.
Given our tight deadline, DMV sent multiple workers on a daily basis, making sure that they keep with the timetable. Like any renovation, there are some portions of the project where timing is beyond contractor's control (dependent on material supplier's timing). When we had a delay with the arrival of cabinets, DMV concentrated on another area of the project.
Rolando was our main contact from DMV and he was very responsive. If he is in a meeting, an office representative would send an email to let us know that he will get back to us as soon as he can. Rolando immediately relayed our requests to Grover, who was the point person at the project site, and Grover assembled his team to implement. Javier visited the project regularly to make sure permitting requirements and project timetable are met.
The DMV crew members were also professional and courteous. They were mindful to keep the premises as clean as they could after a day's work.
It was evident that the team takes pride in their work. We are meticulous like some other clients, but we are happy with what they did with our house. Although this happened rarely, when there was a part of the job that we like improved, they were happy to do it.
We recommend this team and we will hire them again for a future job.
Javier's team was also committed to quality work and keeping the customer happy. Several items that we had not specified in the contract (because, after all, it'd be a novel if you took the time to spell out everything) were done to a lower standard than we were expecting. For example, we paid to replace three windows. The team replaced them and replaced brickwork that needed to be removed but did not leave any flashing to protect the base. We asked for flashing and they added it at no charge. Another example - the crew had to cut into the floor to remove a load bearing wall. In the process they cut more than would be replaced by the cabinet going in the same space. They replaced that flooring with matching wood free of charge. For the full project they didn't seek to up-sell us along the way but were faithful to the estimate they'd provided.
Lastly, I'd mention they stand by their work with a warranty. They replaced two doors, and with some of the swelling and flexing that occurred going from winter to summer, the doors began to stick. I mentioned this to DMV and they sent the crew out promptly to fix it, again, free of charge.
The one critique I have is that the work crew didn't always make the best decisions. For example, during the demo, we walled off the kitchen to prevent dust from spreading (an inevitability with old plaster houses). The crew chose to take a work break by sitting down at our dining table in their work clothes. Can't begrudge a crew taking a break but tracking dirt, dust and sweat into a clean area of the house is always bad. Another example was the crew tried to break up our lead radiator by propping it up against the exterior wall of the house and hitting it with a sledge hammer. Needless to say, the wall started to lose that battle. To their credit, DMV apologized for both events and repaired the cracks in the wall free of charge.
Overall, this is a contractor that performs quality work with integrity for a reasonable price. And as anyone who's ever done a home project knows, that's hard to find. I would recommend them.
The tricky part of this project was routing a 3 inch drain line from the bathroom on the second floor to the basement main drain without destroying the rest of the house. Javier spent some time looking at all the various options for the route and ended up coming up with a creative solution that only required two small holes in other walls.
Cemmy did his usual great job going back and forth with me narrowing down the exact quote I was looking for as well as handling design, sourcing all materials, and scheduling.
Maynor and company did the same wonderful work that they've done on our other jobs working 8am - 6pm, six days a week until the work was done.
The quality of the work was great. There was only one small hick-up along the way when a city inspector didn't like some of the work the original builder had done. Javier handled the issue and didn't charge anything additional for having to do the extra work.
After a handful of projects with DMV I can't recommend them enough. Great quality work at a reasonable price with fabulous customer service. It's so nice to work with a team of people that take pride in their work and aren't looking to nickel and dime you.
