Description of Work: A-1 repaired a leak in a roof. They did very good work, was very professional and timely. They followed up as requested. The only thing I think they could have done a little better was a full inspection which may have reduced my overall cost because they would have found the true source of the issue earlier in the process. It took three times to find the true source of the leak. However once it was fixed, there were no more issues.

Description of Work: Kanga Roofing did a good job. The roof leaked after they did the work, and they came out and continued to fix the roof until the leaking stopped. They gave me a three year warranty/guarantee, so I am confident that the roof is fixed and if it leaks again they will come back and make sure it stops.

Description of Work: Bought Big Deal on 10/12/14. Called the provider in the winter. They could not put the insulation in our type of attic (walk up and expansive). Turns out they can only do small attics which you cannot walk and store in. They were nice, but it was not clear from their ads that the service was limited to very small spaces.

Prior to the installation I received a call from the company advising me of the date and time the installers would be at my home. The individual who made the call was very professional, giving me the name of the installers, a description of their vehicle, and a time for their arrival. Approximately (1) hour before their scheduled arrival I received a call from the same individual advising that the installation van had broken down and that the installers would be approximately (1) hour late. Vehicles break down; so although I had to adjust my personal and professional work schedules to wait for the installers, I understood their dilemma. When the installer arrived I gave them some bottled water and they went right to work. I let them know that I was available if needed. Approximately (45) minutes later they advised that the solar attic fan was installed. Although I thought it a bit unusual, as the video and printed instructions on the manufacturer's website indicated that they would need access to the attic, I signed the receipt, gave them a tip (which I typically do), and the installers left the premises. After their departure, I went back to the U.S. Sunlight website and again reviewed the installation instructions for the exact model of attic fan that was installed. The installation instructions require the installers to cut a circular hole in the roof (13" in diameter) so it matches the dimensions of the solar fan. This is accomplished by entering the attic, driving a nail through the plywood and shingles between the rafters, and using the nail as a center point to avoid cutting the roof trusses or other framework. The installer is supposed go to the roof, tie a string to the nail, and use that as a center point to draw a circle to precisely fit the hole to the solar attic fan dimensions. Since none of this was done, I used a ladder to enter my attic and discovered that the installers had cut a square from the outside, rather then taking the extra (5-10) minutes to properly fit the fan using the readily available instructions. The work was sloppy, and they removed more of the roofing plywood than necessary (which is always a bad idea) since it serves as the supporting structure for the shingles. The installers were polite, but I am getting very tired of people (contractors) who are too lazy to a job properly. It is impossible to find a craftsman anymore (or people who take pride in their work).
Description of Work: I accepted one of Angie's Big Deal offers for a solar attic fan installation (roof mounted), which also came with a free roof inspection for $459.00. My roof was less than (3) years old so I was not as concerned about the inspection, however I was interested in installing a cost effective means of venting the excess heat from my attic. I went to the U.S. Sunlight Corporation's website and reviewed their video and printed installation instructions for the roof mount solar attic fan (model 9910TR). The installation was simple and straightforward. As the instructions indicated access to the attic space was required, my wife cleaned out her closet and waited for the arrival of A-1 Roofing Services/Kangaroof.

Response from A-1 Roofing's Kanga Roof
I am sorry that the homeowner lost confidence in our services, but he should not have because we abide by our mission statement which is " To create a win win situation for all involved." This means that the homeowner must win by getting first class service and their problem solved with an added benefit of a warranty. The technician must win by being fairly compensated for providing the service. Finally, the company must win by earning a fair profit to remain in business and to serve the homeowner should a problem arise with the repair or service that was provided. As far as the installation of the solar attic fan, the homeowner is describing instructions for the DIY("Do It Yourself") homeowner. We as contractors perform these tasks day in and day out. Our professionally trained technicians use specialized tools, techniques and knowledge that will enable them, the installers, to find the joist while on the roof, without going into the attic. Using these skills allows them to do the repair or provide the service in a faster and timelier manner than the DIY ("Do It Yorself") person. Addressing the issue of a square verses a circle being cut into the roof, normally the solar attic fan comes packaged with a circular template inside the box. However, on this particular occasion, none was present. As such, to ensure that the opening for the fan was wide enough, but not too wide, a square cut was placed into the roof covering instead of a circle. Because of this situation, moving forward, we always carry an extra template. Also, the homeowner is not to worry due to his/her 2-year workmanship warranty that comes with the installation of the solar sttic fan.

I purchased the Big Deal online and was called by the company secretary within minutes. There was a deadline involved with our repair, and the company was kind enough to send someone out on a Sunday. Maurice, a very pleasant employee, came out and took the time to do a very good job. The balance he collected was exactly what had been negotiated. We're very pleased and wouldn't hesitate to call them again and recommend them to anyone who asks. I'm very glad I joined Angie's List because our first experience couldn't have been better.
Description of Work: We purchased a Big Deal for siding replacement and a roof inspection. We found that the roof was fine and the estimator gave us a price for a roof fan, which we plan to have installed when we're able. The siding replacement didn't cover the specific repair we needed (a corner piece with insulation), so my husband and the estimator negotiated that job.

A-1/Kangaroof showed a high level of professionalism from the very start. They were prompt in my request for an estimate and very thorough in repairing the leak. When the leak then moved to another area not covered by the area they repaired, they came back and fixed that at no extra cost, essentially stripping the roof down to the wood around the skylight and resealing from the bottom up. All at a reasonable price.

We had problems with ice dams forming on our roof in one spot. This resulted in water leaking into the rooms underneath. The solution, we were told by several contractors, was to place a "ice and water" shield in the valley where ice seemed to accumulate. We had estimates from 3 different contractors and the estimates varied signifcantly $700 to $2000. After checking in with the Angies List, BBB and request for references we decided to go with A-1 or Kaga Roof. In general, the techician arrived on time to give the estimate and theirs was the lowest. They use a standardized form to provide an estimate based on the closest amount of work to be done. For some people the simple approach works well, but it does make it difficult to compare with a more detailed breakdown if you want to try a variation. In our case, we wanted to know the type of material to be used for the shield. Different contractors use either CertainTeed WinterGuard or GAF WeatherWatch. We wanted to try Grace's Ice and Water Shield. It took a couple of rounds of phone calls to figure out the difference in costs for different material and make sure that the incremental cost of Grace material was properly accounted for in the final estimate before starting the work. It would have been nice to have this revision properly documented prior to the begining of the job instead of having to ask for it. The person who came to do the work was different from the one who gave the estimated and he did come on the appointed day. The work was completed on time and seemed to be clean. Since it was in the area of roof not easily visible and not wanting to climb the steep roof in winter, we will just have to wait to see if it was done properly. At least they gave a two year warranty compared to one given by most other contractos. In general, this was a good experience with the company. The staff was very accommodating and not aggressive like some of the other contractors. They had good follow-up and polite manners.

Discovered a leak in my roof during a driving rain storm. I called A-1 Roofing and the person I talked to was very nice and professional. They were a bit backed up with appointments so it took about a week and a half to come out and write up an estimate. The person that came out to do the estimate was very professional. He was up on my roof, diagnosed the problem, and wrote up what work needed to be done in less than an hour. I scheduled the work for the next week. The actual work date was pushed back twice, once because the guy doing the work called in sick and the other time because of thunder storms. A-1 Roofing was excellent in communicating these changes in schedule. I felt that the delays were reasonable and only resulted in a 2 day delay. The day the work was done it was performed quickly and without any problems. Again, the employees of A-1 roofing were friendly and professional in every aspect of the experience.

Maurice was very professional; he brought me up on the roof to inspect with him while he was doing the initial bid, during the work he came and inspected, after the job was finished he called to check in and make sure we were satisfied and after the job when I noticed that a small portion of the screen on the fascia vent had pulled away (potentially allowing for bees or small birds to get into the attic), he personally came over within 48 hours and repaired at no cost. Our roof is small so workers were there for only one day. They were efficient and cleaned up well (I only found a small handful of nails that they missed picking up). I checked carefully before the job to estimate how much planking would need to be replaced and they did only replaced planking that was showing signs of stress (I was concerned about this part since its a variable cost in the bid). Overall, I was very happy with the level of service and the finished job.
Description of Work: Removed previous roof, replaced about 20 feet of planking, install 15 lb felt and 25 year shingles, install fascia vent at front of house, install chimney cap

This was overall a very good experience. They were courteous and polite, very informative, and clear/upfront about pricing. It was easy to schedule an appointment and they did a great job on the roof. There were some minor issues with punctuality due to the job before mine taking longer and oddly, they didn't charge me for several days after the work was done. But I was comfortable, and felt as though they were honest and hardworking. I would recommend them to a friend and would use them in the future.

Contractor was responsive, lowest bid of three, came on time, had to postpone because it was snowing, but then returned and completed work in one day. Could not see the repair after it was finished as it matched perfectly.
Description of Work: The contractor removed shingles from damaged areas, patched the underlying roof deck, and replaced all the removed shingles with new ones, matching the existing shingles. He also replaced a damaged gutter with a larger gutter.

I received a reply to my phone call rather quickly, as well as an estimate. They were prompt and kept me up to date if they were late or needed to reschedule. Overall work was finished as described in my estimate. The only reason they received a B in quality was due to the lack of clean up. There were still pieces of the old facia boards in front of our house as well as screws and nails.

One section of my house is prone to gutter problems. A recent addition of the "gutter brush" to the gutters has solved the summer problems, but as I found out after Snoverkill, not the winter ones. An ice dam formed and caused water to leak into the foyer. I called A-1 on Monday. Early Tuesday morning they called back and said they could come at 10:45 AM on Wednesday. At 9:30 on Wednesday morning they called to say they were running late and would arrive between 11:45 and noon. At 11:45 they were in my driveway. They cleaned the roofs and the gutters in the problem area and solved the problem. They finished the work quickly and asked a very reasonable price. The next time I need work done on my roof or gutter system I will be calling Kangaroof for an estimate.

I had a skylight on my deck that was leaking. The flashing was not done properly. They had to pick up the roof tiles around the skylight, replace the flashing and then replace the roof tiles. Due to the damage done, they had to replace half section of the plywood sheeting underneath. It is a locally owned company. I talked to the owner. He has a number of workmen who, I think, work independently because one time they contact with the owner and he assigned me to one of his workers. The rest of my dealings were with the gentleman who did the work. He came out and inspected what I wanted him to do. He gave me an estimate and a date when he would be back. He came on the day he said he would come and finished the work. He was here when he said he was going to be here.
