Kitchen and Bathroom remodeling. Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Drywall and Painting.
I called Nelson Laur to get an estimate and he stopped by right away and gave us an estimate which was acceptable. The work began when it was scheduled promptly at 8am. I was happy to see one of the workers was one who had worked on our bathroom renovation. Nelson and his crew worked all day long, very efficiently. The deck planks were set diagonally as we had discussed and turned out looking beautiful. The deck feels very stable now that it has been reinforced. Nelson and his crew did a great job both structurally and esthetically.
Description of Work: The upper deck planks were all removed and new planks were put down in a diagonal pattern. The deck structure and columns were reinforced. A ledge was installed around the railing (the railing was retained since it was fine) for both added support and convenience.

Nelson Laur listened carefully to everything I had to say and gave me a great estimate that reflected everything I had mentioned to him and also respected my tight budget. I felt like we "meshed" with respect to him understanding what I wanted and that gave me a lot of confidence to choose him out of the five estimates that I received. Nelson offered great suggestions for the tile patterns and the fixtures and paint colors that turned out fantastic and also kept me within my budget. Nelson and his crew covered everything with tarps to keep it clean. They worked very hard each day. For my project his crew included Jared and Andy who were very friendly and conscientiouscraftsmen. It was great to see them each day and watch my bathroom progress. They promptly arrived when they said they would arrive. They were accommodating in every way. They answered all of my myriad questions. I felt very confident and safe with them. The first day they gutted the bathroom. The next days were spent creating my new closet, doing drywall, plumbing, priming, painting and so forth each day. All of the tiles were beautifully laid out for the shower walls and for the floor. Stray electrical wires were properly capped off. I was offered choices for each step of the way including the crown molding shape, the size of the custom closet door, the tile patterns, the baseboards and so on which was very agreeable since I wanted to be involved. Nelson and his crew were very detail oriented. At the end I can say that they did outstanding work and the bathroom they crafted is beautiful.
Description of Work: Our 7 x 7 en-suite bathroom off the master bedroom was gutted and beautifully remodeled. The old tub was removed and a tiled shower was custom installed and the floor was tiled. A custom closet with a door was created where there had just been a half open shelf area. A custom mirror was created out of the old mirror with a new custom frame made. Custom glass framed shower doors were installed. All fixtures were matched. Crown molding was installed. A new exhaust fan was also installed with a timer.

This was a disappointing experience. After a good initial meeting where I found Nelson personable and impressive and I felt I had found a l local reliable handyman to simply replace an economical one-piece shower base, the job became a challenge for me. Nelson does little of the actual work and uses other workmen. I was impressed with the A ratings Nelson had received on Angies List, and so while i had a bad experience, perhaps I was unlucky. My big disappointment was in the time-management, guidance in design choices and communication for the overall project. After I accepted the initial proposal for simple floor replacement, Nelson suggested that replacing the shower floor piece would involve removing some of the lower wall tiles and would be just as well to replace entire walls... and so i fell into the classic temptation to go further than originally planned.. It was my decision but i anticipated an expert to guide the process and it all seemed easy, obvious and practical. I was clear with him that i had no knowledge of this kind of project and was on a strict budget. The actual floor replacement was very well done. I wish i had stayed with that piece. I think Nelson could be good it the project is clear and designed. The shower walls were demolished before the shower door had been ordered so the project sat for weeks while we waited for the order to arrive. My home was in the plastic covered construction site with no activity for weeks. In hindsight they should have cleaned up for me and then re-laid the plastic when work recommenced weeks later. But they did what was easier for them. When I complained, Nelson told me that it was my fault as i wanted work to begin and so they did. However he had not ever told me that the shower door took weeks for delivery. So I felt it was his role as project manager to give me the big picture of all the pieces and to propose a new project schedule for the expanded project. This was the big missing piece. There had already been some delays before we began as he needed to reschedule the starting date. So i was keen to begin but not if i had known about in a mess without my bathroom for weeks. The shower door was not the one i had requested. I found Nelson unhelpful in choosing fixtures. I was sent to a design room to make my choices . There i was given catalogues by a too busy person and i made choices from pictures. Nelson ordered the shower door and got it wrong and so i ended up with the exact same door i was replacing. A door I disliked. When i complained i was told it was my fault as i should have seen the door when it was delivered and returned it! But I was not project manager. i was working that day when workmen took delivery and installed the thing. Since that day several attachments have fallen off the door and it is hanging by the top only and swings like laundry on a line and i need now to employ some workman to come and fix the new shower door, that i don't like. I got expert opinion of the work after it was completed and was told the overall work was satisfactory but not really great. I was asked to choose fixtures etc and i did, based on looks only. I was clear that I have no knowledge of bathroom fixtures. i needed then to have his expert guidance on my choices to be sure they would actually fit in the places they were to go. The new sink faucets still do not have functioning sink closure levers. The tub lever does not fit where it needs to. It is ok but I trusted him to check my design choices for suitability. Again i think Nelson is someone to use for carrying out clear specific design choices made by a designer. The workmen were very nice and punctual. I just felt i did a major house repair and did not have the guidance i needed. My complaints were met with passing blame back to me. He had tendency to make some unappreciated comments to my distress also. I don't feel Nelson always had good focus on the project. He checked the work by phone photos send by workman. Although he did come at the end to check everything as I was not happy and we spent a long time going over everything. I probably would not use this company again but I would imagine others could have great results, if you are very clear on what you want and ask for a plan in advance.
Description of Work: I asked for the services of Peak Carpentry for replacing my shower floor. The one-piece existing floor for the double shower was not even and was not draining properly. A puddle always remained on one side. The job grew into full shower wall tile, plumbing addition for handheld shower addition to main shower, shower sliding door replacement, plus fixture replacement for 2 sinks and bathtub - in April. 2010

Nelson and his team did a complete overhaul on a full bathroom. This was an amazing experience, because after Nelson gave me an estimate and I picked out tile, paint, vanity, and other items, I went on my honeymoon. When I came home the ENTIRE project was completed. It looked amazing! Nelson and his team were extremely professional and friendly. I have used them before so I felt very comfortable having them in my home. They even took care to keep my cats from escaping (which they are very good at!)
Description of Work: Demo'd old bathroom. Removed all debris. Repaired water damage to subfloor. Moved plumbing to accomodate new vanity. Installed new tub and all lines. Ran line for new outlet box. Installed new light fixture. Repaired/replaced drywall. Installed tile surround for new bath. Installed new tile floor. Installed trim and painted entire bath. Installed toilet, vanity, sink, faucet, and all accessories (towel bar etc.)
I would absolutely use them again in the future as I thought that they were great. Everybody that came was great.
Description of Work: I used Peak Carpentry a month or two ago. They remodeled the upstairs hallway bathroom in my house. They did the tiling and put in a new exhaust fan. They redid electrical work, did the drywall and installed a sink. They installed all new doors in the upstairs hallway for all the upstairs rooms and all new trims. They also put in a toilet and the toilet paper receptacles.

I?ve been an Angie?s List member for several years now. Unfortunately, I was not able to give Peak Carpentry the highest marks. While the cost was reasonable and the workers arrived on time and finished on schedule, there were just too many issues that added up to bring down the grade: - Nelson Laur, the owner of Peak Carpentry, did not honor the 5% discount coupon advertised on his Angie?s List page. Saying that he forgot that he had a coupon, he agreed to take $200 off but not 5%. - Nelson was very communicative, until I sent in my deposit. Then his attitude seemed to change. A week before the job started, I called Nelson to confirm he had ordered the hardwood for the floors. My husband called him too, and this must have annoyed Nelson, since he said we needed to ?stop with the emails and phone calls,? and that he felt like he talked to me more that week than his own wife. - When Nelson delivered the hardwood, he drove the boxes over in the rain without covering them with a tarp. The rain didn?t soak through the cardboard boxes, but it would have been nice if Nelson had not risked getting them wet. - Once the job started, Nelson?s lack of willingness to communicate resulted in errors, including the mis-positioning of the kitchen island, which resulted in the electrical outlet wiring being drilled through the floor in the wrong place. - Nelson drilled several unnecessary holes in the cabinets, one of which required replacing a cabinet door. When I open the kitchen cabinets, I can still see holes that never got filled. - Nelson also made promises that never materialized: He said he had ?a great kitchen guy? named Tim Carter who would install the cabinets, but Tim never appeared. Nelson also said the wood floor would be installed by laying out all the pieces to make sure they look good before installing. Instead, he sent 2 subcontractors who just laid the planks right out of the box. As a result, several planks with obvious defects, chipped corners, and knots in the wood were laid in high-traffic areas of the kitchen. - On the last day of the job, Nelson put in a thick caulk line on the kitchen backsplash. I am still trying to scrape this off so it looks neater. - I shopped for and paid for some materials like paint, grout, and a plumbing connector and did not get reimbursed even though the contract said materials were included. I didn?t quibble since the cost was only about $60, but members should be aware that these kinds of issues can arise. - Overall, Nelson just didn?t seem to enjoy or take pride in his work. During the job, I played nice and took most of his snarky comments in stride because I just wanted the job completed, but looking back, I really think he was disrespectful. He jokingly admitted he had been a ?messy Marvin? on my job but did not offer any explanations as to why. On the bright side, Nelson?s employee Jared Thompson turned out to be the Dr. Jekyll to Nelson?s Mr. Hyde. He apologized for Nelson's off-putting attitude and tried to make up for it by being super-friendly and responsive. Because Jared was such a hard worker and earned my trust, I almost considered hiring Peak for another job, but after recalling all the bad vibes I got from Nelson on my kitchen project, I thought better of it.
Description of Work: Remodeled kitchen including demo, electrical, plumbing, drywall, hardwood floor installation, cabinet installation, painting, and tile backsplash. Subcontractors were used for the electrical, hardwood floors, and painting.

I contacted Peak via email, through the website. We exchanged a couple of emails, agreed on a date and time for an estimate. Everything went smoothly. After a couple of weeks, I decided to hire Peak to perform the repair. He showed up on time, fixed the door and came back the next day to finish the job. Communication was great. The repair was great and I had a good experience with this contractor.
Description of Work: My front door was not closing correctly and there was some exterior wood above the door that was rotting.

Poor. Be cautious of anyone or company that doesn't return phone calls.
Description of Work: This company never returned my phone call.
Nelson completed the plumbing work when we had our bathroom remodeled and we were impressed with his professionalism and work. When we decided to remodel the kitchen, we called him without hesitation. We outlined the scope of the project and he promptly prepared a quote. We worked with a cabinet company he recommended to select cabinets and we were very pleased with the recommendation. When the work commenced, we had an outline of how the work was to proceed and he kept us informed by email on a regular basis. His work crew did an excellent job gutting the kitchen, correcting the drywall issues, installing the cabinets, carpentry work, and all of the other little things we didn't see. They were prompt, professional and had good ideas as the job progressed. We added tile backsplash which wasn't in the original scope of work and it turned out beautiful. The subcontractors showed up when scheduled and performed excellent work. We couldn't be happier with the work and we love our new kitchen.
Description of Work: Peak Carpentry remodeled our kitchen installing new cabinets, Silestone counter, tile backsplash, and new appliances. They replaced and repaired some of the ceiling drywall, rerouted duct work, installed a gas line to kitchen, removed the cabinet bulkhead and drywalled, rerouted a vent pipe and corrected the microwave vent. Electrical work included rewiring the kitchen, adding new switches and adding recessed lighting. They also painted the kitchen and bathroom. They also opened up a wall between the living room and kitchen.

Great job by these guys. Estimate was pretty close to final costs--we made some additional adds throughout, so we were generally to blame for the costs going up. We were very pleased with the work. The team was very pleasant and professional--we look forward to hiring them again for work in the future.

Nelson was pleasant to work with, punctual and priced the job fairly. There were some challenges along the way in an 80 year old house. His referral for the retailer selling the cabinets was excellent to work with and did a fine job helping with the many choices that needed to be made. Some custom touches required Nelson's carpentry and cabinetry making skills that came out quite nicely. Overall, the job turned out well and we would use Peak Carpentry again.
Description of Work: We remolded the kitchen with new maple cabinets, some electrical upgrades and a ceiling replacement.
They were subcontracted by somebody else that I am working with. The price was probably $1600 including the materials. They were punctual and professional. They did the work and completed on time. They showed up on time as well. They were professional in terms of their attitude. Their price was excellent. I might use their services again.
Description of Work: I used the services of Peak Carpentry about two weeks ago for fixing the drywall which was cut out because there was a leak due to water damage. They repainted my ceiling. They disconnected my plumbing in my bathroom for the tile work to be redone. They then connected back the plumbing. They also installed some light fixtures.

Initially the company's owner was very responsive to our needs. It became apparent by the end, though, that he was more interested in finishing up our projects too quickly to move on to the other commitments he'd made. He was absent for a lot of the work and delegated the majority of things to his employees. The end cost was higher than estimated and the work took longer to complete. I had to press the issue when it came to a large piece of rotten wood on our deck which he didn't want to take the time to replace. One of our biggest disappointments came from the painter Nelson recommended-Gary. Gary came to our house only once to do the paint estimate. He was never present for any portion of the work. His crew initially painted in the rain. They were reluctant to return to do a better job when the weather improved. After the painting was completed, we were asked to pay twice the estimated cost-which we refused to do. A lot of the exterior pain pealed off within a few months and my husband has already had to paint over it.
Description of Work: We needed some of our basement windows replaced as well as some work to repair some exterior rotted wood around door/window frames.

It went extremely well. What we had learned from the first installation was applied here, and the installation, process, and completion were near flawless.
Description of Work: We brought Nelson back to do our master bathroom, after he did such a good job on the first bathroom remodelling. The bathroom was gutted, we purchased the fixtures, tub, etc, Nelson did the demo and rebuild and all installation work, to include tub and floor tiling, lighting, plumbing, crown molding.

The project was delayed by the unusual number of rainy days in October, but once the work began, it was completed in a timely manner. All the workers were professional, courteous(no loud radios) and very helpful. They cleaned up at the close of each work day.The owner, Nelson Laur, consulted us on every decision that had to be made, plus he examined all the work his men did. We are very happy with the finished product.

Bottom line - the whole experience was great. On time; quality work; fair price; professional and easy to do business with. I got everything I wanted. Details: Evaluated exterior wall weather/water damage. Received bids from 4 vendors. Selected Peak Carpentry due to owner - Nelson Laur. Quality guy. Experienced; superior insight of total job; assessment and communication of potential hidden issues omitted by other vendors; good price; and perceived ease factor of doing business. The job required one helper, who turned out to be quick, thorough and reliable. This work was done on an old (1950's) house, and so locating matching siding was a difficult task. Nelson went above & beyond, personally researching several suppliers and was able to deliver a perfect match with the older look and feel. Also, extreme care had to be taken regarding the interior side of the wall that was not damaged, as fragile household items and polished stonework was involved. I was not disappointed and will call upon Peak Carpentry for future repairs and upgrades where real care is necessary. I feel like he was working on his own home.
Description of Work: Repaired rotted wood inside of exterior house wall. To accomplish: Removed siding and storm door; temporarily supported wall frame; removed and replaced bad wood. Ensured good weather seal with Tyvek and caulk; replaced with new siding; improved door frame fit; and patched up masonry at base of wall to channel rain away.

We had an excellent experience working with Nelson Laur. His craftsmanship and professionalism are superior, both when performing the work himself and when supervising the work of others on his team. He was reliable (always here when he said he would be) from the initial estimate through final close out. We had just come off a bad experience with the guy who started one bathroom renovation, and Nelson took over the job, fixed all the problems and proceeded to do an excellent job on a second bathroom. Moreover, Nelson's communication skills are excellent, keeping in daily contact through in-person, e-mail, or phone conversations. He is very "homeowner friendly."
Description of Work: Peak Carpentry completely remodeled two bathrooms, hung several doors, built custom door trim, and performed other assorted tasks (major & minor plumbing, wiring, fine carpentry, general contracting services). Where Nelson Laur (owner of Peak Carpentry, LLC) was unable to perform the work himself he brought in a professional with the requisite expertise.
