Ken showed up on time to review and discuss our project needs and was very professional. The estimate was sent to us as a contract via e-mail and we received a discount to perform the work at the same time on our neighbors home. The crew showed up early on the scheduled day and completed the work on the two homes in about eight hours. The plumbers did not break our concrete sidewalk, like others did to neighboring homes, and everything is working fine. There is a three year guarantee on the work done by and on pipes and parts installed by Ken Griffin Plumbing.
Description of Work: The polybutylene (PB) pipe connecting the county's fresh water line to our home needed to be replaced. A trench was dug along the sidewalk to the county curb. A hole was drilled into the foundation wall of the basement, then patched and sealed. Plumber furnished and installed 1” copper pipe, connected to the county connection, then relocated the existing water meter assembly to new location. Plumber installed new turn ball valve and pressure reducing valve onto the water meter assembly, then ran copper pipe from the new meter location to the existing cold water pipe. Plumber capped off the cold water pipe at the old meter location, cut the old plastic water service pipe below the floor level, then installed a concrete plug into the floor. The rest of the original water service was abandoned in place.

We had several other plumbers come in, but Ken Griffin was the one who had the most information for us. He was professional. The work he did for us was refitting, pipe soldering, and then he ended up replacing all of the water pipes in a huff, because we had the old polybutylene pipes(the great tubing that gets brittle). He gave us the estimate, broke all the cost down, and explained the cost of every piece of work. That is why we went with him.
Description of Work: He did the water piping in our house.

It went well. He showed up within a couple of hours of my initial call. Tried to unclog the drain with a hand operated rotor, but that didn't work and he had to get the big one. It turned out that the drain pipe was deteriorated and cracked, so he replaced it. After that I was thankful that I didn't try to do it myself. Separately, he replaced a broken hose bib on the outside of the house. All-in-all, very pleased.
Description of Work: Unclogged an extremely clogged kitchen sink on the day after Thanksgiving. Also had them replace a broken hose bib outside.

I called Ken Griffin Plumbing on Wednesday and was able to schedule an appointment for Friday morning. They gave me a 2 hour window that the plumber would be coming. They called Thursday night to see if they could alter that window to an hour earlier on the same Friday. That was not a problem and actually worked better for my schedule. Friday morning I received a call to let me know that the plumber was on his way to our house. I REALLY LIKED THAT TOUCH. When the plumber arrived I showed him the four items that needed to be repaired. He worked efficiently, neatly and and was very professional. I would definitely call this company again.
Description of Work: We had a bar faucet that leaked, a tub and shower head that dripped and a copper pipe with a pin hole leak in it under one of our vanity sinks.

The sump pump failed the next time it rained after it was installed. The entire basement was flooded. I called them for emergency service and they sent over the same person who installed the pump. He couldn't figure out what had gone wrong. They replaced the sump pump but did not pay for the damages to the basement. They wouldn't return my phone calls for two days after they replaced the pump while they were trying to figure out whether or not they would be insured for the basement damages. They realized they weren't insured for the damages to the basement so they told me I should call my insurance company because it was not their responsibility. They told me they weren't responsible for the damages because they found a pebble in the sump pump and that had caused the failure even though the technician who came out never actually found anything.
Description of Work: They replaced my water heater and sump pump.

Response from Ken Griffin Plumbing Services Inc
The member did have our company replace the water heater when it leaked and the sump pump when it didn't work to remove the water from the leaking heater, causing water damage in her basement on April 23, 2008. Between May 8th and the 12th of 2008, Maryland was deluged with 6.15" of rain, with 2.20" of rain on May 12th alone. During this time all homeowners noticed that their sump pumps were working hard to keep up with the many inches of rain which fell in a short period of time. She called at 11:00 pm to report that the well pump was not pumping the water out and that the basement had flooded again. She specifically told us that she felt she could not submit another claim to her homeowner's insurance company for flood damages to her basement just a month after the last flood. As a matter of fact, she hadn't even gotten all of the damages from the first flood taken care of when this one happened. We had sent our licensed plumber over at 11:00 pm to investigate the situation. At that time, he replaced the pump and told her the office would contact her the next morning, then left and continued on to help other customers. I opened up the sump pump the next morning to see why it was just humming, and why the impellers weren't turning. When I took off the "impeller housing," I noticed a small pebble/rock stuck up inside of it. The pebble/rock could have washed into the sump pump crock with the huge volume of rain and lodged itself, preventing the impellers from turning to operate the sump pump and keep the water discharging back outside. I called the member and told her what we had found. I dropped off the pump so that she would have it to show her insurance adjuster. I told her the pump didn't fail because of negligence on our part, nor did it fail because it was an inferior quality product. It failed because the stone lodged in the pump as a result of natural causes. She contacted Gould's, the pump manufacturer, the Howard County Plumbing Inspection Office who both agreed that the pump failure was not the result of our workmanship and that the pump, pump company, and Ken Griffin Plumbing were all very reliable. They had never received any complaints about our company. She also contacted a representative of the Maryland government system, similar to the Attorney General's office, to inquire about our company and determine who was responsible for the damages. They informed her that her homeowner's insurance company was the correct company to process the claim and address any issues that resulted. They did not see that our company was in any way negligent. It is unfortunate that she had two floods in her home so close in time to one another and it is understandable that she wants to blame someone for the situation. However, we did politely and professionally respond to her needs between 11:00 pm and 12:00 am and replaced the pump to help remove the water that had accumulated and reduce more damage while she screamed and carried on to the plumber who had already put in 16 hours of work and had another 3 hours ahead of him. She never paid us for the emergency service call or replacement pump, and canceled the credit card charge for the water heater (which was not affected) as well as the sump pump. We responded to her questions and concerns with return telephone calls as quickly as possible given the time it took to contact all parties concerned. The member chose not to respond to our company once she got all of her information and realized that we had behaved responsibly and helped her to the best of our abilities. We waited several weeks to have the credit card charges reinstated and were never paid for the emergency call or replacement pump.

Excellent work. Initially found that subfloor was not level, causing the toilet to not seat properly and leak from the base. Since we were going to do the floor anyway, we opted to renovate the whole bathroom. Ken arrived to sketch out the basic dimensions, and then we met with his wife (Kathy) to pick out all the specific options. She was very helpful at providing suggestions and was able to order most items at a reduced cost. Their estimate was at least $3000 less than other "kitchen and bath" places we considered. We didn't get much lead time on starting---Kathy contacted us the day before and said they were ready to go! Once they started it took only 12-13 days to finish. They did mistakenly leave out an area in the drywall for the medicine cabinet and had to adjust the vanity height at the last minute; however, since we had already painted, they re-painted the whole bathroom, ceiling included, at no charge. They were on-time, cleaned up after each day, and delivered exactly what they promised with no hassle. I would use them for any plumbing-related renovations----fair, honest, and reliable.
Description of Work: Remodeled master bathroom. Removed old laminate flooring + acrylic/fiberglass shower stall and old vanity. Tiled floor and shower + 1 return wall. Installed new vanity and frameless glass shower door with new plumbing.

It went very, very smoothly. They provided us with a detailed written estimate and used quality products. They came when they said they would and always called us if they were running late for some reason.
Description of Work: They completely remodeled our downstairs bathroom. It had severe water damage in the flooring - a big hole in fact next to the bathtub. They replaced the flooring and sub flooring, put in new tile, a new bathtub and shower fixtures, toilet, and light fixtures. They replaced the tile around the shower wall too.

I actually just had this done on Monday. Everything was just fine. I really like the plumbers there. They are very knowledgeable and very kid friendly. They are happy to have the kids watch what they are doing and explain things to them as they go along. The only problem I have is when I tried to have them do bigger items, like a neutralizer system and remodeling, they were not very reliable. The plumbers though are great.

They were just a little slow getting us the estimate but that was minor. They were prompt in scheduling the work, showed up right on time with two guys and everything they needed to do the work. They were very careful to run the line in such a way that it wouldn't be in the way of anything, and did not stick out like a sore thumb. They returned promptly to make the final connection, and charged exactly the estimate. We were very satisfied.

Ken Griffin is the consummate family-run business. They have pride in their work and stand behind the job that they do. The staff is smart, courteous and clean up when done. They make it a priority to arrive on time and are one of the few contractors who call ahead to let you know they are on their way. It shows their respect for their customers that they don't expect them to just sit home and wait. We have been unlucky with the plumbing installed in our home prior to our purchase of the home. We have had several serious problems including an upstairs bathroom that nearly fell into the first floor due to improper installation. Ken Griffin has done all our plumbing work for over 6 years including replacing the upstairs bathroom. There have been instances where they have had to redo work, and I think this could have been avoided at times with better advance planning. They are always receptive and responsive, however, so any problems are corrected immediately.
Description of Work: Emergently shut off broken water heater valve that was spraying all over the basement. Installed flue-vent gas water heater, but it would not vent properly to the outside. Removed said water heater and replaced with high efficiency power vent (to exterior) gas water heater. Returned after county inspection to cap off old water heater's connection to the flue.
