He was a little bit late, but it was snowing so I wouldn't hold that against him. He immediately went to work and worked steadily for 4 hours. The deal was for 3 hrs., so we paid an additional $45 for an extra hour. Unfortunately, he did not notice that there was wallpaper behind the refrigerator, so we will need to have someone else remove that. I will confess that I didn't point that out to him. He carefully covered the floor and all of the cabinetry prior to starting and he did a good job of cleaning up afterwards. I would add that there was somewhat of a communication problem since I do not speak Spanish and was having trouble understanding his English. I was a bit surprised that the company sent us a list of items we were to purchase: paint rollers, sandpaper, wallpaper scorer and wallpaper remover being some of the items. We also provided the plastic to cover the cabinets. We've never had to do that before with other Angie's List painters.

Went near perfectly. Had a quote the day after initial contact, the job was done less than a week later. Only wrinkle was that the job was supposed to take one day but ended up taking two. The walls look fantastic, the house was left clean, and the workers were polite and communicative. I recommend wholeheartedly.

The work was estimated as a three-day job. Since we have a small child, we were insistent that they started in the morning and ended by 5pm each day. We were also under the impression that the work would be done on Saturday as they started on Thursday. The first day went without a hitch. There were two guys, one that looked to be in his 30's and one that looked a bit older, maybe in his 40's. The next day the older gentleman was replaced with a younger guy (barely 20) and he didn't appear to speak English. That was fine until the 30+ year old had to leave our home (and discontinue working) to get something that took him more than an hour to get back with. We occasionally check on contractors when they are working in our home. The first time I went up to check on the younger gentleman I knocked on the open door and entered the room. He appeared startled and rushed out of our bathroom. I found this odd but again he didn't appear to speak English and that was nothing to give someone a hard time about. Later the same day I left to run errands while my spouse remained in our home and when I returned I was shocked to see the younger gentleman outside throwing something (rocks possibly) at the master bedroom window on the second level. Presumably, this was to get the older gentleman's attention who was in the house working but this is unacceptable. I immediately notified my spouse and he spoke with the older gentleman and called the office to speak with Joel. Note -- After Definition Painting secured us as a client, you could never get Joel during the day by phone when you called the office and always had to wait for him to call you back. While they apologized, I was furious and embarrassed. We hired contractors that were throwing "rocks" at our window. We have neighbors and more importantly this could have caused additional damage! At the END of day two (Friday) we were told they weren't coming back until Monday, that they don't work on Saturdays. We called the office and couldn't get Joel but there was nothing we could do so we had to wait. On Monday they bring back the same 20 year old again and another gentleman. At the end of day three (not mid-way through the day, not even late in the day at the END) did they notify my spouse that they were not going to be able to finish the work until Tuesday. Again, unacceptable and not because the work wasn't finished. We understand that sometimes with contracting things get delayed. This was unacceptable because it wasn't communicated properly. Didn't they know they weren't going to be able to finish on Monday at 2pm, even 3pm? My spouse ended up having to call and wait for a call back again. They finally finished on Tuesday. Joel took off about $100 bucks for the trouble I guess. I give them a C overall since there isn't a B- or C+...

This review was completely one-sided. The customer cancelled the job, then re-scheduled later in the week. He still expected us to finish by Saturday (i.e. Friday evening) even though we lost several days. Then he was very upset that we didn't work Saturday, which I never told him that we would do. Our painter did toss twigs at the window, even though he shouldn't have, to get the attention of those in the house because the customer kept locking the door every time the painters left to get supplies in the van. I mean every single time. Honestly I don't understand such discrimination that we receive due to age. The funny thing is that older workers have more experience, but younger workers have more energy & physical flexibility. They both bring something to any kind of job out there. It's against the law to discriminate against age. In terms of not getting a hold of me, the owner...my office assistant answers calls in the office for scheduling but she gave the customer my cell phone number & he only called me once. So he had my number if he needed me, but choose to call the office for no reason. Thank you for considering the 'other' side of this situation.

We have used Definition Painting in the past and have always been very pleased with their work. The owner, Mr. Alverez, is very good to work with. He responded to my call immediately and his availabiluity was very flexible. I had to cancel the first painting schedule, and he was courteous and pleasant about this. I rescheduled and the painters arrived at the appointed time, covered and/or moved all of the heavy furniture, and did the entire job in one day. The painting crew was efficient, polite, and not intrusive. In one instance, one of the painters asked me if I would look at the ½ bath as he thought it might need a 3rd coat of paint. I appreciated that he brought this to my attention. When finished, they cleaned up the rooms, removed all of their materials and I was left with beautiful new rooms. I highly recommend this service and I will use it again for our next painting needs.

PLEASE DON'T HIRE THEM. I don't want to be hyperbolic, but my experience was terrible. This is why: 1. The contract said "2 coats of paint." At the end of the day, when they wanted to be done and not come back, the owner told me that "2 coats of paint" meant 1 coat of primer and 1 coat of paint. That was not our agreemen. In fact, he told me to buy 1 can of primer for each room, PLUS 2 can of paint. He did not tell me to have the primer tinted to match the pain. 2. In order to rememdy this, I had to have 3 screaming matches on the phone, and threaten not to pay them the remaining $350 balance. 3. They got paint on my stained wood trim and did nothing to remove or remedy that. 4. They left my home a dusty mess when they were done. 5. They did not bring their own vacuum, and had to use mine to clean up the dust created by patching and sanding holes. This ruind my vacuum. 6. They took my contract and receipt when they left and did not return either. This means I cannot use same if I wanted to pursue legal action, or simply refer to it for another purpose. 7. It took them 2 days when they said it would take only 1. 8. The painting is mediocre. The end result is not professional, and the color saturation is not good because they did not apply two good coats. 9. They did not do all of the trim they said they would, and I had to go over the trim after they left because it was not all painted, and most of it had only one coat on it. 10. They were generally unprofessional towards me. 11. I removed all of my outlet covers, etc., and had to put them back as well. They removed the AC vents and failed to put them back. If you don't own an electric drill, do NOT hire them. If you are a woman, do NOT hire them. I think part of the reason I had the problems I did is because they assume that women are push overs.

I've used Definition Painting once before at my mother's home and they did such a great job, I decided to use them again. Joel came out to the house to give the estimate and when I showed him the NEW windows that were just installed; he pointed out that they did a bad job and should fix it. He was right, but I really didn't know what to expect from the contractor who put the windows in. So Joel said that he would give me a separate estimate for just the windows and trim, so that if the contractor who did my windows, did not want to fix them, I could show him the estimate from Joel and give him that option. Ultimately the contractor had one of his guys come and and fix them correctly. What I appreciated was the observation and guidance Joel provided on the what to do about the windows. I really didn't know my options, so it was extremely helpful to get a professional input. At that time I called Joel & Karen to make arrangements to have the work done. We set a date and as usual they were here bright and early and set to work. Initially it was thought that it might take 2 days to complete, but a crew of 4 was sent and they were heads down right to work. VERY POLITE & PROFESSIONAL. They fixed the walls so that I wouldn't even know where the nail pops were. The window were FANTASTIC, the trim was meticulous. They did all the things mentioned and a superb job at it. I felt like I was in a new home:0) I have and will continue to recommend Definition Painting. Joel, Karen & the crew really are exceptional at what they do and sooooo EASY and pleasant to work with. Kudo's to Definition Painting; you really are a GRADE A business. Thanks again.

The owner communicated promptly via email to find a day we could agree on. He provided an arrival time window and a list of supplies I needed to have on hand. The gentleman arrived at the very end of the window and got to work right away. He was able to remove the wallpaper and begin priming. He cleaned up and replaced the vent etc. within the 3 hours. He was polite, self-sufficient and now we have a blank slate to start on the bathroom.

Great to deal with, responsive, professional. Did a great job and would use them again. My only complaint was one of the doors still had some dust on it so it got painted over, its not terribly noticeable but with just a little extra prep it could of been avoided. Overall they did a very clean job.

When the two men arrived late to our house they asked us if we had paint rollers!!!! They did not bring them with them. We then said we did not have them and one guy had to go to Lowes to pick some up and was gone for an hour. We had purchased the colors ahead of time and one of the three rooms painted was a bit light in my opinion so I asked them to apply a third coat to make it darker and they charged me extra for that. I told the owner that considering that they came late and without any paint rollers he should not charge extra for one of the rooms to get an extra coat, but he refused. He also had the nerve to tell me that if his men came unprepared, that extra hour the man left and went to Lowes was coming out of his pocket and that I should not be upset that they came unprepared. Finally, the finish was sloppy, with my husband actually having to remove paint marks from our door handles and door, and needing to repaint the trim on the walls white, since paint got on that too and was not cleaned up by the painters. We also had to paint an area around the sink in the bathroom which they missed entirely. Overall the walls now are painted, so they look better than they did before when they were white, but the finish is not smooth and rather bumpy at many places. The owner is hard to get along with and is not flexible. We will not be using these painters again.
Description of Work: While they advertise 3 rooms in this deal it actually ended up being only 2 rooms in our house because of the limited square footage allowed per room, so we had to pay extra for the third room.

Some deals include materials, while others do not. This particular deal did include materials, though not paint. My employees were confused & thought that this deal did not include materials, which is why they were not prepared when they arrived at the customer's home as they thought the materials would be there. So it was simply a mistake. This particular deal was not time based, as are some of the deals. So when one of them went out to buy roller covers, though at an inconvenience to the owner, we did feel apologetic. However, I cannot lower the price or include something not originally on the contract just because someone forgot their roller covers. It does not mean that I don't want to be flexible, only fair. The deal was for 2 coats of paint only, and of course we have to charge for the time it takes us to put a 3rd coat. If there were any touch ups that needed to be done, we always ask that customers call us back. I will ALWAYS return to do touch ups on non-time based jobs. I often return myself to do them. I do believe that my employees need to take more care to prevent them, which is something that I'm working on with them this year, but there are things that can be corrected. Thank you for your time.

Jimmy showed up on time, reviewed what work I needed and my expectations, such as all metal work (hinges etc) to be left unpainted. He gathered his supplies, assuring me that the three hours did not begin until his first paint stroke. He was polite, professional and worked steadily. He applied two coats of paint, without a misplaced drop or stroke. He cleaned up when done and instructed me on drying times. I was very pleased, especially when friends told me for $99 I wouldn't be able to get a professional painter to even show up for an estimate. Jimmy did an excellent job and I will definitely contact them for my next paint jobs!

I'm very surprised about this review, and it's the first I'm hearing of it. I cannot stress enough that I encourage any customer to contact me, Joel, as I'm the owner and manager of all of my employees. I do send foreman to the job site, but if there are issues beyond what the foreman can or appears able to do, I'm the only one that should be contacted. I can resolve any issue, and will do it personally to satisfy any customer. Though, if I only hear about an issue after reading a review, I can no longer do anything to help. Regarding the comment on age...everyone I hire is of legal age. Compared to myself, they are very young but the law states that I can hire anyone full time, 18 and over. None of my workers are 18, but some in their early 20s. They should not be discriminated against based on their age. Last, but certainly not least, I do apologize for the distress that this customer endured. I wish her luck with her future home projects. Thank you.

I purchased an Angieslist Big Deal from Definition Painting. Although I've spoken with the service provider, they will not be able to complete the service. Lack of availability and unexpected need for me to provide all materials are the reason for my request. It's understandable that I provide paint, but they asked me to provide essentially everything including paint rollers and floor coverings. I have never dealt with painters who asked that I provide such items. I was very surprised and disappointed.

I personally contacted Mr. [member name removed] on many occasions to discuss setting up a time to do this work. The day before the start date he emailed me stating that he had to re-schedule. Then, the very next morning he sent another email asking if we could work that day. I had already taken him off the schedule and sent my workers elsewhere. I did, though, ask if he wanted to re-schedule and received with no reply. The deal is very specific and mentions labor only, and company provides tools but no materials. I'm very sorry that this customer did not read the fine print. I find no fault in this situation. I'm just being honest. Sorry again.

This was an Angie's Big Deal 16 hours of drywall and painting for $499. The work they performed was average, regarding major drywall damage they repaired that, but did not repair other obvious damage nearby that was pointed out to them. They did not do a very good job of containing dust or clean up. I had to loan them a ladder in new condition that was returned to me splattered with compound, paint, and covered with dust--thanks! They also did not work the full 16 hours, but rather worked 15 and rushed out at the end of the job. (I mentioned this and they claimed they worked the hours). Finally, the company claims to be a local owned and operated company, but the truck they arrived in had South Carolina plates, so the local aspect seems doubtful. In summary, their work was "OK", but I would not use this company again, I'm sure there must be better ones out there.

We do appreciate this customer's review. It appears there was a miscommunication in terms of the amount of hours that the workers remained on the job. In speaking with the workers, I came to the conclusion that they did what they could in the time frame given. I did not know about the ladder and would have had the workers clean that or even replace it. Though, what strikes me even more is the comment about not being local. I have lived and worked in Maryland (DC metro area initially) since 1996. I started this company in Montgomery Co in 2005. I moved to Howard County with my now wife in 2007. My wife was born and raised in Baltimore. We live in Columbia with our small children and now have an an office in Jessup, Md. If one of my workers had S. Carolina plates, it was likely that he hasn't changed his registration or he borrowed someone's car. Everyone who works for me is local, as I'm only a small business. So, I don't think you can get any more local than that. Nonetheless, I'm very sorry to [member name removed] for the result of this job. Though, I do encourage customers to contact me about any problems that may occur so that I can solve them right away. Thank you.

I purchased a coupon from Angies' List for $450 for 3 rooms (each up to 12' X 12' in size). (Other details of the coupon were prepping, spot priming, 2 coats of paint, taping interior surfaces, drywall repair of small holes, labor, and inexpensive supplies like tape, spackle, and plastic tarps). When Joel arrived he informed me that the deal was for LINEAR feet, not SQUARE feet. The linear feet computation ends up being a much smaller area. The coupon -- as stated -- was FALSE as the consumer does not get 3 rooms of 12' X 12' prepped and painted. Bait and switch? You decide. I ended up having to paying him more. With the linear feet computation, Joel also does not include ceiling or trim in the deal... so the consumer ends up paying more for those areas to be painted. Overall, his workers did an "okay" job, although the rollers they used had been used multiple times and left little fibers on the walls.

I do appreciate this customer's review. However, the deals are very specific in terms of what they cover. If the deal states, for instance, paint walls only, then we do charge for ceilings and trim since they were not included in the deal. Customers are encouraged to ask questions prior to purchasing deals if they do not understand the fine print. I do hope to improve communication this year with all customers. That is why I hired a FT office assistant now, so I can hopefully prevent problems, such as this one, from occurring in the future. Thank you.

Did a great job, and cleaned up afterwards
Description of Work: I could not believe that we could get a painter for 8 hrs for this price. He did a great job in painting a bedroom in one of the Assisted Living facilities I manage, and did not pressure for any more jobs. I would definitely use this service or recommend it to anyone else.

They arrived on time. Two painter. They moved the items but didn't put everything back. They had upcharges for everything: ceilings, doors, and trim. I notice significant paint runs later after they were gone. I noticed they painted things without removing some of the fixtures (light switch covers, door knobs, etc). The did an ok job ... but I expected better, much better for the price. Greg

If a deal or estimate states 'walls only' then I will charge for trim and ceilings if the customers subsequently needs that work done too. I'm always straight forward with customers about what the works includes and does not include based on price. I encourage customers to ask questions. I always mention that we do not move wall hangings or breakable items. We help move furniture, though with caution. It is a liability for me if one of my workers accidentally breaks something, in all honesty. In terms of touch ups needed to be done, we can always return to do that if there is no time limit given. What I mean is that if you have a deal that allows for a certain amount of time (ex 8 hour deal for one day) and the worker communicates that he can only finish a certain amount prior to the end of that day, then we can only return if the customer purchases extra hours. However, if there is no deal only a straight proposal, then I will always return to do touch ups without question. That has never been a problem and I often return to do it myself. Please consider. Thank you.
