Jeff Smoot, TriState sales representative was very thorough when he did the estimate for this job. He was easily accessible for questions prior to the job start. I felt very comfortable going wtih this company. The workers were professional and diligent. They clearly knew what they were doing, they answered questions that we had and explained things to us as they went along. When they finished the job, we knew that everything had been checked out to make sure it worked and they went over everything with us. I would use them again in a heartbeat. Lorraine & Bob Blaydes

UPDATED, JUNE 30, 2015. In my last review last month I had expressed disappointment regarding promises not kept. The CEO of TriState, Shaun, did respond to my complaint and immediately corrected the situation. He offered one-year free maintenance agreement as was promised at the time of initial purchase in June 2014. Their office called soon after that to schedule the spring/summer maintenance. That was done today by technician Rick B. Rick carefully inspected and serviced the AC and the Wi-Fi thermostat. I was pleased with professionalism, care, and the patience that I observed. Thanks to TriState. MAY 2015. The installed appliance have worked well over the time since the installation ( about 11 months). Really happy with the efficiency and the quietness of Lennox XC25 air conditioner. The level of comfort is super with a reduction in electricity cost. The Wi-fi Lenox iComfort thermostat is really a very useful upgrade. I find the ability to remotely observe or change settings while we are away from home to be extremely valuable. One item that has been DISAPPOINTING with TriState Home services is that the sales representative had promised us in writing that the year after the first year, the maintenance agreement will be complimentary for one year. (There first year labor and service is covered by the manufacturer.) We have however received a bill for the same. We have written to their CEO Shaun Norwood about the situation. I will update and/or change my review depending on his response.

Good morning! I have not received the correspondence from you yet, so perhaps it is on the way. However I have already spoken to the Sales Representative that you worked with, and he explained that the installation of your new system took a little more time than originally anticipated, so he offered you a free Maintenance Agreement as a “Thank you” for your patience. Unfortunately, we failed to record this in your customer file, as it was not included in your original contract. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Your Maintenance Agreement is indeed free this year, as you indicated, and we look forward to serving you. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any additional concerns. My email is Shaun.Norwood@TriStateHomeServices.com, and my direct line is 240-215-3112. Best regards, -Shaun

Tri-State Home Services is awesome. I have been using them for a few years for Plumbing and Heating and Air-Conditioning services. They have always been punctual, professional and very reasonably priced. In this case they arrived on time as usual, quickly diagnosed and fixed the problem and were finished within 20 minutes. Since they didn't have to use any parts they only charged me $49 for visit. I had a $50 AngiesList coupon so the service call was free. Great Company to work with.

The service was great. Everything from start to finish was very great. I called them and made an appointment. They came out. They delivered. It was done and we are still using it. So, everything is fine. There were no extra charges to the $359 Big Deal. The reason I bought the Big Deal was because we had a town house that had a little house humidifier and we moved to this house and we did not have one. I saw the Deal. I grabbed it and they were fine.

They were wonderful. I highly recommend them. They're all very easy to talk to and are very accommodating. They're very personable. I had a crazy schedule and was working late and one of the workers went home and ate dinner and came back that night, when I would be home. That was really nice. He didn't have to do that and most companies don't do things like that anymore. They are by far probably the best I've worked with for this project.

For the past several years our kitchen sink has been clogging up every few months. At first it was once or twice a year but more recently every few months costing $3-400 each time. We called Tri-State Home Services in June when it blocked up again. At that juncture I specifically noted that: we had a continuing problem; told them that a sixty foot snake would be required (the previous time that they came out they had ignored my message and had to wait for two hours until they could get an extension for the snake; they tried at first to charge me for the wait); and asked spefically for them to bring a camera to put through the pipe to find out WHY it was blocking continually. The plumber came out the night before, to “consult” because he was going to “cure the problem once and for all”. He came out the next day and snaked the pipe for fourty feet (he didn’t bring extra length) and installed a clean out valve in the crawl space. He told us that the problem was that there wasn’t sufficient slope in the pipe and that it had been backing up but he had cleaned it out and in future there shouldn’t be a problem. He also stated that we should put bleach down the sink from time to time to clean it out. I pointed out that we had a septic tank and I would have thought that bleach could poison the field. He told us that it shouldn’t be a problem. He also informed us that he hadn’t brought a camera because they “didn’t make them small enough to go through our pipes”. Just one problem, the pipe was 3 inch diameter and they actually make them for pipe as small as 1 ½ inch. I pointed this out to him but he ignored my observation. Three months later the sink blocked up again! This time I got our contractor to come out and bought my own snake (at $720 per time I felt that it would be cheaper). When we got into the crawl space we found that he had installed a clean out valve but hadn’t rehung the pipe (we found the strapping and screws that had been there before) so that it was now bowed in the area where he had installed it and, of course, had blocked once again in that area. When we took the pipe out we found that ALL of the plumbers who had previously snaked the pipe had simply run a 1 ½ inch snake through 3 inches of accumulated kitchen debris, cleaning the center but leaving most of the pipe still full of debris which soon clogged up and would , what a surprise, require a return visit fairly soon. I also checked online the effect of bleach on septic tanks. One gallon of bleach will poison a thousand gallon septic tank! I tried to warn his head office of this erroneous advice but found that their email address didn’t work.
Description of Work: Consulted the day before and then installed a cleanout valve on outlet for kitchen sink and ran a snake for fourty feet to "cure" the blockage

Response from TriState Home Services
Thank you very much for your feedback. Based on your comments, it appears you may not have a clear understanding of the root causes of your kitchen sink problems. We apologize if our plumbing department did not sufficiently explain. The primary cause of your drain clog is the manner in which your home was originally piped. There is insufficient slope for drainage, and numerous turns/elbows preclude the use of larger drain cleaning equipment. Larger snaking equipment would likely damage your pipes. Our plumbers removed some of the strapping from the pipe in your crawl space in order to establish more slope to your septic system. And small amounts of bleach will not harm your septic system. Think in terms of the amount of bleach you would periodically use in your laundry. Very importantly, please keep in mind that your sink is what is referred to as a “clear water fixture.” Pouring grease down your drain will inevitably continue to cause clogging. Even using hot water to rinse grease down your drain will eventually cause clogs as the grease cools and coagulates while traveling down the pipe. If you have any questions or would like to discuss further, please call. We are more than happy to help in any way that we can.

I use them all the time. I like them. We are on a contract, and they come out twice a year. Most of the guys, they do seem to know what they're doing. We have a complicated system down stairs with a UV light, and a humidifier for the winter, I usually change the humidifier water panel once a year. The first time I did it, I didn't do it correctly, he turned it upside down because I put it in the wrong way. so that was helpful. Our air conditioner went down, and they came out quickly. It was getting pretty hot, we told them it was an emergency. They're very good.

I have had tri-state out several times. Initially, a contractor had not followed proper protocol. I was in a terrible bind this past winter. Tri-state Electricians and Plumbing were awsome. They helped me get permits I needed, point out and correct inspection issues that the contractor had disregarded. I have had terrific service in both these departments and will continue to use then. There are probably cheaper services out there, but the quality, care, and punctuality of this company will keep me coming back.

I purchased the coupon on Angie's list in January 2013 for a Honeywell humidifier with the intent of being more "green" than my existing AprilAire humidifier allowed - the promise on the coupon was that this new humidifier would use half as much water as my existing unit. Well, it lived up to that promise, but my family and I have been miserable since! Installation by the provider, Tri-State Home Services LLC in early 2013 went fine, but I noticed immediately that the humidity levels in my home were lower than required - evidenced by static electricity, a much colder feeling in the house even though the temperature was the same, etc. I formerly had had levels of ~40%, but now the humidity wouldn't go above 30%. I asked the provider about it, and was told that I should just pump up the humidistat as high as possible, and let the house's moisture levels stabilize. By this time, the winter was about done, and to tell the truth, I forgot about it. On to the winter of 2013-2014, and I am experiencing the same issues. Again, the provider says to pump up the humidity levels, and I do so, but with no discernible difference. Those in the DC area will recall that the 2013-2014 was miserable, especially when it comes to humidity levels. My family and I were suffered through a constant dry feeling, dry skin, and the constant static electricity shocks. I've used Harvey Hottel for years to service my HVAC system. I asked the technician about the humidifier during a recent service call, and he said the unit is not sized properly for my home; he said, "No wonder your family has been miserable, there's no way the unit will ever put the required amount of humidity in the air!" I'm all for mutually beneficial and agreeable resolutions in situations like this. It took two calls to Tri-State to get a phone call back (7/25 and 7/29); when I did get a call back from Matt at Tri-State on July 29, 2014, and relayed the story above, I was told I would get a call back from Rich, who apparently has is the owner or has influence in these situations? Anyway, still waiting for that call back as of this writing (8/7/2014). Matt was patient on the phone with me, but did let me know that Tri-State no longer uses the Honeywell units they installed at my home, which make me think that there's reasons like mine for this - why stop installing this unit if all is A-OK? My contention is this: If the unity was not properly sized for my home, Tri-State should have said so before it was installed. If they learned after installation that the units are sub-par (evidenced by discontinuing installations of this Honeywell model), Tri-State should "Tri-to-work-it-out." Not sure what they would have done, as I purchased a coupon through Angie's List, but I would still have my perfectly-functioning AprilAire, and a happy and properly-humidified family. It would seem that Tri-State does not want to discuss the matter further with me, which is why I am giving a poor rating for this provider. I am now looking at the prospect of a $750+ expenditure to have a new and proper humidifier installed, to say nothing of the $250 I spent already on Angie's list. My feeling is that a provider rated as an "A" on Angie's List should be doing more for it's customers.

They were great. First I intended to replaced only the AC because the old system was losing freon. But when I considered the range of options Tri-State presented - new AC, new overall system, different brands, different levels of efficiency, different costs, different warranties, etc. - I decided it made more sense to replace the whole system with a new, more efficient one. There was only one hiccup - the new system included a new thermostat and required replacing the old one, but the installers were unaware of that and started to leave the old thermostat. I told them the salesman had said I would need a new thermostat and the new system included it, and when they checked that turned out to be the case; another man arrived later the same day to replace the old thermostat with the new one. That was all handled quickly, professionally, smoothly.

Some of the work was initially installed incorrectly. When the supervisor came out, I could tell that he was mortified and immediately swung in to action to get things rectified. In a day when many refuse to be accountable for their work, I was incredibly impressed with the humility and honesty with which the company worked to solve the problem. It was such a contrast to several other contractors. Thus, I hired them to perform additional work for us personally, including re-piping our house (the walls were already torn open) and installing a new hot water heater.

Dale Waite, their sales manager, came to our house twice to review our old system and recommend proper replacement. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. Despite Costco's promotion on LENNOX systems, Tri-State's bid was more competitive. Tri-State also offered better warranties. The installation was managed by crew manager, Matthew, who is friendly, responsive, and available to answer questions. The water heater was replaced and installed by technician, Frank. The huge AC unit (model XC25) and the furnace was installed by another Dale and his assistant. All the work seemed done very carefully and well. The high-efficiency XC25 along with iComfort WiFi thermostat seems to be working great. XC25's compressor is remarkably quiet. With both variable speed compressor and variable-speed indoor blower, we can have substantially better comfort., hopefully at a lower cost The energy cost is too early to judge as the installation was completed just two weeks ago. We are very pleased with Tri-State's work, including good associated duct work. The high level of each individuals' knowledge, professionalism, and responsiveness was remarkable. (My own engineering/HVAC background gave me an opportunity to judge a real good piece of work.) It is good also to note that all that was done with a friendly and positive demeanor. Tri-state is expected to do one more item to complete the work for us which we anticipate they will do it soon. I will update my comments related to Tri-State service and the HAC system and water heater performance as and when appropriate.
