First, when I called his wife answered. No name of business, just "Hello". Unprofessional. Then he called me back a few days later, agreed to an estimate, and never heard from him again.

Work consisted of removing the old floor and subfloor, repairing any damaged joists, installing a new subfloor, and finally installing a new floor. The old floor in our breakfast nook was in bad shape and in need of repair. In places, the floor was beginning to cave in. David removed the old floor and subfloor, a process that revealed previous shoddy attempts at repairing the floor by previous owners of the home. Damaged joists were either sistered or replaced, and the subfloor leveled. This whole process was documented through photographs taken by David of the work as it progressed. Lauan was laid down and the surface meticulously cleaned and then primed before laying down vinyl tiles. I had selected and bought myself the vinyl tiles, which are groutable using a special vinyl-based grout. David even graciously offered to exchange with the vendor the grout I had purchased for the same product but in a darker color, to better show off the grout lines. David and I discussed the whole process, including what width spacers to use. New floorboard that matched what is used in the rest of the house was used around the edges of the new floor and this was caulked with clear caulking. All the work was completed in less than one week. The new floor is solid and a dramatic improvement. It also looks great. Total cost was $2174, excluding the cost of the tiles, grout, and spacers (which cost less than $150).
Description of Work: Installed new subfloor and vinyl tile floor for small room (approximately 10 feet x 8 feet).

For the fence and gate, the work consisted of installing post where needed to install a remaining 8’ section of fencing and installing post for approx. 4’ gate running from the end of the fence back to the house. For the gable vents with fan, the work consisted of removing the siding in the upper gable ends of house, cutting a hole in both ends of house, installing an 18 inch octagon style gable vent with built in J channel, replacing the siding and installing a gable vent fan at one vent location and tying into our existing electric in the attic. For the foundation vents, the work consisted of cutting an opening in the already installed PVC board skirting in the crawl openings and installing an automatic foundation vent. One vent was installed on each end of house. For the deck gate, a gate in the same style as the existing railing was constructed with hinging on the post at the opening at the top of the steps leading to the deck. The installation of the interior lighted door proved more difficult than originally anticipated as the door opening was no longer square due to settling of the house (typical of an older home). Nonetheless, despite having to spend more hours and do additional work to install the interior door, David stuck by his original estimate for this job ($160) and did not charge us for the additional labor. The cost was also lower than it might have been because we had separately purchased the door ourselves and this is not part of the $160. We bought the door at an auction and paid about $70 (far below the likely retail value of about $200 or more). The work was initiated quickly and completed over the course of about two weeks. We were very happy with the quality of the work and the price was very reasonable. The final cost was the same as the original estimate ($1583), with no surprises. The cost of each separate task was individually estimated (the total came to $1583). The work area was thoroughly cleaned up at the conclusion of the project. Communication was excellent, as David kept us informed of how the work was progressing. Since we were away while the work was carried out, we had to carefully coordinate with David so that he could gain entry into the house (we installed a lock box with a code- of the type realtors use) and had to disarm the security system so that he would not trigger the alarm. This arrangement worked flawlessly and David promptly notified us by text message when he was finished each day, so that we could re-arm the security system. We found David to be friendly and very professional. He listened to our concerns and suggestions and carefully explained the work he was about to perform. My wife and I are very pleased with the result of this remodeling. We highly recommend David and Next Level Home Improvements for any projects that require a very good, licensed carpenter who is willing to work with and listen to the needs of the customer. This was not the first remodeling project we hired David for and if we have additional work we need done that requires a carpenter, we will surely hire David and Next Level Home Improvements again.
Description of Work: My wife and I purchased an old home, built in 1918, in the historic district of Cambridge, MD on Maryland’s Eastern Shore back in August 2011. Years ago, the back yard was enclosed by a stockade fence and gate but after many years of neglect, the gate was no longer there and the fencing had gaps. We have a dog and wanted to be able to let her roam freely in the back yard without worrying that she might escape and run into the street. So, on the recommendation of a friend and neighbor, we hired David Paul, a licensed carpenter and the owner of Next Level Home Improvements, to repair the fence and install a new gate. We also had David install gable vents and a fan in the attic as well as foundation vents. Finally, we had David install a gate on our wooden outdoor deck at the back of the house and install an interior lighted door (wooden door with 5 x 3 glass panels) between our kitchen and breakfast nook.

Work consisted of framing up a triangular area in corner of two rooms removing existing register cover, attaching a length of ducting to extend ducting to floor, installing a heat/air register at top and one close to the floor to assist air flow. Registers are adjustable (able to open and close). Framing was covered with wallboard, taped and finished for us to paint (we wanted to do the painting ourselves). Three of these new ducts were constructed, 2 in the living room and one in the dining room. The work was initiated quickly and completed over the course of several days. We were very happy with the quality of the work and the price was very reasonable. The final cost was the same as the original estimate, with no surprises. David matched the original baseboard molding exactly and the work area was clean when the work was completed. Communication was excellent, as David kept us informed of how the work was progressing. We found David to be friendly and very professional. This remodeling project has indeed improved the air flow and made the downstairs warmer. As the weather has turned colder, we have noticed much less heat stratification. We highly recommend David and Next Level Home Improvements for any projects that require a very good, licensed carpenter who is willing to take the time to listen to his customers.
Description of Work: My wife and I purchased a Victorian home, about 100 years old, in the historic district of Cambridge, MD. The home had been renovated to include central air and heating, along with the needed duct work. However, we had last winter real issues with heat stratification: the upstairs were very warm but downstairs would always be very cold. Downstairs, all the vents were located in the ceiling. We decided to have the duct work modified so that there would be additional vents installed downstairs near the floor level so that the heated air could rise. The duct work would need to be hidden from view, which meant that the area would need to be framed off and covered with wallboard. On a recommendation by a friend and neighbor, we hired David Paul, owner of Next Level Home Improvements. David is a licensed carpenter and was able to do the framing around the new duct work as well as the drywall/wallboard.
