It didn't take long for Eric to figure out and fix the problem with an outdoor spicket! Everything works now.
Description of Work: An outdoor spicket that was installed prior to last winter had stopped working. I turned the valve in the basement on and could hear the water discharge - but the water never reached the outdoor spicket.

Another family member was here to greet Mike when he arrived. He was very professional. He explained all that he did to me when I came home. I feel he took his time and did not rush to complete the work.
Description of Work: Cut wall out where it was leaking. The pipe was out of fernco so it was leaking into the basement. Replaces existing pipe with a longer piece. Checked work to ensure that leak has stopped. Left the area neat and cleanly swept. Replaced an old laundry tub faucet with a new one purchased by me. He had to drill an additional hole in the laundry tub to accommodate the additional hole of the new faucet.

Overall very professional service. Gregg initially came out to give the estimate. He was one of the only plumbers we got estimates for that gave us details of the process of installing/extending the gas lines and the process of getting permits and working with the county to come back out for inspections. The estimate came to us either the following evening or early the next day (again before the other plumbers). Office staff along with the plumber doing the job were very professional and knowledgeable answering in detail all my question regarding the work being done. I would definitely call them again for any repair (and to install my gas dryer when I purchase it in the future).
Description of Work: I need my gas line extended from the middle (basement) of our home to the kitchen and laundry room. Also had them connect the new stove to the gas line in the kitchen.

I had a very positive experience with Mahon Plumbing. My bathtub had not been draining properly and when I called them at 2:30PM in the afternoon they informed me that a technician could be at my home by 4:00pm that day. This was such a relief, since I had the day off and did not have to wait several days to address the problem! Tom arrived at my home for the service call and he even removed his shoes upon entering without even being asked, I thought that was very respectful. Not only did he do a thorough job fixing my plumbing problem, he really took the time to explain to me what he was looking for and what steps he was taking to fix my plumbing once he assessed the situation. I now will be buying new hardware for my bathtub and I will absolutely be calling Mahon Plumbing to install the hardware for me. I highly recommend this company and a big Thank you to Tom as well!
Description of Work: Checked plumbing in bathroom tub, checked pipes to bathroom from basement drop ceiling, unclogged drain, discovered that bathtub hardware was leaking and showed me.

I had called approx. 6 or 7 different companies to get me a quote on fixing the leak. Mahon's quote was higher initially but with the Angie's list coupon, they came close to the average price of rest of the companies. However, they offered to use copper pipe and add 10 year warranty on parts and labor in case of future leaks on the line. Mahon were also quick to reply by email and phone calls for all the million concerns i had before starting the job Mahon had 3 people work on this job, and they were all very professional and surprisingly enthusiastic about work. They arrived on time and went to work right away. The line replacement, although a bit difficult went fine. In all it took them around 7 hours to finish they job. They also cleaned up the garage, driveway and the road pretty well once they were done. I am extremely please about the quality of work.
Description of Work: I had a water main line leak with water coming out of the front yard. We were planning on just plugging the leak, but ended up replacing the line since the leak was not isolated close to the valve.

They were very professional. They called after inspecting the problem to discuss the possible causes and costs of repair. They called when they returned to fix it. Their price was below those of other vendors. After digging a 20 foot trench they repaired the ground so that the work was barely visible. They offered the listed discount even after I had forgotten about it. I was very pleased with the entire job.

At the estimate on 9/27/11, the project was fully discussed. The generator would be located within approx. 10 feet of the propane tank access cover, making the task relatively simple (short runs). I clearly stated that I was not interested in saving a few dollars on the cheap Maxitrol regulators commonly used but not very reliable, especially in cold/snowy outdoor situations. Mr. Mahon agreed to use a Fisher regulator (I agreed to the higher cost) and confirmed an $800 price to do the job. I felt the price was very fair and agreed to have the work done, especially considering the company's good ratings on Angie?s List. The work was to begin in a ?few days,? but I didn't hear anything for nearly 2 weeks until I called and reminded them. On 10/11/11, the work began by a Mahon employee who looked at the site and told me the new line would be run from the existing line where it enters the house and run along the exterior siding to the generator. I asked about the underground run and he said he was not told to do that. To his credit, he called his employer and asked, but was told to continue with the exterior connection and run the new line along the house. I was a bit miffed at this, but agreed. The gas connection was made and yellow lp gas hose was run across the house siding to near the generator. There was about a 2 week delay in getting the work finished which I again called about. I was told the regulator took time to obtain and hadn't arrived yet - but, the very next day, the same employee showed up at my door unannounced with a regulator and finished the install pre-inspection phase. However, the regulator installed was the very Maxitrol I had requested NOT be used and no explanation given. These Maxitrols are readily available locally and online for about $20 and there is no reason I know of why a 2 week delay should occur (further delaying the actual generator company install as well). The fact that I specifically asked for a different regulator - which I agreed to pay for - was ignored. This install required County inspection before the generator company could make the final connection. At the inspection, which occurred on 10/24/11, the inspector pointed out 4 issues that needed correction, including 2 issues with the Maxitrol regulator. One was that it did not have proper weather protection and was subject to hazardous vent blockage. I immediately reported this to Mahon Plumbing and my ongoing concern with the regulator. I was assured all would be fixed. A week later on 10/31/11, the same employee came back to fix the issues, but still left the regulator unprotected from weather/vent problems and claimed to be unaware of the issue. The next day, 11/1/11 the generator dealer returned to make the final connection and start the generator. The technician explained to me what the weather problem was with the regulator and that it would work in the interim until being fixed or replaced, so the startup was completed. That same week, I called Mahon Plumbing for the final time, explaining that the startup had been accomplished BUT that the regulator was still out of code and was still the wrong brand/quality. I was once again assured that they would stand behind their work and was again told that they would (finally) order the Fisher and change it out at no additional cost to me and would be in touch with me soon to do the work. (Note: the Fisher and similar regulators are readily available online to anyone for delivery within 3 days.) Since 11/7/11 (approx. 6 weeks), I have not heard another word from Mahon Plumbing (I write this on 12/18/11). As I no longer have any confidence in them to do as they say or follow up given their past failures or to act until I call yet again, I have decided to simply end my business relationship with them and pursue a different company to make changes to this installation. I went to a well known website for these installations that is frequented by professional installers all around the country and posted some photos of my installation. Several installers pointed out these same flaws from the photos (I just asked for general opinions and DID NOT identify Mahon as the installer). One person explained the various problems in the photos and added "get a new plumber." Since I have already given Mahon Plumbing several opportunities, that is exactly what I am going to do. UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE Reference the Reply by Mahon Plumbing dated Jan 09, 2012: In reference to the reply by Mahon Plumbing, I wanted to add my comments on errors of fact and implication. While polite and probably well intentioned, the reply changes some facts in my report, ignores others and makes incorrect implications. One fact is that the install was left with outstanding code violations as noted and no commitment to fix them. Another fact is that I, as the homeowner, coordinated this install with the Generac dealer and Mahon Plumbing in concert and well in advance. This is contrary to the implication that I didn't follow a proper timeline and/or act as a subcontractor who didn't comprehend parts delays. The generator was purchased directly from a reputable Generac dealer/installer who recommended Mahon Plumbing to complete the gas line portion of the job. This is not quite the "homeowner as individual subcontractor" stated in the reply, but a planned and coordinated dealer contract job from its inception. Despite another implication in the reply, all service appointments were coordinated and scheduled in advance and I was on site for ALL stages, including the County inspection where Mahon Plumbing's install failed code on several issues. The comments on the regulator brands (Maxtor vs. Fisher) simply do not square with what I was told on the phone when I brought this up. I also checked with various plumbing parts suppliers and the Fisher regulators were reported as readily available and in much less time than the 6 weeks that Mahon Plumbing couldn't seem to locate one, nor tell me about. There was never any mention that the Maxitrol (installed out of code) was ever meant as a temporary measure and it was always meant as permanent until my final phone call to inquire. Note: I always had to be proactive and call about issues -- I was never directly contacted about any delays, problems or code corrections by Mahon Plumbing even after notifying them. On my last contact with Mahon Plumbing by phone (again initiated by me), they agreed to "correct their mistake" and "stand by their work" and get a Fisher installed within code - no comment on fixing the existing out of code install. Another 6 weeks passed, again without contact (implying that Mahon Plumbing needs nearly 2 1/2 months to obtain a readily available part). There is more here than a claimed breakdown in communication, delivery times and inferring blame on me for not following procedures and timelines or understanding delays. While I appreciate yet another offer to make things right, I simply do not have sufficient confidence in the company at this point and decline their offer to try again. Others are certainly free to judge for themselves based on what they read here. I have gone elsewhere.
Description of Work: My project was to have a whole-house 20kw generator installed which required 2 companies: one (the Generac dealer) to install the actual generator and connect all electrical work and the other (Mahon Plumbing) to make the required LP Gas connections from my underground tank to the generator. The work to be done by Mahon Plumbing was discussed in advance on 9/27/11 and included connecting the gas line from the propane source to the generator, obtaining permits, following/meeting local AA County code, and installing a specific Fisher brand gas regulator between the source and the generator via a short underground run. The price referenced above was after applying a 10% Angie’s List discount (quote was $800, final cost was $720).

I can understand the Member's frustration and would like to apologize for the delay in material delivery time. There is a particular lengthy timeline for homeowners to follow if they are acting as their own subcontractor for gas home generator installations. Homeowners need to coordinate all service appointments with the generator supply company, electrical and plumbing contractors, and be on site for numerous County inspections throughout the process as per each areas code regulations. We apologize for any miscommunications between our office and the installation of the specific regulator that you requested. Our supply house informed us that Fisher regulators were on back order and we would contact you when its available. Unfortunately we cannot control the supply and demand of parts and we did source out to other companies for the Fisher regulator and were told the same from each company about the back order. Our plumber installed a Maxitrol regulator until the Fisher regulator arrived so it did not hold up the others for this generator installation process. Our intention was to install the Fisher as soon as it arrived in our warehouse. I do feel we could have kept the Member more up to date with the backorder timeline regarding the regulator delivery. Thank you for your feedback and the opportunity to serve you. Mahon Plumbing would like the opportunity to complete your gas line installation.

I can't say enough good things about Mahon. After repeated bad esperiences with other plumbers -- no reply, no show, attitude, halfway work -- I was very wary. They were my first Angies plumber (got my money back on the subscription)! First of alsomebodydy answered the phone and was very professional in setting up an estimate. Then -- amazingly -- Mr Mahon actually showed up! Was actually waiting for me! Was very knowledgeable and frank. The estimate arrived the next day and work was scheduled. I was prepared to be disappointed but the whole experience lived up to the way it started. The plumber, Joe, was very competent and reassuring -- I knew he would stay until he got the job done right. He also had a great sense of humor and attitude. His helper was also hardworking and polite. When I came back to see the finished work I found that they had done everything they had been asked to do, and just the way it should have been done. Now I know I've found a great plumber.
Description of Work: Ran new line and outlet for sump pump. Repaired and reconnected clawfoot tub waste and supply (after tub had collapsed and damaged plumbing). Reset stove gas line to permit stove to be pushed back to wall fully. Installed proper sewer cleanout cap in back yard.

In response to your review we would like to note that Mahon Plumbing arrived for a free estimate the day you called on Friday 9-9-11 and was greeted by the homeowner with a new pair of wading boots so we could get into the basement to access the flood damage. The homeowner informed us that the local fire department previously pumped out some of the water for them since the water was getting up so high and home sits atop an underground natural spring. The home owners’ septic system also failed and sewage backed up. As a courtesy, Mahon Plumbing called a Septic Company for the homeowner. They came out Friday night and pumped out homeowner’s sewage tank. At 530pm that same day our crew arrived at your location. We pumped out approximately 15-18 inches of water with gas powered pumps with four inch discharge hoses, emptied out the entire contents of your basement then dried, swept and cleaned the area so it could dry out overnight. On Saturday morning 9-10-11 our crew jackhammered and dug the basement floor for pit installation since homeowner did not have a drainage system in place previously. We installed a Zoeller cast iron sump pump, jackhammered and installed a new drain line, tested everything and our crew finished up your job on Saturday evening. Two weeks later the owner calls us on 9-23-11 late Friday evening during another severe rainstorm and states water in the basement. Our on-call service technician called back within 10 minutes and owner requested a larger pump. Our technician was ready to come out that evening but homeowner requested he come out on Saturday 9-24 instead. Saturday morning 9-24-11 our technician checked the pump and found the Zoeller sump pump working properly but due to the regions unusual severe storms and the large amount of rains the sump pump could not clear water fast enough. Mahon Plumbing pumped out the basement and installed a sewage pump and along with the existing sump pump left in place since it was working properly. This job was an enormous residential undertaking and we recommended for the homeowner to get other estimates to compare pricing for this large project. Mahon Plumbing stands behind our service offering fair pricing. We are pleased to have helped you out with your severe drainage problem.

In anticipation of what had become an almost yearly blockage from roots and branches in the sewer pipes on my property I called three plumbing companies for estimates to replace the entire system. ( By coincidence it turned out to be the same day the pipes became blocked.) Mr. Mahon's Office Assistant, Anne Marie promptly returned my call; when I explained my initial reason for calling and what was happening with the pipes, she immediately set things in motion so that someone could come out to clear the pipes. That was Joe, a patient, kind young man who worked for at least two hours in the 100 degree weather snaking the pipe three different times with the same result each time: the snake kept coming up against an obstruction. I asked if it were possible to have the pipes replaced in a reasonable amount of time; Mr. Mahon came within the hour, assessed the situation, gave me a price and said they could begin the next day. They came exactly on time and began the dig. When I expressed concern over my neighbor's well planted ground which is right next to part of the sewer system they assured me they would not harm that ground - and they didn't! I cannot remember each man's job, but I want to thank them by name: Keith, Elmer, Mike, Mark, Tommy, and Chris. They were all courteous, careful over the property and thorough. When the sewer system was in place and they were working to replace the dirt, etc, they actually placed top soil, grass seed and hay over the entire area where they had worked. One of them very kindly offered to remove a wild tree that was growing next to the foundation. I was pulling weeds as they were working; I went into the house & when I returned they had picked up the weeds and carried them off in their truck. The entire job - from the snaking to the landscaping took approximately 3 to 4 days (cannot remember which) and each day Greg Mahon, the owner was here overseeing and checking with me. I haven't the words to do justice to Mahon Plumbing - maybe the best way to describe the company and ALL its employees is that I would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for superiority in workmanship and attitude. Thank, everyone at Mahon Plumbing, for making a potentially terrible experience so easy for me!
Description of Work: 1. Snaking the sewer pipe that leads to the County pipe - THREE SEPARATE TIMES - trying to get past a suspected obstruction. It turned out to be impossible because the pipe on my property had totally collapsed from roots and branches which had grown into it. 2. Replacing the entire sewer system on the property. 3. Re-placing the dirt dug up, and then covering the entire work area with Top Soil, Grass Seed and Hay.

When Mr. Mahon was at my house for the job of replacing the enitire sewer system (see separate Report on that) I asked if the water heater in the laundry room could be moved to the opposite wall, thus affording enough wall space to cut a door in the vacated wall. In his "Can Do" manner he said "Yes." (I have asked other plumbers and home improvers if that were possible and all said it was impossible.) I also asked for a new water heater, new laundry sink w/faucet, and replacing of bathroom faucet. Eric came within a few days, at the appointed time. There was much pipe work to do. He worked quietly and efficiently. He is another example of Mahon Company's employees; courteous, pleasant , organized. As with the men who worked on the sewer system, he left the areas clean and, I must say, somewhat neater than he had found them. He also did some work above and beyond the call of duty: Mr. Mahon instructed him to place stablilzers on my new washing machine and its platform - at no charge. What of stroke of good fortune that I found Mahon Plumbing on Angie's List!

Just wanted to say I was impressed with the professionalism and hard work from Mahon. Also, I appreciated the respect I received - often we women are "talked down to" when we ask questions of males in male-dominated professions such as plumbing. I instead received informative, clear answers. And thanks to Angie's list coupon - I was able to save $300.

See my story above. (sorry, I have these reversed!) Services needed appear below.... The reason I was calling for another plumber is because my current plumber had already showed me, via a tape that he had made of my sewer line, that he thought it was broken in several places and would need to be replaced. My regular blumber had been snaking out my sewer line approximately once a year for several years. However, the last time he did this, in three weeks time, the problem returned and was worse than ever! Water was backing up into my tub and toilet and actually coming up through the floor in my bathroom and running out into my hallway and saturating the rug that was there. My regular plumber told me to get several estimates on what it would cost to replace the line and that he would match their price if he could. Bottom line was....he could not match the price that I got from this company! I may even change plumbers!
Description of Work: I called Mahon Plumbing to come out and give me an estimate to replace the sewer line in front of my home. They were one of four companies that I called to get estimates and they were the most affordable. The person who called me back, as I applied on line, was very polite and professional. They gave me a date for the next day since there were already two companies coming on that particular day. After I called back to say that I wanted them to do the work, I was given a date that was just a couple of days out. They arrived on time....actually a few minutes early which was fine. The men did their work well with minimal disturbance to my lawn. In fact, they actually went above and beyond just replacing the line. The trench that they dug was actually a few feet from my house but before they connected the new pipe, the gentleman asked me to flush my toilet twice to check on the flow of the water that was coming through. Long story short.....in his opinion, the water was not flowing as it should have been. So he ran a camera back up through the pipe that went up under the house and discovered that there was a clog of roots and other debris at the joint which was directly under the house and about 6' back from where he had made his cut. He used his snake machine several times before he was successful in freeing the clog. Had he not done this, I would have had to call them back because I would still have had the water backing up into my home! After that problem was taken care of, they proceeded to connect the new pipe to my current one. They allowed me to see what they were doing and explained everything to me as they went along. They filled in the trench, tamped it down well with the backhoe, covered the dirt with good topsoil, seed and straw. They even watered it for me before they left! I was very impressed with their service and I would not hesitate to call them again in the future. I will also recommend them to anyone who asks about plumbing services! Miss Gardner in Severn, MD

We had a sink that had been repaired by a previous homeowners with a flexible, accordion-style plastic drain pipe, presumably because of improper alignment of the pipes when the sink was installed. The sink would drain slowly, and was impossible to snake because of this pipe. We asked Mahon to remove the plastic piece and install real pipe, and to install a new faucet we had purchased. There was a small miscommunication with the office -- I thought the plumber was arriving at a specific time in the morning, but apparently there was a few-hour window of time for his arrival. He arrived at the very end of that window, but since I was working from home that day anyway, this was fine. The work took about two hours; at one point, he had to go out for a part. He was friendly, and the work was done professionally and well. We've had no problems with the new faucet and drain, and clean-up was very minor -- a couple smudges here and there. We're glad to have a working sink, finally. Rates were reasonable. We would use this company again.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced pipes under the sink, installed a new faucet.

We had a minor plumbing emergency when we disconnected a water pipe and the hot water shutoff was broken. I quickly checked Angieslist and found Mahon. I picked them because they were close by, had 24 hour emergency service, and (most importantly) had good ratings and reviews. I called and received a call back within about 20 minutes, and they were able to fit us in about half an hour later. Service was fast, courteous, and affordable (esp. considering it was an off-hours service call)

The hardware purchased for the shower/tub required a complex installation. Mike took the schematic home to study in advance of installation. He stayed with it working out the details. Blended plumbing installation with countertop & tile installation.

This is a long review, but I felt obliged even though I rarely write reviews. Every once in a while, you encounter a company that it is a true pleasure to work with. That is the way owner Greg Mahon and Mahon Plumbing are. They are not the biggest company around but they are definitely the best I could imagine and they are equipped to do more than most plumbing companies. They do all plumbing and also excavation for sewer lines which most plumbing companies cannot do. I have a 60 year old house and do a lot of home repairs myself so I know the basics of what I am dealing with when I call a contractor. I used Angie's list (my first time) and called 6 companies. 4 of them called me back and came out to give me an estimate. The bigger companies send an estimator, not the guy who will do the work. I prefer to deal with an owner, as this helps ensure there is no miscommunication and I think those companies tend to be more efficiently operated. With Mahon plumbing, the owner came out to give me the estimate and was there during the entire job. He was accommodating and fit me in his schedule and showed up on time. He made sensible suggestions on how to best do the work and explained them to me. It was clear he knows his business and he wants to do the job right, not cut corners. The price was very reasonable and lower than most of the others. My advice is to get several estimates because there can be a big range between estimates from different companies. He sent me a contract quickly and scheduled the work to fit my schedule. The owner then showed up with a team of 3 other guys right on time and they wasted no time doing what was needed. They have the right equipment to do what they need to do, so the job goes smoothly. The work was done with 100% quality. I was there during the work so I watched what they did. The owner paid attention to every detail which made me confident that it would be right, and it was. They had to dig up my yard to lay in the new pipe. After the new pipe was buried, they filled it in well and raked out the entire area so it was smooth. This was in the middle of winter with frozen ground. In the spring, I will just need to put a little grass seed out with no filling in holes and ruts like I have experienced with other contractors doing similar excavation work. They cemented around the hole in the wall for the pipe on both sides and parged it with tar to prevent any leaks from rain water into the basement. Inside, the plumbing work on the new waste line was neat and clean. They installed the lines to ensure they would not block access to my crawl space in the basement. All of the workers were friendly and pleasant. I highly recommend them for any plumbing work. I will use them again. In fact, now that I have found a company I like, I plan to call them soon to do work that I have been putting off for years to replace leaky copper pipes in my basement.
Description of Work: The waste line to my old septic tank had deteriorated and the tank was very old so I needed to abandon the old tank and move the waste line to feed into a new septic tank I had installed a few years ago for an addition. They installed a new line to my new septic tank outside, ran the line in through a basement wall and replaced the interior waste line from several fixtures to tie them into the new line. They capped the old line to the old septic tank. This required excavation work outside, punching through a cinder block wall and putting in the new waste lines. After calling a few companies, I found out most plumbing companies don't have the equipment to do excavation work. I needed someone who could do the whole job.
