It was a painless experience, and quality work. Gene was great to work with, and walked us through each step. We did have one instance where the communication could have been better (missed a scheduled meeting), but otherwise was a pleasure, and we'd highly recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Replaced a 40gal and 50gal electric water heater with two 80gal electric water heaters. Replaced old compression tank (well water) with new compression tank and re-ran copper piping through basement.

My schedule was crazy this past month and Eugene and I worked our schedules together to find the best time for the drywall repair. The price was very good for the work and the repair and painting turned out excellent, which is really great since it's in a highly visible area. We'll repaint the entire ceiling some day but we can easily live with this until we are ready!

Painless from start to finish! Before starting this project we called 3 contractors, all of which are on Angie's List, and Gene was the only one who actually showed up to give an estimate and talk to us in person. Gene and his crew were on time every day, were neat, cleaned up at the end of every day, finished the job in the specified timeframe, and stayed on budget. After removing the drywall on the outside wall it was obvious there had been water leaking in from somewhere and the insullation was soaked. Gene, and his trusty sidekick Angel, determined the source of the leak was coming from the outside of the house and not from the inside shower. They investigated where the leak was coming from and fixed it which required added time and effort. It would have been easy to just ignore the problem and throw some Durock over it but Gene chose to do the job right and not take shortcuts. Gene's attention to detail was much appreciated and he made very good suggestions on matching stone for the shower seat, vanity top, and threshold. He also coordinated the replacement of the toilet tank and faucet fixtures from the shipper when they arrived damaged in shipment. It was a breath of fresh air to work with a contractor who actually did what they told you they were going to do, was professional, and one who takes a great deal of pride in their craft. Wonderful job and we will have him back to do our other bathroom as well.
Description of Work: Complete rennovation of small bathroom to include removing dated tile flooring and gutting all drywall except for the ceiling. Eliminated tub and converted to shower only. Installed ceiling light in shower, new toilet, vanity, sink, exhaust fan, medicine cabinet, etc.

Gene and his team served as the builders subcontracted by the general contractor we retained to remodel our bathroom. After we had a falling out with the general contractor, Gene stepped in and kept our project moving smoothly and on schedule. He was professional, and responsive and ended up serving as the de facto GC for our actual, absentee general contractor. His team was pleasant and efficient and very good at what they do. We were pleased with the result. Gene and his team at Stowe turned what could have been a contractor nightmare into a good experience overall. I'd never rehire that absentee GC, but I'd rehire Stowe to complete future projects.

Have you ever dealt with a general contractor that worked so hard that one night you had to tell him to go home and spend time with his family? If not, then you obviously haven't worked with Gene Sibley. In fact, we were impressed with Gene on his first visit to our home to evaluate our bathroom project. Where other contractors pointed out all of the negative aspects of the project, Gene responded with positive solutions to all of our problems. This positive approach to problem solving was the main reason we awarded the contract to remodel our bathroom to Gene. The positive experience continued throughout the duration of the bathroom remodel. Gene communicated with us on a daily basis to provide status updates and to resolve questions. Gene even phoned me one afternoon because he was concerned about placing the tiles surrounding the tub perfectly. Gene and his team were very interactive about all of the decisions that needed to be made, and frequently proposed new ideas. One perfect example was the placement of the custom mosaic in the bath/shower area. I initially wanted to place the mosaic in a location where it would be seen as you showered. Gene's assistant, Angel, thought it would look better underneath the bathroom window where it would be seen as you entered the bathroom. Angel sketched the new location of the mosaic on the wall, and showed up early in the morning to show me the layout of the mosaic and the tile. We went with the new layout and the mosaic became the centerpiece of the new bathroom as opposed to merely an accent piece. Thanks to Gene, the bathroom turned out perfect. We frequently comment that it looks like a bathroom from a magazine. We have already scheduled our next project with Gene, and we are looking forward to working with him again.
Description of Work: Completely demolished and hauled away the existing bathroom, including tile on a cement slab. Relocated and installed a new vanity, toilet, and cast iron tub. Installed the following items: new ceramic tile and a custom mosaic tile mural, a glass block window in the bath/shower area, washlet toilet seat, all bathroom fixtures, a wider bathroom door, and wood paneling. Painted the bathroom.

Our sump pump failed the night before "Sandy" -- within hours, Eugene and his crew had purchased materials, and was enroute to our home. Once they arrived they quickly removed all the water and installed a brand new pump. 30 minutes flat. Ready to go. We continue to be 100% incredibly impressed with Eugene and his team. On time, on budget. We love this guy.
Description of Work: Our 6-month old sump pump failed a test -- he completed a removal of the old pump, and installed the new one within 30 minutes.

We met with Gene to discuss a problem we were having with our Master Bathroom shower. Gene listened very carefully and had some great ideas on how we might be able to repair the shower and improve it. He made numerous suggestions regarding updates that were sound and reasonable as well. He was prompt (actually early but called first) for our appointment and followed up with us via email with pictures of work he'd done and with a detailed estimate. We decided to go with another firm but will keep Gene's information for future reference.

I would highly recommend Stowe Contracting and Gene for any remodeling project in your home. From the first meeting Gene was very enthusiastic and responsive. He always responded to my emails or texts or phone calls promptly. I chose his company over other contractors because it seemed like he truly wanted me to have a nice master bathroom. Other contractors were willing to do the job I asked for, but Gene took it to the next level and instead of a "nice" bathroom, I got an AMAZING bathroom! He took what I wanted and the budget I had to make the best bathrooms possible. He was very accommodating and kept me in the loop on every decision that was made. His staff was very friendly as well. Gene recommended suppliers of tile, glass and bathroom supplies that were high-quality products at a decent price. Everyone I dealt with was very friendly and helpful. Gene seemed to keep my budget in mind while getting the best products available. When there were issues, like a water-stained floor, he called me to discuss my options. He made recommendations but never pushed his opinion. I often went with what he recommended and didn't regret any decisions that were made. I am extremely happy with the work that Stowe Contractors performed at my house.
Description of Work: Gene and his crew completely remodeled my master bath. This included tearing up the vinyl floor and sub-floor and installing beautiful porcelain tile (that looks like slate but is stain resistant and durable), tearing out the drywall and replacing and painting the walls, taking out the old shower and tiling the shower and floor, replacing the toilet and sink vanity and replacing the light fixtures and installing wiring and switches for a heater/light/exhaust fan. They also remodeled the downstairs half bathroom. They took out the flooring and installed porcelain tile. They replaced the sink and toilet and painted the walls. The guest bathroom also had the walls smoothed out and repainted. They replaced the medicine cabinet and light with ones I already had. I am extremely happy with all of the work done. The work done was clean and done with care.

The experience with Stowe Construction and Gene Sibley was painless and easy. The work was finished when Gene told us it would be done and it was exactly as we wanted. His price was exactly as he originally quoted. Gene is an excellent communicator and very patient. He gave excellent suggestions of vendors and had a good knowledge of product lines. Most people find all the options a little intimidating and want to make sure they're buying good quality fixtures, tile etc without getting a bad price. We were able to reach Gene on the first phone call 90% of the time, and if he couldn't answer, he would always call back the same day. The quality and craftsmanship of his work are top of the line. The job site was cleaned up every day and very neat. There were a few changes after the work was done which was completely our fault (our original vanity that we wanted was too big, so we had to order a new one, which arrived 1.5 weeks later), but even though these changes required Gene and his company to come back later to install the vanity, Gene was never annoyed and he was understanding and patient with us despite our mistake. Gene also has an eye for what looks good in a bathroom and made suggestions that were helpful. Gene is an expert at re-modelling urban bathrooms that have difficult-to-remove concrete flooring. Many contractors aren't used to working on older (100 years plus) homes, but this is one of Gene's specialties. We definitely would use Gene and Stowe Construction again. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Gene Sibley and Stowe Contracting completely gutted and remodeled my bathroom. Here's what they did: DEMOLITION: - Removal of all old tile (ugly, 1950s pink tile). - Removal of concrete floor, which is a huge job because in old homes like mine (built in 1913) the original builder laid down 4 inches of concrete in the floor and walls which is about a ton of concrete that needed to be removed. - Removal of existing tub, vanity, toilet. - Removal of all light fixtures, mirrors, etc. - Removal and capping off of old radiator. - Removal of old galvanized plumbing under bathroom floor - Removal of skylight. CONSTRUCTION: - Installed all new floor and walls. - Installed heated flooring - Installed all new tile - Installed toilet in a different location from original, which required re-routing plumbing - Installed vanity and inset wall mirror in a different location from original, which required re-routing plumbing - Installed new tub, faucet and shower fixtures - Added ceiling vent fan - Installed new skylight, including rebuilding skylight ceiling column - Installed all new light fixtures

Eugene got my kitchen/living room renovation back on track. After a terrible experience with my first contractor on the project, Eugene took over and finished the job on time and on budget. He and his crew were always punctual and did terrific work; Gene has an incredible eye for detail and will catch all those little things on the punch list before you even notice them I hope to work with Gene/Stowe Contracting on all my renovation projects in the future, and I would highly recommend him for anyone looking for a quality, reliable home renovation expert.

Stowe Construction -- Gene Sibley, Angel and Olgen -- what an amazing team! They were reliable, on time, and most appreciated-- very clean workers. The work areas were left clean at the end of each work day.Great communication -- Gene would let us know the work plan for the day and would follow-up with a nightly progress report. The attention given to detail, the prompt execution of all tasks, and Gene's willingness and initiative to order/and pick up materials when needed -- made it easier on us as customers and kept the work flow going. Easy to work with, cooperativerative --willing to change with your ideas; professional enough to suggest when needed. Stowe is the team for us! We have already scheduled them for more work in September! Although we use Angie's List for everything , ashamedly, we have never taken time to comment, but this time, we had to be sure to call Stowe Construction's (Gene') excellent work to your attention.

I would HIGHLY recommend hiring Gene for any home renovation project. He and his team were extraordinarily detailed and organized throughout the project. In preparing our contract, Gene talked us through each step that would need to be taken in order to complete the process. We planned the renovation so that we would always have full use of one bathroom. His projections for how long it would take were accurate and it only lasted a few days longer because of unanticipated issues like the need to level the floors in our master bathroom (very old rowhouse = no true right angles anywhere).Gene and his team started exactly when they said they would. Every morning, we would discuss the plans for that day and he would go over any issues that required our input. Almost every evening, we would get a call from Gene asking how we liked that day's progress and if we had any questions. They were extraordinarily clean, always using dropcloths and vacuuming to ensure that the process did not interfere with our daily lives. The few times issues arose - we wanted the toilet paper holder installed one place instead of another, we wanted the shower pan installed at a diagonal instead of a right angle - he completely listened to us, understood what we wanted, and made the changes with no complaining whatsoever. Other contractors might have been annoyed, but he was not at all. Both bathrooms ended up GORGEOUS. Although we selected the tiles and fixtures, Gene had great ideas -- the backsplash in our master bathroom came out of his desire for the connection between wall and sink to appear seamless. Gene and his team installed niches in both showers that really improved our storage situation. Gene is the unique contractor who has a sense of design as well. He made great recommendations, and was happy to dialogue with us about our design choices.Gene also did extra work for us that was not part of the contract. A shelf had fallen in our living room and he reinstalled it free of charge (it will definitely not fall now that he actually located the studs and installed it properly). He painted the hallways outside the bathroom and closed up holes that had previously been left there when our HVAC guy moved the thermostat. He also repaired the skylight in one of our bathrooms, spending an afternoon on our roof in the hot sun (this was not part of the contract). When the bathrooms were done, we were so happy with Gene that we hired him to replace some tiles in our backyard and kitchen and hiring his team (Angel and Olgen) to paint the baby's room and our halls and ceilings. Gene was also very sweet on a personal level, getting us a baby present on the last day.
Description of Work: We had a complete renovation of 2 bathrooms in a row house. Both bathrooms were completely demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. The guest bathroom is tiny and required a small wall to be knocked out (between the toilet and the shower) to make it feel less cramped. The plumbing for the bathtub was in that wall and all needed to be relocated. We converted the tub, which was 3/4 size, into a rain shower with a custom glass door and wall. We replaced the old toilet with a more efficient one and replaced the sink and flooring to reflect the more contemporary style. The master bathroom required all new drywall and for the floor to be leveled before any of the renovation work could start. We replaced the old green and yellow tiles and sink (relics from the 1970s) and replaced the old yellow bookshelves which had been used for storage with contemporary cabinets. Both bathrooms got medicine cabinets to create much-needed storage space in our tiny row house. And everything was repainted, with new lighting installed in both bathrooms as well.

Gene was willing to do any and all work I asked of him when asking for an estimate. He gave me a good estimate of what the services would cost and stuck to that number once we finalized the list of tasks to perform. He showed up on time with 2 of his crew workers (Angel and Olgen). I walked him around the house to show what the specific tasks were which he then explained to his crew. While Gene was not here to do the work, he did check up on the status of the jobs, and apologized for it taking longer than his original estimate. Angel Hernandez was terrific to work with along with his coworker Olgen. Angel would stop to answer any questions I had, asked for my opinions before making permanent changes such as cutting drywall or placement of TV mount. He seemed to always be in a good mood and smiling, even after working 8 hrs each day. Angel is a top notch installer. The recessed lights he installed did not even need any drywall patching, since the circles he cut in the ceiling fit perfectly for the cans. He measured everything very precisely, such as the floating shelves I wanted to be spaced out evenly in a staircase design. Angel also was able to install a modern pedestal sink quickly. He also removed an electrical outlet behind the TV area and Olgen did a great job with drywalling and painting any patches. Lastly, the crew did a great job of protecting my stuff in the areas that they worked, making sure to cover the floors and stairs with cloth, and using plastic sheets to cover the furniture. At the end of each day, they cleaned up and left the place in a manner I can actually use it until the next day. My house looks much better with the upgrades thanks to Gene, Angel, and Olgen! I would recommend Gene and his crew to do any handyman work you need at a great price. if you want a job done right, go with Gene and his crew. Another happy customer, just like the numerous others on Angie's List!

Mr. Sibley and his team did a great job. Mr. Sibley was professional, responsive, and proactive from start to finish. Provided a timely and accurate estimate, started work on time. Mine was not a rush job because it was a second bathroom so work was done over period of about 2 weeks. Mr. Sibley provided me status updates on the job and the days he would be working. Work area was always left in neat and clean manner. i was very pleased with the outcome and would use his company again.

Gene and his crew did an excellent job on what many people may not realize is a complicated project for both contractor and homeowner. Gene helped with the selection of cabinets, vanity tops, fixtures etc, but we directly ordered most items ourselves. We also did our own shopping and selected the tile, which led to some minor finish problems because some of the tile was not available in bullnose pieces, allowing Gene to work some magic to make the edges look good. Overall his workmanship is excellent, his attitude cooperative, and his prices reasonable. Gene's crew, Angel and Olgen, also did high quality work with a great attitude. At the end of each day, the dropcloths were gone, everything was cleaned up and stowed, and you could hardly tell there was work going on (except in the bathrooms themselves of course). Gene follows up on minor issues after completion and wants to make sure you are satisfied with the job.
Description of Work: Stowe Contracting (Eugene Sibley) redid two baths in our house; a master bath and a powder room. All the tile, vanity tops, cabinets, toilets, fixtures etc were replaced, and the rooms were painted.

I hired Gene Sibley and Stowe Contracting to remodel my basement, putting in a studio apartment with full bath and to remodel my first floor powder room. In every respect, I was incredibly pleased with Gene's performance and the results are beautiful. I am thrilled with the work he did for me and he is my go-to guy for all future work. My family and friends have also been impressed with his work, and have retained Gene to do remodeling work for them. In the planning phase, Gene was very creative in coming up with ideas of how best to use the space. He had ideas that had never occurred to me and that resulted in a far more polished product than I originally imagined. Gene is also cost conscious and will use his creativity to work within your budget, suggesting alternative ways of tackling problems. He will get as little or as much involved in materials selection as you want him to. Gene helped me lay out the kitchen and then I went to IKEA to get the kitchen cabinets. One of his workers assembled IKEA cabinets in a past life, so he was able to jump right in and assemble my cabinets. Gene found a piece of granite for the countertops that had been miss-cut for another job but worked great for my space, saving me money and allowing me to the use granite. And it goes beautifully with the cabinets. Gene's system is to purchase the materials needed for the job, provide receipts and then you reimbursement him, passing on his contractor discounts and no market-ups. For the carpeting in the basement, Gene brought several samples of carpet that he thought would work with the floor tile in the kitchen area. One was perfect, and I ended up buying the carpet over the internet. It was delivered to a dock in Baltimore but not problem. Gene has a great carpet installer and Gene arranged for him to pick up the carpeting from the dock and bring it to my house. These are just a few examples of Gene's fine performance. Gene and his workers are very skilled. They do beautiful work, paying attention to the smallest detail. Gene has a good eye and in some ways is a perfectionist - he can't stand it when something has been done subpar. Gene made many suggestions as we went along for dealing with typical basement issues, all of which worked well. He added trim and details that gave the apartment a level of finish that I had not expected. It looks great! Gene did a similar excellent job on the powder room, tearing out two layers of old wall and floor tile, installing a new floor, vanity, light fixture, etc. Gene and his crew are always on time, and they always without fail clean up before they leave at the end of the day. Gene's workers are delightful and I always felt comfortable having them in my home. And Gene was always accessible, making himself available for consultations at times that fit my hectic schedule. Gene provides excellent value for the money. He is honest and his pricing is honest. He is reliable and dedicated - a true professional that I highly recommend to you!
Description of Work: Remodeled my very old basement putting in an apartment with kitchen and full bath. Remodeled first floor powder room.

There are a few minor things that still need to be done, but I have every confidence that they will be done in a timely manner. Overall the condo looks refreshed and attractive.
Description of Work: Renovation of a very small condo bathroom in an old building with concrete walls (that had no studs or heat). The pictures will not do justice to the both the changes brought about and the quality of the work done. Gene was wonderful to work with as it is was my son's DC condo and I live in Philadelphia. Consequently there were many decisions that were made by telephone. In addition to the bathroom he finished a lot of work that had been left unfinished by the "Do It Your Selfers" who renovated the kitchen in 2010. The cost included finishing the kitchen, installing a back splash, painting the whole apartment, sanding and refinishing the floors and installing a more substantial apartment front door than the hollow core door that had been there. It was a very reasonable price to pay for the amount and quality of the work done. Gene anticipated problems before they occurred, thereby avoiding things that might have happened. He used my suggestion for heating the bathroom (an English product that is not well known in the US, where central heating is almost always available) and had a consultation with an electrician to make sure that the proper electricity was available and could be installed. Gene said that he enjoyed meeting the challenge that this project presented.

Description of Work: Gene did an excellent job installing all new kitchen appliances. We were very particular because our wood floors had just been redone. Gene was very detail oriented and made certain to communicate with us about any issues that were unique to our kitchen.

Eugene ("Gene") Sibley is The Man! He, Angel, and Olgen are a terrific team. They get major points with dust and dirt mitigation -- cleaning up each day and being careful with the rest of the house while working. Gene is a true professional and a good craftsman. He cares about getting it right and making sure that the customer is satisfied. He is a good communicator, telling us what to expect each day, making follow up calls from home or on the road to make sure that everything is satisfactory. We had to be out of town during the first week of the project, unexpectedly, due to my mother's death, and Gene kept us in the loop, calling to ask any questions to make sure he was doing what was expected and to give us a heads-up for any problems encountered and to get our approval before proceeding. He also has a big heart. When we returned to town, he had a beautiful plant and a condolence card ready for us. Gene is patient, flexible, and good at resolving problems. He will order and pick up any nededed material and provides receipts for reimbursement. And, he is pet-friendly! He is reliable. Once the job started, he and the crew were on the job each day until it was completed. They finished on schedule and then came back to do some touch-up and work on a short punch list. I can't recommend Stowe Contracting highly enough!

We wanted our brick fireplace and hearth covered by tile. We selected the tile and the company installed. For the horizontal hearth, Eugene first laid a smooth surface and came back the next day to cut the tile, lay it, and gout. He also took down the old mantel and brickwork that supported it. Tools were set us in the garage and special care was provided by the contractor to cover the hardwood floors. Following the work, the contractor clean up everything so that one would never know he was there. The tile is beautiful and we are very pleased.
Description of Work: We remodeled our fireplace and began by having tile installed as a surround. Eugene Sibley did the work and we are most pleased. Eugene was enthusiastic, prompt, and very knowledgable. He obviously has much experience and was able to do the job in a relatively short time and at our convenience. The price was comparable to similar work we have had done and other tile work we are aware of. This was a completely gratifying project and Eugene set us off on the right track. We definitely will consider this company for future projects. We highly recommend them. By the way, Eugene took special care to cover our hardwood floors and cleaned up perfectly behind his work.
