This is our second time using Spartan - the first time was approximately 2 months ago for the same problem - our basement floor drain backing up and overflowing whenever we ran any significant amount of water like shower, dishwasher, W/D, etc. Overall, it went well - they arrived the same day that I called (both times) and performed the work with not much disruption to the household. The men were friendly and informative. Ultimately, the problem seems to have been solved. My lower score is for cost as we were charged for both jobs, even though this was a return for the same problem that was not taken care of properly the first time (he snaked via a pipe in the basement and didn't access the main sewer line to clear the debris). The two men who showed up for the second visit did some problem solving and determined what was wrong and what needed to be done. This just wasn't done as well by the person sent out the first time. I could have been fine with the situation given their quick response, but we were charged full price for both jobs. I was able to bring it down a bit by asking for a discount on second job (owner offered only -$30) and also using a coupon from their website on the first job (-$20). Overall, it was quite an expensive blockage - $440 spent in total on both jobs.
Description of Work: Snaked clogged sewer line from upstairs via toilet; removed/re-installed toilet for access.

It was a great experience. Testing was extremely thorough on all aspects focusing in particular on the efficiency of windows, doors and HVAC system. I learned a great deal about many areas of my house that require updates to greatly improve air flow efficiency. Frank, from Spartan, also discovered a gas leak at my furnace as well as improper, and possibly life threatening, installation of my water heater. Spartan provided a report after and also a bid to complete all the updates. The bid was detailed enough that I could choose to do the work my self or have anyone else do it.
Description of Work: Performed a whole house energy efficiency audit.

Called because of a drain clogged in my basement. They send 2 plumbers who told me that will cost 225$/hour. After one hour they were done and left, 2 weeks later when the rain come, the drain is clogged again. They have told me they had a 30 days warranties, I first called and they want to send someone I would pay, I said nope, I would speak to the manager. After speaking to the manager she agree my warranties was valid. They send another plumber, he spent 3+ hours trying to and quot;fixand quot; the issue but was not succesful, instead he broke a toilet that was working perfectly fine (I had to pay another plumber $330 to fix that). And he had the audacy to show me a bill of $600 to pay for his time when he did not do the job!!! The next day their supervisor called to said they will not be coming back to fix the issue!! so I have paid 555$ so far and the problem is still there! I am not sure they guy knew what he was doing!! DONT USE THEM.

A plumber and his assistant came approximately when they said they would with the new tank. The old tank drain was plugged with sediment and our basement has no floor drain, so they needed to move it to the outside entrance which has a drain. The hand truck they had was clearly inadequate for the job. The tank - full - dropped onto the plumber, injuring his leg. It proceeded to empty out the top onto our finished basement laminate flooring. We got a hose onto the top and managed to get most of the water out the door. The plumber called his office to ask for help. So did we when we thought help wasn't coming fast enough as well as to complain about the water on our nearly new flooring. We used all the old towels we own as well as our own shop vac to mop up the water. Three more Spartan employees came, a vice president to look over the situation, and two plumbers to help with moving the old tank and do the drain snaking. The new tank was installed but within a few hours it was obvious it wasn't working. Or perhaps it had worked for a very short time and then failed. The heater has two elements, and the upper one failed. The next day Spartan sent another plumber who rewired the tank to use the lower element as a temporary fix until he came back at a later date with an assistant and installed the replacement element. It took 7 plumbers to replace one water heater. This would have been avoided if the plumber had a hand truck strong enough to hold a full water tank. We also thought they should be better prepared to mop up spills. Once everything dried for a few days we found there was no damage to the flooring. The hot water heater is working quite well. We are satisfied with the work and would have no hesitation about calling them again if we need plumbing service.
Description of Work: We had a 23-year old 82-gal water heater that was leaking. We wanted to replace it with a very specific (and expensive!) one. Spartan's first estimate was for the wrong heater, caused, we were told, by the supplier being confused. They corrected the estimate and we decided to go ahead with it. We also needed two slow drains snaked. The water heater was replaced and the new one is fine. One drain was snaked, the other was determined to be a broken stopper and not repairable. We will eventually replace it.

They were fine. They were good. They were not quite as professional as some other companies, but they did the job well. They charged $300 for the job. They are a little-known company. They were okay. They came out on time and did the job. I have not had any complaints with the job. I didn’t call them as an emergency, even though they came out the very day that I had called them. I will use them again in the future.

My downstairs toilet was backed up to a standstill. It's right near the main drain pipe leaving the house, through which all outgoing water exits; so when there's a blockage in that drain pipe, it causes that toilet to back up and often overflow. This had happened a couple years ago, soon after I bought the house, because of a running trap just outside the house, in the back yard, going toward the sewer pipe in the alley. I had that running trap dug up and replaced, and it hadn't happened since, until now. Whatever the cause, it was at a standstill. I called Spartan at about 3 pm; their team arrived by 4. It was cold and raining steadily, but when I showed them the access pipe in the backyard, they went right to work and cleared the blockage within 20 minutes or so. I was happy with how quickly the problem was resolved. The price was never discussed beforehand, nor was it ever explained, and for this I bear equal responsibility--I forgot to ask. I don't know if 295 is reasonable for this service or not. They came promptly and solved the problem, but then, it wasn't after-hours, and it didn't take them more than an hour. So it's hard to say what it should have cost. They should have told me the price when they arrived and saw what needed to be done. Nonetheless, the problem was resolved quickly, and I could once again use water in my home. So I was happy with the service.

Our outdoor drain, next to our below-ground basement entrance was backed up and overflowing with sewage sludge - very very perturbing, I can assure people. (But better than it coming up in the basement or bathtub!) We were about to rent out our basement unit - and because of the clog, the toilet there wasn't functioning, and the bathroom smelled. I had tried to use a drain snake myself but this was ineffective and, never having done it before, could not make it go in more than a few feet. Called one plumber, but the scheduling was difficult, and they also said it would probably take two guys for the job. Called Spartan around 4 pm, and they said they'd have a technician out that evening. Very professional. Quoted me a price over the phone and then they even charged me a bit less in the end. Brandon did the job and was very professional. It took about 45 minutes, he fed in about 60' of snake, and let me say it was a HUGE relief to see the mess drain away. He even helped me clean up the area around it after the deed was done. He also explained the whole procedure, and gave me a quote for follow-up work using video, etc. to diagnose the exact nature of the problem. This is my first time with this type of problem, so not sure what a 'good price' is, but in retrospect, seemed kind of expensive. 5 days later, the drain was clogged again, unfortunately. I know they don't guarantee their work, but this was quite disappointing nonetheless. Hired a different plumber the next time, who came with a much larger auger.

I am a landlord, so its very important to have reliable people to call when you need to fix something for a tenant. This is my first time using Angie's List and I was immediately drawn to use Spartan for the services. When I called to get information, the customer service rep who answered the phone, Serena, was very patient and informative. She told me all the estimated costs up front and advised me that they would call before the plumber got there. The plumber called me before beginning the job to tell me a revised estimate and waited until I gave the OK. Less than 90 minutes letter the job was complete and they called me back to let me know it was cheaper than first estimated. which was great!. I am usually about using services such as these just because of the many bad jobs I have experienced in the past. But I was exceptionally impressed with Spartan, should I need to utilize plumbing services in the future I will definitely call them.

We cannot be more happy with the service received. From the start, the phone conversation was extremely polite and professional, and even so we called them at noon, they still showed up that same afternoon. The service was impeccable. The technician who came to our rescue was also very professional and polite. After he was done, he cleaned the area and even gave us some tips on how to keep the pipes unclogged. I will for sure recommend and use their services again if we have another pipes issue in the house.
Description of Work: The sink in the kitchen was backing up water from the washing machine. So the technician who came used a "snake" to unclog it and everything went back to normal.

Good. I called at 10 in the morning (after another plumber had cancelled on me) and they were able to come out that afternoon. They called me at work an hour before their arrival, so I didn't have to sit at home and wait for them. They asked me about coupons before charging me, which reminded me about the $20 off coupon I had printed from their website.

The boiler was cutting itself off and not running properly. He came and said that the boiler needed to be replaced, it was having a problem with the safety f. He went on to explain that they do not work on this type of boiler, but they could replace it for $6200.00. I had someone else take a look at boiler and they discovered that by cleaning a small switch they could fix the problem. My boiler has been running ever since.

I emailed Spartan and asked for an estimate..the next morning I got a phone call (message) with a rep calling to schedule service (started out well). I had a dr. appt in the morning so did not call back until about 10:30 am or so. The woman I spoke to said that I was on the schedule and when the plumber was done with current job she would send him over. No one ever called back and no one showed up. I called a little after 5pm and spoke to a nice rep who apologized and said he would have scheduling get back to me (he said he would try for that night but could not make a promise). No one called me that evening or the next day to re-schedule or apologize. Spent 3/4 of a day at home waiting and using leave for a no show.

The plumber arrived on time and fixed the problems in a reasonable amount of time. He was personable and professional. But way, way too expensive: More than $140/hour, plus there was a $140 charge for supplies that probably cost less than $30. I probably would not hire them again. I wonder if after-hours emergency calls are even more expensive?

After getting 4 price quotes, I went with Spartan which was consistent with the other plumbers that I contact. They were the closest and they picked up the phone immediately, no voice message. $300 seemed high to snake a drain, but that was the rate that everyone was giving. Aside from having to swallow the price, they were on time, responsive, in and out very quickly, and they were friendly. They charged the exact price that they quoted over the phone. I would call them again.

Some roof slate had fallen own our central air conditioning unit causing damage that resulted in it not running. The unit was at least 25 years old. I asked a neighbor who they used for such repairs and they recommended Spartan. Then a community phone book was delivered the next day, and lo and behold, there was a Spartan magnet on it. I took this as a sign :) and gave them a call. The office representative was very pleasant. Their (estimator) representative came the same day and as we expected, indicated that there were not part replacements for our unit. We had just gone through those hot days a week prior (when we discovered that the unit wasn't working) and appreciated the fact that they could do the work that very afternoon. First one worker came and he was joined by another. Both gentlemen were very courteous and professional. Installing the unit meant they had to do some work on the furnace as well. They made sure to wipe their feet on the rug and were sensitive about closing doors behind them. One of the workers walked me around to show me the work and to ensure we were satisfied. Maybe we should have gotten another opinion. One other company I called was going to charge a $160.00 fee to do an estimate - how many estimates would I want to pay for? There was no estimate fee with Spartan. What won us over was how quickly they were able to dispatch the estimator and then the workers. Now it's done, seems to be working better (though I'm waiting for warmer days) and we have a more efficient unit than we had. Also, because this damage was due to the snow storms we had in February, our insurance company is helping with reimbursement for our expenses.

They charged us by the hour. They said that we could utilize the person who came out for a whole hour and that's what we did. They did pretty good work. The only problem I had with them was that the caulking wasn't quite as neat as I thought it was going to be. They did a real good job on the stopper for the bathtub. We would recommend them and we would use them again. I am 70 years old taking care of a 92 year-old. I am handicapped and I can't really remember very well. They were punctual. I was really impressed with the professionalism that they provided at the office. They gave me a $45.00 discount just for being a member of Angie's List. The caulking was such a teeny job that you couldn't even consider it that much, but the rest of the work they did was good.

I contacted Spartan late Tuesday afternoon, April 6 to schedule an appointment. Scheduled for following morning, Wed, April 7 and was told that I would receive a call when the plumber would be on his way. Received at 7:40 am Wed, April 7 that the plumber was on his way. John arrived at 8:35 am. He informed me that the charge would be $250 an hour and that he if may have to drill a hole in order to remove the trap but that was not necessary. He drilled 50 feet and found some hard spots but the drain was cleared. He left at 9:45 am. He honored the coupon of taking $45 off of any job done by Spartan.

We got three bids and Spartan was considerably lower, they explained that they want to keep all their plumbers busy and they have guys who do so many repiping jobs that they can do it a bit cheaper than other companies. They were extremely fast and cleaned up well, I was really impressed by the plumbers' and estimator's responsiveness. They also agreed to let us pay for half the job and then finance the rest, at NO INTEREST, a great service to us. They didn't provide as long a warranty as other companies 4 yrs compared to 20+ but they went up to six yrs when I asked AND they added three pipes to the warranty that were not replaced because vertical shower head pipes don't hold water and are thus less susceptible. It would have been extremely damaging and thus costly to repair the tile and drywall they would need to take out to replace these three vertical runs (one for each of 3 showers), so I'm satisfied these weren't replaced but still under warranty. Thus I can't have expected more from a contractor, they were fabulous. Just remember to not bother with cheaper copper substitutes, like PVC; cost savings probably won't be worth it. Also, all plumbers willl really need to take out a lot of drywall to get at all the pipes, so be prepared to spend a while putting up new drywall or hireing someone else to do it for you.
Description of Work: We had two pinhole leaks in our 35 yr old copper pipes and could only expect more, live in a part of Montgomery county where the stuff they put in the water and the minerals in the water corrode copper of the years. We decided to go a complete repiping to avoid future bills and damage behind walls.

My downspout drain was clogged, so water would backup out of the drain every time it rained. Wasn't sure how bad it was, so called Spartan. They were able to give estimate on the phone ($225/hr, time starting on arrival) and have team out to my home within a day. Team came out with electric snake equipment; they carefully removed downspout from drain and found that leaves were clogging the very top-most portion of the drain and some of the downspout. We tested water flow into the drain, and it was great. They determined there was no reason to use the snake, and so they only charged for a service call! I appreciated their honesty not doing more work than was necessary or causing more wear and tear on the old pipes than was necessary. They then carefully put the downspout back together. Tonight, during the torrential downpours, I went out and the drain pipe area is bone dry. I was very pleased with the customer service and the final result. One very minor item: they did arrive slightly after the scheduled time window -- an advance call from them to that effect would have been great. But after I asked them to call me when they would be on their way, they did so. (This really wasn't a big deal because whenever I schedule times with any people to do work I always budget extra time beyond the window. Plus, I felt like they did their best to squeeze me into their schedule on short notice, so I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of lateness in return.) Overall, I would definitely use again and recommend them.

The plumbers were professional and courteous, and knew what they were doing. They arrived in the expected window and explained what they were doing all along. As I watched, I realized I could have done this myself, but that's fine; I got them there to put my mind at ease. I just thought $45 for a valve I could probably have bought myself for less than $10, plus $154 in labor for a little over a half hour's work was a bit much, but I don;t have a lot of experience in such things. Maybe that's the going rate.

Overall, they did a good job at the work they said they would do, but they left a bit of a mess. The floor was covered in debris after they left and they didn't put anything back under the sink. As I went to clean up after them, I realized that they left the now defunct garbage disposal attached to a live power source under the sink. I called the dispatcher and they sent the guys back right away to remove it. It's not a huge deal and they did take care of it right away, but it kind of seemed sloppy. Total 1.5 hrs of work.
Description of Work: Kitchen sink was backed up so I called to have someone diagnose the problem. Spartan answered the phone right away and someone was able to come over within just a few hours which was a relief. Turns out we needed a new garbage disposal, but the 'book rate' quoted for their disposal was too expensive so we decided to just remove the disposal and install regular drain piping. Summary scope of work: removed old garbage disposal, installed new regular drain piping and snaked out the upstairs tub.

On a snowy Saturday morning Wade, from Spartan Plumbing, arrived within the hour of my call just as the scheduler had promised. My kitchen sink was quickly unclogged. Wade was extremely professional and did a fine job cleaning up after the drain was unclogged. Thank you, Spartan, for rescuing us so promptly on a very snowy day. I used the $45 Angies list coupon for this service.
Description of Work: My kitchen sink was clogged. The sink was 3/4 full of water. Wade emptied the water from the sink and snaked the drain.
