Called and they told me the hourly price and said they could usually get a new fan installed within the first hour, as long as the box in the ceiling could support the weight of the fan. Our box was able to support the fan, so they arrived on time, installed it within the hour, and did a great job.
Description of Work: Called Certified Electric for an estimate on replacing an existing light fixture with a new ceiling fan for our son's room. They told me the hourly price and said they could usually get a new fan installed within the first hour, as long as the box in the ceiling could support the weight of the fan. Our box was able to support the fan, so they arrived on time, installed it within the hour, and did a great job.

My original contact with the company was on Apr 30, when I called them to come out and replace a defective circuit breaker on my electrical panel. I had decided that I would get an upgrade to a higher amperage to my house, but had not decided when to have it done. I discussed this with the technician who came on the 30th and decided to have CET do the upgrade. They performed the work one day while I was at work (I had arranged with my neighbor to give them access to the house. I was told by CET that, after the installation was done, Montgomery County would come out and approve the installation, after which Pepco would come and do the final connection to their power. After the initial installation I was dismayed because the work at the back of the house looked very messy - there was a huge loop of cable sticking out a couple of feet from the house. I assumed that this was to be taken care of when Pepco did the final connection. I called to let CET know when the County had done the inspection and approved it, and CET then contacted Pepco about get the work complete. I was told when I talked to the guy from CET that Pepco was unpredictable and would show up unannounced "sometime in the next six months."Pepco did come with no warning. I don't know exactly when they showed up, but when I was in my back yard one day I noticed that the big loop of cable was gone and the new, fat electrical cable was connected to the power going into the house. However the work was very messy. There is damage to the vinyl trim near the roof of my house, and there is a bit of cable that was left attached to the house but not connected to anything else. A roll of electrical tape, some bits of wire and a couple of fasteners were left lying around on the ground. Today I called CET to see whether they were planning to come back and finish up the cosmetic touches that are needed to make it look like something other than a quick-and-dirty fix. I was told by Steve that once they did the installation, they were finished. Any further tidying up need to be done by Pepco, he said. Given that Pepco is a horrible utility company with a bad reputation for customer service and that they are currently attempting to restore power after the storm at the end of June, I doubt that I will get any satisfaction from them. Consequently I am left with damaged trim by my roof, and an ugly job of connecting the power to my house. I guess I should count my blessings - at least I have power today.I know that CET is not responsible for the detritus that Pepco left scattered about, but I was hoping that they would come back and put on the finishing touches. They will not do that. They were the ones that originally pulled the trim away from the roof when they installed the new cable to begin with, so I would like to see them feel some responsibility for restoring it as much as they can. There are other highly rated electrical service companies on Angie's list. I doubt that I will use CET again.
Description of Work: The company did a "heavy-up" on my electrical system - they replaced the electrical panel, upgraded the electrical system to 200 amp service, and added a lightning arrester. They also did the necessary grounding and bonding.

The process os upgrading a home's electrical service is comprised of 3 major components. They are: Performing the work which we do, The County/City Electrical Inspection, and the Final Connection performed by the Utility company serving that area. As part of the project, we explain the procedure to each customer and coordinate the customer's interaction with the County and Utility as much as possible. We also make it clear that we have no control over either the County or the Utility. It becomes problematic for us when the County or Utility fails to show up as scheduled or do poor work. Both of these situations happen relatively frequently as these employees are not held accountable for their poor performance. We no longer perform this type of work in Washington, DC for this very reason. The DC Inspection staff is so disorganized that they rarely keep their appointments. Customers got justifiably annoyed at multiple missed appointments and even though they know we had no control over DC employees, they ultimatley held us responsible for the negative experience. We are having increasing problems in PG County and may have to re-evaluate doing work there as well. This particular job was completed on time, on budget, and passed inspection as guaranteed. We did everything that we represented that we would do, exactly the way we explained we would. It seems unfair that the poor review we received was resulting from PEPCO's poor performance. It also seems unfair that the customer wants us to make up for PEPCO's poor customer service by returning to clean up after their employees. We understand and share the frustration in dealing with large bureaucracies, but we should not be held accountable for them. It would be more appropriate to give us a terrific review for the great service that we provided and separately review PEPCO for their poor performance. That said, we try to ensure 100% customer satisfaction and we will contact the customer and see if there is anything we can do to make the situation better

Tech came out and tells my wife that the fixture holding the flood lights is also broke and he had to come back when we had that part also. They charged $125.00 and he could have replace just the sensor. The only problem was one of the two flood lights would be hanging down a bit which is almost where it needs to be anyway. I also looked at the fixture just a few days prior and it wasn't broken then so I'm a bit suspicious that it was caused by the tech either moving it or bumping it with the ladder. He tells my wife they will not charge full price when he returns ( no travel will be charged). I called the office and they tell me "well that's up to the tech but we always charge full price". There is just no excuse for this: They should have done the work that I asked them to: replace the sensor. Now I'm out $125 and the light still didn't work. It may not have been perfectly positioned but it would have worked. I ended up calling someone else who charged less and competed all the work.rns CET did refund the full $125.00 I had paid so I?m pleased with their final resolution. Just to set the record straight: the motion sensor I supplied was NOT defective. It?s just that the tech thought we should replace the lamp assembly also which in my opinion didn?t not need replacing to get everything working. I did contact the office and they told me flat out they do not charge less for return visits, contrary to what the tech said. While there may have been miscommunications during the visit, there is no miscommunication regarding that aspect. I was told I would have to pay another $125.000 to get them back out again and that?s when I decided to look elsewhere.
Description of Work: Called them out to repalce an outdoor motion sensor. I had purchased a new sensor to replace the existing one.

Unfortunately sometimes situations like this arise when customers wish to supply their own material. We stand behind our work 100%. That means we guarantee our work for LIFE. Material that we suppy is warranteed by us. We cannot be responsible for material that we do not supply and do not offer any warrantee for material that is customer supplied. We arrived to replace an exterior fixture and found that the fixture purchased from the Home Center Store was damaged in the box. The customer was given the choice to install the fixture or get another fixture and we would not charge for the visit and return when she had the new fixture. She chose to have the fixture installed at that time and the tech offered to replace the fixture in the future if she wished at a greatly discounted rate. We did exactly what we were asked and were never contacted by her husband (author of the review) indicating that there was a problem. Our techs leave a postcard for customers to evaluate our service and our office sends an email after the service is provided as a follow-up to see if everything was done to satisfaction. We have never received any indication that anything was wrong with the service visit. Our policy is for 100% customer satisfation. We will do everything we can to make sure everything is perfect. If not, we will refund the cost of the service. Unfortuately, if we do not know if there is a problem, we cannot address the problem. We will attempt to contact this customer and see if we can resolve the issue or make a full refund.

Description of Work: I needed an electrician to fix an electrical problem that a handyman service made worse. CET promptly returned my call, fit me into the schedule in a short amount of time; called when they said they would call before the service; arrived early and finished the entire job within an hour. The price above also reflects a part that they needed to install. They also fixed two other small problems while they were at my home, without adding time to the job. If I have another electrical problem, I would totally call CET.

Thanks for the great review. We get a lot of calls like this. Handymen are great for minor carpentry repairs, but they are not licensed contractors who are familiar with local and national electrical, plumbing, or mechanical codes. Frequently they perform work that is beyond their expertise and knowledge and will perform work that is incorrect and sometimes dangerous. All of our highly-experienced techs are familiar with electrical codes and perform repairs and installations correctly and according to code. There is no value in hiring someone to perform a project incorrectly. We look forward to your next project !

It was a great experience. I had exchanged emails with the company to get an estimate (along with two other companies). CET's estimate was the best and most complete. They sent a postcard prior to the appointment as a reminder. The technician arrived within the scheduled time window, having called first. He immediately went to work. His manner was extremely professional and thorough. The final bill was less than the estimate because the technician was so efficient.

After discovering over the weekend that there was no outlet box in our ceiling for a new light fixture I wanted to install, I called CET on Monday and made an appointment for Friday morning between 8 and noon. The person making the appointment asked some questions about the job, and provided information on how the company charges for its work. I received an email confirmation of the appointment, as well as a reminder card in the mail. The job went very well. The electrician was on time, very professional, and consulted with me as needed about where the fixture I had bought from Lowes should be placed, etc. All costs were carefully identified ahead of time. The electrician was very neat and worked quickly but carefully. The whole job took about 90 minutes. I was very impressed. The price was right, too. I definitely will call CET again.

When I initially called, the representative was responsive. I described what we needed done. He asked questions to determine what materials would be needed and gave me an estimate. Because he wanted to make sure the technicians had the right materials, we emailed him detailed descriptions of everything with several photos. He responded that the information was helpful and they would be prepared. The first electrician showed up very promptly. However, he apparently had not been told of any of the work or specific materials needed, so we had to take time to go over everything with him. He got to work while waiting for the the second electrician, who showed up about an hour later. Two electricians were needed to deal with the 16 foot ladder to change the light bulbs in the high ceiling. The first electrician completed everything before the second one arrived, so when he got to the house they worked on changing the light bulbs. Then they realized they had the wrong kind of light bulbs. I said that shouldn't have happened because we had emailed details and pictures with the person we spoke to on the phone. The electricians were given none of that information. Then one of them left to go to the hardware store to purchase the right kind of bulbs. While he did this, the other one worked on the invoice. Installing the light bulbs, including the time taken for him to go out and purchase the correct ones took an hour. I did not expect the whole thing to take so long (over 4 hours) and I was late for an appointment, so they left quickly and did not replace the furniture they had moved. After they left I discovered a huge scratch across my new coffee table from where they had moved it. They also left a bag of tools. I called the company again and had to schedule a time for them to pick it up, plus examine the scratch. One of the same electricians came, but he had nothing he could do about the scratch. He was supposed to pass on the information to his boss. I mentioned the amount of time the job took, plus the ruined coffee table, and none of this should have happened because we communicated everything in advance, so we shouldn't have been charged so much. He shared with me that the person with whom we had spoken to, had abruptly left the company. He agreed the job at our house should not have taken so long, and he would tell his boss that we should not have been charged so much. He said hopefully we would hear something in a couple days. It has been a month and we have heard nothing.
Description of Work: Several light bulbs on a very high ceiling were changed. Two outlets were installed. Circuit box was checked for possible needed repairs and a vanity light was checked to see if it could be repaired.

First it should be known that NONE of what was written is true. Both techs showed up together which was necessary to pick up and deliver the 16' ladder (very heavy and cumbersome). The customer supplied the information about the bulbs and the techs arrived with those bulbs. Upon arrival the customer decided she did not want that type of bulbs and was given the choice to use them or for one of the techs to go get the bulbs she now wanted. She asked that the tech go get the bulbs which he did and installed them as asked. He went to a nearby Lowes and was back within 30 minutes adding very little to the cost. Approximately a week after the service the customer called and said that the table had been damaged and that tools and "a lot of material" had been left at her house. We immediately setup and appointment to return to the home to investigate. The customer never showed up for the appointment and the tech left a card on her door letting her know we arrived as scheduled (our normal procedure). She called again and setup another appointment. When the tech arrived she showed him the table which was scratched the tech reminded her that she had removed all of the furniture from the room prior to the visit and replaced it after the visit. Neither of the techs touched the table or scratched it, in fact hey had never seen it. There were also no tools left on the job. The "lots of material" turned out to be a small paper bag with 1 plastic electrical box that was likely mistaken by the techs as trash and left next to the trash can in the garage. After an extended conversation, the tech learned that she made up all of the "reasons" because she wanted us to return and was hoping that we sent a supervisor (instead of one of the original techs) in the hope that the supervisor would take responsibility for the table that she damaged and that she was hoping to negotiate an additional discount since she felt the service was too expensive. Since we strive for 100% customer satisfaction we would have worked out a solution with regard to her impression that the charges were too high. In fact, the charges were exactly what she was quoted for the 2 techs prior to service. Given that she was not honest about her billing issue, scheduled 2 additional unnecessary visits and then attempted to have us accept repsonsibility for damage that she caused, we did not think it was appropriate to make any pricing concessions.

I only called for an estimate but the guy on the line was somewhat inpatient with me although informative. To me, customer service is very important, and I did not get a good impression in that respect. I went with Absolute Electrical where the prices were estimated slightly less and the phone call gave me an impression that they have great customer service. I will be writing a review of them after I have the service done. I don't mind a lot of questions and actually, more questions were asked by Absolute Electrical. It may have been a bad day for the guy on the line when I called Certified Electrical Technologies, but his impatience with me was enough for me to make a decision. Thanks to Certified Electrical Technologies for their response to my initial review.

We bought a Big Deal Voucher and weren't able to schedule the work before the expiration date. Nevertheless, Gary told us he would honor the voucher and let us schedule the work when it was convenient for us. Allen showed up on time, was extremely polite and did a great job. He answered all my questions, made the hole in the wall easy to patch, and was conscientious about cleaning up after himself. They do all their work on a time and materials basis so you never pay for time that isn't used based on a padded estimate. Despite charging by the hour, Allen worked quickly and efficiently. There is obviously a mark up on the materials but it was not excessive.

Thanks for the great review. We tend to estimate conservatively so the final cost usually comes in at or less than our estimate. We prefer to do this instead of what other firms do which is to estimate low just to get the job and then have to explain to the customer why they are being charged more than they estimated. We regularly get calls from customers who chose the lowest estimate they could find and were disappointed either with the final price or the poor service they received from other firms (or both). Our pricing is very competitive and we offer 100% customer satifaction. This is why we have become a regional leader in electrial service in our 33 year company history. The Electrical Code has changed rearding exterior outlets in the past few years. Not only do they have to be GFCI oultets, but they they need a special cover called an in-use cover which allows the outlet to be used even in inclement weather. Glad we were able to bring all of your exterior outlets up to current code !

Everything went great. The guy came right on time. He took care of what I needed in about half an hour. When I called in and made an appointment the receptionist asked for a credit card number because I would be charged if I canceled within a certain time period. I felt very odd about this. I called back the next day and I got another receptionist and she assured me that it was written down and kept under lock and key. In the end I was very happy with the experience. The initial scheduling call was a pleasure. I called on a Friday and wanted to schedule something as soon as possible so they got me in for the following Monday, which I find to be incredible. They gave me a window of 8AM-12PM, but when I told them I had to be at work at 1PM and the inspection would take an hour, they said their inspector would arrive at 8AM and they would make us his first appointment. Our inspector Chuck was not just on time- he was early! He is a very nice man who not only knows the houses in Bowie, but knows electrical systems like the back of his hand. He was perfectly comfortable with me walking around with him throughout the entire inspection and peppering him with questions. He seemed completely at ease with his answers, despite my sometimes repetitive queries. He was able to affirm that our house is currently safe (it is a new purchase for us so we wanted to get a baseline) and had some recommendations. His recommendations were a very reasonable balance of professional and DIY. While he was at our house he also filled out paperwork for us to get an estimate on replacing our electrical panel and doing a service upgrade (from 150 to 200 amps). This is a free service they perform, but it was great of Chuck to be willing to do it in conjunction with his safety inspection so we didn't have to find a separate time for someone to come. Great experience, I would definitely work with them again.

Alan was great to work with and I'll definitely call CET in the future. To start, Alan called before coming over. He was very punctual and got started right away asking me questions about the job and looking around the work area. He was very methodical and exuded professionalism while completing the work. It was slightly tricky because the basement area where the wires needed to run through is full of obstacles, primarily the HVAC system, so it was pretty difficult to see. Alan did a great job and made surgical cuts into a small area of wall and did a very clean install. He clipped the wires in the basement and left me ample slack to future-proof me in case I wanted to split the lines in the future. He cleaned up all the work areas after he was finished.

I also had a cat5 line I ran haphazardly from the living room to the basement that I wanted tidied up and mounted in the new wall jack as well.

Thanks for the terrific review ! The Phone and Cable companies no longer install Phone, CATV or Data Jacks in homes, so we install quite a few for our clients. First, we assess the type of system the client has and what needs to be done. Then our highly-trained techs execute the paln that we have worked-out with the client. We are pleased that you liked how everything worked out for your CATV & Data needs !

Heartily recommend Certified Electrical Technologies, in particular the two gents we worked with--Phil and Rick. Our project started small--a light bulb out--that turned into a much larger project as we decided to (i) replace all the ragwire snaking throughout our 110 year old house, (ii) install two fans, and (iii) install some wall switches. Rick and Phil came out, gave it a thorough look-see and gave us a realistic estimate and timeable for the work. They were always on time, always a pleasure to have around, did a GREAT job of minimizing the holes in the drywall to snake the replacement wiring, and always left the house cleaner than when they showed up! The price for the work was great, and we have recommended Certified (in particular Rick and Phil) to our friends. Thanks, you all!

The safety check went well and they pointed out several issues that we had to address. I had thought the safety check would have included a physical check of the smoke alarms but there was only a visual inspection. The rest of the inspection went well. CET came again later that week to rewire some of our attic wiring and to make sure that our knob and tube wiring was abandoned. The electrician came on time and worked efficiently. He let me know that when he finished the job that he still had 15 mins left of the hour that he was to be paid and he asked if there was anything else we wanted him to look at. I pointed out an issue with an exterior light, he found that two wires were not properly connected and he reconnected the wires.
Description of Work: CET came to perform a home electrical safety check and a few days later they came to re-wire some of our wiring in the attic and check to make sure the knob and tube wiring in the attic was abandoned.

Our 10 Point Safety Check is a great idea for anyone with an older home. We check things like the service panel, outlets, GFCI's & Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Smoke Detectors must be changed al least every 10 years according to the National Fire Protection Agency. They lose their ability to detect smoke even if they appear to be working.

Very well. Long story short, there was more damage than the original cut line. Certified Electrical found and repaired multiple problems quickly and for far less than I was expecting. Have a few other jobs queued up in the not too distant future.

Overall I am completely satisfies with the company.
Description of Work: I took advantage of a Angie's List special. These guys are great to work with. The electrician came out and did a safety inspection through which some additional concerns I was aware of were discussed. He provided some suggestions and on leaving provided a list of what he found and what we had talked about. I will definately use them for the work and future needs.

Chose CET based on prior Angie's list rating and was not disappointed. Tech "Chuck" called 30 minutes prior to arrival and was on time. Made sure I was aware that I would have get some dry wall work done as a result of installation. He did a great job of installing and dropped wiring through the attic space as opposed to going through additional dry wall which saves me some work. Everything went smoothly including the troubleshoot of the kitchen fixture. He explained the issue and its resolution which was simple. After doing all the work he was careful to clean all areas before departing. Highly recommend CET for your electrical lighting issues.

Thank you for the fantastic review ! Frequently it is necessary to cust some holes to install Ceiling Fans, outlets & Lighting fixtures. Our techs cut as few as possible and usually are able to save the pieces of drywall to make patching & painting easier. We always let clients know that while we do great electrical work, you don't want an electrician patching or painting. We have found by experieince that time we spend patching (and the associated cost) is better left to a professional who is more proficeint with these tasks. We look forward to your next project !

They were wonderful. I chose him because Washington Consumer's Checkbook gave him high reviews. They were fabulous. I thought they were ridiculously inexpensive. For the pricing, I didn't go out to get competitive bids but I was very pleased. They were really wonderful and I plan on using them again.

I called to request the service and received a prompt call back to discuss the job and the materials required. On the appointed day, the electrician arrived on time after calling to say he was 30 minutes away. We talked through the job together and he worked hard through the day, periodically updating me. He was very professional and the work performed was done very well. The price was fair though not a bargain. I feel that I got what I paid for, excellent work and service.

We highly recommend Certified Electrical Technologies. Our electrician, Dave Petry, was extremely professional, punctual and knowledgeable. Dave has over 20 years experience as an electrician and his work was outstanding. We would use Certified Electrical again, and request Dave. However, the central scheduling service is not as customer friendly.
Description of Work: All of our smoke alarms replaced. Front porch and back porch lights replaced. A overhead light installed in our washroom. A whole house surge protector was also installed (we used an Angie's list coupon for this part of the service).
