First, the price was my deductible for my home warranty. The overall price included $50 for the materials used and a minimum of $125 for an hour labor. I think there may have been an additional half hour of labor as well. But $75 was the cost to me. The ceiling fan in my master bedroom had a habit of turning on and off when various small appliances - clothes iron, vaccum - were plugged in, or the master bathroom exhaust fan was turned on. I was sure there was a wiring issue, but Alan diagnosed the problem as a bad receiver (attached to the fan) for the hardwired remote control (wall switch). After he replaced the malfunctioning parts with a new hand-held remote and reciever all is well. In'm thrilled to have an overhead light in my bedroom again (I hadn't been using the ceiling fan/light for fear of what might happen) and hopefully having the fan running in the bedroom will ease the burden on my nearly worn out A/C unit. Certified and Alan were fantastic and I'm looking forward to having them back to complete a couple of additional projects. Thank you!
Description of Work: Master bedroom ceiling fan was not working properly.

We scheduled for early Monday morning. The electrician called early and gave us the option of starting earlier. Fantastic, and he got it all done in a little over an hour. We want with the hourly rate option, good choice it seems, very happy with the service provided. This service was exemplary of why this company is highly rated.
Description of Work: - hooked up a waste disposal that was a "plug-in" to electrical wiring from the wall; - put a light in the ceiling; - fixed a dimmer switch; -went up on a ladder and confirmed a light worked that we thought did not. -looked at a lamp, and gave us pointers on what we would need to have a ceiling fan installed and get an outdoor outlet set up.

I have used CET's services twice. I used them several months earlier for a small "test" job before hiring them for the larger job that this review refers to, and in both cases, the office was great to work with, and the electrician was prompt, professional, and thorough. I spoke with Gary at the office, and Alan is the electrician who came to our house. Gary was able to answer several questions I had about what I needed to do and to suggest where I should purchase the light fixtures. Alan came to do the work. He called ahead and arrived on time, and then he took care to explain what he was doing and to answer my many questions. I had done considerable work in advance to trace cables and map circuit breakers, and I had a detailed plan as to what I wanted done. Since CET charges by the hour rather than by the job, this saved me some money. But best of all, Alan was able to comment on my plan and suggest improvements to it where applicable. Alan's work was meticulous. He paid attention to all details from making sure the three-way switches were arranged in the same order as the lights to even making sure the outlet screw slots were all vertical! CET charges slightly more per hour than some other places, but that doesn't make them more expensive. Alan worked very efficiently and wasted no time. I know he packed more into an hour than others I've used. Another advantage of using a service that charges by time rather than by the job was being able to tack on some small extras with killing the cost. I had replaced several outlets, but there was one that I just couldn't get to. Alan took care of that job in about 10 minutes. I had also done some work on my own, and I really wanted to a professional to look it over and make sure it was done properly, which Alan did while he was here. All in all, I was very satisfied with the work and with the results. I would definitely use CET again for a small job or a large job. Since our house was built in 1952, I have no doubt that this was not the last time we'll have to call an electrician. Next time, I will just call CET.
Description of Work: We hired Certified Electrical Technologies to install new fluorescent fixtures in the basement, replacing pull-chain lights with hard-wired lights controlled by a wall switch. We also had them move a few things to different circuit breakers and to check some work we did ourselves.

After reading the positive Angie's List reviews for this company, I called last Wednesday (May 5) to inquire about getting an estimate for my repair work. The lights in our kitchen kept going out spontaneously, but turning the kitchen light switch off and back on would get the lights to come back on. I was concerned about a short but wanted to make sure there wasn't a minor problem such as a faulty switch before anyone started investigating the wiring in my walls/ceiling. I spoke with Gary Epstein, who told me that the cost would be $125 for a one-hour service visit plus the cost of any necessary repairs. He then proceeded to ask me what types of lightbulbs we were using in the kitchen, as he indicated that the wrong lightbulbs could cause the problem by overheating. I was impressed that he would attempt to find a cause that could potentially deprive him of business! After hearing what bulbs we were using, he told me he did not think that would be causing the problem. He told me that because all of the lights were going out at once, he thought it sounded like either a problem with the switch or some type of other connector. Either scenario would, he told me, cost only a "couple of dollars" to repair. I also asked him about repairing an outlet in a bedroom that had caused a large spark during its last use. He also indicated he thought that would only cost a few dollars to replace and that they likely could do that in the same visit. He was able to schedule a service call for Monday morning, and gave me an 8am to 12 pm window, telling me we would be called approximately 30 minutes before the visit. This morning, we got our call at 8:15 and the technician was at our house by 8:30. While my husband stayed at the house, I went to drop my son off at preschool and by the time I got back shortly after 9, I saw the technician leaving. In the short time I was gone, he had identified and repaired a faulty switch in the kitchen and repaired the broken outlet in the bedroom. Gary's quote was dead-on: each repair cost a grand total of $2. So, overall, within 5 days of my initial call, we had our problems solved, with a technician who showed up on-time (at the early end of the service window), got the work done within 30 minutes, charged us the exact price I was quoted ($129 total), and even played ball with our dog! While in our case, the service cost itself ended up being much larger than the actual cost of the repairs, this was not work that either my husband or I could have done ourselves, and we thought the price was extremely fair given how fast and efficient the work was. We will DEFINITELY use this company again if we ever need electrical work done.
Description of Work: Company was hired to (a) investigate what was causing the recessed lighting in our kitchen to keep spontaneously going out and (b) repair a faulty outlet in a bedroom. Both problems were successfully repaired.

I received an appointment a couple of days after calling and the company was prompt and responsive. I described several tasks that needed to be done and the over the phone estimates were right on. The electrician was on time, professional, efficient. He creatively solved a problem of light fixture placement in the laundry room. I am extremely pleased with Cert. Elec. and would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I had a new line installed in the ceiling of my laundry room and 5 fluorescent strips installed; an outdoor flood light was wired and installed; an additional outdoor fixture replaced; an indoor ceiling fixture was installed where only a ceiling plate existed; and a recessed light that had a bad thermostat was repaired.

A long story that probably amounts to nothing more than a misunderstanding. I sent up an appointment for a time when my wife was home. According to my wife, he told her he didn't want to wander in the yard without ringing the bell. Ok, but after that I would have pulled out my ladder and examined the problem. The problem was outside and I had sent photographs of the problem and of my electrical panel. However, Gary Epstein wanted to come into the house. I called home and my wife put him on the phone, apparently just after he arrived. Gary repeated a long story about needing to involve Pepco and have the power turned off. I asked what he thought of the problem and he said he hadn't looked at it yet. I found that to be surprising. He didn't and he never said what would be needed for the repair itself. The phone call was strange to me; I never had any repair person not get to the point. I said this was a long story. He wanted to know where the main water supply was to see if the electrical was grounded there, not that he said that at first. After he saw it, I said why don't you go out and look at the problem. Apparently, that was too much for him and he abruptly walked out of the house, didn't come back, and refused to send me a quote.
Description of Work: No service performed. Needed outside electrical supply from Pepco line fixed.

Response from Certified Electrical Technologies
We typically don't respond to reviews but this report is so fictitious it requires a response. The support for the main utility cable on this house had broken loose and needs to be replaced. Emailed photos confirmed this. We have made similar repairs in this neighborhood numerous times, so we are well aware of the procedure, I explained the procedure (which I described as complicated and relatively expensive) and scheduled an appointment to see the electrical panel which will be inspected during the process by the county. During and after the visit "Mr. Rocket", as he refers to himself, was highly agitated that I would not consider "putting a screw in it". I once again explained the proper repair and suggested that if he wished to do it otherwise to hire a handyman. To those reading this, please understand we are a licensed electrical contracting firm with over 30 years of experience. The installations and repairs that we perform are going to be done properly and according to local and national electrical codes. We do not compromise our standards at the request of clients and will, as we did in this case, decline the project if the client wishes the job to be done incorrectly.

Great job by Forrest! He called before he arrived to let us know he was on his way, showed up promptly and got the work done quickly and cleanly. The project overall went well. He was very fast and efficient, but did not rush or do anything improperly. I was extremely happy with the outcome. Would call this company again.
Description of Work: We needed an electrician in to support our general contractor. The CET electrician was prompt and professional, and rewired our framed-in bathroom to support an extra switch, two new outlets, an outlet for a vanity light, an exhaust fan, and did everything very quickly and cleanly. He also moved the laundry plug and changed one of the breakers in our fusebox, which was incorrectly wired (I did not ask him to and was happy that he had taken initiative). The general contractor was impressed by the clean work and the speed with which it was done. I would use CET and this electrician in particular again.

Prompt, professional, and at a fair price. The one draw back was the HVAC system did not work afterwards and the tech had already left. It was a Friday evening. I called their number, and they said that I would have to wait until Monday. This was upsetting as it should have been checked before the tech left. Fortunately, the weather was not too cold nor too hot, so I thought I could get by. Saturday morning, the tech came back to check on it. I commend him for coming back on the weekend. Overall, they were pretty good. I'll probably use them again.

This was the best experience I have had with a workmen in my house. The electrician showed on time, made all the corrections that I had asked for, added a new outlet for my freezer when I discovered that it needed it's own outlet. He even helped me when my dog decided to hide and got trapped where I never could have gotten her out safely. I found this company on Angie's List and if this is the only company that I find on this list, it was well worth the price of admission.

The job was tough to estimate as it wasnt possible until the lights were taken apart to really see what was going on. Gary, the owner, gave me an initial estimate which was very fair and I could have stayed within that figure but Forest his electrician, advised me of helpful options at each stage of the repair and any extra costs involved. I felt the advice was all very helpful and resulted in an excellent job done to time in a professional manner. All contact with the company was very pleasant and I was impressed that the company thought ahead about the weather and rescheduled in advance when rain was forecast. I have no hesitation in recommending the company.

The work went fabulous on my 70 year old home. There is always some kind of problem that arises when working on anything with this old of a house. He was very knowledgeable when he ran into any snag. There was no problem using the parts that I had bought at the hardware store. One repair on an outside outlet didn't have to be performed because of the hidden reset button (no charge). He did a great job of cleaning up everywhere after the work.

The technician called about 30 minutes prior to his arrival which was very much appreciated. When the technician first arrived, he was a little upset that the switch in the kitchen was completely unwired, and started talking about how he may have to rewire the entire circuit which was going to entail running brand new wiring from the box to all of the switches (dining, kitchen, living room, bath)...I started getting worried, and then he said he would TRY to figure out the way that it was. After about 45 minutes he had it figured out and working normally (no new wiring - yay!). After finishing in the kitchen, he went upstairs where we needed a switch moved down about 2 feet (it was about 1 ft. from the ceiling), and he was able to get that done quickly. Overall I think the job took around 2 hours, he cleaned up after his work and I am very happy with the quality of work that was done. I would definitely recommend Certified Electrical! Great prices, and good service.
Description of Work: We had a switch that needed to be moved down the wall about 2 feet, and put in a double switch. We also had a switch that was strangely wired, and during our remodel the switch came undone.
