Long Fence

The first person that came out to my home was nice and we initially set an appointment for Saturday. Later, it was changed to Tuesday. Finally, when the crew showed up to do the work they told me that the lawn was too steep and they would not be able to install the fence, then left. I called the company and they said they were sending out a new crew, but it turned out to be the same one. They did not do an accurate job and their customer service was horrible. I paid half down and had to wait four months before my fence was fully installed.

The project took a lot longer than it should have. They had to put the fence up three times before they got it right and I am still not very happy with the results. I do not recommend them.

Jerith gate was repaired, the 6 ft high TREX fence for 861 LF installed AFTER having tracked down intelligent life in scheduling. THEY called at 9:30 to delay for 2 days. Found someone to tell me when job would start. Fencing installed by 2 crews. 1 installed to grade, other installed for a straight top line??? Have to build a 16 inch block wall UNDER THE FENCE! 264 LF of the other TREX fencing must be hand fabricated in shop. Sales didn't tell me it would take 2-3 weeks to fabricate plus a week to install. They had ALL materials for job, didn't start fabrication until AFTER privacy sections went in. Overall F+ in mission planning, schedule + overall management. For this price, I would have expected attention to detail. Called the so-called head of customer service at corporate headquarters, a rock with lips. Sales does not talk to scheduling to install, supervisor and branch manager is mentally AWOL. Run away from LONG FENCE!! Wait for other contractors to begin sales of TREX.

Crew arrived as scheduled. They did an excellent job attached neighbor's fence to our new one (no easy task). However, while crew foreman concentrated on that corner of the fence, another corner of fence was placed one foot over our property line. Mistake was not noticed until they had cleaned up and departed. We reported the error and asked them to move the fence. Salesman assured us they would fix the problem. After two separate phone calls asking us to explain what happened, Long Fence sent out surveyor to ensure property line measurements. Once they confirmed the fence was over the line, they sent a 2 man crew back to move a portion of the fence. The 2 man team also corrected a gate that dragged slightly. They stayed with it until we were satisfied. Only complaint was the amount of time needed to schedule the surveyor and corrective action. The finished product is excellent.

We experienced the same delays, missed appointments, lack of communication and follow through, that many other Angie's List members have written about. Clearly there are some problems within the company that translate to scheduling and other problems for the customer. Ultimately we got our fence, but only after numerous phone calls and a fax expressing our intention to write a letter of complaint to TREX, and request and intervention by Angie's List. They arrived with the wrong color fence and had to return to the Chantilly warehouse, a 2 1/2 hour round trip. They ran out of time to install the fence that day, but said they would try to return the next business day. One week passed with no word, despite multiple phone calls and being shuffled from person to person. Finally we contacted the VP, who was extremely rude. Ultimately we got the fence, but wouldn't recommend Long Fence unless absolutely necessary (i.e. that you want a TREX fence). They did a very good job of installing it.

They installed the railing and it looks great but they damaged my lawn irrigation system when I called them they said we are sorry our insurance company will not take care of personal items. I told him several times he was close to the plastic piping and to be careful and he insisted it was no problem. Well he did damage the line and it cost $250.

Overall, the experience was positive. I called for an estimate and was provided with a date and time frame within a week. Date: Apr 5th. The time frame was limited to 2 hrs which I appreciated very much. The representative, Jeannette Carzon, called before arriving. Jeannette was very professional, knowledgeable, and personable. There was no pressure to sign a contract that day. We felt that the replacement costs for the two gates were high ($689), but decided to go with Long as they had installed the original fence many years ago. We were not advised in advance about the date of installation so was a little startled when the installer showed up in the yard on April 18th. The job took about 3 hours. The gates work fine, although the latches are placed a little too close to the pole so access to the latch is somewhat impeded. The installer claimed it was necessary to place it in that position. We still have a little doubt on that, but overall are satisfied.

The representative was very nice and promptly responded to my call. I accepted his bid(unfortunately before this service was known to me).The workers came with the wrong fence. They returned with the correct fence but put the gate in backwards because they had the wrong gate. This caused problems because the bottom of the gate hit the ground when it was opened inwards instead of outwards.

An estimator came out that I thought was very inexperienced so I requested another estimate. They told it was a waste of time to give me another estimate. I also wanted them to give me a statement telling me that anyone doing work for me would be 100% legal and that they were licensed, bonded, and insured. I went around with them about this for 6 weeks until they finally signed it. At that point, they pressured me to sign the contract. Before I even got home from from their office, they called me and told me they needed to come out and give me another estimate.

Though I was told they would be there between 8am-noon, no one ever showed. Twice I called and was told they were on their way. They did arrive the following day, but they did not handle the tree part at all as I wanted (and had made clear to the salesman). However, because they spoke little English, it was very hard to explain what I wanted. I had to draw pictures and while they finally did something closer to what I wanted, it was not as nice as I had hoped. They said the gate had to be remade to fit and I was told it would take 3-5 days. Ten days later I called about the gate and while no one called me back (they were not great about calling back right away), the gate was mysteriously installed early the next day. I wonder how long it would have been had I not called. Not if it was free would I ever do business with them again.

Our appointment had been set for several weeks, when the company called the day before to reschedule for a day later. I was agreeable, however it rained a bit on the new day. They never called me to explain that they would not be coming and to reschedule. I had to call them. They said they would be out the next day. Again no shows, and again no phone call. I had to call them again. When they rescheduled it was another week later! They arrived late, and were unable to complete in one day as expected. They did return the next day and finish. Both wooden gates have had to be rebuilt due to warping, which they did do at no additional charge, however one gate is sticking and will need to be adjusted. I'd think that a professional fence company would build in appropriate clearances to accommodate the expansion and contraction of wood.

Up to the point where I signed the contract it was great. After that it was horrible. Long Fence missed their estimated start date. They sent subcontractors from another fence company to do the work. That company brought the wrong equipment and literally borrowed equipment from another contractor working in the neighborhood. Four days into a job that was estimated at 3-4 days, that subcontactor told me that that had installed all of the posts to which gates attach incorrectly. They had omitted the aluminum inserts those posts require to hold the weight of the gates. Additional material had to be ordered and that took two more weeks. When the gates were hung they were determined to be warped and had to be reordered... another week delay. Long Fence management NEVER contacted me about these issues -- I had to contact them for updates. Their staff (especially the receptionist in Ijamsville) were rude and unresponsive. I finally accepted the job almost 2 months late after much distress.

A JOKE. Salesman arrived on time and happily quoted us $14,500. When I questioned the price he brought it down to $13000. My contract clearly stated a date the fence was to be installed by and I was told this was not a problem. Two days after the scheduled install, I still had no fence and my calls were not being returned. I had given a $4500 deposit on my credit card, so I called and disputed the charge. That same afternoon I got a call saying the fence would be installed the next day so I agreed to let them go ahead. The next day- again they were a no-show. I called, told them to forget it, and finally got a supervisor who was very apologetic for the screw up. He told me he would discount the fence and have it up by the end of the week. A crew arrived on Saturday and installed the fence but not the gates. A week later the gates came and the locks were installed incorrectly. After much more arguing they came back and fixed the locks, but I still havent received my promised discount.

Overall, a fair experience. It took three visits to complete the work. The back fence was removed and replaced in the first visit, but the doors were hung incorrectly and they didnt install the lattice (which they took off the bill). The second crew removed the chain link out front (forgotten by the first crew) but were not scheduled to repair the doors. The same crew returned later in the week to completely rebuild the doors (which are already sagging). The first visit was unscheduled (surprise! Heres your fence!) so no one was home to supervise. It took repeated phone calls to reschedule at OUR convenience. The second crew was very professional and experienced, however. With all the mistakes, Long Fence took about $500 off the bill (including the lattice).

You approach a company like Long Fence knowing they have cornered the market. The rep. sympathized with our need for a tall fence to contain our dog. We asked to be present for the installation. The installers came without warning four days after they were due, trashed the yard with metal pieces and concrete, cut the hedges to bits and installed a fence that did not sit on our flat grade. The dog simply crawled under. After telling me they could slide the fabric down, the rep said he couldn't. I believe he was lying. I'm sure it looked like more trouble than it was worth. They did suggest I hire them to make the bottom of the fence secure. I am completely disappointed by Long Fence. The company was very attentive when they wanted me to commit to the project. Building the fence was a different story. I doubt the rep ever told the installers about reason for needing a fence. If you are considering hiring Long Fence, make sure you speak directly to the guys who come to install.

We called Long Fence and requested an estimate. We were told a designer would meet with us on a Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. and made arrangements to change our schedules. On the day of the appointment, the designer called to say she was in Virginia all day and couldnt make it to Maryland.. could we reschedule for the following morning. This was not possible for us, but the designer told me that she would come to our property, view our current porch, and prepare a design and estimate for the porch and a patio. This was two months ago. Nobody has called back.

I was pleased with the actual construction, but cleanup and followup were atrocious. Repeated promises to address issues were ignored or deferred.

Crew was prompt and efficient. It was only a 2-hour job, but it all went off smoothly. The fencing part of this contract went well. I wouldnt hire the company again only because of problems with a deck being built at the same time.

Computer glitch caused company to lose my scheduled time. After I waited through the two hour window, I called, and they dispatched a sales rep. Competitive bid. Company called three days before scheduled date to ask if they could come next day. Work was completed timely and neatly.

I needed it ASAP. The salesman told me 2 wks. After 2 wks, I called. His boss had lost my deposit check. I asked why they did not call and tell me this. He made excuses, and said he would come and get another one. No call no show. I called him and told him I would go with another company. He said he would come and get a check that night, and I would get priority because of the mistake. I also made 2 other calls to managers who did not return them. I waited 2 days and called the scheduler myself to get an install date. She never called me back. After 1 more wk, I called their call ctr. I spoke to Vicky who helped me get a call from the scheduler, who still would not give me a date. Vicky called again and they agreed to install it the next day. On top of all this the workmen lied to me. I asked them if they would take away the dirt from the holes. They said yes. They just spread it around and my yard is a mudpit now. Half my grass is ruined. The fence is not even perfect. I am so sorry I hired them.

The overall experience was good. They replaced some wood in my fence that was rotten. They were fast, and the fence looks great.

I think that the price for composite decking is too high. However, Long Fence was the lowest of the three companies that provided me an offer. $22,770 seems a high price to pay to redeck an existing deck (900 SQFT) and replace the railings.

I was originally given a price of $6000 to replace our old wood fence. After more than a week they came back to say they had underestimated the job and, because they didnt cash my deposit they were not obligated to honor the contract. Since they were still the lowest bidder, we had no choice but to use them. We were still not happy about the overall professionalism of the company since they did not honor their original bid. However, they did a good job and replaced a 400 foot fence in one day. Unfortunately, the estimator designed the fence so that it looked like the reverse of all fences I have seen. I suggest if you use them you make sure of the estimate and make certain that the design of the fence is exactly what you want. Dont be fooled by squiggles on the estimate sheet.
