They did a fine job. They came a day late due to the rains. They did the job in one day and did not leave any debris in the yard. I love the roof because it is very beautiful. I also received a Christmas gift from them on my doorstep, which was a basket of cookies. The price was higher than other quotes but I was impressed by the way, the owner answered my questions.
Description of Work: I used them to put on a new roof.

I cannot say enough about Tom, his employees, and the quality and beauty of the job that was performed at our home. The roof was a necessary replacement, and the siding and trim more of a cosmetic upgrade. We really received tremendous value on the job. The house looks great, and the follow-up and attention to detail has been great. I highly recommend this contractor. I will definitely hire Tom again, and look forward to working with him and his entire crew.
Description of Work: Tom and his employees provided a total roof replacement. They also removed very old vinyl siding and replced it with beautiful cement board siding and PVC trim boards.

They were great. They were really excellent in every way. I was very pleased with them and their work. Previously, I had hired another company to do the work, but they did a terrible job. The roof was leaking and the water seeped inside my house. I can?t say enough about the good job that was done by Certified Inc. I spent around $3000 for the job. Their quote was very straightforward, with the assessment of the problem. They seemed to know what they were doing. Above all, the work done by them was great. They did a thorough clean-up afterwards. They were able to get the repair done quickly, which was great because of the weather and the water leak.
Description of Work: I used Certified Inc. for roofing work, a month ago. They replaced a good portion of my roof.

From start to finish, the job went well. My 17-year old house had original "builder grade" shingles that were beginning to degrade - pieces blowing off quite often and shingle repairs being done at least once a year. I figured it was only a matter of time until something bad happened (like a leak). I called Tom based on recommendations from Angie's List. He came out and gave me an estimate. I found him to be very straighforward and direct with the estimate. He explained the entire process very well and answered all of my questions. I selected the 25 year shingles. Within a few days after I signed the contract the shingles were delivered; Tom's crew completed installation the next day. (Cost included removal of old shingles.)

Four months after I received the estimate I called to give them the go ahead and had no problems. The work was scheduled. They showed up when expected. A 5 man crew carefully removed the old shingles and replaced a rotted section of wood and re-shingled in one long day. They were pleasant and professional and left the place neat and clean. I am very satisfied with the work performed.
Description of Work: I have a small 1920's bungelow style house with 2 roof levels and a detached garage. I called this company after reading reviews on Angie's List. I got a prompt response and an immediate written estimate along with an impressive folder of information on the company including copies of all Licenses, testimonials, material sample brochures plus a list of questions that should be asked and answered by anyone looking to have a roof replaced. I chose a 3 tab classic algae resistant 30 year shingle and their estimate was up to 35% less than some of the other companies I called.

I got an estimate from Tom several months prior to the actual work. Tom'a presentation was the best I've ever listened to. He explained to me what Certified was going to do and why. He gave me samples of the material he was going to use and references. I put his materials aside thinking I'll have it done in the spring. In Feburary, during a windy rain storm, half of the old roof blew off. I called Certified on a Saturday requesting a new roof. Tom scheduled the job for the first thing the following week. Tom told me two days to complete the tear off/install new roof. They completed it in one day, including removing all the debris from the blown off roof. They did a good job and it went well. There was a misunderstanding about the flashing. I thought it was part of the job and in the end, they installed it. They were expensive, but that's okay because I knew that going into it. The original job was great, but it took a while to get the problem with the flashing straightened out. I would use this company in the future.

When they came out to do the estimate, the owner of the company was able to give me an estimate on the spot, as he had done measurements of the roof using mapping software. They arrived on time. It took them two days to do the job, as there was about 1300 square feet of roof. They cleaned up after themselves. Additionally, they attempted to seal around the top of the chimney between the cap and the siding, which was above and beyond the call of duty. Additionally, they painted the flue and chimney pipe with black paint. After they were finished they cleaned up after themselves; I have only found one piece of the old shingles in the past month.
Description of Work: Removed two layers of asphalt shingles; replace plywood as necessary; installed 30 lb. felt paper, drip edge, new architectural grade shingles, and two skylights; the latter on the screened porch.

Made an appt for an estimate on Fri. On Thurs received a call asking if we could reschedule because they'd overbooked. I told them since it's just an estimate, I'd be fine with them not coming, but I'd find someone else. They told me someone would be out on Fri. He came out at the very end of the time window on Fri. He looked at the roof from the ground, pointed out some problem spots, and told me he'd give me a quote to replace the whole roof. I told him that only half of the roof has problems, so I was hoping to only get a repair job on what needed done. He told me it would be a huge hassle and a problem, but he'd run up a quote. I also asked about the flashing on the chimney, and he said that he'd add that into the quote. He never got up on the roof to look at it. He quoted $2,800 to do the entire back half of the roof and the chimney flashing, and an additional $2,100 if I wanted to have the front of the roof done as well. He was definitely pushing me to have the whole roof replaced.
Description of Work: Part of the back half of my roof needed repaired, and the flashing on the chimney needed replaced.

Response from Certified Inc
In our professional opinion this customer definitely needed a new roof. She had not taken care of the roof and she apparently did not want to hear the truth. She might not have liked what we had to tell her, but we would never do a repair just because the homeowner thinks that is all they need. We are ultimately responsible for the warranty on the roof so we have to make sure we are taking the appropriate steps to make sure that the roof withstands the warranty. As far as the appointment time, our representative showed up within the 1/2 hour time frame that the appointment was set for. We do not understand why she had a problem with that. He was not late.

We obtained four estimates for the above work. Jim came out to give us an estimate. He offered good advice on achieving our goals while minimizing costs. He gave us a detailed estimate before he left the site. The roofing crew came out the following week and completed the roof in about a day and a half. Although not contracted to, while doing the roof, they were kind enough to hammer in nails that had popped out on our old gutters. We were extremely impressed with the attention this crew gave to cleanup. They spent quite a bit of time, with a magnet in hand, combing the yard and shrubs for nails. The next day another crew came out to replace the gutters, etc... This took one day. There was a problem with the way the rake capping was done. We notified Jim who came out to see it and he agreed. His crew came out and fixed the problem a couple of days later. However, this crew amazed me when I looked up to see them, spray bottle in hand, cleaning smudges off the new capping. Overall everything went smoothly and the roof and gutters function well and look beautiful. Jim is very personable and professional, very easy to talk to. Both of his crews were very respectful and polite, clearly eager to please. There was one thing, however, they forgot to patch a couple of the nail holes in our siding where the old downspouts had been attached. (This took us about 5 minutes to do.) After the total job was completed we had about 5 minutes worth of clean-up to do.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced shingles with architectural shingles over house and garage. Installed new ridge vents. Removed and replaced gutters and downspouts with oversized gutters. Removed and replaced shutters. Recapped fascia and rake with new aluminum capping. Due to prior water damage the roof required 8 sheets of new plywood.

The contract was detailed and listed everything they would do and the material they would use. The roof was replaced in one day and all went well. There were no nails or trash anywhere in the yard after they finished. They even cleaned out our gutters! However, we never got a call telling us when they would show up. They just showed up at 8am one day. They missed a piece of siding we wanted fixed and they came back to fix it a week later, but again we weren't notified when they would come.

I first submitted an email on the Certified website requesting information. I received two quick responses; by both email and by phone from Tom Keehn. We set up an appointment and Tom arrived when he said he would. After surveying the roof, Tom gave us a written estimate for the work, outlined all of our options and answered all of our questions. Also, the package he provided included information on the company's licenses, insurance, and other recommendations. Tom even provided me a current address where they were working if I wanted to check that out. In the next couple of days, we had additional questions and Tom was available to answer those as well. After we mailed in the contract, we had a delivery of all the material on a Monday and the crew was here before 8AM on the Wednesday to begin work. The crew worked all day and finished the entire job by about 6PM. They cleaned up everything, we didn't even find any extra nails as they made sure the entire yard was clean. Several days later we received the bill and it was as quoted. And Tom was prompt in replying to a couple of additional questions I had after the job was complete. We were extremely pleased with Certified and would definitely recommend them.
Description of Work: We had our roof replaced. The work included replacing our skylight and two attic fans and we chose to upgrade from the 25 year shingles to the 30 year warranty shingles. As it turned out, they also had to replace a good bit of planking underneath.

Ref: Certified Inc. The owner, Thomas Keehn, Jr., who came to our Residence impressed us considerably. He had his presentation set up the best I have ever seen. He had many references, license documents, insurance documents, copies of awards, letters from happy customers, and many other documents all in a well designed folder. He explained everything they would do in detail such as removing the old roof down to the plywood decking. We are very impressed with the whole operation. When they put a small hole in the roof and we did not realize it had happened until they sent someone to temporarily repair that hole so it would not leak and cause major damage. They repaired this hole to my satisfaction and actually did a better job than I thought could be done. The crew they sent out has to be the hardest working people I have ever seen. They were professional and worked almost nonstop. They originally estimated the job would take two days and if the estimation of shingle bundles were correct they would have finished in one day. They came back the second day and finished up in one hour. THEY CLEANED UP AS THEY WENT AND DID A VERY GOOD JOB. Again we are very impressed and would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: removed existing roof, installed 30lb felt, added WinterGuard ice membrane to all gutter lines, valley's and protrusions, replaced Neoprene pipe collars and counter flashed the chimney. Installed new ridge vent system, magnetized the yard, picked up and halled away all job debris.

Tom was very professional and had great recommendations on how to solve our problems. He was very interested in maintaining the integrity of the house. He came back a second time to review the details with us since my husband wasn't present when we first met regarding the job. They did an excellent job from start to finish. They were here when they said they would be and Tom was always in contact with me when the weather wouldn't cooperate. All of the men who worked on different aspects of the job were very polite and professional. I got several estimates and their price was very competitive. In addition, Tom was the only one to tell us that we'll be eligible for an energy tax credit. I would highly recommend Certified to anyone needing roofing and/or their other services.

Workers arrived promptly and began work on the day agreed. This company says they carefully clean with a magnet to remove all nails. In the afternoon I came home with my daughter and discovered quite a few roofing nails on the sidewalk. I alerted the manager of the job and he sent a worker to pick them up. An hour later I discovered a big brass nail directly under the tire of my van and pointed this out too. I continued to find nails while work was going on. The workers finished in three days and I was told the nails were all picked up, but we're still finding them on the sidewalks weeks later. I'm afraid they may be in the grass too, and have had to ask my 6-year-old not to walk in the yard barefoot this summer. When choosing a roof color I asked if picking a lighter one helped with energy efficiency, and was told no. Two weeks after the roof was put on I learned that the Department of Energy advises roof colors as close to white as possible, to help with global warming and save money on energy. So my new 30-year dark gray-black roof color was a mistake. Certified Inc.'s representative also recommended against using recycled materials, which would have at least made me feel better about the color choice.

With all due respect to our customer, we informed her about the benefits of choosing a color shingle that is best for this area, but ultimately the decision is the homeowners. We did not hear about the problem with the nails in her yard until we asked for payment. We sent out our foreman the next day and he assured me that the area was spotless. We pride ourselves on our work.

Like many reporters, I called Certified based on positive reviews here on Angie's List. I called on a Thursday and they came out to give me an estimate the very next day. I was leaving on travel in the afternoon - they accommodated my schedule. The new owner of the company (it is currently undergoing a change of ownership) came out to quote my job. His price was very reasonable compared to the other contractors I had contacted (prior to joining Angie's List). I hired them on the spot. They offered me a roofing system that included a layer of insulation that apparently qualifies for a federal energy-savings tax credit equal to 20% of the cost (up to a maximum of $1500). I haven't done my taxes yet, so I can't verify this, but I plan to claim the credit if available. It's been a rainy spring and their schedule has been unpredictable. They showed up unexpectedly on a Saturday morning. After the fact, I found that they had tried to reach me on my office phone, but I had taken a long weekend and didn't receive the message. Regardless of that, the work was done quickly - it only took 5 hours. They cleaned up after themselves and (to my untrained eyes) did a great job. The roofing system they installed came with a 10 year warranty - very hard to beat. I have no reservation recommending Certified to do any roofing work. I will definitely call them next year to do my remaining second story roof.

After seeing the company's profile on Angie's List, I called the number to schedule an appointment. I found out not long after that Certified had done a couple of my neighbor's roofs and they were very happy with the outcome. Tom came right on time and was very thorough and professional in his explanation of what his crew would need to do. He gave me an estimate and a folder that contained plenty of information about his company and products, plus a wealth of letters of recommendation. We decided to go with him after comparing to a couple of other roofers in the area (one did not seem to do as good a job and the other was not dependable in getting back to us.) I was not certain as to what color shingle to use and Tom actually drove around my neighborhood to find houses with the shingles I wanted to see. On the scheduled day to start, his crew arrived right on time. The foreman, Javiar, came to the door and told me what to expect and to call him if I had any questions. The weather was beautiful and they finished the job in two days. The roof looks fabulous, and I especially like the way they finished things off. They also cleaned out my gutters, made sure they were secured well, and did a great job cleaning up after themselves. I have already referred them to two families in my neighborhood. I recommend them 100%.

Jim gave us a straightforward, complete estimate package that included copies of all licenses and insurance policies, product brochures, testimonial letters, and reference contact information. There was no "hard-sell" (as had been the case with other companies) and, while friendly and informative, he was business-like and did not waste our time or his by trying to be our "best friend". The contract was very specific and clear (except for the shingle-style ordered--see note below). There was a helpful-looking "estimate-comparison form" that we did not use. We requested and received a couple of amendments to the original estimate. They were unable to give us a specific start date because of weather conditions. A shingle-delivery truck showed up in about 3 days and put the new shingles on the roof. Unfortunately the truck broke through a weak part of our driveway which was annoying because we had mentioned it to Jim--we fixed it ourselves later). About 3 days later the roofers showed up suddenly early in the morning. They worked quickly and diligently and finished in about 6 hours. They were friendly, appeared to work safely, and cleaned up well afterwards. I cut the grass after they left and did not hit a single nail. The roof appears to have been installed well and we have not noticed any leaks. They said they would come back to fix any problems that come up. Problem: We were emphatic with Jim about wanting 30-year shingles. Our contract asked us to choose "Certainteed XT or GAF Sovereign 30" shingles and since Jim said they preferred the Certainteed, we circled "Certainteed XT". The roof was installed and then we discovered that XT25, not XT30 had been installed. Tom and Jim at Certified readily agreed that there had been an error at their end and included a credit for the price difference of the shingles. There was no practical way for us to get the higher quality roof that we had wanted. Nonetheless we feel that we got our money's worth from Certified and would recommend them to other people.
Description of Work: Cerified removed 2 layers of asphalt shingles from a simple semi-detached house and replaced them with 1 layer of 25-year Certainteed asphalt shingles, with ice-guard, roofing paper, ridge vent, and drip edge. They replaced 7 plywood boards (2 were free, a standard part of their contract). Our roof is about "9 squares" in size. They also replaced an antenna mount on the roof. The price was $3609.00 but we applied a $150 AngiesList coupon to net at $3459.00.

Tom came by and prepared the estimate. He also noted the damage caused by the satellite dish installation and recommended I call DirecTV to have them move the dish. DirecTV moved the dish and paid for the cost to repair the damaged ceiling boards on our enclosed deck. About a week after I accepted the bid from Certified, the shingles were delivered and placed on the roof and 2 days later (when the weather cleared) the crew arrived about 9:00am. The new roof was finished by about 4:30pm and cleanup took about 30-45 minutes. We were thrilled with how smoothly it went.

The whole job was fraught. Tear off of existing roofing materials went 3 - 4 days longer than expected, involving not 3 layers of old roofing as we expected but 6, including cedar shake shingles probably from 1850, tin roofing from probably 1880, tar patching, and plywood in places under the expected 3 layers of asphalt shingles. Because of the thickness of 6 layers of previous roofing, all skylights had to be lowered and reinstalled and all flashing and caulking was far more involved than anticipated. This part of the work was part of the fixed price quote, so the roofer really took a loss on this aspect of the work. Additionally, about 500 linear feet of old 1" by 8" roof deck planking was missing or rotted in my roof and needed replacement. This was more than anticipated by our roofer and while the quote included an additional fee per linear foot, the rarity of the lumber itself also made it hard for the roofer to break even with the per-foot fees for the additional supplies. As tensions rose from these, miscommunications proliferated (about possible gutter replacement - declined in the end and other unanticipated cost items) and things got a little heated. Also, because work went for 6 days instead of the 1 or 2 originally anticipated and all parties had to tolerate the noise, tempers got a little short. The roofer (Tom) promised to visit the site during the work but never got there. My shade garden took some major hits during the demo, with fragile and semi-fragile plants taking hits from falling debris (some were damaged, one with major damage, and some were simply obliterated). Also, the skylight reseat work was initially very rough and looked bad (and required extra attention before it looked finished or semi-finished) and one of our security lights was knocked off the upper edge of the highest roof. As tear off wore down and install of new roof went on, frayed nerves started healing and we started making progress toward dealing with the incidental damages and job scoping issues. Additionally, because this roof was shared with a neighbor who was also working with Tom to get his roof replaced at the same time (easier to manage getting them both done), the situation was more fraught as Tom had to deal with two property owners. Now that the job is complete, my neighbor and I are working with Tom to replace some of the more critical gutters (at a small additional charge) and I think my neighbor is pleased enough with the final outcome and discounts to have sent additional work Tom's way. In the end, I am content with the concessions Tom made to me and my neighbor (for incidental damages, for the unexpected additional costs) and happy that he didn't get too upset about the tear-off surprises. It seems like everything's okay and Tom is please to do more work with me and my neighbor.
Description of Work: Full roof tear off and replacement including new flashing, reseating skylights, disposal and installation of additional roof decking (existing was rotten or missing) planks, installation of high quality underlayment and asphalt shingles. Small sub-roof over back shed done in high quality flat roof roofing materials. 3 main roofs, 1 porch roof and 1 shed roof.

Tom from Certified came out to do an estimate, was careful in his examination of the job, and provided an estimate right away, including a detailed description of the process and materials to be used. The job started when I requested and was completed in less than a week. There turned out to be multiple layers of roofing material that had to be removed, and the structural damage underneath was more extensive than was apparent before the roof and ceiling were removed. Certified went ahead and replaced everything that needed to be replaced, however, doing the job right, which is exactly what I wanted. The new roof was put on and the new ceiling had to be built down from the sloping roof. A new drywall ceiling was installed and the team painted it, repaired some damage that had occurred to the walls and painted those (including trim). Overall, the job ended up costing a little more than the estimate due to the extra damage that was discovered. I agreed to pay for the materials (extra wood, basically) and Tom absorbed the other additional costs (labor, etc), which I thought was fair. I have an air conditioning system on my roof, and Certified worked around it and then had their HVAC person make sure it was all hooked back up and ready to go (I tested it and it works). The company was very good about cleaning up after themselves, and this was a dirty job. Tom was easy to reach via telephone, and had multiple conversations with us about the progress of the work. I feel the work done was very high quality, and have a lot of confidence that the roof will do just fine under its full ten-year warranty. I'd highly recommend Certified to anyone who needs roof work done, particularly if it's a big job.
Description of Work: Certified replaced the roof on my flat-roof Baltimore row home, repaired structural damage that had occurred as a result of the leaky roof, and replaced a damaged ceiling.

They were very prompt and finished when they said they would. They did everything that was in the contract timely and very well. I would hire them again, but hope I don't have to.

They did a good job displaying all of their licenses and insurance, and I felt very comfortable with them after they left me with an estimate. I received a couple of other estimates for my roof, and Certified was the lowest price as they stated they would be on their proposal, and they didn't even require a deposit. When they came out to do the work, their crew foreman was very professional and friendly. They moved quickly and cleaned up well. I would certainly use them again in the future. Great quality and value!
Description of Work: The roof on one of my properties was getting older (18 years) and I decided to use Certified for my project.
