Phil with Maryland Piano was AWESOME! I contacted him on short notice to come assemble a Williams Symphony Grand II piano that I had ordered for a Birthday present. He drove out on June 26th and met my deadline for having it assembled in time for the surprise! Thanks again Phil! You were a lifesaver! I couldn't be more pleased. Hearing Phil play the newly assembled piano was an even greater treat! Maryland Piano definitely has all of my future business.

The move went great. These guys arrived within the appointed time frame and quickly got to work. The piano was on the ground floor and had to be moved out the through the kitchen and out the door, down two steps. The destination was approximately 6 miles away and had to travel down two flights of steps, up four and down seven to reach the apartment. The whole process took about 30 minutes from the time they originally arrived to when they set the piano in the apartment. Quick and efficient is what I would call these guys.

Maryland Piano Service was very responsive to my calls setting up this job. It involved coordination with the seller, my daughter (who was receiving the piano at her house) and me, and at no time did we feel we did not know what was going on. Although my daughter and I were not present when the piano was moved onto the truck, the seller described how careful the movers were to maneuver the piano up a half-flight of stairs without damaging it or the house. I have witnessed enough piano moves in my time to know that you definitely want a specialist such as Maryland Piano Service to do this job, even for a smaller console piano. Don't try to do this with some strong friends and a pickup truck!

Unfortunately this happens from time to time. As you will note in the description of the problem we did return the call and [removed mbr name] was unable to take the call. While there is no "good" excuse for dropping the ball it does happen from time to time. I'm sure everyone has had the experience of playing "phone tag". It's no fun but it is a fact of life. I would have hoped that he would have tried again but that didn't happen and I will take responsibility for the lack of follow up. Usually we will give our email address out and have the customer send us all the details of a move or of whatever service request they have.. That way we can follow up when we are at the office rather than while driving. Our apologies and we hope to do better in the future.

They picked up the piano with great care and skill, returned it with no evidence at all of having been in a smoky room so close to fire, and have moved it several times since, each time with true professionalism. They came on time, and were efficient and swift each time. There was a period of time when I wasn't able to reach anyone to get the return scheduled, but Nancy, the owner, took such care to see that this was corrected, that I would recommend them without reservation. In fact, when the piano was returned, because i had no access to my many piano books due to the dislocation from the fire, she send the piano back with a large stack of piano books for me to keep. This was so above and beyond anything I expected, a real act of kindness and responsibility. My daugther always says you don't judge a company by whether or not it makes a mistake, but by what it does afterwords. I am deeply impressed with the professionalism of this company, the care they showed me at a very difficult time, and the warmth and kindness of all interactions throughout.
Description of Work: Maryland Piano picked up my piano from my home shortly after the fire in my house, so they could clean it, tune it and remove any smoke damage, and then move it to my temporary location, and ultimately back to my home. They removed all smoke damage, repaired a loose knob, and have moved it several times with complete care and efficiency.

The bottom line is that they have no respect for anyone else's time. I was told my piano would be delivered on a specific date and I took the day off to be here. When I called the day before to confirm the time, I was told someone would call me back. Nobody did. When I called again the folloiwng day I was told the piano was still at the refinishers and sorry they forgot to call me. I was FURIOUS. When I complained to them by email, they did not respond at all. Finally after having the piano for nearly 2 months they delivered it, but two of the keys were still chipped, the lyre wasn't properly prepared be replaced, and there were a number little chips in the wood that hadn't been covered or addressed by them. I was told they would call me to schedule a tuning within the next two days. Nobody called. I called them. Finally a week later Phil came back--two hours later than he had originally said but he did at least call to say he'd be late, and found a few other things he needed to come back for again. He scheduled for Monday at noon (That is today). At 12:45 nobody was here. I called them again. Oh, he was at another place and forgot to call me. Again. He finally arrived at about 2pm, unapologetic as always. The work that was done on the piano looks fine, though the $2500 price tag seemed a bit much for fixing some veneer---however, as I could not very well get a second opinion, I have nothing to compare it with. For the service I got, however, it was definitely not worth the price.
Description of Work: The piano was moved from a house in Owings Mills to their shop in Columbia. The move was fine, as far as I know, but when they checked on the piano they found a number of problems. This I certainly don't faul the company with. Anyway, many keys were chipped and needed to be replaced. The veneer on the sloping element of the case needed to be mended and the lyre was falling off. The soundboard was in good condition and it would only need one string replaced.

It is never pleasant to receive a negative review. And I agree it is not good practice to disregard the time of our customers. We've been at this a long time and from time to time this happens. It happens either because we have dropped the ball or it happens due to miscommunication. But I can assure you it doesn't happen because we intentionally disrespect anyone's time. When we do schedule appointments we always provide a window of time both for arrival and completion. It is not our practice to say we will be anywhere at a precise time. The nature of our business is that the time each job requires is unpredictable. It is our policy to give a range of time that we will arrive for a job; e.g. between noon and 2. That means we could arrive at noon or at 2 or anytime between. We appreciate all feedback and even the negative remarks will only motivate us to do a better job next time.

Called Maryland Piano to discuss prior and new work (tuning and voicing). Spoke at length with Nancy (scheduler) regarding planned work, to talk about the ballpark estimate we'd gotten verbally from technician (Seong) 2 years ago. Arranged work for a few days after first call. Nancy gave me her comprehensive contact info, said she would call me again closer to the date of service and if she didn't I should call her. I ended up calling her the day before and she seemed slightly confused at first about what job we were talking about but it ended up just being a name confusion. Schedule was confirmed with no incident. Technician (Seong) arrived at prearranged time, worked for 9 hours solid on two glasses of water. Explained and did prearranged work (he said he would voice/regulate the action first, which would require minor disassembly of the keyboard, so he would clean it too, then tune), called to my attention extra work that would cost extra (repairing the two hammers).while he did the work, and finished by 8 or 9 pm (he'd arrived around noon). I was impressed by Seong's technical ability, his thoroughness and the passion for technical accomplishment that he brought to the work.
Description of Work: Piano regulating (voicing) and tuning. Minor repair of two hammers, shaping of hammer heads, repair of and making uniform the piano key action (so that all the keys require the same amount of pressure to actuate). Tuning focused on the treble strings but also included the older, less tuneful bass strings. Evaluation of piano for more overhaul work. Technician recommended replacing bass strings as next piece of work to improve piano, but did not require it.

Called for an appointment and they were very helpful and responsive. The person sent to my house was punctual and professional. The piano was so out of tune that it had to be tuned twice and they didnt charge more than they initially said they would. Note: I am writing this after the fact so dont remember the exact cost but it was reasonable and I will use them again.

We hired Maryland Piano Service to move a regular upright piano from my uncle's house in York, PA to our house in NW Baltimore City, primarily based on ratings we saw here on Angie's list. And we were definitely not disappointed. They sent one of their managers out to take a look at our house, because we had considered for a while having the piano moved down in our basement or upstairs...in the end, we wound up just getting it moved into our living room...and they had no problem with that either. They were fine with us scheduling the move on a day when we could have someone at our uncle's house to let in the movers (as our uncle had to be at work). They came on time to our uncle's house, made short work of loading the piano into their truck, and brought it straight to our house in a timely fashion, placing it in the desired spot in our living room... all without a scratch on the piano. Our impression at both ends of the move was that they were very professional. Although this was probably one of their simpler moves, that they still did it this well is a credit to them, in our book. The price was right in the range they said it would be.

Wellll, um, Sigh....You know when it starts with sigh it ain't gonna be good. To their credit I will say the guy did do a fabulous job with the actual tuning, it's really great to have my old friend back again. However, here's the deal:... hidden fees. Nobody likes 'em, and that includes me. I did get the 15% discount for being a piano move customer, but the tuning serviceman called me up and said that the piano was so out of tune that he could bring it in tune, but he would need another visit to bring it back into pitch. Ummm, yeah no. Look, I'm not an expert in the field of piano tuning, but I see no reason why this can't be done in one visit. More generally speaking, if a piano tuning is stated to be X dollars then the whole job should be done for X dollars and not a penny more. If there is any possibility whatsoever that a job could cost more that stated, that should be explicitly stated to the prospective client before making an appointment, so one can make an informed decision. At no point of which I am aware, was I notified that the amount specified for the service could possibly be more, unless it was classified as an estimate and I somehow missed it, which I don't think I did. So in my opinion, this constitutes engaging in hidden fee tactics. And that stinks. However, the piano sounds good enough to me so I don't think I need that additional pitch adjustment anyway. All in all, good expertise, but in my opinion they're a little shifty.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT GOALS OF OUR COMPANY IS TO GIVE ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS COMPLETE, EXPERT SERVICE. WHETHER IT'S MOVING OR TUNING OR RESTORATION OUR GOAL IS NOT JUST TO DO THE BARE MINIMUM, TO "GET BY", BUT TO EDUCATE OUR CUSTOMERS AS TO THE BEST WAY TO GET THEIR PIANOS PLAYING AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE. GOOD, TIMELY, EXPERT ADVICE IS WHAT MOST OF OUR CUSTOMERS WANT. THERE ARE STANDARDS WHEN IT COMES TO MEASURING A PIANO'S PERFORMANCE. THE PITCH SHOULD BE AT A CERTAIN FREQUENCY AND THE ACTION SHOULD PLAY CONSISTENTLY. MOST OF OUR CUSTOMERS APPRECIATE OUR TECHNICIANS LETTING THEM KNOW WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO RETURN THEIR PIANO TO THAT STANDARD. EXTRA WORK IS NEVER REQUIRED. BUT, USUALLY THE GOAL IS TO HAVE A PIANO THAT PLAYS ITS BEST. AND, IF A PIANO HAS NOT BEEN MAINTAINED ON A REGULAR BASIS, EXTRA WORK WILL BE NEEDED. WE NEVER MAKE THAT A CONDITION OF SERVICE, NOR DO WE DO EXTRA WORK THEN SURPRISE OUR CUSTOMERS WITH A HIGHER THAN ANTICIPATED BILL, BUT WE DO GIVE OUR CUSTOMERS ALL THE INFORMATION NEEDED FOR THEM TO MAKE THE CALL, TO MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION. FOR THOSE CUSTOMERS OF OURS THAT CAN'T AFFORD THE EXTRA WORK, WE ALWAYS GIVE THEM A PLAN TO GRADUALLY RESTORE THEIR PIANO OVER TIME, ACCORDING TO THEIR BUDGET. WE BELIEVE THAT IT IS IN OUR CUSTOMER’S BEST INTEREST TO KNOW WHAT THEIR OPTIONS ARE. MOST APPRECIATE THAT. THE FACT IS PIANOS REQUIRE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. OVER TIME THEY WILL GET OUT OF TUNE AND OUT OF REGULATION TO THE POINT WHERE IT REQUIRES EXTRA WORK TO GET THEM BACK IN GOOD PLAYING CONDITION. THE FACT IS MOST FOLKS DON’T KEEP UP WITH THEIR PIANO AS OFTEN AS THE PIANO REQUIRES. AND THE WORK NEEDED TO GET A PIANO “UP TO PITCH” OR TO MAKE ALL THE NOTES PLAY, IS USUALLY MORE THAN WHAT’S INCLUDED IN A STANDARD TUNING. WE ARE ALWAYS GLAD; IN FACT WE WELCOME THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP OUR CUSTOMERS GET THE MOST OUT OF THEIR PIANO. FOR EXPERT ADVICE AND FIRST RATE SERVICE GIVE US A CALL AT 410-997-8388 OR EMAIL US AT PHIL@MARYLANDPIANO.COM. IT IS ALWAYS OUR PLEASURE TO HELP.

I'd say it went pretty well. They were punctual and did a good job. The only thing is that they were giving the hard sell about tuning, inquiring as to who our current tuner was, and would he come to Baltimore, etc. etc. Truth is I probably will have them do the tuning because they offer a discount for move customers, but still, take a hint, back off. The other thing is they don't like to work on weekends, which is when most professionals are home, so they charge an extra $100. I think they should recognize that customers may prefer to have it done on a weekend so they don't have to take off work. What are the 8-5 crowd supposed to do?

IT'S ALWAYS NICE TO HEAR FROM ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER. THE MAIN THING THAT SETS US APART FROM OTHER MOVING COMPANIES IS THE FULL SERVICE NATURE OF OUR PIANO BUSINESS. IN THE SAME WAY WE PROVIDE EXCELLENT, EXPERT PIANO MOVING, WE ALSO PROVIDE TOP QUALITY PIANO SERVICE. WHETHER IT'S TUNING, OR RESTORATION, YOU CAN BE SURE IT WILL BE DONE AT THE QUOTED PRICE, ON TIME, WITH EXCELLENT QUALITY. THE FACT IS WE ARE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT OUR BUSINESS AND ARE ALWAYS EXCITED TO TELL POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS ABOUT EVERYTHING WE DO. YES, WE LIKE THE EXTRA WORK, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY WE LIKE KNOWING THAT WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE THE CUSTOMER WILL HAVE A PIANO THAT'S IN BETTER CONDITION AND MORE ENJOYABLE TO PLAY THAN WHEN WE STARTED.

Things generally went very well. I called on Thursday in hopes that I could set up a move for that Saturday. The woman I was speaking to explained that they don't usually do weekend moves, but that she would see what she could do. She called me back later that afternoon to tell me that she had lined up everything and that they would be at my father's house at around 3PM on Saturday. Although they did arrive a little late, they were very efficient in both moving the piano out of my father's house and bringing it into our house in Silver Spring. They were nice to work with and were very clear up front about what the costs would be. I appreciated that they gave me a flat fee rather than a cost per mile or per hour as others had given.

Received a response to my e-mail inquiry, within 1 day. I didn't get additional quotes, since the price was reasonable and I needed some work done on the piano, in addition to moving it. Although, I didn't schedule the move until 10 months later, they were happy to honor the estimate, I had been given. When I was ready, I was able to schedule the move within one week of my call. The movers arrived promptly to remove the piano from its original location. When I called a week later, they said the piano was ready (see related TUNING report) and they were able to schedule a delivery, immediately. Fortunately, my remodeling contractor was on site at the original location, when the piano movers showed up to return the piano at the scheduled time. He directed them to the correct location and the piano was moved into its new home, by two obviously experienced men and a supervisor. Overall, a very satisfactory experience.

THE PIANO WAS MOVED SUCCESSFULLY, WITH NO DAMAGE OR DELAYS. HOWEVER, THE CONTRACTED MOVERS CAME TO MY HOUSE FIRST BY MISTAKE THINKING THE PIANO WAS GOING FROM MY HOUSE TO THE SECOND ADDRESS. Unfortunately we rely on the information provided to us about where the piano is located and where it is going. And, yes, when we spend extra time on a move because we have been given wrong information, either about where the piano is located or where it's going or anything else that requires us to spend extra time then there is an extra fee.
