Our furnace finally bit the dust after 25 years of faithful service. I had TriState do several small repairs and maintenance on it over the years, and they always did a good job. So, when the last service rep told me it was finally beyond repair, we consulted with Comfort Specialist, Darren, who isn't just a salesman, but previously installed and repaired HVAC systems. He took lots of measurements, inspected the old unit and the runs to the outside and upstairs. He took his time making calculations and offered us several options on a new system. TriState uses Daikin furnaces, which are rated in the top 5 furnaces for dependability and efficiency. The price, I thought, compared to my two other neighbors, who also recently purchased new systems, was even lower than I thought it going to be. In fact, my neighbors paid more (by thousands) and have a smaller square footage footprint than my house. We've had the unit now for over a month, and so far, it's great. It is a one-zone system, yet the upstairs will only vary by one or two degrees. This is much better than the old unit. We're hoping this small variance in temperature will also apply when the AC is on in the summer. The installers were very professional, arrived on time and completed the work in a timely manner. I would definitely use TriState again, and will rely on them whenever I need service.

The plumbing cost $800. A across the board. Absolutely would use them again. He cleaned up after himself very nicely.
Description of Work: I use TriState for electrical and plumbing. They are still doing the electrical. It's a 2-step process. They did the first part back in May and the next part will be in a few weeks. They did the plumbing in May also. They did plumbing for a basement sink.

Overall, very well, although it took two additional visits to first troubleshoot and then adjust the original installation of the new pump. Originally the new pump was installed with a temperature-controlled on/off switch but it turned out that that was not workable for the configuration of my plumbing. Therefore, a programmable timer had to be installed instead. This was very straightforward, simply a matter of swapping out the temperature module wired to the pump with a timer module and replacing the thermal check valve under the farthest sink left over from the non-working pump with a new one.

Had same day service for heating issues we were having. Was able to get a new system installed within a week (our other system had a cracked heat exchanger & found out at 17 years old & having the old R22 refrigerant, it was time to replace). Friendly, professional, great customer service, loved that they had several different finance options for me and gave me several options to choose from in the price range I was looking for, so I didn't have to worry about getting something I couldn't afford. Highly recommend calling them for service!

Paul arrived on time and was very friendly and professional in his mannerism. Unfortunately, he either did a lousy job at diagnosing my problem, or he intentionally tried to pull a fast one on me. Let me explain what happened. I started off making suggestions that my freon is probably low or something. In hindsight that was a bad idea. He checked the furnace first and told me my filter was very dirty. It was dirty, and I had a spare and we replaced it right then. After that, he went outside to check the unit, coolant levels, etc. He said the unit's levels were okay and would look further at the inside unit, but I noticed he was checking the wrong unit and corrected him (he checked my attic unit not my main floor unit). He acted innocent "oh I thought that was weird..." and checked the other unit. When he checked that unit, he said the freon level was zero and the line had no pressure. So, he began to sell me on things. ****, he even looked at my water heater "oh, that doesn't look good, you should replace that, we do plumbing too" and yet the water heater is totally fine. He said he could do a leak test for $400-500, but he claimed 90% of the time the leaks are at the coils "due to rust." We went inside and he showed me my coils, which were a bit rusty. Because this is an R22 unit, he said replacing the coils and refilling the freon would be about $4000, and I'm probably better off getting a new system since R22 is not supported anymore. I contemplated this and decided I would let their sales rep call me to talk business. However, my intentions were really to get a second opinion and look up this rusty coil business. So after he left and I paid the reasonable diagnostic fee of $109, I researched rusty coils as causes for freon leaks. Emphatically, that is NEVER the cause of a leak and rusty coils is very normal due to condensation around the coil. At that point I called another company—Eric Smock—and had them come out for another opinion. The next part is the best... Eric Smock's technician Dan came out and checked the inside unit and found everything to be completely normal. He checked the outside unit and the freon levels and....tada, the levels were totally fine. But the unit was not kicking on....he found the disconnect breaker unplugged and hidden inside of my unit! He plugged it back in and everything was fine. I don't know if TriState intentionally tried to trick me into a new system by playing on my early assumptions that there must be a leak in the line—my total foot in mouth situation—or if they are incompetent and can't read their gauges correctly. But, my filter was dirty, I'll give them that...that was obviously the only thing wrong, which was suppressing my cool air from coming out fast enough. Don't use TriState! Give Eric Smock a call, they are great.

It was working for awhile and just the other day we realized it wasn't working. There is a red light which indicates some kind of fault. There was no charge because it was part of the installation to make it work. When we first started using them I would of gave them an "A". Over the years they have kind of gone down hill. It's been pretty good except my experience with the humidity control.

Brilliantly!! Salesman arrived on time and was polite and knowledgeable. Technicians were also punctual and professional, and left the area cleaner than they found it. Tristate also handled all the paperwork, including permitting and filing for a rebate with the electrical provider. You can find cheaper out there, but I chose Tristate because I wanted to establish a relationship with trusted professionals. I will call upon them in the future, and I am comfortable recommending them.

The job went very well. The repair person (Brian Jr.) was friendly, efficient, and professional. The replacement was a straightforward task that he completed quickly and neatly. He did not mind that I watched him (I have a great curiosity about how things work), he explained why expansion tanks are used and how they fail, and he answered all of my questions. Based on some very limited online price research I had done for expansion tanks, I felt perhaps TriState’s cost for the tank itself seemed on the high side, but I had no strong basis to consider it completely unreasonable. At the same time, although I did not choose TriState for this reason, I was able to save $50 on the job with a coupon from Angie’s List.

When our AC went out & their technician RJ came out & found out that our system was using the old freon & we also were shown that our heat exchanger was cracked on our 16 year old system & knowing it was a danger & we would have not heat - we decided it was time to replace! Using the technicians advice we called TriState to talk to their sales department & we were able to get someone out the very next day & they even did a early evening appointment, knowing that our work is important too! Their sales guy was very patient and asked us a lot of questions on what we were looking for, what type of issues we wanted to resolve with a new system, and what kind of price we wanted to stay in for financing. We loved that he took the time to discuss everything with us, the pros and cons of the cheaper and the higher priced units and why would work better than the other. We ended up going with Lennox system because of the reviews online and the high recommendation from not just their technician that came out, but their sales department as well. We were able to get the system installed less than a week after the initial service call. The install guys Randy and Preston were very kind and professional. Even though we told them it wasn't necessary for them to put down drop cloths and wear shoes booties, they insisted. The install was done professionally, passed inspection with flying colors and now 3 months later, is still running as well as as they day they put it in. I loved that they took the time to make sure we knew how to use our new super modern Lennox thermostat and handed us all the owners manuals and reminded us to register our equipment for the extended warranty. I also loved they were able to add a whole house humidifier to our new unit, to not have dry air anymore, especially during the winter is wonderful! If you're looking for a company that responds fast, does good quality work, you need to look no further than contacting TriState Home Services!

Last night one of their Comfort Specialists (a/k/a salesperson) came out to take a look at our failing system and talk to us about how to handle it. He was so friendly, and very knowledgeable about the available systems that would work in an attic. He described in detail the various options we have, making a recommendation on one that should suit our needs yet not break the bank. I appreciated his sensitivity to the cost factor. Our past experiences with TriState have been excellent, and if we decide to go ahead and get a new furnace now, I am sure they will do another first-rate job.
Description of Work: We need a new gas furnace in our attic (our home has two-zone heating and cooling). Our current system is original to the house, now 23 years old, and beginning to show its age. TriState has done work for us in the past, and we have been thoroughly impressed with the quality of people and work they have provided.

Called Tri State to check out our A/C unit when the central air failed last August. After replacing a burned out capacitor and refilling the Freon, the leak identified by the technician (Anders) turned out to be larger than hoped, and the new refrigerant all dissipated within 3 days. Ultimately, worked with Darren Viands at Tri State to replace the entire HVAC system (which was at the end of it's useful life anyway). To his credit, he answered all my large and small questions, making certain I was well-informed enough to be comfortable with the investment in my chosen equipment. (I had not heard of Daikin previously.) The install went smoothly and was completed in one day, as promised. The crew - Sonny, Dale and Chad - were on time, worked quietly and continuously, and were helpful in answering any lingering questions. I also appreciated that they did not leave a mess. The furnace installation passed the city gas inspection with flying colors. There was a slight issue with a loose piece of metal that interfered with the thermostat battery, which was discovered a few days later, but the entire thermostat was replaced promptly following a phone call to the service manager, Laura. A portion of the cost of the original service call, minus materials, was credited towards the new equipment purchase, which was very decent and helpful. The A/C unit has been running quietly in the background for a month; seamlessly switched over to heat this week with no issues. All in all, I'm very pleased with the work Tri State did and the professional manner of everyone we had contact with. Time will tell if the product itself is as good as the installation.

I called a few companies in the area when beginning research on a GeoThermal Heat Pump. We have used TriState many times over the years, and this experience was no different. Making the switch from a traditional gas furnace/Electric HVAC is no small job, but Bert Miskell walked us through every step of the process, answering all our questions, without trying to "sell" us on his product the way another company did. We chose TriState because we were confident in their experience with previous installations, and because of the thoughtful way our questions and concerns were answered. We are currently awaiting installation, but every step thus far (determining well location, removal of an old, nonfunctioning system, Miss Utility visits) have proceeded exactly as Bert outlined, and he remains accessible and promptly returns phone calls and emails. We are excited to be able to utilize the Federal Tax credits that expire this year, reducing our overall cost by nearly half, and putting expenses very close to a traditional gas system. The costs between all the companies we spoke with were very comparable.

Jeff Smoot came to my home from TriState. He is very professional, honest and helpful. He went out of his way (above and beyond) to answer questions. He even got out his thermal camera to help answer questions. Tristate's bid was the best price compared to the 2 other local bids. Tristate set up portable air conditioners to temporarily use until the new air conditioner was installed! They started with the work right away. Jeff Smoot and Raymond Mills saw we had a broken baffle in the duct work area and fixed it with no extra charge. This has made it so much cooler in the summer on the 2 upper levels of our townhouse! The new Lennox air conditioner is quiet and works great!

I've used TriState before and was always please with the price and professionalism. I called TriState to get a waterpump repaired that was installed with a Whole-House Humidifier in 2013. The Tech came, replaced the pump in no time and everything seemed well. When I was presented the bill I was told there is a $129 charge to come out. Now, I've had my fair share of traits in my house and I'm well aware that there is a charge to come out and diagnose, but I have never been charged that much. The Tech seemed a bit embarrassed about it. I did not give him a hard time, since it's not his fault. Needless to say I don't think I will be using TriState again, I find this charge excessive. I was not charge that much in the past by TriState or was made aware on the phone when I schedule the appointment.

Response from TriState Home Services
Thank you for your feedback regarding TriState’s diagnostic charge for your service appointment. We understand that the charge can seem a bit pricey depending on the nature of the service call, so hopefully some explanation will be helpful. Since the company’s founding, TriState has charged a flat rate for the diagnosis of any problem related to our customers’ heating and cooling system. The diagnosis includes our technician’s trip to your home, and all time and materials required to diagnose the problem with your system. There are times when the diagnosis is straight forward, and there are other situations in which the diagnosis requires several hours of inspection and analysis. Regardless of TriState’s investment in time and materials, the cost of the diagnosis is always the same. Some contractors will charge a small “trip charge” for the technician to show up, and then variable rates based on the first half hour, and every 15 minutes thereafter. We believe that guaranteeing the cost of the diagnosis up front is a more transparent and trustworthy approach. We have reviewed your service history, and it appears that you were never charged for a diagnosis due to the nature of our prior visits to your home. On one occasion, we installed a new humidifier through an Angie’s List Big Deal. We also performed a Spring Maintenance, and checked your humidifier for proper operation under your warranty. The appointment to which you are referring was the first time we needed to diagnose a problem with your HVAC system. All of that being said, if we did not properly communicate to you that there would be a charge for diagnosing the problem with your HVAC system, we think it is only fair that we refund the amount charged for the diagnosis. After all, the whole point of a flat diagnosis charge is to ensure that our customers know exactly what to expect. We will mail a refund check to the service address we have on file for you. Thanks again for your feedback! Please give us a call if you ever need a hand with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry…just about anything in your home. -Shaun

Not pleased with Tri-State. Here's why: Appointment #1 - FREE HVAC ESTIMATE 9/11/15 with Jeff Jeff did an estimate for a new oil furnace and central air installation. Three options were provided (good/better/best) in writing on 9/14/15. While at my house, he expressed concern with the safety and functionality of my (50+ year old) oil furnace. He suggested that if I decided not to have the work done that at a minimum, I should have their oil furnace technician take a look at it. I called Tri State to make an appointment to have their oil furnace technician inspect the system. Overall experience= great. Appointment #2 - OIL FURNACE INSPECTION 9/24/15 with Donald Donald arrived on time and was very professional and courteous. He inspected the oil furnace and didn't notice any issues. Since he was there, he suggested having the oil furnace cleaned, given its age. I just bought the house a year ago and know that hadn't been done so I agreed to proceed. About 1/2 way through the cleaning Donald discovered a hole in the heat exchanger. He said I'd have to replace the furnace and that's where we left off. I wasn't charged for the cleaning which I really appreciated. Overall experience= excellent. THE DOWNRIGHT UGLY as of 10/3/15: From there, things went downhill. The oil furnace replacement is covered under my home warranty so I followed up with Tri State on 9/28/15; spoke with Jennifer in their office and sent her the work order/claim information with the authorization phone number they'd have to call to provide all the estimate details. It's now 10/3/15 (almost a week later) and I still haven't received an estimate in writing for just the oil furnace replacement. Jeff had sent me a written estimate on 9/14/15 but this was for a new furnace AND central air installation and didn't have a cost breakdown which the insurance company needs. It's also worth mentioning that I got a text on 10/1/15 stating that the replacement would be just under $6k but nothing since. Unprofessional and not acceptable. IN CLOSING: I think this could have been a wonderful experience but someone dropped the ball here and no one seemed to be making an effort to follow through in a reasonable timeframe. It should not take a week to draw up an estimate with the cost breakdown and provide this to the insurance company. These nights are getting chiliy (in the 40's) and I have no heat in my house! I'll be giving my business to a company that truly cares about their customers.
