We hired JGKB to update our kitchen. This was in conjunction with another remodeling project which they were not a part of. We made clear that we were not interested in gutting the kitchen, but were instead looking to update the space, replacing most of the appliances and the island, but keeping the majority of the cabinets. ( To be honest, we weren't sure how they would react to the project because we were very strict about staying on budget.) After discussing some initial ideas with our designer Lauren, she came back with a concept that was not what we had originally considered but, to be honest, was tremendously better than what we had in mind. She came up with things that we had never thought of and the new items meld seamlessly into the old, basically giving us a "new" kitchen at less than the cost and much less hassle than a total redo. The finishes and appliances were high-end, so I won't pretend the cost was low, but it was reasonable for what we got. We are very happy with it and we get nothing but great feedback. It looks like a brand new kitchen. Also, the designer stayed involved throughout the process and afterwards. We also hired them to tack on a pantry redo later, which involved building custom cabinets, etc. Also completely happy with that project. Would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Kitchen redesign and pantry redesign (separate projects).

After putting down a healthy deposit and paying fully along the way, Carolyn Thomas forgot to design a light switch to enter the hall bath, forcing us to either install it about 4' into the room, or outside the door in the hall. She was difficult, unresponsive and delayed the job for three weeks while we disagreed over such a major error. At that point, tile and cabinets were installed, and we were expecting a baby, so it was simply an issue of making it work and us happy without gutting the job and wasting another 3 months. Jennifer Gilmer wasn't an effective peacemaker, and should have supervised the job better. We founder their prices to be marked up excessively. For example, a curved shower rod that we found ourselve, and cost $40 at Home Depot was billed to us for $120 by Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen and Bath. We agreed to order fixtures through them and they take excessive advantage of that.

Carolyn was fun to work with, very creative and really knows her stuff. I had a bunch of ideas (and a stack of bathroom design books) going into our first meeting and ended up with something very different from my original ideas - and I ended up with a bathroom I absolutely love, down to the towel bars. We ended up spending a bit more than our original budget, but it was worth it to get the high quality products and design work.
Description of Work: Design work for complete renovation of our small bungalow bathroom. Carolyn Thomas was our designer. She worked with us on the design of the new bathroom and selection and purchase of the cabinets, tile, flooring, fixtures, and accessories.

Jennifer created an amazing kitchen in my Georgetown home. The space, while not small, was extremely challenging. I had already worked with several architects and interior designers who simply could not or would not address my requirements or deal effectively with the problematic nuances of my older home. I had all but given up until I met Jennifer. In addition to being a brilliant designer, she was extremely patient, thoughtful, and cognizant of my "wish list" and "dos and don't" through the entire process. While I wanted, and was willing to pay for, a high-end kitchen, nonetheless I didn't have bottomless pockets, so when an idea looked as if it was going to be expensive she informed me immediately so I could decide whether or not to proceed with that particular concept. Jennifer was always a calm and reassuring presence throughout this process and she was always available for communication during the actual construction. I never had to wait for her to respond...she stayed on top of the project until the very end. She truly understands customer service and I look forward to having her do my bathrooms!!
Description of Work: Major kitchen remodel (price above does not include labor which was done by a contractor). Project entailed incorporating space that heretofore had not been part of the kitchen; removal of a door to an outside patio; incorporation in the kitchen of two levels without interrupting the flow or utility of the space; maintaining the integrity of an older Georgetown home while providing a hint of modern design; and satisfying both "must have" and "nice to have" lists in a very challenging space.

they told us at the first meeting that they could do it at the budget and time frame. on the second meeting they had a range price with the lowest at our budget and the highest a lettle less than double our budget. after telling them that our budget had not change as our time they agree and we signed a retiner and they went back to work. third meeting: the time was more o less the same and the budget was twice which was unaceptable and cancelled the contract
Description of Work: they were supposed to design a new kitchen and bathroom for a specific budget

Response from Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath
MY INITIAL ESTIMATE TO THESE CLIENTS, SITE UNSEEN, WAS $220,000.00 MAX. I WENT TO THEIR HOME AT NO CHARGE (USUALLY WE REQUIRE A RETAINER FEE FIRST), AND, DURING THIS MEETING, I TOLD HER THAT I HAD GROSSLY UNDERESTIMATED THE LABOR SINCE I HADN’T SEEN THE JOB SITE CONDITIONS. AFTER VIEWING THE HOME, I KNEW, AND VERY CLEARLY WARNED THIS CLIENT, ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE LABOR ON THIS PROJECT WILL BE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE. THE CLIENTS DECIDED TO PROCEED AND PAID THE $3,000.00 RETAINER REGARDLESS OF MY WARNING. FOR THIS RETAINER FEE, PUT THEIR PROJECT IN FRONT OF OTHERS IN ORDER TO MEET THEIR TIME FRAME AND FOCUSED ON IT FOR 2 WEEKS. WE DESIGNED THE ENTIRE KITCHEN, MEASURED AND DREW THE MASTER BATH/HALL/MASTER BEDROOM AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE, AND, SPENT HOURS PRICING ALL OF THE COMPONENTS FOR THE KITCHEN PROJECT. WE SPENT MORE TIME DOWN AT THEIR HOME WITH THE CONTRACTOR IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THEM WITH THE LABOR COST. AS WE HAD ANTICIPATED, THE LABOR PRICE WAS MORE THAN ORIGINALLY EXPECTED, HOWEVER, THE MATERIAL COST WAS EXACTLY WITHIN WHAT I HAD ESTIMATED. NEITHER I, NOR THE CONTRACTOR, KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT A $150,000 BUDGET UNTIL THE DAY WE SAT DOWN TO PRESENT ALL OF THE PRICING. THE CLIENT DECIDED TO FIRE ME AND TOLD ME THAT I WAS UNPROFESSIONAL, EVEN AFTER I OFFERED TO TRY TO WORK ON VALUE ENGINEERING THE PROJECT IN AN EFFORT TO BRING COSTS DOWN. THE SHORT OF IT IS THAT THEIR EXPECTATIONS FROM THE BEGINNING WERE UNREALISTIC TO BEGIN WITH. I WISH THEY HAD TOLD ME THEIR BUDGET OF $150,000 BEFORE WE PROCEEDED BECAUSE I COULD HAVE SAVED EVERYONE A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT. THEY THEN PROCEEDED TO CONTACT AMERICAN EXPRESS TO GET BACK THEIR ORIGINAL RETAINER FEE, REGARDLESS OF THE HOURS AND HOURS WE SPENT TRYING TO ACCOMMODATE THEM, AND, REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT THE RETAINER AGREEMENT STATES THAT IT IS NON-REFUNDABLE. AFTER VIEWING THE MULTITUDE OF DOCUMENTS FROM THE WORK THAT WE PERFORMED ON THIS JOB, AMERICAN EXPRESS FOUND THAT THIS CLIENT DID NOT HAVE A VIABLE COMPLAINT. WE HAVE A STELLAR REPUTATION AND ARE IN GOOD STANDING WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AS WELL AS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE KITCHEN AND BATH INDUSTRY.
