Dave arrived on time -- on the morning of the day Hurricane Sandy struck our area. I half-expected him to reschedule given the dangerous weather conditions, but he donned his work booties to protect our carpets and went to work. We needed these lights to illuminate a basement wall where we plan to hang a number of family photos. The work was exactly what we wanted -- the wall is bathed in light, the recessed cans neatly installed, and the work area vacuumed free of dry wall dust. Despite the fact that Dave had other appointments after ours, he increased his risk of encountering seriously hazardous weather by fixing a cable outlet before he left -- at no extra charge. We are pleased and impressed with the professional approach Dave brought to our job. We recommend him highly to anyone who needs similar electrical services.

Thank you for the terrific review. We were able to keep most of our appointments (some had to cancel due to no power) and we were very busy for the next few days restoring power and solving issues caused by the storm. We hope you enjoy your new lighting and look forward to your next project.

I really never expected to be gouged by an Angie's list rated company. Certified Electrical Technologies must have a post hurricane price list. I called to get a quote on installation of four bathroom fans, and a portable generator transfer switch. I stated I could provide the hardware and would identify the circuits before installation. The telephone quote for a transfer switch wired into my existing panel would be $900. (Complete switch kits are $299 on Amazon). I was also told that my panel may not accept a switch and they may need to install a second panel for $2000. I didn't wait for the bathroom fan estimate. Just because I'm not an electrician, doesn't mean I don't understand the basics of what needs to be done.

We install a lot of connections for generators and have several reviews here concerning this type of project. This is one of our signature projects, and when possible, it gives our client the ability to power every electrical device in their home (up to the capacity of the generator). It is a very unique and elegant solution for connecting a portable generator to a home's electrical system. Our installation does not, however, use non-UL listed DIY kits like the ones sold in Home Center stores and online. We use UL listed, professional grade products that although may cost more, have been designed and tested to provide a safe and dependable solution. Our goal is to provide a top-quality, safe installation at a competitive price and our 400+ positive reviews seem to indicate that we are having some sucess in acheiving this goal. Although this subscriber did not bring up the DIY kit, we would have explained it's deficiencies and declined to install it if that was their suggestion. We will never compromise the safety or integrity of a project by using inferior quality merchandise or installing something in a non-code approved manner.

Alan showed up right on time. He immediately got to work and impressed us with his professionalism. Not only did he replace the 22 outlets, there were a couple other odds and ends he enthusiastically took care of within the 2 hour period. We discussed a future project (whole house surge protection), which we have since had installed Oct 04, 2012. Alan was a pleasure to work with. We will certainly call Certified Electrical Technologies for any future electrical issues. We highly recommend this company to anyone with electrical problems.

The installer arrived on time, was very nice and professional and overall did an excellent job. The only thing I didn't understand, and wasn't clear in the original adverstisment, is we needed 2 breaker slots on my electrical panel for the surge protector. If the panel was full they couldn't have installed it unless they replaced some breakers with half size breakers or installed a new sub panel (rather expensive). I never got around to writing the review until recently, but the surge protector has worked well in all the storms we've had since. It was a very good experience

A Whole House Surge Arrestor is the least expensive insurance a homeowner can purchase. It is a relatively inexpensive item that comes backed with a lifetime warranty for parts and labor. The Arrestor protects every electrical item in a home from both Lightning and Surges caused by the local Electrical Utility. It also comes backed with a $25,000 protected equipment warranty from the manufacturer. We have never had a client sustain damage after we installed an Arrestor They require 2 avaiable spaces in the home's circuit breaker panel. If no space is available, typically we can make space by re-arranging the existing circuit breakers.

I was told that the work initially would run $200, but that was quickly adjusted to $350 after the work was already started. I was also told there would be some holes that would require patching but nothing too outrageous. After the work was complete the electrician said he was done and could I pay. Needless to say the house was a mess - there was drywall dust and debris everywhere and the amount and size of holes to patch was outrageous along with overall sloppy work. I called the company and spoke with the manager who was very condescending and even laughed at me while I was going through the issues. He said they would clean better, wow that's a real help - sarcasm here, but at that point after being treated like the farthest thing from a customer I just wanted them out of the house. I would NEVER ever use this company again.

Like most projects, we provided a phone estimate for the subscriber. Unfortunately the subscriber failed to mention that the house was extremely old and was built with plaster and lathe construction. At some point in the history of the house drywall was installed over the plaster. Our tech identified this unusual construction and immediately brought it to the subscribers attention. He indicated he would have to cut more holes than normal and that the cost would be more than the subsciber was quoted over the phone. BEFORE he started the project the subscriber agreed to the new estimate and the number of holes that needed to be cut in order to install the new cable. He kept her informed of his progress throughout the project and she never indicated anything except approval until he presented the invoice for payment. She immediately called our office and said that the project was more expensive than she wanted and that there were more holes than she wanted. She confirmed that she had approved of the new estimate and knew that addtional holes needed to be cut. She then said that although the tech cleaned up there was still dust in the room. Our techs use drop cloths to contain the debris and then vacuum the work area. Anytime we cut holes there is always going to be dust created. We advise clients to remove as many furnishings as possible from the work area as possible to eliminate them from becoming dusty. Since the tech was still at the home we offerered to have the tech dust the entire room and to mop the floor if she would lend us a mop. She then complained that a blank cover the tech installed on an existing hole in her ceiling was the wrong size. We offered to have the tech go and get a larger cover. The subscriber declined our offers to clean up or adjust anything that she wanted to make her happy. She then said that the only thing she wanted to do was to go on Angie's List and post a bad review. We immediatley sent an email indicating that we are happy to return and do anything we could to address any issues, but the subscriber did not respond. As with any client, if given the opportunity, we will do anything we can to provide 100% customer satisfaction. When the tech was leaving the subscriber made the comment that her husband was going to be angry that she spent more than expected and we believe that this issue alone was the cause for her complaint. Since we offer a lifetime warranty on our work we will return at any point to make corrections if requested.

The sheathing on the electric service cable to my house is frayed and needs to be replaced. I described the situation to the person who answered the phone, and immediately he said that everything -- cable, meter box, and electrical panel -- had to be replaced and that it would cost a whopping $2500. I asked for clarification; the problem appeared to be just the sheathing, why did everything have to be replaced? The person kind of snorted at me and said it was not possible to just replace the sheathing. He gave me his estimate within minutes of our conversation and, needless to say, without having examined the site. I got two other estimates: one electrician agreed that everything needed to be replaced, but another said I could just replace the service cable. So I guess there are different approaches to the problem and Certified did not represent a totally unreasonable solution. However, I was put off because they didn't even bother to come out and examine the situation. *** *** In response to Certified comments: *my panel is not 30-50 years old, as the respondent below assumes. He would have known that if he came and checked it out. *I did not request a quote over the phone; on the contrary, I asked for a site visit. *I was never asked to send photographs, which I would have been happy to do. These dishonest answers to sloppy, unprofessional business practices tells the whole story.

The breakdown of the outer sheathing of Service Entrance Cable (SEC) is due to UV radiation caused by exposure to the sun. It happens over a period of decades, typically 30-50 years. We know from experience that if an electrical service is 30-50 years old it needs to be updated and replacing one component of the service (i.e. the SEC) is inappropriate. We provided a competitive quote over the phone which is what the subscriber requested. There was no need to make a site visit to determine what was already known. Frequently we request that digital photos be sent to clear up any misunderstandings in the scope of work. We offered this as an option to the subscriber who declined saying she was obtaining multiple bids and if we wished to be considered for the job a site visit was mandatory. We politely declined Our profile on AL indicates that we provide free phone quotes. We try to make this clear on AL, on our own website and when people call. We think that giving a poor review on AL because you disagree with one of our policies is unfair.

The electrician arrived on time and was very friendly and professional. I had provided a description of the work ahead of time with the scheduler so he knew the general outline of what was to be done. We looked at the rooms together and discussed options for mounting the fan and lights. He explained that he would need to inspect the attic access and that might impact the type of mount used. Once he had all the necessary information, he reviewed what was possible and once I had made the few decisions that were necessary, he got to work. The work was completed without incident and I was very happy with the outcome. The electrician also performed a minor fix on a light/fan switch in a bathroom -- something that I probably could have fixed on my own, but, he was there and I'm paranoid about electrical-related do-it-yourself projects. I had a "Big Deal" for two hours of service for $125 and it was also explained that any time over that 2 hours would be charged at their regular rates (I think, this was a while ago). The work took a little over three hours to complete and all told with parts and the additional labor, I was still quite pleased with the final cost. Because of the "Big Deal" it took a little longer to hear back from the company to schedule the work than I would have liked, but, I understand why that was the case. I would definitely use this company again and, if I have any say about it, will request the same electrician.

I bought the Angie's List Big Deal from CET: $399 for a set of four recessed lights + dimmer switch. I bought two coupons (8 lights total) and had 4 recessed lights installed in two separate upstairs bedrooms. The CET Technician, David Petry, gave me a call about 15 minutes before he arrived at my home. He was friendly, courteous, professional and efficient in completing his work. He was very considerate with regard to keeping the upstairs bedrooms neat & clean while he performed his work. He even vacuumed the bedrooms once he was complete. The new light installation has really brightened up both of the bedrooms and my family really likes them. This was an A+ experience and I would highly recommend CET - and especially Dave Petry - for your electrician needs.

When CET came in they gave us alternatives and we are very happy with their results. They were very attentive and professional to the work, reminding us of appointments by email and snail mail. We will do definitely use them again.
Description of Work: As part of our kitchen renovation, we needed new lighting fixtures, but since we had never done it before we were clueless. We first used another company for our work on the kitchen lighting, but they were not as familiar with lighting. We ended up places in our kitchen where the lighting was too focused and other areas where more lighting was needed. CET was very helpful in recommendations for the types of lighting fixtures and the placing of their fixtures. We had used another electrician for a number of years, but they went out of business and we were at a loss for who to use especially for something so visible. They made very good suggestions and their work was excellent. They were able to do the work in one day. We would definitely use them again. We ended up with five recessed lighting fixtures and are having them come back to install a dimmer. We are happy with the service. Rob was very polite and knowledgeable, and he and I talked about what we were trying to do and how to get there. He did the job as discussed, the price came in lower than expected, and he was able to avoid having to put a blank plate in the ceiling, which made us happy.

Rob called and told us exactly when to expect him. He walked us through what to expect. In each room he asked what we wanted then designed a layout and asked us if we approved before he began the electrical work. He was great at minimizing the amount of drywall repair we will have to do. He helped us think through how much light we needed and where to place everything. He finished earlier than the scheduler anticipated and the cost was lower for labor than the estimate. Overall, great work and we really liked Rob and would request him again if we get additional work done.

Another good experience with the folks at CET. We had an 8a-12p window for the technician to arrive to do the work. There was a brief start-and-stop at the beginning, as John called up to say he was minutes away and would see us soon. Mere minutes after that, he called back (very apologetically) to tell us that he was just pulled off of his intended route for an emergency job elsewhere. He assured me he'd call when he left the other job, and apologized again for the false alarm. A couple of hours later, we got the call as promised that he was once again on his way. I was unable to remain there to meet him...but my wife stepped in to cover. All in all, he still managed to arrive before 12p, which was part of the original window...so the false alarm became a non-issue in the end. John installed the bathroom outlet, the hall fixture, and the new dimmer switch. We also had planned to run a second junction box in the bathroom, so that we could have 2 sconces in there, but he pointed out that the way things were wired behind that bathroom wall...this was going to either be a no-go...or...we would have to sign up for some much more invasive procedures to fulfill our request. We decided not to tear up any more walls...and John was patient (and busy with the other projects) while we ran out to acquire a single light bar instead. (We ultimately didn't go with that either, but that's another story...) The long and short of it is that John and CET did the bulk of the intended work well, and fully explained the challenges of the rest of our plan...so that we could decide whether or not to move forward with that piece of it. All aspects of the visit were handled with professionalism. Good info, and good job. We'll continue to use this company's services moving forward...

Everything went very smoothly and quickly. A little bit of dust/drywall debris was left on/in the sink, but not a big deal.
Description of Work: I needed to have a light fixture replaced in our powder room. I though the drywall needed to be cut to get the old fixture off and the new one installed. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the drywall did not have to be cut (and, therefore, I did not have to have a painter come to fix the drywall and repaint), and the light replacement was a simple one.

Thanks for the nice review. We always let our clients know that it is possible/likely that drywall will need to be cut in order to perform certain installations. We do not perform patching and painting so we do not want this to be a surprise. Our highly experienced techs can sometimes perform installations without cutiing walls and/or ceilings eliminating the need for repairs. We cannot always count on this happening but it is very nice when it does happen. It is another benefit to using a licensed contractor experienced with work in existing homes. We look forward to your next project !

Replaced bathroom ventilation fan with a larger fan. Did a good job and I would use them again.

Thanks for the nice review. This is a very common project for us. Replacing an ineffective and noisy builder's grade bath exhaust fan with a more powereful and quieter model. We hope you enjoy the peace & quiet of the new fan !

They did a lot of work and I highly recommend them. The estimate was professionally given over the phone by Gary, good at returning calls. He was very personable and helpful. He scheduled Rob who was superb at recommending lighting patterns that are both functional and attractive. The work was completed on time and very close to the estimated price. You have to understand that they cannot know in advance what might be behind your wall/ceilings (e.g., pipes, beams, etc) that require adjustments to the original plan and price. I am very happy with the result. The only reason for the C was punctuality. 1 hour 20 minutes late the first day seemed excessive, even with the pouring rain, but still being 45 minutes late the last day was annoying (I have to work too). He also billed 8 hours days except the last one even though he was never there at 8, but always left by 4, maybe travel time gets charged. But when I spoke up, they were very cooperative and set the final price to better reflect the estimate. I have worked with a lot of contractors and there are always problems. But these guys were amazing - no one has been as willing to try to make me happy as they did. And they did make me happy. And it looks and works great.
Description of Work: Installation of recessed ceiling lights in 4 rooms. Installation of pendant lights. Also had speaker wire run behind the walls and ceiling from one end of a large room to the other end.

Thank you for the very nice and detailed review. Your comments about puntuality are noted and even though we are at the mercy of DC area traffic like everyone else, we do our best to be on time. We do contact our clients when we are running late beacuse we realize that they have busy schedules. This was a fairly large lighting project that spanned 3 days and included alot of new fixtures. We appreciate the trust you put in us to perform the installation and hope that you enjoy your new lighting !

PERFECT - no less than that. I will definitely hire CET for my next electrical job, and will recommend them around to all my friends.
Description of Work: I had a transfer switch installed for my portable generator. John arrived on time on Monday morning, he started to work right away, and efficiently completed work in about 2 hours. He left the room where my electrical panel is neat, installed the plug outside as agreed, and stayed with me for a test of the switch that works perfectly. And finally he charged me a bit less than I was expecting based on the estimated I had been provided!

That's what we like to see - A Page of Happiness review and PERFECT as the comment. Thanks for the terrific review ! This is one of our "signature" projects. Providing a safe & effective connection for a Portable Generator. With power interruptions happening more frequently these days and for longer durations, many clients see the benefits to a home generator. Not everyone has the space or budget for a permanent stand-by generator and we have a very elegant solution for connecting a portable generator to a home's electrical system. In most cases we are able to provide an easy to use connection that allows our clients to power everything in their home up to the capacity of the generator. No separate panel requiring the decision to choose (or exclude) what can be powered during an outage. And all for a very low price compared to other methods !
