Worst AC service experience I have had. We will not use again. Very unethical behavior. I strongly recommend you avoid. Darren (tech) and John (service manager) you should be ashamed. This used to be a good company. My female friend called B&B because her AC wasn't cooling. Tech (Darren) arrived quickly, and told her it would cost $3400 to repair. She unknowingly agreed and it was fixed and paid for in about 4 hours - before she could reach me. They charged her $3400 to replace an indoor Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV). Usually a $300 part and 3-4 hours of labor - so $800 or so total. I thought it was a mistake so I called and spoke to the service manager John - he said no that was what it should cost and walked me through the filter and coolant replacement costs and hourly labor rate. I mentioned that the tech would have had to be there for 15 hours on top of his parts and coolant to come to this price by his own math - as he outlined it for me. He was adamant this was the price. The tech was there for 4 hours and this still seemed justifiable to him. Even when he walked through the detail - it wasnt close. I have had several of these replaced (one last year) at different houses and never been charged more than $800. In short, they took advantage of a trusting lady who didn't know any better. This is a shame because we had used B&B many times before at multiple houses and found their service very high quality and reasonably priced. I am sorry that we will no longer use them - and it is a pity what has happened to this company.

Response from B&B AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING SERVICE COMPANY
Sir, I am sorry you were dissatisfied with the price of the heat pump repair at your friend's home. The repair cost included a refrigerant recovery/extraction process of the existing refrigerant, installation of a new manufacturer's OEM thermostatic expansion valve metering device, installation of a new heat pump bi-flow filter drier, brazing materials ( silver- phosphorus brazing rod, oxygen, acetylene), system evacuation, followed by a full system charge with new R-410A refrigerant and a complete operational check. Our cost of the parts, materials, and labor exceed the cost you suggested for this extensive repair when it is performed properly by a MD State Master HVAC technician. If interested, I would be willing to submit and offer the homeowner a free one year service-maintenance agreement. Sincerely, Tom Deimler V.P. / G.M.

Our furnace stopped working 12/20! We called the company we have a service contract with ... they came out, told us the motor and another part needed to be replaced and they couldn't get the motor because they're back ordered. They sent a rep to quote us a new system. After their quote of $25K we called a 2nd company - got a quote for $22K. Called B&B - they looked at the motor and determined it did not need replacement - just the other part, which they had in stock. This morning they replaced the part, checked out the system and saved us $20K!!! We are switching our contract to B&B- highly recommend them!

Great! I sent a message through Angie's List since it was a Saturday after 1:00 and they were closed. Someone called me almost immediately, and 2 technicians arrived within an hour. They diagnosed the problem and repaired the unit. They offered to cover both our units with a service contract and waived the service call fee.

Very well. They came on time and did the work correctly and professionally. They also found a problem with an old furnace part, which was still under warranty. So we only paid for the labor on that one part which will probably keep the heat going for a long time.

Thanks to one of the other reviews, I knew to have my phone with me during the window for the appointment. I called and got an appointment for the next day, it was for 8:30am to 10am, which was great because I go to work at 10:30am. I got a call around 9am that the tech was on his way, he was here within 10 minutes. He gave me a written estimate right then for the work, and also for replacing the entire unit. I do not yet know what I'm going to do for the patio, but I had no problems getting an appointment quickly in my preferred time frame, and getting an estimate quickly. One thing I absolutely hate about home remodeling is having to schedule an appointment for someone to come look at the job then having to wait days for them to get around to giving me an estimate. B&B was efficient and worked within my time frame.

The technician tested the system for leaks and called the supervisor out to verify he found the same leak he found. He did not find a leak. It was good to have the double check. The tech asked me if I wanted to pay $443 to fill the unit with coolant. I asked if that would be to total bill and he said yes. I was then handed a bill for parts and labor totaling $908. Seems to me I was being charged for the coolant, and both the technician and supervisors time. When I questioned it I was told, "What can I say?". I also asked for a price on replacing a nosy fan motor on a small Mitsubishi split heat pump and was quoted $1,400.00. That was outlandish! If they didn't want to do the work they should have just said so. Jerry's Heating & Air conditioning (Ellicott City) did the job for $425 (including parts and labor).

My home's 13 year old HVAC system stopped working a few weeks ago, so I called Band B on recommendation of our home's previous owners, with whom they had a contract. The maintenance tech who came out was on time and very professional, my complaint is the fact that Band B quoted an ridiculous amount ($9860) for a simple SEER 15 3-ton Lennox system. I'm not an expert on this equipment, but after just replacing a system in my Georgia home about 3 months ago for $4500, I knew there was no way a full system would cost more than double in Maryland. Upon getting estimates from two other companies at around $5850 each, I've decided to go with one who isn't trying to rob me. I would NOT recommend going with Band B for anything unless you have money to burn.

Response from B&B AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING SERVICE COMPANY
June 11, 2013 Company overhead dictates any contractor's selling price of an HVAC system, and B&B refuses to sacrifice quality to achieve a cheaper price. Overhead expenses consist of health insurance, utilities, wages, fuel, building maintenance, fleet maintenance and a long list of other business expenses. Our pricing system is designed to cover these overhead costs, as well as trying to maintain a 10% profit margin. It is not uncommon to get a wide range of prices from various companies on the installation of an HVAC system due to different installation practices and materials, as well as differing overhead expenses. If the system has already been replaced, I see that no permits were pulled, to date, as required by code. Hopefully, the work was performed by Maryland licensed HVAC Journeymen or Master Technicians. While permits alone would not increase the job cost significantly, the overhead to hire, train, compensate, and license these professionals all figure into the cost of the job. I would like to thank you for your comments, especially those regarding the professionalism of our Journeyman technician. Sincerely, Thomas J. Deimler Vice President / General Manager

Purchased new home in May. Previous owner had annual contract for checkups and service; suggested that I maintain the contract with them. When I called to renew the contract, the receptionist was very rude and lacked any gratitude for my attempt to maintain the relationship. They offered no loyalty discount (as the previous owner said they would); simply mailed me a contract and bill, with no explanation of the services they would provide. I scheduled the initial checkup for Monday morning at 9 AM. I was prepared to go to work late, in order to meet the technician and get a better understanding of the service contract. At 8:45 AM I noticed a missed call on my phone. The message was from the technician letting me know that I missed my appointment! I immediately called back demanding an explanation; as I was sitting on my living room couch waiting for a knock on the door. The receptionist told me that their policy is to call before arrival, if the customer doesn't answer the phone, that is considered a missed appointment. The technician does not knock on the door, nor does he allot a grace period until the actual appointment time. At this point I was furious. I was not appreciated as a customer. I took time off work, and waited around all morning only to find out the technician is too lazy to knock on the door. Not to mention the company has no remorse for their poor service. Customer service is worst than Comcast, and that is saying a lot. Needless to say, I did not reschedule a checkup; and they have lost my business forever.

Response from B&B AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING SERVICE COMPANY
For as long as I can remember, B&B has had the policy of office staff calling the customer prior to dispatching the technician to the home. This does two things. First, it lets the customer know that B&B is on the way to their home and secondly it helps B&B operate more efficiently by not dispatching a service technician to a service call only to find that the customer is not home. There are just too many service requests during the summer months to allow this to happen. I would like to make it clear that the technician would not have been sitting outside the customer's home being too lazy to knock on the door. Our office staff makes these calls prior to dispatching the technician. The B&B office service personnel are instructed to tell each customer that B&B will call when the technician is on the way and that a response is necessary. Given the opportunity to show this incident was an exception rather than the rule, I am sure we could redeem ourselves, however at this late date, I certainly understand should we not be allowed this opportunity. I can only apologize for the breakdown in communication, and thank you for your comments. Sincerely, Thomas J. Deimler Vice President / General Manager

Not bad, not stellar but solidly good.
Description of Work: Serviced oil furnace and fixed its humidifier. Although under service contract, parts (not included) seemed a very expensive since they are Carrier and Aprilaire. Got estimate on new natural gas furnace but it was only 85% efficient and rather expensive so we won't be buying again from them. Having a service contract is very convenient and they are very responsive. Seem to be honest and candid.

Woke up to minor flooding in downstairs closet with carpeting, adjacent to laundry room where AC/heating unit is located. The heat pump was defective and water had spread into the closet. Called B&B and at first they said they couldn't come for quite some time, then called back and said they would arrive shortly. Thank goodness because I had called several other businesses on Angie"s List - one said they couldn't do the work and others did not answer their phones. The B&B representative installed the new part in no time. They will always be my first call for problems with our AC/heating equipment.

Just moved into our house last year, and Band B was the company the previous owner had been using, so I renewed with them. They came out and serviced the AC/heating units. My only concern was the filters - they replaced two filters, and charged me $224 and $205 for them (total of $429 for filters alone), but when I looked online later they cost $30-40 each online (total of $70). I called and asked why they could charge 7 times the price, and the manager said they couldn't and quot;give them awayand quot;. I would have expected a markup of 30-50%, but not 700%. The service itself was fine, people seemed nice on the phone -- but with this price discrepancy, I'll plan to switch companies next year.

Response from B&B AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING SERVICE COMPANY
This is in response to the member comments regarding his air cleaner replacement medias. Any "in-home" service company has tremendously higher overhead costs in comparison to someone that can simply maintain a retail website for a monthly cost of about $30.00 to $40.00. Many costs have been incurred to get a skilled, licensed technician with a stocked service vehicle to your home. Just like any other business, overhead is mainly what dictates the selling cost of our parts. On October 15, 2012, I called this customer and left a detailed voice message stating that since he was unhappy with the cost of the replacement medias, I proposed that if he was able to get the exact replacement medias and return them to our inventory, then we will refund him the price he paid B&B for the medias in full. As of October 26, 2012, I have heard no response to this offer. Customer service is very important to B&B which is why we extended this offer to address the concerns of the customer. We were told on the phone we would be called once the technician was on his way. He arrived without a call. Not necessarily a big deal! From the beginning, the technician was abrupt, pushy and hostile. He did quickly find the problem and explained it and asked if we wanted the outside coils cleaned. I wasn't sure so I called my husband to ask what he thought. The technician explained to my husband he would clean the coils on both our AC and heat pump unit as well as flush the drain tubes. we were both told the charge would be 75 dollars per unit. The subsequent cleaning took no more than 4 MINUTES PER UNIT. He even made me bring him our garden hose. All he did was spray the coil with our hose, he did not vacuum or straighten any fins. He did not remove the fan or top grid to clean the leaves and debris from inside. When I ask him why he did not, he sturnly said "you don't want to do that". Thus, we paid 150 dollars for him to wash our coils with the garden hose!! Then, when he created the bill, I noticed an addtional 20 dollar charge. When I asked him about it, he said that was for flushing the drain pipe which he claimed "my husband requested he do". So, not only did he not do a standard, thorough or professional cleaning job for this exorbitant rate, he also mislead my husband to believe the drain pipe flush was included in the price and led me to believe my husband had specifically requested this additional service knowing there was an addtional charge. Apparently, making 150 dollars for 8 minutes of work and the use of our garden hose wasn't enough of a con, he had to make an addtional 20 dollars by lying! ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE Both Tom and Adam came to recheck the system in a very courteous way. They spent about 2 hours on the job to make sure we were satisfied. We definitely appreciated their care about our satisfaction and will probably rehire them in the future...
Description of Work: Our AC unit quit functioning. The technician quickly diagnosed the problem as being caused by a branch that had obstructed the fan. He showed me how to press the reset button to restore operation. He then suggested having our condenser coils cleaned, and we accepted. As soon as they understood that we were unsatisfied, the head of the company and a technician came back to recheck the units and re-clean the outdoor coils at no charge. They also checked out a third system and provided a quote for repair (at no charge).

They are dependable and they call the morning before the appointment to let you know they are coming. I recommend scheduling the first appointment with them so you know when they are coming.
Description of Work: I have been using them for years and I have a service agreement with them for the furnace and air conditioner. They came out to do an inspection of the air conditioning system. They discovered that a squirrel had got in and ate the covering of the wires for the air conditioner and the furnace. Since it was a danger to have all of this wiring exposed, they ended up replacing the wiring for the furnace and air conditioner. The materials would have cost me $283.00 but since I have a service contract I got a 10% discount on the parts and I did not have to pay $650 in labor either.

Very prompt service, within an hour after I called which was on a very cold day. Figured out problem quickly and ordered a new circuit board to control fan. Waited in truck until part arrived and installed quickly. He could have left and came back later, but stuck around till part arrived via another truck. So whole job was done in about 2 hours.
Description of Work: Heat wasn't being distributed throughout house, the fan was not working. BB came out about 1 hour after call and replaced a circuit board. Cost was about $500. Also bought service contract for 260 which is probably high but includes 2 maintenance calls during the year. Also got new pad for humidifier, about $45.

While they may have skilled technicians, I don't feel like the company is being run right. It is good that they had the old records so they could check that I had already paid. I had to call them to come out.

When nobody came out I finally called and B AND B said they bought the air conditioning company out. The came out and did their Spring check, but I had to call first. They were going to charge me again, but I reminded them I had already paid. Another guy was going to charge me too. They agreed I was right. I would give them A's down the board. They are really good. The cost of the contract is reasonable, and you get a discount on the parts for repair work. Routine maintenance makes the contract pay for itself right away. They don't seem like they are trying to oversell services.
