Work started on time demo went well. I was told that we needed to replace all of the joists in the kitchen and all of the joists in the bedroom on the other side of kitchen. That was really not unexpected on the old house expensive but not unexpected that hidden damage will be found. and then a month later was told I needed a steel beam added for strength. I was told the additional work would take another 30 days. but was promised no later than Oct. 1. had to cancel a party that I had planned for 10/15. That again not that unexpected. Was PROMISED I could plan my thanksgiving dinner in the kitchen. well needless to say when I was given the "keys" so to speak on Christmas Eve. 5 months after the start date. If the only thing was the time he might have gotten C's . but in the days weeks and months to come too many thing were found and I had to fix to make it right. some things I couldn't even fix with out major hardship. one such thing was the pocket door that was hung improperly. microwave and the dishwasher on at the same time trip the breaker. sink plumbing with hot on right which meant the dishwasher was feed with cold and the pull out faucet lines would get twisted and hung up so the weight would not pull the handle back in. MANY MANY other things. I just chalked it up to experience. Until my daughter bought the house and started renos or her own. When I got this call from her and she asked me to meet her contractor and he started pointing things out that should have caused fires ie junction boxes in the walls, three pieces of 14/2 taped together instead of reruning a wire that was long enough. I just had to write a review. To warn others.
Description of Work: The project started with a kitchen remodel to include the replacement of 2 floor joists. hanging cabinets, plumbing, electrical, drywall. ect. original time est. 30 days work started first week July.

Response from S & J Painting & Remodeling
This job was done 5 years ago and these are quite harsh comments considering the time span. It was quite a difficult job and there were more and more issues every day that would pop up. It does happen with very old houses. The electrician that did the work was not an employee of S&J and we have never worked with him since so I cannot comment on that. In the years that have gone by we have all new workers who have been doing work with S&J for several years and as can be seen by our very high reviews on Angie's List that the high majority of our customers are extremely satisfied with our work. If ever there are any issues that arise on a job I am sure to step in immediately to handle them even if it is at my cost. I do not ever want to see a customer unhappy. If there were any issues with the job you should have contacted me. Now 5 years later I hear about problems. I am sorry you were not satisfied with the work done but we are a completely different company today that what we were 5 years ago with the job you are rating us on. Our workers are skilled and professional and we all take pride in our work and our customer service.

The work that S&J Painting and Remodeling did was good. It was odd that the owner sent us an email regarding the payment two hours after the job was done. The fan was not installed properly. The workers that came in my house did a good job.?The owner never came to check the final job and make sure that everything was okay. I consider that poor customer service etiquette.
Description of Work: S&J Painting and Remodeling removed all the ceiling that they checked. They checked the 4x4 just to make sure there was no damage to the wood. After making an assessment and making sure everything was okay, they installed the roof. They also installed a small fan at the kitchen.

The odyssey of this project extends over the better part of a year, so fasten your seatbelts (or skip down to the last paragraph for the bottom line). We contacted S&J (whom we'd used before) to built a top-of-the-line custom shed. That was May 4, 2012. The owner, Jerry, responded by email three days later, saying he'd have someone get in touch with us. In a few days, Steve came out to discuss the project and we received a bid on May 30. A little slow, but ok. It was a little more than we wanted to spend, so we made some changes to the project and asked for a new bid, which was received a week later, on June 6. Much better turnaround. We had some questions regarding setbacks from property lines, and to make a long story short, it took us until early July to get answers from the county. This led to more changes (we had to reduce the size of the shed to avoid setback requirements), which we requested on July 16. Six days later, Steve responded that had been on vacation and would get back to us. Time passes... On August 10, I again emailed Steve. We receive the revised bid four days later, but Steve notes that they won't be able to start work until November or December because they're busy. That's understandable, and on Aug 21, I respond that we're ready to sign the contract, and when can he come pick it up? No response. Time passes... On September 10, I email Steve again asking if they're still interested in the work. He apologizes and says he's been out of town and says at this point they couldn't do the work until January. We don't want the footers dug while the ground is frozen, since that can lead to shifting later, so we decide to wait and see if we can get on their schedule for the spring. I contact him again on November 19, asking if they can schedule the work for March. The next day, he responds "Perhaps. Let me get through December and see." Time passes... In mid February, I call the company, and receive a return call from Jerry a day or so later. He suggests I email Steve. I explained that Steve hasn't been too responsive to email, which was why I called instead, but I decide to give it a final try. On February 20, I contact Steve again asking when we can get this scheduled. We've never heard back. The bottom line is that as of last August, we were ready to sign the contract, but for whatever reason, S&J didn't seem interested in our job anymore. But instead of telling us flat out that they were going to pass on the work, we felt like they strung us along for six months, never actually saying "no," but never accepting the signed contract or putting us on their schedule either (I should add that I asked if they were still interested in the job several times at various points along the way). In the end, they just ignored us. In March, we found another contractor on Angie's List to do the work (for less, I might add), who was able to complete the job within a month of our first exchange of emails. I would say the quality was similar (based on a previous project where we used S&J), but the responsiveness and customer service were like night and day. I hate having to write a negative review since we'd been reasonably happy with S&J on our previous job (although even then, the communication had been kind of slow), but when a company seems this indifferent to you as a customer, it really says a lot.
Description of Work: Construct a 10x10 shed on nine concrete footers placed on a moderately steep slope. It was to be built of pressure treated lumber, with vinyl siding and a steel double door. It was to have a gabled roof with architectural shingles, gutters, and ridge venting. The area under the shed was to be laid with gravel and enclosed with insect screen and metal screen to keep out larger animals, covered with decorative lattice, all extending below grade.

I am truly lost as to what happened with this job. I have never, and would never, string a customer, or potential customer, along for a year if we did not want to do a job. Steve has been doing work with us for several years and has always had stellar reports and reviews. I do know there were time lapsed due to scheduling conflicts and then weather conflicts and once winter came along he couldn't do the job outside. Steve did have a computer crash and lost all his data and was not able to get it back so we do not have exact dates. It is very unfortunate that this has happened but it certainly was not something that was meant to happen. We have done work for you previously and it went well and as anyone can see from over very positive reports on Angie's List we do very good work and our customers are happy. We did drop the ball on this, there are no good excuses for it, and I sincerely apologize for that.

Overall project went great. The owner was very responsive in communications and the work performed did not exceed the estimate. I do suggest being very specific about the drywall repairs. I was expecting more attention to detail around the light switches and HVAC vents as it relates to drywall repair. We are very happy with the end result and the painting skills of this company are very good in our opinion.

Unfortunately there are areas we do not work in. It's quite unfair to give us an F for not servicing certain areas. We cannot travel to every area - it's just not feasible. I'm sorry we were not able to help you but hope you were able to find someone to take care of it for you.

We had a great experience with this company. The workers were very polite and helpful. They arrived on time and cleaned up at the end of each day. We had an issue with the newly installed jetted tub leaking some water underneath and they were very helpful in fixing the issue and making sure everything ran smoothly. The new tile looks great! We will definitely keep them on the list to contact for future projects.

We used them in the beginning of last month. They painted about 4 rooms. They were prompt and they did a really good job. We were very happy with them. I am hoping to use them again. There was a problem and they gladly came back and touched it up. They made sure that you were happy before they went. They were very pleasant. They did not clean up according to my specification. Though nothing major. I would use them again in the future.

For the things that they did quote for, they seemed to have a competitive price. They were really professional. They itemized it which is so helpful. They had a lot of details of what's covered and what's not and I saw that really clearly. They did take a long time to get back to me and it was over a week.

Purchased home in need of significant repairs. Many holes in walls that needed repair. Also work done in house by electricians and plumbers required a lot of patching. These guys were great. They also worked around the flooring guys, who were a bunch of spoiled kids. Everything went very well. They also offered to come back and do touchup work after move was complete. Will be calling them soon, since most furniture is in and the movers banged up several walls. Overall Great.

Jerry came over and did an assessment of the two projects we needed done. He promptly submitted his estimate for the projects. After getting a few more estimates his was the best deal and we had the feeling that he would make sure the job was done right. It took a few weeks to schedule the work once we gave him the go ahead. Elias came over on a Saturday morning to evaluate supplies needed and get a feel for exactly what we needed done so he could start first thing Monday morning. The team was prompt every morning and communicated very well with us on the status of the work and what to expect. Usually I met Elias in the morning before work to go over what was to happen that day and deal with any direction we need to give him so the details were done to our satisfaction. The basement project went very quickly and was done very well. The drywall was finished so nice you can't tell that there is new drywall two feet up around the basement. We are very pleased with the paint job as well. The master bath had a few issues as we discovered water damage issues when the tile was pulled up. They also discovered that the toilet connection in the bathroom had gone bad. Solutions to the issues were quickly assessed and very little extras were tacked on due to unanticipated work. We ordered the tile ourselves and they picked it up at the distributor. This left them following the basic design we came up with that needed to be adjusted because the width between the tub and walls was not lining up with the size tile we ordered. Elias came up with a solution that worked very well The whole project was well done and professional finished. The basement looks great and is awaiting carpet to finish the job. The bathroom looks fantastic and we can't wait for the new shower glass to come in (from a glass place directly).
Description of Work: Replaced bottom two feet of drywall in basement, finished drywall and painted entire room. This also included two small drywall fixes in ceiling. Also, replaced tile in master bath which included replacing shower fixtures.

One person was sent and did a pretty good job getting everything done in just two days. The only complaint I have is that the new paint got on some of the other walls bordering the painted areas, which is pretty noticeable since the paint we used was brown and the adjoining walls are white. However, the quality of the work was great considering the price. We had gotten several other estimates that were significantly higher S and J and we would definitely use them again.

S&J Painting and Remodeling's quote was actually lower, but he didn't seem as knowledgeable about old houses. He just said oh yeah I will dry wall that for $2000. Where as the guy I went with talked about knowing when the house was built, what type of ceiling I already had, and gave me different options to repair it. He wasn't going to put up any barriers to keep the dust from getting all over the house. His pricing was very good. He was very inexpensive and I probably would have gotten what I paid for, but not necessarily what I wanted. He was very responsive.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from S&J Painting and Remodeling. I had my ceiling fall in. I live in a house that was built in the 1840's and weird things happen. It was an old plaster lag ceiling and they said just because of road vibration, hot and cold, and that kind of thing that over 175 years it just fell down. When it fell at 4 o'clock in the morning it sounded like someone drove a train through my house.

The parquet tiles by a sliding glass door had rotted due to a long term leak that had gone unsuspected for a few years. Bob Sloan tried to find similar tiles but was unsuccessful. The first attempt at repair was to place two strips of plywood with finish like the oak tiles by the door but the plywood warped. The second attempt was to remove the strips and cut the plywood into squares like the original parquet. This seems to have worked out well. The linoleum had lifted at a joint - for a second time and was damaged. Using linoleum left over from the original installation the flooring was cut on either side of the joint and a section about one foot wide was put down. The linoleum is a pretty good simulation of a random width wood floor so the new joints while not a perfect match do not stand out as being wrong. The joint filler to make the joints look like embossed ones in the linoleum did not hold up and a dark paint will be tried.
Description of Work: Cracked and flaking wall in bathroom spackled and painted - B Linoleum flooring joint repaired - B minus Parquet floor tiles replaced - the original tiles could not be duplicated but reasonable facsimiles were made from plywood and approximated the originals. - B

Overall I was happy with the experience. The contractor was willing to talk to me about his plan for fixing everything and made some suggestions for things we could do in the future (in regards to basement flooding issues). The contractor showed up with a helper and they finished both jobs within an hour and a half. The only negative would be punctuality. He was 30 minutes late for the estimate and an hour late on the day the work was performed.
Description of Work: We had two properties that needed work done. On one house we had the gutters reattached, a downspout reattached and a new furnace vent cap installed. At the other property we needed a small hole on the outside of the house repaired. The basement door had rotting wood around it due to repeated flooding so a new door sweep was installed and the rotted wood was sealed with bondo.

The owner and his son came out and looked at the project and promised to get back to my husband with prices over the following weekend. We did not receive any information. I e-mailed the owner directly to ask for prices and got absolutely no response. Our job was not a very large dollar one. If the company did not want the job, it would have been a simple matter to just respond and let us know. No hard feelings. However, to completely ignore and not respond is very unprofessional.

I am sorry for your inconvenience. The owner did not come out for an estimate - the man that came out is our handyman. Unfortunately after the estimate he did come down with a very bad case of the flu and was very sick. I, the owner, did not realize you were waiting on an estimate. Whenever a customer has a problem the office needs to be contacted immediately because things do come up occasionally. I only found out about you being unhappy and not receiving your estimate by this Angie's List report. Had I been contacted I would have gotten on this right away. I was not even given an opportunity to make things right. As my previous reports show I am dedicated to excellent customer service and do everything in my power to make sure all our customers are happy. Again I apologize that we were not unable help you but would have liked the chance to meet with you and take care of the situation.
