At first the job was much smaller and cheaper of course. However when removing the carpet in two consecutive rooms it appears that the floor was not level ---since this is a house built in 1860-70 it was not surprising. Removing the first floor, we discovered 2 other hardwood floors which needed to be removed a well and they rebuild the entire floor from the transversal beams --- at this point we were looking directly into the basement. This was not in the first quotation: removing two extra floors and building a new hardwood floor in these 2 rooms, so we got a new quote, which was reasonable and we went ahead with the work. Leveling the floor was equivalent to lower the floor of several inches, and so the baseboard and the walls literally were not touching the new floor in one of the room. This had to be fixed as well and so the basement door. They painted the new baseboards and the new basement door and retouched the walls. The work was performed diligently. They worked long hours, 8:00 am to 8:30 pm often. The bulk of the work was done in 6 days. They had to come back another 1.5 days to finish, and another 2 hours for the final touches. Gerber will listen to you and do as well as he could to please you. Of course, if it is not in the original quote, you will have to pay extra for materials and labor, which I found very reasonable overall.
