Installers showed at scheduled times. Both the carpet and hardwood installers were very professional and each job was completed in a timely manner. Very pleased with the results.

The service was great. A little pricey but we all know companies are in business to make money. We removed all the breakables and left the big stuff. The installers moved that big stuff out, removed the old carpeting and padding and installed the new product. They were on time and friendly and was done before noon.

They arrived promptly and got to work, most of the work was done by two people. There is a lot of 'drying' time associated with this project, so it took 5 days to do everything. They told us ahead of time when they would be working and approximately how much time was needed. They cleaned up after everything. They provided solid advice on the care and maintenance of the floor. I highly recommend Design Expo in Bowie for floor service. I am really pleased.
Description of Work: The Design Expo floor folks did an excellent job refinishing the hardwood floor in our house. We had a 23 year old Bruce floor that had darkened over the years. The DE folks sanded the floor down to the 'raw' wood, stained it a medium brown and then put a layer of polyurethane finish on it. It looks fabulous. I never liked the grooved Bruce floor and now it is mostly gone. We also asked them to remove the wood floor in the powder room and lay a ceramic tile. We purchased the backerboard, tile and the grout separately. The DE folks brought all of the rest of the materials.

I had a few companies provide estimates. One place provided a slightly cheaper price but I felt more comfortable going with Design Expo largely due to Gene's professionalism. When he did the estimate he was on time, polite, quick, and informative. The price was similar to 2 other companies and well below 1 company. The first day the workers were 2 hours late. There were 2 men, one named Young who was in charge and the other who was more of an assistant. Communication with Young was very difficult, not because of a language barrier, just because he wouldn't answer me when I spoke to him or asked him questions. He was concerned about the parking situation (downtown DC) -- I explained to him that my building has a loading zone he could use plus a spot designated for commercial vehicles that he could park in after unloading. He said nothing and just stared into the distance. I asked "OK? Will that work? Are you going to start unloading now?" several times and he kept silent and stared at the street. Very bizarre and very frustrating. This continued throughout the first day and was a little better the second day after I spoke to Gene who called me at the end of day 1 to check in (nice touch). The workers needed a room to set up the saw and do all of the cutting -- this was not mentioned in the planning stages. I did not want the cutting done inside my condo due to the vast amounts of dust and sawdust it creates so they reluctantly used the hallway directly outside my unit. They did an OK job cleaning up at the end of both days. I still had to vacuum it myself and wipe down my neighbors' doors. They did a great job sweeping up inside my unit at the end of the job. I was told this would be a one day job with possibly a couple more hours to finish up the next day. They worked until 630p on the first day and returned at 9a the next morning, working until 730p. They had left a couple of things not finished or half-finished, when I pointed these items out they happily fixed them but of course I would have preferred that these things were done initially. Design Expo should also provide some guidance as to how to care for hardwood floors, do's and don't's, that kind of thing. I know it's easy to Google but even just one page of info would be helpful. The floor itself (and baseboards) looks great! It's been 2 weeks and I haven't had any problems. The whole place looks a lot clearner, classy, more modern. If you are thinking about hardwood floors, do it! Great decision that I wish I made years ago. Overall I had a good experience other than Young's attitude as noted above. Some paint got banged up in a corner when they were installing the baseboard and Gene quickly offered to send someone out to fix it or just credit my card for an agreed upon amount (I took the credit). Gene was good to work with and the finished product is great so I would recommend Design Expo and use them again.

Took measurements and gave me an estimate the first day. Scott brought samples for me to choose Gave me a nice price for the hardwood Workers were on time and moved all my furniture from shoes(which I have a lot of) to dressers. Tiled two bathrooms
Description of Work: I cant say enough how pleased I am with my hardwood floors. Scott was great in explaining everything that would be done in my home. I have a three level townhome with 2 sets of stairs and they all look GORGEOUS. I was at awe at how fast and efficient the carpenters were, they never stopped until each room was finished. It took 4 days for the installlation on account of me changing my mind on adding an extra floor for installation and Scott made it happen anyway and Im so very pleased. I am still smiling at the outcome.

We were very pleased with the new flooring. Mr. Weaver was punctual in our meeting to get estimates. and provided useful information to help us make our decision as to which products to use. His crew arrived on time and worked very efficiently. They removed the carpet and installed the new laminate in one day, with minimum mess. They removed all the carpet debris and left the areas neat and clean. We're very happy with the way the work was done, and with how the new flooring improves the look of the family room and bedrooms. We would definitely recommend The Design Expo Flooring Center of Bowie.

See above. Great service, excellent product, perfect outcome.
Description of Work: We called the store and spoke with Gene and he invited us to the showroom to discuss our options for replacing the original 24 year old carpet in our home ( 4 bedrooms, staircase and 2 foyers ) We visited the Expo and Gene was very knowledgeable and after giving us options and info, he allowed us time to decide and choose what we might want. A sample was taken home and we made a decision and called him for an appointment for measurements. Gene is very professional and reliable. We felt were secure with the whole transaction. We had priced out comparable carpet and Expo's price as great, especially with the 10% Angie's List discount. He measured and we made a 1/3 deposit in late March,we received a call two days later and set an install date. My husband was home when the installers came and they worked all day. The rooms and stairs are beautiful and we have gotten many compliments. We had a wonderful experience from beginning to end.

They provided a good estimate of the work to be performed and the crew did a good job with the installation which included moving furniture. The crew did a good job protecting our furniture and not damaging anything during removal of old flooring. The crew did everything we asked of them. They did come up short on some laminate tile and had to return three days later to finish the job. That was due to the salesman trying to keep costs low and not having a lot of leftover pieces. The installer was 30 minutes late on the return date. I was very happy with the craftsmanship of the installer and the overall work ethic of him and his assistant.

The Pros: Scott was amazing to work with. He even went into the store during the hurricane so I could stop by and get flooring samples. They were prompt and efficient with work. The workmen cleaned up the area well. They did really well butting up the floor to the stairwell, walls and fireplace. Workmanship and service were on point. The Cons: "Engineered hardwood" is not like hardwood at all and shouldn't be marketed as so. It feels different, it looks different. The floor is "bouncy" because of the material that is put under it - I don't even like this "quiet walk" product and wonder if it is necessary. The pieces are glued together (horizontally) and so there is a section of floor that, while attached to the pieces next to it, is flexing as if it is not attached on the bottom (like a puzzle). We have barely used the room or moved furniture in, but the pieces seem to be scuffing easily (compared to the real hard wood in main area of the house). I called Scott and he said that he would come out and look at it if it didn't settle in. I believe he will, but I haven't had a chance to get him out yet. Evaluation: In the end, I didn't have the time or means to rip out the bad floor and put in a real floor so this is probably the best quality that I could have gotten under the circumstances. It is definitely better than the ratty, old carpet, so it is a plus. I'm not sure what I would have done differently. Also, the service was great - and that means a lot to me.
Description of Work: Task: Rip out the old stained carpet in my rec room (about 800 square feet) and replace it with hardwood flooring Set up: I called and Scott, the co-owner picked up. We spoke for a while and he came right over. He measured the room himself and explained the process. Turns out I have asbestos flooring under the carpet (yikes) so he could only cover it with "engineered hardwood" rather than actual hardwood. He assured me that it would be the same.

The process started with me calling the office for an estimate on Saturday and Gene came out Monday. He explained our options and we picked a sample and scheduled installation for the following Saturday. That process was so easy and I appreciated it. The team of 2 showed up on time, they were actually about 15 minutes earlier than expected. They were friendly and immediately got work. The overall process took about 5-6 hours. They were professional and knew exactly what they were doing. The only thing I do not like is that they install some sort of rubber or foam underneath and my hardwood floors are bouncy almost rubber like. The installation guy explained this but I thought he meant it would only last a few days. I have never walked on hard wood flooring that bounced before. But, I guess thats just the way it's suppossed to be. Overall I am happy with our purchase but when we use them again, I am going to ask about the rubber padding underneath. I would like to eliminate that if a all possible because it's just weird.

They did a really good job. We were really happy with what they did. He listened to exactly what I wanted and did it how I asked perfectly. He had a team come over to do some moulding for us as well. I am satisfied with the final product. He was very thorough about the different types of carpet and what he recommended. He gave us an Angie's List discount. He also was very willing to work around our schedule. They also rearranged our furnature back to the way we had requested.

Gene was fabulous to work with , he well informe and was patient and thoughtful and was giving me some added pointers about installation day. He spent a couple of hours with me and when I changed my mind to fully replacing flooring versus refinishing ( and he had prepared the quote) he was as gracious as could be. The only thing I caution everyone about regarding the installation is this- I firmly believe in getting folks proficient in English to service my home as I'm not bilingual so we need to communicate. The main installer, (Mr Jones I believe had adequate english skills ( I was assured of that ) but he left the job a couple of times, twice to get lunch, and I was left with a very sweet hardworking young man who had been in the states only 2 months from ....think it was Honduras, and hardly knew a word of english. He kept working but if I need him to do something different on his installation , I would have to struggle with explanation. While hard working, Mr Jones did forget or ....didn't hear when I explained to him I needed to have something painted before her added the trim to the powder room, so he put the trim in prematurely, seemd unhappy when i later corrected hm. He is a very quiet and rather terse fellow so a bit uncomfortable to try and direct, at least for me. I encourage folks to do as Gene had said some people do, and that is inspect each plank before installing as you may want to reject some planks or have them put in out of the way spots, as you cannot expect them ( install team ) to consider aesthetics to that level. I didn't want to loom over them so skipped this step as the first few feet of installed distressed planks looked great, but...had I taken the time there were at least 3 I would have had them skip as they were too distress looking for the middle of the room. I HIGHLY encourage folks to inspect planks before installed, as pulling up after its been locked in will likely be meet with legitimate frustration by installation team. Also write out any special instructions for day of installation so you can clearly show then you notified them of what you wanted. Carefully go over the whole floor before signing work order satisfaction, I have a few things that needed finishing, and a small part of trim recut as it didn't look right, that also forgot to secure a small piece of trimat the top of the landing. Carefully review the work and details so you can get it done right before you sign and before they leave. The installation was supposed to be one day, but ended up being two.My B rating is really all installation related, not on Gene's part. I'd reccomend the company but take note for installation day. The N/A related to price is because I didn't comparatively shop so I cannot speak to that.I believe I was give extra discount due to Angie's list, but was that still cheaper than others I can't say.

We were planning to put wood look laminate flooring in the basement of our home. Being new to the area, I researched flooring companies on and off Angie's list and found Design Expo. I got estimates from a few companies, but my experience with Scott was by far the easiest. Scott thoroughly explained the pros and cons of my flooring options, measured the basement and gave me a full start to finish estimate making all the information clear so there would be no surprises. He was even nice enough to leave a few samples so I could show my husband when he returned from work. Unfortunately, a week later we discovered a leak in the basement, which made us decide against laminate wood flooring. But Scott was nice enough to give me an estimate over the phone for ceramic which we're considering after the leak issue has been resolved. I would certainly call them first for future flooring needs.

In the end, we got a nice floor which has held up well, and I would probably use them again, but it was a bit of a bumpy ride. The sales experience was generally positive. We were shown a number of options and allowed to take home lots of samples. We were getting a kitchen/dining area laminate floor and also ceramic tiles in two small bathrooms. I didn't feel pressured to buy anything in particular and we were given honest opinions on the various options. So going into the installation it all looked good. That's when the trouble started. We were assured on several occasions that it would only take one day to do all three floors. Two people showed up, and they did work hard. But towards the end of the day, they realized that the kitchen floor had been mis-measured and they didn't have enough material to finish. That was late in the afternoon. For awhile it looked like there wasn't any flooring available and they were going to have to wait as much as a week (and me with a partially finished floor) to get it. Luckily, they found some, and I was assured (and I was apparently supposed to appreciate this kindness) that I wouldn't be charged for the extra flooring. That's good since I wouldn't have paid it anyway. How hard is it to measure a floor and buy enough to cover it? They came back the next day and finished the floor. The bathrooms also weren't finished by 10:00 on the first day, so they also had to come back, but did finish the second day, in the evening. However, when we went upstairs to put our stuff back in the bathrooms, we discovered that both toilets were leaking from the supply lines. So I had to call the next day and get them back yet again. While I understand that the toilets were old and leaks happen, I can't imagine that it wasn't apparent when the installation people left that they were leaking, and yet we weren't told about it. So in the end, they did fix everything to our satisfaction, but it took three days, not one, and it was not exactly stress free!

The company tore up the old carpet in my 30-yr old townhouse (some of it original) and put down oak hardwood floors. The job was professional, the people came on time and did the job in the time stated, did not go over budget, and the floors looked great! I was in the process of selling the townhouse and it really made a difference the both the way things looked and, I am quite certain, the offering price I ultimately received. I would highly recommend this company for any flooring needs.

This involved the entire upstairs (three bedrooms, the hall, and closets, including the linen closet). This was the FOURTH company we contacted to try to get the flooring replaced in our daughter's bedroom. One place didn't show to do the measurements. A second place came to measure, but never got back to us with a price. A third place gave us a price, but didn't do a good job of communicating with us about the cost. Design Expo was different. They came promptly to measure the room, and sat down with me to show me exactly what they were charging and why. They delivered the wood on time so it could come to equilibrium with the humidity of the house. The installers arrived on time to do the work; they worked straight through for six hours, never asking for anything during the install. The new floor looks great! I am totally satisfied.

I can't rave enough about the services of Scott, the salesman, and Eric and Mike, the floor installers. I received estimates from 4 other companies on Angie's List and all hesitated or refused to work on the 2-story stairway, some claiming that only a carpenter could do the stairway. Scott didn't hesitate having installed many hard wood stairways and did an excellent job. His estimate beat the others since he included the stairway. Scott was extremely flexible in that I contracted with him on 6/19/12 but he couldn't begin the work until 9/10/12 to accomodate my kitchen renovation. He worked well with my kitchen renovator, another contractor, and wasn't pushy. Eric and Mike started the job on 9/10/12 and finished on 9/20/12. This was a mammoth job and they worked long and hard hours. They were as neat as anyone could be on a job of this magnitude. I will rehire them to install similar hard wood in my 4 bedrooms.
Description of Work: Removed old carpet, prefinished wood and laminate and installed solid unfinished oak floorings throughout 1st floor, 2-story stairway to 2nd floor and 2nd floor hallway. This included moving all furniture, sanding, staining of all new wood and exisiting oak foyer flooring and powder room to match.

I really liked that Gene came out to the house to look at what needed to be done and brought carpet samples with him. It was much easier to pick something out when you could see how it would look at the actual location. None of the other places I contacted for estimates would come to the house; we had to go to their showroom. Also, this was a very competitive estimate; I couple of the other places I contacted were considerably more expensive, for what was a fairly small job. I also appreciated that Gene made some very good suggestions that I would not have thought of otherwise. For example, there was about a 2 inch piece of rebar sticking out at the bottom of the steps and he suggested having someone cut that off before new carpet was installed. There also was a gap between the bottom step and the sidewalk and he suggested having a mason come out and fill that in, so that it would look nicer once the carpet was put down. I took his advice and it really did make the whole area look so much more finished and attractive. The installers came out right on time and got to work. They had warned me a couple of days ahead that it might rain, but from the forecasts I was seeing, it was only a 30% chance. Sure enough, they were just finishing up when it started to rain. They covered the area with heavy plastic to protect it, which I appreciated. The next day when I took the plastic up, I noticed there was about a quarter-sized dollop of glue on top of the one step. There also were lots of scraps of carpet laying around from when they were cutting the carpet to install it. I believe the issue was they were trying to finish and get the area covered before the rain really came down and so didn't have a chance to properly clean up. I called Gene and he sent them out a couple of days later to clean the glue spot off the carpet and reglue one small area that didn't take, again probably because of the rain. Despite that little hiccup, which they promptly corrected, I'm very satisfied with the job they did and would hire them again. The steps look beautiful now!
Description of Work: Previous owners had covered the two concrete steps and landing leading up to the front door in green felt carpeting, which had torn in places and was discolored. They removed the old carpet and laid down the new outdoor carpet we had selected.
