S & J Painting & Remodeling

Very professional, both painters worked the full 8 hours. We had one large room that required ceiling, trim and walls with 2 colors. It took them 8 hours to complete the one room. The room looks great!!

Things started off very badly, but ended very well. In the morning, I received a call from Jerry, the owner, and he said that the painters scheduled to perform my work were not answering their phone and he could not locate them. He asked if we could reschedule for another day. Since I was staying home already and we had other workers coming in the following day who needed the painting to be completed, I told Jerry that I wanted someone to come that day - even if they arrived late and stayed late. Jerry called back an hour later and said that he was pulling two guys off another job, but they wouldn't arrive until about Noon because they had to finish up the other job. I was a little bit concerned about getting two painters who had already worked for half a day and expecting them to work for another 8 hours and give 100% effort, but we really needed to get the painting done. Jerry sent Marvin and Alex Jr, and I quickly realized there was nothing to worry about. They were really nice guys and extremely hard working painters. We started off by having them prime and paint the 3 car garage that has 12 foot ceilings. We used one coat of primer on the ceiling and I wasn't happy with how it looked because it didn't fully cover so they were very happy to apply another coat of primer which looked much better. After the garage was done, we still had some more painting to do in the basement. I showed them and assumed that they would do as much as possible to burn the rest of the 8 hours. There were only about 2.5 hours left for the deal and these guys had already worked more than a full day (the previous job plus all of the painting in our garage). My wife and I watched them for a while and it was really amazing - I have never seen people paint as fast as these guys. They were just priming, but the basement is huge and there are a lot of walls to cover. It was like watching the Tazmanian devil in the cartoons, they moved extremely fast but still did a good job. Surprisingly, they completed the whole basement as well as the garage. We were very happy with Marvin and Alex Jr and highly recommend them.

Overall the job went very smoothly. They finished within the general estimate of how long it would take. The workers were polite and hardworking and kept our house as clean as possible. You'd never know there had been wallpaper where it was removed. It was a very large job which two other local painters provided estimates that were close to double the price.

Ordered the deal, and the company responded the next day. However, they cannot do the work for a couple of weeks and I need it done sooner.

I was not happy with the initial work done, but the company contacted me and made every effort to make sure the problem was rectified. I appreciate companies that take their work seriously, which S&J did. They followed up on my early concerns and made sure I went away a satisfied customer.

The painting project turned out great! I was extremely impressed with Alex and Marvin's work. They were both very courteous, friendly, polite, neat, quick - I just can't say enough about their work. I purchased the $450 Big Deal - 2 Painters for a Day, 8 hours each. We needed to have our living room, family room, hallway and stairway walls painted. I didn't think that they would be able to get all of this done in a day, but to my surprise, they did - AND, it was done very well. We usually paint ourselves, but this time we decided to hire someone else to do the job; so, I was somewhat skeptical about how it might turn out. I have told everyone what a great job Alex and Marvin did; and you can believe, if I need something else done, I will sure give you a call.

Excellent work. Alex is an outstanding plaster/drywall repair. He really knew how to fix problems and made the ceiling look perfect. Johnathan and Marvin worked great as a team, painting all 4 rooms on the main floor. Once we moved all our stuff out of the house and onto a rental truck, the painting team worked fast and efficiently. The rooms looked fantastic when complete.

It was great. The price and work were good. Jose, Maurice, and Jose did an excellent job. The house looks really nice. The owners, Jerry and Stacy, were very pleasant and reliable and always called me back promptly. I would definitely have them back and highly recommend them.

It was great. Marvin and Alexis were great workers punctual and clean. The walls look great! there is no way I was going to be able to do such a big project!

Here is a list of what happened while work was being done on my house: 1. They painted in a room I specifically asked them not to paint in since I had my cats in there. They ignored me and painted in there anyway. They let one cat out and trapped it in another room all day. When I told the company owner, he said the worker might not have understood me because he doesn't speak English. 2. A razor sharp knife was left with blade exposed on a leather chair in my living room. 3. Switch and socket covers were not removed when painting. Attempts to remove then resulted in peeling the paint off of the wall in several cases. One electrical socket was completely painted over. I specifically asked them to remove the covers after noticing this extremely basic mistake early in the job. So they removed a few while I was watching. When I left for work, they went right back to leaving them on and painting around and over the edges of them. 4. Paint on my kitchen cabinets. 5.Painted over door and cabinet hinges. 6.Paint smeared on doorknobs. 7. Paint spots of my hardwood floor and fireplace brick. 8. Wall color paint spots on the ceiling. 9. Painted over a piece of molding I asked them to remove. 10. Shorted wiring behind drywall they installed. This was fixed - eventually. 11. Employees showed up late often. One day an employee showed up by himself at 10 am without paint. His job was to paint. When I contacted the project manager, he asked me to go out and buy it for him. This was after we agreed they would buy the materials for the job and be reimbursed. I was told the employee didn't have enough money. Very poor organization and logistics. 12. I had several doors replaced. When some (not all) of the new doors were installed, the workers decided to change color schemes for me by installing hinges that not only matched nothing in the house, they didn't even match the doorknobs (bronze vs gold or gold vs silver). I went from one color (bronze) in the house to three. I was told the hinges on a new exterior door could not be replaced because they don't come in the color I wanted. This is false. I just replaced them myself with hinges at Home Depot. They also charged me for all the wrong materials they bought. 13. Two closets were painted the wrong color. I wanted white closets - a very standard closet color. 14. I told them the color paint I wanted by showing them half empty 5 gallon paint containers. I expected them to use up what I had before buying new supplies. They didn't. I now have plenty of extra paint - about 6 gallons total in 2 different colors. Some of the things were eventually fixed. Some were not. It was difficult to find all of the constant sloppy mistakes and errors. Eventually, I just wanted them out of my house. If you don't check their work and complain, you get what you get. There seemed to be no desire to check their own work and make corrections. I specifically told the workers that if they had any questions to call me. I wrote my name and number on my refrigerator white board. I never received a call. They just did whatever they wanted to do. If you don?t speak up, you get whatever they decide for you - even if it directly contradicts what you asked for. The owner always called me back quickly when I complained. However, this only occasionally resulted in any changes in the behavior of his employees and the quality of work done. After complaining about sloppiness and punctuality, I was told workers would arrive between 8:30 and 9 am the following day. I left for work at 10 am the next day and never saw them. If you are looking for attention to detail, punctual arrival times, and clear communication - look elsewhere.

They did a great job. We were very happy with the results. Little slow getting started on the first day but the ceilings look fantastic. We had textured ceilings that really looked outdated and old. What a difference! They were very professional, really nice guys that came and did the work. Jerry was very responsive and called back quickly when we left messages. We would definitely use them again. We are not from the Baltimore area and to be able to use Angie's List to find good reliable people was really helpful.

We had a small fire in our house that was luckily contained to the small bathroom downstairs. The fire was started by the bathroom exhaust fan. We weren't home at the time so the fire department had to breakdown the front door. The end result was soot stained entire bathroom. Jerry was very friendly and broke down the details of what his company does which is a labor based company only. They provide the labor and we provide the design & materials which keeps the cost down to a minimal. He walked me through the whole process on what would be required to do and how much time it would actually take. The small half bathroom and front door was estimated to take 2 ½ days of labor to complete based on what he thought. FYI ? all other contractors were stating a lot longer for just a simple job. He said we could work with Nestor (Forman) to obtain the materials so we didn?t have to pay for delivery or get materials we didn?t need. The materials weren?t hard to figure out but Nestor was able to help me get the right materials. The main items I focused on were the vanity items for the bathroom. We had to get some materials on the fly and they provided receipts for materials for cash reimbursement (with no upcharge for getting it). The materials ran us about $1000 for the complete gut and replacement of everything in a 4x4 bathroom (down to base boards). The front door was taken care of in a ½ day and was just a replacement of a piece of the frame luckily which was built into overall cost of the job. The job had a few bumps but nothing we couldn?t work through. First off we decided to change the bathroom vanity up to a pedestal sink which had some issues with the drainage piping. We opted for showing the drainage pipe to avoid extra cost and just have them paint the pipe white to match everything. Second issue came up was the quoted for total time not for drying time on the job so the job took longer than expected but we only paid for when the work was actually happening. Last issue was the lighting switch had some old wiring so we had to replace some of the wiring but at least they didn?t have to put holes in the wall and it only took an hour of time. Nestor was our primary person once the job got started he kept us informed each day when it was getting close to time to go for the day. Our first day was mainly spent 1-2 hours getting materials and 2-3 hours getting the bathroom gutted down to the base boards. Nestor was the one that did gut out which was simple enough he was able to savage some items for use in the bathroom but not much. The other time the initial day was going to Lowe?s for buying the materials ? they use home depot mostly so using Lowes took extra time for us to get some materials. We were able to get everything we needed but a few items because I forgot to get measurements. The second day the handyman came in and explained the issue with the bathroom and actually took his time measuring everything for the new design of the bathroom. He worked with Nestor to get additional materials for the sink. The day was mostly spent on putting up the drywall; sink measurements, installing new door, new base board for the bathroom floor and handling the first coat of drywall mud. When he left the second day the bathroom started looking further along from the day before. Third day came at fixing the door and applying another coat of drywall mud in the morning and evening. This was the one day that two guys were working as a team for the job. The handyman did the technical items while the second guy provided painting needs some small items like sealant around the doors, sink, and frame work. The second man ended up being the same guy to come in and finish up the painting which was done at very good quality. The guy even took time to install an extra door lock to the front door to help make it seal better. The bathroom really took shape this day and it was looking like a whole new bathroom. It was just in need of painting but due to the dry wall needing to set they couldn?t work the next day. That meant they couldn?t finish the job by the third day so we had to go to one more day which ended up being a half a day. The last day we had the painter come over and finish up the job for the painting which didn?t take long because he already applied a prime coat to the door. We kept the colors simple white door with grey on the walls. He used only 1 gallon of primer paint (some left over) 1 pint of white for the door, base boards, and ceiling (with nothing left over) and 1 gallon of our color for the walls which has some left over. I say the painter did a wonderful job with the paint and we got our paints worth used. During the last day though the light switch acted up but the painter couldn?t fix it so we had the handy man come back for an hour which includes time to get the part to fix it to getting it working again. Overall, we will be using them again for the future jobs ? we are planning to use them for our kitchen and our other bathroom. The best thing was that Jerry was easy to work with and so were Nestor and his crew. Whenever I called the main number around 9am and 5:30PM I usually got a person on the phone or someone returned (Jerry) my call within an hour. During the day was more challenging but I can understand that because they are out on the job working. The final product was more than acceptable for the wife and when she is happy I am happy too. The main thing to remember able working with S&J is that they work with you specially when you have a budget to work with. I wanted to Say thanks to Jerry and Nestor and to all the crew guys that came over to help get the job done and for Stacey booking the time slot for us. You will be hearing from us again soon.

Purchased the big Deal, 2 painters for 8 hours. Maurice and Marvin arrived right on time, were very professional and courteous and completed all the desired work on schedule. They did an excellent job patching all the dings and nicks in the walls and the finished job looks great. Have received a number of compliments on the work

From start to finish--great communication and responsiveness. The painters arrived not only on time but in fact 10 minutes early. Big plus in my book. Alex and Marvin were extremely professional and pleasant. The work was completed as I had requested. Not only would I recommend them but I will be scheduling more work done in the near future.

Overall a decent job. Jose was great and did what was expected, and when he did the painting it was excellent. However, other painters brought into the job were far from professional painters. If you're looking for straight lines and painting behind radiators and tight spots this may not be your company. Or...insist on Jose for entire job. During the last day of painting and touch up, electrical plates could not be found and paint cans were left in every room. I had to ask that they be brought into the garage for storage before I allowed the painters to leave. Also, the handyman services were very limited. Jose did replace a bathroom door, but other items that were promised were not performed such as picture hanging and replacement of a pane of glass in a french door (which was originally accepted as a part of the job). Jose was also great with patching of plaster walls...he is truly THE asset to S and J Painting. The other workers may need some more training.

We are very happy with the quality job S&J did. We have used S&J before for painting our own home, and this time it was for our rental. We had called a couple painters for quotes and decided to go with S & J because of past experience with their high quality work and a good price. Jerry Dix is very responsive and professional. He met us a couple days after we called, and gave us a quote within 24hrs. They were pretty booked up, but our timing was flexible, so we had them start about 10 days later. We communicated through email with the office staff about questions and scheduling. They always answered right back and were very professional. It took 4 days to complete the job, which is what we expected. The painters were polite and friendly. The hardest part about the whole process was picking paint colors. It looked great! One of the rental agents was really impressed and even asked who had painted the house. We had not been at the property at the end, so there was one tiny problem. The painters had removed a tubular wall shelf and patched the wall holes and painted but forgot to re-install it, so we had to get some screws and drywall anchors and do it ourselves. It wasn't worth calling S&J to have someone else come back to fix it, but I believe they would have if we had asked. I highly recommend this company and will definitely call them in the future for painting work.

Jerry got us an estimate very quickly, and the price was reasonable. Jose and his crew did a fantastic job of taping and sanding the drywall, and they completed the work in just a couple of visits. Everyone was very courteous and friendly.

They were great. They met all of our expectations and then some!

We are pleased with the work done. We had a little bit of trouble with scheduling. We picked 3 alternative times on Angies list. The vendor sent a message to Angie's list message board asking for a detail list of what needed to be painted. We had to call vender 3 times to schedule an appointment.

The individuals who did the actual painting were Alex and Alex. They got to our house at a reasonable time and were very professional. They helped us workout exactly what we wanted done for the day and they took care of some wall repair in addition to the painting. The paint job itself looks very nice and a lot more got done than we were expecting. Very satisfied with how it all turned out and we will be going with them again if we need more painting done that we can't handle ourselves.

They're fantastic. They have attention to details especially about the clean-up process.

Steve and his crew did a good job. We had our basement completely finished. I provided the design plan and we knew what we wanted and they stuck to it. It came a little below my calculated budget which was good because other competitors were outrageous in their cost. There were a few items that were not included on the actual estimate. I guess I should have covered the requirements a little more. It was a little detail work, but I did not mind doing it myself. The quality of the work is good for the price that we paid. They finished their work in the time frame that they said they would which was important to us. They were respectful and cleaned up the work area everyday. I recommend them and will be looking at S&J for a bathroom project.

Unable to schedule service within 30 days of purchase. Very helpful staff, but we needed our job finished within a month. Angie's list tried to find alternate vendor at similar price and was unable to do so.

They went to the one address instead of the service address but once that was straightened out the c got started. We were not at the property whe they worked but judging by the quantity of painting done and the high quality we got our money's worth.

Extremely poorly, work was very unprofessional. I expected 8 hrs of work, but at 5 hrs they packed and left. I reviewed their work anf found it very unprofessional. Numerous drywall tape very rough and not sanded, spots not painted and I stopped them and had them come back in and paint the obvious spots..The floor had not been cleaned of paint dust, light switch removed then paint roller deposited paint in switch and I now need to clean the paint out so the switch will work, switch cover put on with half the screws missing. door opening electric wire left dangling from the ceiling. No one answers phone when I call. Would not recommend.
