Did not go well. Think they fired the on-site supervisor. quality is substandard. they also built a storage shed whose ceiling now leaks, so we'll now need to get someone else in to rebuild the shed.

After my wife and I bought our first house back in 2011, we hired Rule 4 to make some renovations including: changing light fixtures, adding new power outlet, and changing the closet doors. The electrical work went off without a hitch but the closet doors were a completely different story. We originally had sliders and my wife wanted french doors so we weren't restricted to opening one side at a time. We were completely shocked when after the initial install, there was an inch gap from the top of the doors to the frame of our bedroom closets (3 total) with springs clearly visible. The other closet we had changed didn't close all the way either. The excuse that the doors weren't "standard" size (aka not all were measured) didn't really sit well for us and we waited until the issue was resolved. After the second try (a month later), there was still a smaller gap on our bedroom closets but they're on the bottom and not as noticeable unless you're looking for it; however, my wife at this point was fed up (our first experience with contractors) and we settled for it. I even contacted them a couple months later regarding some other work but they never contacted me back. I guess they had problems with the "trouble" I had made for them. We're thinking about some more renovations which brought this experience back to the forefront of my mind. Be warned!

Worst experience of my life. Dishonest and arrogant owner in Tom Moran do yourself a favor is find someone else he'll give you one price then make an excuse to charge you more. I have a legal contact that he said he doesn't want to follow and dared me to hire an attorney.
Description of Work: Rule4 was hired to do the drywall and painting for our new home. Tom Moran is the owner and was very arrogant from the beginning. The drywall work quality was below average and the painting was horrible. They didn't finish the job on time and then wanted more money without legal justification. We've had to hire someone else to finish the job. I've been told by other true painter that this is common with rule4.

Response from Rule4 Building Group
Rule4 LLC disputes the member's allegations. They are false and not representative of all the facts. The member contracted Rule4 LLC to do drywall and painting for new home. There were problems with construction (not related to Rule4 LLC) causing delays and other problems. The members moved in before completion. They stopped paying construction draws and demanded Rule4 to complete painting despite living in the construction zone.

Brian promptly schedule an appointment with my husband and I. He had clearly Google-snooped us as he had emailed me at work to confirm the appointment (hadn't given him my email address) and he walked in with the public records on our house. After introductions he walked around the first floor of our house looking at every room, then asked about the kitchen renovation (done before we moved in) and negatively critiqued the workmanship. We then proceeded upstairs where he again looked in every room. We made it to the master bathroom where my husband and I described what we did and didn't want. In contrast to other companies we had given us estimates, Brian offered very little feedback or suggestions. When we were done Brian explained that Rule4 would likely be our most expensive estimate but that they provided the best workmanship. We were told we would have to pay several thousand dollars up front to get a design but that it would be credited back for the actual work. We told him were were expecting a detailedproposal before we would select a company; he was emphatic that he wouldn't provide one because he didn't want us to take his ideas to other contractors who will do the job for less. On several occasions he said Rule4 didn't need the work and only wanted 'serious' customers. In fact, I was told I had to send him images of bathroom designs I like before he'd send any proposal to us. When told him that I am an Angie's list user, he told me that he doesn't like Angie's list because people only go there to write negative things; that people happy with the services they receive don't bother with reviews. While my husband and I completely understand not wanting to share ideas with the competition who then low-ball their estimate and do shoddy work, there has to be some detail provided back to the customer to evaluate if this is a company they want to work with. I felt like my home was being critiqued to see if it was worthy of their time. We concluded that Rule4 didn't want to work with us or our 50K+ budget. I don't usually write reviews about a company I don't use, but I felt Rule4 needed to know that yes we are 'serious' customers, but are happily moving forward with a company whose customer service showed us they were 'serious' about getting the job.,
Description of Work: We asked for an estimate for a full master bathroom renovation, the creation of a master walk-in closet and renovation of a second upstairs bathroom.

Went very well. Most of the time we had multiple work crews and the job was completed within two weeks. Crews have no problem working late and will oftentimes work weekends. Don also uses high quality paint (Fine Paints from Vermont). His knowledge of paint is extensive.
Description of Work: We had storm damage from Hurricane Sandy. Don Moran from Rule4 came out and gave us an estimate to re-do drywall, insulation, paint and minor carpentry repair. Our damage was extensive on two levels. They started within days of the estimate. This is the third time we have used Rule4. Don has great follow up skills and makes sure that the job is done quickly.

Many thanks to the member for taking the time to write this review! She mention's that Don uses Fine Paints of Europe (as well as other quality brands) for his work. In fact Don is 1 of only 4 certified users of this paint in Maryland after he traveled to Vermont last month to complete a 2 day training course. It makes all the difference to your finished project. Many thanks again! Allison Ellis Rule4 Marketing Manager

They’re very good! The project manager, Don Moran, came out every day to check on the crew. The crew was incredibly professional and cleaned up each day before they left. They also made sure to get the job done within the time frame they said it’d be done, which meant sometimes working extra hours. They did a great job!
Description of Work: They remodeled my kitchen. They also did a lot of painting and drywall repair. They’re actually coming out to today to provide a quote on some more work to be done!

Don Moran was great to work with and we were most impressed by the fact that he was on-site everyday overseeing/managing the work being done. The cabinets look great and we were really pleased with the work overall. They really went above and beyond by doing little things like re-painting the backsplash area and fixing a broken drawer.
Description of Work: We recently moved into a house that is about 20 years old and the oak wood cabinets looked pretty worn and dated. The kitchen had recently been updated by the previous owners with new stainless appliances, new fixtures and a new granite countertop, We decided to have Rule4 (Don Moran) paint the cabinets white to give them a fresher/cleaner look... and we couldn't be happier with the result! The project included painting the cabinets in the kitchen, laundry room, wet bar, and two bathrooms. Rule4 also did some carpentry work to repair some damaged cabinets/drawers and also to add bead board to the sides of the cabinets.

We asked Rule 4 to assist us with a large design/build project involving a renovated first floor, new kitchen, bathroom and an addition. They were wonderful to speak with, with great examples of work and came out to our home to discuss the job. We told them in advance what our budget was (6 figures) and what we hoped to accomplish in that budget. We needed and wanted suggestions on design to make best use of the space and or assist us in making a better decision to accomplish our goals. They came out and indicated in a nutshell that Yes, they could do the job within our budget but the process would be for us to hire them and pay for the initial design services, which would go towards the overall project. While we understood why they choose to work this way, we had no way of knowing whether we really could afford what we wanted until after we had hired them for the work and at that point we would be stuck using them or out several thousand dollars for the design fee. Ultimately we opted for another firm that took a few extra steps in showing us what our budget would cover by providing preliminary drawings of our project.
Description of Work: Rule 4 did come out and look at our project. No actual work was performed. We opted for another firm.

We contacted the company to get a quote on remodeling the basement to install a kitchenette in our new home. We already had a cabinet design plan and they asked to see it. We sent it to them for the quote and they never responded back to us to this day (over 3 months) to tell us the cost or whether they would do the job in the first place.

Rule 4 is committed to completing a job in a timely manner. They explain in detail how much work is needed to be performed and the amount of time it will take. Some of our past experiences have had contractors start a job and not finish or jump to other jobs. They communicate by phone and e-mail and our accessible through all phases of the work.
Description of Work: Rule 4 did interior drywall repair , interior painting, exterior deck power washing, staining, repair and replacement carpentry of our mahogany deck . I am thoroughly impressed with this company from bidding process, execution, commitment to job and quality of work. Don Moran is extremely responsive and knowledgeable. One of the best painting companies we have used in a long time. I highly recommend them for any remodeling job and am now using them to do a bathroom remodel.

Rule 4 had to come in to my home after I moved in aroiund thanksgiving time. The seams on kitchen ceiling were very noticeable. For a brand new home, this was unacceptable. they tried to repair 4 times adn it got worse. There are also eams in front hallway and baasement adn family room adn almost every other room. I never thought I would pay over a million dollars for a hoem adn see such poor drywall.
Description of Work: Recently purchased NV home that had contracted out to Rule 4 for drywall and painting. my kitchen ceiling has so many unsightly seams from their drywalling. it is horrible. they ahve tried to repair it 4 times and it gets worse. i would never recommend Rule 4 anything.

It went very well. The gentleman I worked with at the time was great and made my job so much easier. He prepared quotes in a timely manner stating exactly what would be done, was amenable to doing additional small handyman jobs along the way and prepared modifications to my contract in a timely manner. He managed the crew well and showed up each day to monitor their work and progress. Crew was polite, clean, and overall did a very good job. Both the supervisor and crew were responsive to any comments or questions I had and were very helpful. I would like to add that, based upon this experience, I tried to contact Rule4 in 2010 to give me a quote on a lot of renovations at my home, but I never get anyone to return my call or e-mail. Was rather disappointed about that after having such a good & responsive experience in 2009, so don't know if I would call them again because of that, but the previous experience in 2009 was very good anyway.
Description of Work: Helped prepare a house for estate sale. Completely stripped house of wallpaper (there was a lot), prepared drywall for painting, painted entire interior of house including woodwork, closets, etc., cleaned and deodorized concrete basement, painted basement walls, installed electrical outlets in 2 bathrooms, and performed some other small miscellaneous handyman projects.
