I did not have the work done by Hammerhead due to scheduling conflicts. I needed the work to be completed as soon as possible due to the dire condition of my ceiling. However, I would trust Hammerhead to provide quality work with my home. My experience with this company has only been positive. I came to know this company through another contractor, who could not take on this project; however recommended Hammerhead's work. I was able to quickly obtain an appointment with Bill. Bill is exceptional and knows his craft. Despite the fact, I had a million questions, he was always patient and professional. Barbara, who works the office, is a true professional too. During the summer, it seems every contractor is busy and takes a while to get back to you. Hammerhead, despite being busy, provided quick responses to every need or question I had. It was a pleasure working with this company and I would use them in the future.
Description of Work: Living room ceiling was in desperate need of being replaced. The plaster ceiling was sagging and had developed large cracks and was showing signs of falling. I wanted the ceiling replaced, 6 recessed lights installed, crown molding installed, painting of ceiling and molding, the plumbing (upstairs bathroom) checked and an access panel installed in bathroom for accessibility to pipes in tub.

Hammerhead did a fantastic job on our project. They were very easy to work with through out the process even when we needed to change the plans or add additional work. They got the job done ahead of schedule and all of the work crew was very polite and accommodating while on site. I have done multiple house renovations and Hammerhead has been the best I have dealt with, we will be using them to do work on our new house as well. Couldn't have asked for a better team!

The Hammerhead team was great to work with from start to finish. It is clear that they all work well together as well. I had many questions and they always responded to them very quickly. I am very happy with my kitchen cabinet installation. Bill came to my house to measure, and he also offered some good suggestions. Jack and Jim got the job done quickly, without sacrificing quality. George did the plumbing and finishing touches which brought it all together. Barbara was wonderful throughout the entire process.
Description of Work: Hammerhead Construction installed my kitchen cabinets and also built an island using several cabinets.

I felt that the project went well. This was the first time I had contracted for a renovation and I found it very easy to work with Hammerhead. The cabinets are beautifully installed. There were some unexpected issues which were corrected quickly. Hammerhead's sub-contractors (electrical, plumbing, lead containment and removal) were on the whole professional and very skilled. Their office is easy to reach, front office staff very responsive, attentive and great to talk to, frankly.
Description of Work: Did kitchen renovation and cabinet installation through Home Depot. Demolished wall, and soffit, electrical, relocated sink drain and supplly lines, installed appliances and floor, drywall work and patching, moved doors, installed cabinets, laminate countertop, sink, lead paint demo/removal.

Hammerhead Construction, Inc. were very good. They did a very good job. They put in all the cabinets and electrical work in the kitchen. It only took them two days to do everything. They worked through Home Depot, so we negotiated the price with Home Depot. At the time, the price was reasonable. They were very, very quick. They cleaned up everything when they left. They were a very nice bunch of guys. They came in and it was done much quicker than I accepted.
Description of Work: They remodeled our kitchen for us. They were subcontractors with Home Depot.

Hammerhead subcontracted for Granite Outlet in Timonium. Granite Outlet was useless. The designer/sales person talked a good game and we signed. The designer ended up botching the design, cabinet order and measurements. She was fired. So was their first contractor. Thank God halfway through our project Granite Outlet hired Hammerhead. Jack and the crew at Hammerhead was experienced, and corrected any problems on the go. They did an excellent job and we are very pleased. We will now hire Hammerhead directly.
Description of Work: Total gut and remodel to the kitchen and main bathroom. Updated the dining room - took off three layers of wall paper, installed crown moulding, letterbox wainscotting, electrical update and painting. Knocked out wall between kitchen and dining room. Rerouted ducts and vents. Updated two other bathrooms. Crown moulding was installed in the living room and foyer. Also, little extras here and there.

We are absolutely thrilled with all of the work Hammerhead did for us. They worked with us in our design of the new kitchen, including the style and color selection of the new cabinets and the cabinet trim. When we chose the floor tile and granite they helped us in coordinating the look and our color selections. We had Hammerhead stay at our beach house (which is 3 hours away from our regular home) during the kitchen remodel and retiling of the bathroom floors. We were not present during this construction. When they were ready to grout the tile floors, they called us because they felt the color grout we had picked was too dark. They said we only had 1 shot at getting it right and asked us to trust them and let them pick a grout color more appropriate to the tile. We agreed and they were right! The new floors are beautiful and the grout we had chosen would not have looked right. In addition, we were informed ahead of time that the mirrors in the bathrooms were glued to the walls and that they may break when they tried to remove them in order to get the vanities out. We knew this but were amazed to find the mirrors still in place when we saw the bathrooms. It turned out they decided to shave the bottoms of the vanities instead and we cannot tell the difference in the vanity heights it is so minor. They saved us having to buy new bathroom mirrors! While the remodel was going on, Hammerhead called us every day and let us know how things were going. When we got to the beach house to see everything after it was completed, I was amazed at how clean, neat, and free of dust everything was. They even made all of the beds!! They were completely trustworthy and that is important to us. We had the same great experience with Hammerhead at our home where the existing shower was replaced. They made suggestions for laying the wall tiles and the shower turned out incredible. It makes us feel like we are in a spa! We are planning on using them again for our next project.
Description of Work: We had a total kitchen remodel done at our beach house, including cabinets, tile floor, granite countertops, tile backsplash. The remodel included a bar area that is not part of the counters. As part of the remodel, they disconnected and reconnected the plumbing and appliances and repaired drywall. They installed our new over the stove microwave and installed the new sink faucet and a new garbage disposal. They installed an additional electrical outlet at the bar and under the cabinets lights. We also had them remove existing vinyl floors in two bathrooms at this house and install tile floors and marble threshholds. This required them to remove existing vanities and toilets and put them back after the floors were finished. In addition to this beach house construction, we had a shower gutted in our home (not the beach house) and had them tile the entire shower area. This work included disconnecting and reconnecting the shower plumbing and shower drain and changing the location of the drain. They also did some drywall repair in this bathroom.

We were new to using a contractor for anything in our house as we are usually do it our self types. Hammerhead was easy to use and they made the entire experience very easy and the work was done very quickly.
Description of Work: We utilized Hammerhead to remodel our kitchen, after purchasing the items from a big box store. They did a great job of demo and installation. The only issue we had was with an electrician; however he is no longer employed at this company and the head electrician was able to fix the issues in a respectable amount of time. The office crew is great and timely in returning calls and answering our questions. We will probably utilize them again to redo our bathroom in the future.

Awesome job, but according to countertop installers the cabinets were not leveled from one side of stove to the other side, but hammerhead came the next day and redid their work. Then once countertop was in they came back and put the sink and garbage disposal in. Excellent results. Thy are very trustworthy, professional, and willing to work around your schedule!

My response to the company as of 6/10/2010: Issue #1-Asbestos floor replacement. He told me that he couldn't pull the floor up since there was asbestos there. I do not know asbestos from a piece of tile. He showed me and I took his word for it. They left it there and laid the floor on top of it making it higher. I was not happy with that, but did not say a whole lot about it as it would cost additional money. All of the houses were built around the same time and many neighbors have also had kitchen remodels with no asbestos. Nothing was done in this house since 1950. I cannot dispute that one way or the other since I have no proof. Issue #2-laying the tile floor diaganolly. I called other contractors and they informed me it would not cost anymore to have it lay diaganolly. I do not feel they gave me any additional labor service since it was not more work. Issue #3-sink plumbing issue. My water wouldn't go down once they finished. I bought two containers of Drain-o and put it down the sink as they suggested. They told me I should have a new pipe put in and that was my option so I took their recommendations and had it replaced. It was not stopped up when they started and they want me to pay more to have it fixed. They claim that they gave me $125 of free service for that which is untrue. They eventually did something to the drain and should have done that in the first place, taking 15 minutes. It was not a major thing that should have been taken care of with the installation. The 4th Issue-stove not fitting properly. I bought my appliances through Direct Buy and in all fairness to Hammerhead, I believe that Direct Buy should have some responsibility toward the stove not fitting since they were the ones that helped me select the appliances. I am told by another contractor that the problem is my stove was not designed to fit into a custom space. The stove should not have had a finished side. It is finished on all sides and does not fit the width. I didn't know this and don't believe I should be expected to know this. Since Hammerhead was supposed to be coordinating with them, I do not know what the miscommunication was. I don't give them 100% fault. Direct Buy definitely shares responsibility. He also made a comment in his last statement that we were discussing the contract and I took the initiative to take it. I asked if there was anything about it that I needed to know. I am not a kitchen specialist and wanted to be sure that these issues would not come up. After our final discussion, after the fact, he claimed that he did patching of the walls. They knocked holes in the wall after putting in a dust barrier. He didn't do any free services for the walls. He also had strange behavior with his large, iron plumber's wrench hitting against his hand while over me which is my observation and made me uncomfortable. They saved me absolutely nothing and broke a couple of things. They moved a freezer for free which is the only item.
Description of Work: I contacted them to remodel my kitchen. The project went well until they finished the work and left. The sink was plugged and I was told I should simply buy some Drain-O to solve the problem and I did. This was a temporary fix, but it started to stop up again. I contacted hammer head and they said I might have a problem with the main drain. I told them I've never had a plumbing issue previous to my remodel. They said they would have to charge me to fix the sink. This was unacceptable. I paid for the remodel of my complete kitchen and am not satisfied with the outcome. I was told they cannot offer work for free. At this point, I feel they did not complete the work I paid for. The only other option they gave me is to use more drain cleaner. This is obviously not going to work permanently and I don't want to continue possibly damaging my piping. He is not offering any other solution and I now feel stuck.

Response from Hammerhead Construction, Inc.
Hammerhead was contracted by this member to do a kitchen remodel job. We submitted a line item contract listing all work to be performed. Through out the whole process of the remodeling work we discovered some unforeseen issues. Issue #1 – An asbestos tile floor was found in the kitchen while removing the old floor. We resolved this issue by putting underlayment over it prior to laying new tile down. We saved the customer an average of $1500.00 for an asbestos abatement company to remove it. This resulted in the floor being higher, so we had to provide & install 2 layers of oak thresholds of which we did not charge the customer – cost to Hammerhead – $120.00 in material. Issue #2 – On the day of the tile floor installation, she stated that she would like to have her floor tile laid diagonally. We did this at the time not realizing that her contract with us stated “tile floor – laid square”. The result was an additional $300.000 in labor. Hammerhead did not charge the customer for this. Issue #3 – After completion of the job, she complained that her kitchen sink was draining slowly. We had replaced the drain from the sink to the floor of the basement, as per her contract. I informed her this and pointed out that it had to be the main drain of the house. I instructed her to try some Drano. After several harassing and abusive phone calls from the customer I went out and snaked and unclogged her main drain in the basement floor. I showed her that it had nothing to do with the plumbing work we had performed. Hammerhead did not charge the customer for the snaking which would have been at least $125.00 if she would have gotten a plumber. Issue #4 – She then showed us her stove and commented on how is wouldn’t push back all the way to the wall. We showed her that her existing gas line was too high for her new stove and that at the time that her contract was written she had not purchased the stove. We let her know that we would have had no way of knowing that the gas line would need to be lowered. We offered to have our plumber come out and lower the gas line, but she would have to pay him. She insisted that she already paid for that service. I went over the contract with her line by line, which clearly showed she had in fact not paid for any such thing. I also listed all of the free work we had already done for her. (Including all of the free patching we did to the walls in the kitchen and moving her refrigerator to the basement). I was still holding the snake and channel locks in my hand from snaking the drain at which time she accused me of having a weapon in my hand. That’s when my partner and I said “it’s time to go” and left her house. We have an impeccable reputation and feel that we go above and beyond for our customers. In our 10 years of business here in Baltimore we have had no complaints by our customers. At some point you have to draw the line as to how many free things you give a customer. Here is a recap of the items that we saved money for the customer: $1500.00 – saved on asbestos abatement $300.00 – free - tile installed diagonally – not squared $100.00 – free - kitchen patching $120.00 – free – oak transitions $100.00 – free – disassemble – carry to basement – reassemble refrigerator $125.00 – free – drain snaking TOTAL FREE - $745.00 SAVINGS - $1500.00 Please call me with any questions. Thanks, Jack Pollock Hammerhead Construction 410-686-6162

The experience was a disaster. They said it would take three weeks and it took three months. The person that I met with never came back to the site again. No one ever worked a full day. They left my key to my house taped to the inside of my mailbox. I was very angry about that. They made choices that were unacceptable instead of asking me what I wanted. They wanted me to pay to fix things.

Response from Hammerhead Construction, Inc.
I am writing this letter in response to a report posted on Angie's List from this client. I was not aware of any issue with this customer until I read the report on Angie's List. I have researched this job to understand the issues posted. My initial interpretation of the customers report showed contradictions in the complaint. The customer was never present during the job, so for her to state that we never worked a full day is unfounded. We left her key taped to the inside of the mailbox, because she wasn’t there to give the key to. According to our records numerous calls were made to the customer concerning issues that came up during her job. Since she was not on the job and unavailable by phone, decisions were made with our best judgment to make the job move along smoothly. The person that originally went out on her job was there to take measurements and pictures. It is not in his scope of work to be on the job after the measurements are taken. The crews that were sent to do her work are professionals and have thousands of hours of experience in bathroom remodeling. The issue of the length of time that the job took was not a factor that we could change. We are a subcontractor for a major chain (box store) and any ordering of parts is done solely through them. Items were not on the job and were sent incorrectly. This is unfortunately an issue that does occur. Because we are a subcontractor, we do not get paid until the job is completed in full. In this customers case we had to pay the bathroom installation crew, flooring installer and plumber before we were ever paid by the chain store. We were frustrated with the time the job took as well. One interesting thing about this whole issue is that we never heard about any of these complaints from the customer directly. We do occasionally get calls from customers who have issues with their jobs and we do all we can to make them happy. We have a fabulous reputation and we work hard to maintain it. We do apologize for any inconvenience the client experienced during her job, but wish we would have been contacted directly about the issues and given a chance to set things right. I am therefore disputing the report she submitted and am asking for it to be removed. Please contact me directly with any questions or concerns. Thank you, Jack Pollock 410-686-6162 hammerheadconstructioninc@yahoo.com
