Very prompt, professional service. Will use them again and refer.
Description of Work: Checked leaking exterior hose bib. The service provider found it was necessary only to replace washers, but he had a replacement handle (it was also broken) in the truck, and replaced that, too. Also replaced three control knobs on a bathtub, one of which had been broken.

Jim Arnold and the team that worked on our house were fantastic. In the midst of the demolition of the downstairs bath, we found that the upstairs bath had some leakage issues which caused water damage to the sub-floor as well as the structural wall upstairs. So we negotiated doing both bathrooms at the same time. To help us make it through they hooked up a makeshift tub downstairs so we could get clean while the work was going on. They ran new wiring to both bathrooms, and tapped into the existing radiated heating system so that we could heat the bathrooms with that system as well. When the job expanded to a much larger job than anticipated, Jim did not miss a beat. He did not put us off, he just expanded the scope of his work and kept right on going. We also were expecting a baby and so he tried to speed up the work as much as he could so that there would not be noise and dust when the baby arrived. I cannot say enough good things about this company. I've not met a contractor this honest and willing to work for us. Because the job expanded in scope and price for us, Jim went to bat for us trying to cut costs where he could for us. It is extra effort that he put into the job, that he did not have to do. His workers were quality people as well and took care to keep the mess down and cleaned up very well!
Description of Work: They came in to do a downstairs bathroom remodel and ended up doing a double bathroom remodel. They gutted both bathrooms and installed new fixtures, as well as little extras like a radiator towel bars, a recessed medicine cabinet, an opening in the wall to put a stained glass panel to allow light into the hallway, expanding the upstairs bathroom and putting in a linen closet as well as a double bowl vanity. They upgraded the wiring in the bathrooms as well as the radiator heating system. In putting in the radiated towel bar, they found that our expansion tank was not large enough and a valve was not to code.

The price for the well tank installation was around $300. The price to fix the toilet was about $115 and to unclog the bathtub was about $90. The initial call went well. Also when I called them again for the second and third times, they were great! They sent out very nice technicians that were very knowledgeable. The price was also very reasonable. They were very professional. I will use them again in the future and would recommend them to others.
Description of Work: They installed a well tank for me. They have also replaced a toilet shut-off valve and cleaned out a clog that I had in my bathtub. These were all three separate occasions.

They came out and looked at everything. Since it wasn't in our house they didn't charge us. We also used to have an old concrete sink in the basement and they replaced it with a fiber glass sink. The quotes were very professional, they also gave us a couple different options. They were very patient with what I wanted to do. I was very satisfied with the results.
Description of Work: We had a clog what we thought was our basement but it was in the city line. They came and cleaned it out.

My first call explaining our broken shower head pipe and faucet leak led to a very accommodating scheduling the next day. I had to cancel due to a family illness and they were extremely nice and helpful about rescheduling for me. Our bathroom sink faucet was leaking and we were unable to take it off to replace it. The plumber had a terrible time with it - hard water and acid made it impossible to unscrew - and eventually had to saw it off, with my permission. They were to put on a cheap plastic faucet until they could get the proper faucet to match the rest of our bathroom. Unfortunately, once sawed off, tubes underneath were pulled and a replacement could not be installed. So we were left with no water in that sink. They were to get me an estimate the next day or so for replacement and new faucet - I went in and out of town and called them after more than a week as we had not received the estimate. Apparently the estimate person had been on vacation and it was awaiting his return. When I explained I was connected with a very polite and apologetic person who called me back within the hour with an estimate. They came and replaced it the same week. During the first visit they also fixed the pipe to the shower head which was broken and leaking badly. Since I had the plumber and helper here, I asked if they could also move a sprayer hose on our jacuzzi to the other side of the tub and replaced the drain in the kitchen sink with one I had purchased previously. Overall the staff was very professional and quick to assist except for the forgotten estimate. All of the work is complete and works fine.

The plumber from the Ruth company resolved the issue of a leaky pipe which had baffled a number of plumbers before. He waited to make sure that the leak was fix and did not leave until he was sure the pipe would not leak again. Excellent work!

This seemed like a very challenging problem. Mike came out and said he would give it his best shot. Thanks to his tremendous skill and professional expertise, he helped us avoid incurring the expense and mess of tearing out the ceiling. He unsoldered the brass tap and lowered the shoe connection, repiped the trap to waste and the overflow. The work was done in a timely manner, and with tremendous competence. Mike impressed us with his helpful and pleasant demeanor. He was a lifesaver!
Description of Work: Had to cut out tub and piping to make waste and overflow work. 2nd floor tub had a plunger lodged inside. Drain was cemented into the floor and tub, along with the water piping. Anther plumber who came out said the only way to fix it would be to open the ceiling in the downstairs unit.

I called the John E. Ruth Company on a Tuesday and explained the problem. They were able to send someone over within a couple of days. The plumber they sent called when he was on the way, and showed up within the agreed 2-hour window. He quickly figured out the problem (worn cartridge in the faucet), had the needed replacement part in his van, and fixed it within an hour. He was very polite, explained the problem clearly, and did not leave any sort of mess. Overall, it was a pleasant and easy experience.

It took about 2 weeks to get an estimate. Part of the problem, I think, was that they were calling my cell phone, which I don't always have on. But, they didn't call my home phone. Everyone I dealt with was helpful and friendly. Tom, and his helper Leslie, was very thorough. They spent most of the morning & afternoon performing the work. After the water heater was installed, it looked like there might be a leak. Tom had me speak with the owner. He said it's probably condensation but to check it later that night and call back if there is a problem. He was right about the condensation.
Description of Work: Remove old water heater & install new one. Install gas line to gas fireplace. Replace PVC water valves, under basement sink, with metal ones. Note: the work was performed on Dec. 6, 2007 and I thought I had submitted a review, but it never showed up on Angie's List.

When I called I was passed to Jim who was very knowledgeable and we scheduled an appointment. The worker arrived on time, assessed the situation and went to work. When he completed the work, he tested the sump pump several times to make sure there were no leaks and that everything was working properly.
Description of Work: The pipe taking the water out of the sump pump was leaking. It was diagnosed that the pipe was not properly installed, pipe was repositioned and the "stop flap" was replaced with a more efficient one. This makes the process much quieter when the sump pump is running.

Mr Arnold came to my house free of charge and took the time to look at all of the possible causes of leaking water coming into the ceiling and wall of my downstairs living room. I thought it was a pipe in the wall but he determined it was water coming from the tub- old caulking was wearing away and so I was able to fix it myself. Thanks to the contractor coming out and doing some research, it saved me quite a bit of money and they didn't even charge for the visit. I would HIGHLY recommend giving them a try!
Description of Work: Called to receive an estimate on fixing what I thought was a cracked pipe in the wall. Turns out it was bad caulking from the bath tub that was allowing water to come into the lower floor wall and ceiling.

John Ruth and Co did an absolutely superb job on our bathroom remodel. We could not have asked for a more professional and dedicated group of workers. From the initial to final estimate, they showed up for appointments on time, provided well written estimates, and gave us a project schedule. Several weeks later they showed up on the exact date and time to start work. Every worker was professional and did an excellent job, both in demolition and installation. The foreman kept us informed of the progress and any problems they ran into. We worked out a fair payment schedule and trusted them with keys to the house. The workers cleaned up after themselves daily. After gutting, the actual remodel became a transformation. The workers were meticulous! From installing the tile flooring to installing wainscotting and trim; there were no details spared. The photos give an indication of the quality of work. Most of all, this contractor was fair about everything and kept us informed.
Description of Work: This job was a complete gut and remodel of a master bath in a 170 year old historic home. Demolition included removal of plumbing, wiring, vanity, toilet, plaster walls, and flooring. Then contractor did a comprehensive remodel to the entire bathroom including upgraded electrical work, new plumbing, new tile floor, installation of Victorian claw foot tub, vanity, toilet, and fixtures. Mid point thru the remodel, the contractor found a support wall and beams of the floor in bad need of stabilizing due to previous water damage. Carpentry work included removal and repair of adjoining walls and old flooring; stabilizing of floor framing, and reframing walls. Additional work included installation of circuit breaker panel, trim work, painting, insulation of walls and floors, and wainscotting. The contractor also upgraded and installed new electrical wiring for the laundry room to handle new washer & dryer.

This was a great experience. Not only did the representative show up promptly and install the new faucet, but he also did some great investigation re. what was causing the low pressure. He initially thought it was a part, and he went out to locate a new one -- at no charge to me for the time. The part couldn't be located and it was just as well, since he then discovered some blockage that hadn't been apparent before. Using a tweezers and one of my knitting needles, he did a great job of clearing it and getting the pressure back to where it should be. So, I have a great shower again, and the company charged me for the work work only, when they could have very easily sold me a story that many parts and pipes needed to be repaired. Because the representative was willing to take the time to really investigate the problem, a solution was found that didn't cost me an exorbitant amount. I am very grateful!
Description of Work: I initially needed a new faucet put on for the bathtub, since the broken one had been soldered on. I had a whole kit to replace, so everything matched. In addition, I have been experiencing very low pressure in the bathtub and wanted an idea of what was causing it and an estimate of the cost to repair.

Plumber was not familiarized with the tools and supplies in his van. For a company that charges hourly rate, this is a big problem since most of the time the plumber was doing my job he was looking for tools and supplies. Plumber appeared to be untrained and not capable of solving small problems. Plumber worked very slow and because of not being able to find supplies in his van he had to call for help. Left the job site without checking to make sure the water main and the hot water supply were turned back on (I discovered that the hot water supply was still off when trying to take a shower). Plumber was not detail-oriented.

I called John E. Ruth Co. Immediately after another plumber failed to show up for an appointment (which was scheduled 5 days in advance and for which I stayed home from work). I was hoping to get an appointment sometime the next week, but they were able to send a technician right away. He arrived within 30 min of my call, inspected the work, attempted to tighten the fittings, then informed me that it would have to be replaced. He called another technician to help him, and together they made the repair. So far, no leaks. Cleanup of the shower floor could have been better, but overall I am happy.
Description of Work: They replaced a shower drain that was leaking into the floor below. They had to cut out and remove the old metal drain and metal trap and replace it with a brass drain and PVC trap and PVC pipe.

The blockage and leak happened at the beginning of Labor Day weekend. I initially called several other plumbers who claimed to have "emergency" services, but, of those, only Roto-Rooter actually called back to schedule an appointment, but I hoped to avoid them. I called John E. Ruth co. at 7:00 Tuesday morning after the weekend. They offered to send someone out between 8 AM and noon, but I asked for a later time. They scheduled it for between noon and 2 PM. Someone came out a little after noon. The plumber was quiet and courteous. He removed the s-trap and used a snaking machine on the line down to the basement for about 20 minutes. He then replaced the trap. The drain is now working well and the leak is gone. The charge was for an hour's work and $50 extra for same-day service. We were very satisfied.

The plumbers from John Ruth Co. have always done good work for us. I would recommend them highly. Reliable. Top notch. Keep up the good work.
Description of Work: We thought we would need extensive repair work on the plumbing for our upstairs shower. We thought bad pipes were the cause of the leaks. The repairman was able to demonstrate that the leaks were not the result of bad pipes, rather the caulk around the tub was rotted and that was the real problem.
