I used Griffin a few years ago to do roof repairs, fix a leak that had water pouring through my kitchen, and install new gutters. They did a wonderful job, were easy to deal with, and were very professional. Last week they came out free of charge to fix a problem with a downspout caused by a gutter cleaner. I highly recommend Griffin.

They were the best suited for us. The knowledge and the way he explains things before, during and after and everything transpired exactly how he said and the pricing, there were no surprises and then then he found a big surprise and he took care of the problem. Their work is excellent.

I have been using them since 1986. I am very impressed with them. They give me a return customer discount. They make sure the work was done correctly. They do a great job and Matt Hoffman runs the company is very professional. They are a little expensive but they do not cut corners and they give a quality product.

I had spent more than a year trying to find a roofer who could find and fix the source of persistent leaks that were causing mold to spread across the ceiling of an upstairs bedroom in my 1892 Victorian located in Silver Spring. After several failed attempts by different contractors to resolve the problem, a roofer recommended W.E. Griffin as the best company in the area for handling complicated and difficult roofing jobs. This turned out to be some of the best advice I have ever received from a contractor. While W.E. Griffin is not cheap, in this case at least you get what you pay for. Several other roofers had either given up on the problem after quick fixes did not succeed or refused to even try in the first place, but W.E. Griffin looked at my job as a welcome challenge. When the job turned out to be more complicated than expected and damage to masonry chimneys was revealed, W.E. Griffin helped me deal with the mason (who I had selected and turned out to be a problem contractor, but that's another story). The bottom line is that the job was more difficult and complicated (not to mention expensive) than anyone could have anticipated, but W.E. Griffin was always extremely professional, did what they said they would do when they said they would do it, and helped to iron out several major problems encountered in the course of the job, and delivered excellent craftsmanship. Matt Hoffman, the manager, cares about quality, takes pride in his work, and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. If you want the cheapest roofing contractor around, you should probably look elsewhere, but if you care about your house and want your roof work to last, you should hire these guys.
Description of Work: Replaced roof and repaired structural weaknesses resulting from rotting wood and water damage in walls and framing of house. Installed new copper gutters and improved drainage from house.

Matt Hoffman and W.E. Griffin Roofing have been tending our slate roof and copper gutters for two years, and we have reviewed them previously. We just want to add that after the previous storm, we found that the weight of overhanging snow was causing some gutters (installed by another firm) to sag. Matt inspected them and said that he would have galvanized steel nails (rather than copper) driven through the gutter and fascia boards into every rafter tail. His crew came promptly and performed the repairs efficiently. In the latest storm, there is no sign of sagging in either the gutters installed by W.E. Griffin or in those recently repaired.
Description of Work: Repaired two sagging gutters.

This is part B on my Total Roof Overhaul, which began in 2011. Griffin replaced the rest of my main house roof. It has been two years since the main roof redo so when I say the roof has held up well through some truly horrific weather, I am definitely speaking from experience. Griffin started part A of my reroof in October 2011 and fixed what was a major, horrible leak in one section of my complicated roof. A few months after that, to my horror, I discovered the flat roof on our 1904 Victorian began leaking (this was not the section Griffin had repaired earlier). I laid tarps out in the attic and called Griffin immediately. We had to start Part B a little sooner than anticipated. The old rubber flat roof had given out (if you read my part A review you can see that many other roofing companies didn't think that the whole roof needed to be replaced. Well, they were wrong to say the least). Matt Hoffman came out and they got to work, uncovering some really unfortunate things. The gutters were a disaster, literally dangling off the house and the water was getting under the roof and had rotted several supporting beams. Matt suggested sistering the beams with new wood, replacing everything that had to be replaced and getting new gutters for the main house. We went with copper to match the valleys and flashing. They built copper chimney crickets in back of my newly rebuilt chimneys and added copper valleys where needed in the roof. The work took three weeks and my husband and I had to laugh that a new house being built down the street went up faster than our roof job. Just goes to show you the kind of craftsmanship that passes for "new construction" these days. W.E. Griffin stands by the quality of their work. About a year after the roof was replaced, I noticed what looked like a leak under what was a vent pipe in the bathroom. I called Matt and he sent someone out instantly who replaced the pipe collar. However, Matt came over to follow up and be sure that was really the issue?.and it turned out the pipe itself, when installed, was never sealed and was leaking. Matt had someone seal my pipes too. It has been a year and no problems since. This is the kind of quality follow-up you can expect. The roof now matches the house in terms of being ironclad. I remember one high rated roofing company telling me (Once I explained that I was trying to decide between their services and Griffin's) "Well, I mean you don't need your roof to be a fortress!" after I wondered why he wasn't recommending certain things (valleys, for example). Er?..yes, in fact, I DO want my roof to be a fortress. The weather events lately have reinforced that notion. Anyway, it's time to start part C of the roof (porches, breezeway, garage) and that's happening soon. I feel confident that I'm in for another satisfying experience which I will review when it is done and some time has passed.

Outstanding workmanship including design and fashioning of two copper scuppers for the ends of the valley between the two roof sections. Great attention to detail resulted a very short punch list which was rapidly completed. In addition worked with us to replace a small section of 20 year old irregularly cut vinyl siding which was exposed when prior J vinyl channel was removed. Worked to do it right rather than take a shortcut and reinstall a vinyl J channel which would collect water.
Description of Work: Replace 60 year old slate and shingle roof. Replaced underlayment as needed. Improved drainage by rebuilding valley between two roof sections. Provided new copper gutters when needed. Replaced all flashing with new copper flashing.

WE LOVE W E GRIFFIN! From the initial contact to the finality of the job they were nothing but professional, courteous, respectful, efficient, informative and transparent. W E Griffin replaced our entire roof, essentially providing us a new one that will out live us, the next home owners and the next after that. Their workmen went above and beyond what I have come to expect from laborers with their respect of our home and their attention to detail They not only removed all of the old blown-in insulation once it was exposed, they actually vacuumed the entire attic space. REALLY! We also had a terrific couple of days of rain during our roof replacement but experienced NO PROBLEMS due the care they took with tarping our entire exposed roof. Once the entire job was done, they even swept our entire back patio area. It was cleaner when they left than it was when they arrived. Specifics of the overall job: Removed existing main roof (excluding mansards), Removed existing sheathing Removed existing roof framing (decking, joists and everything) Reframed everything with pressure treated stock Installed new roof access hatch Furnished and installed 3/4" CDX plywood sheathing Furnished and installed 30lb UL underlayment Furnished and installed a new Copper flat seamed roof Fabricated and installed Copper curb cap Fabricated and installed 6 custom Copper decorative front side curb caps Furnished and installed one square of Bitumen for our neighbors roof, tied into the curb and furnished and installed Aluminum counter flashing Removed and discarded all debris. We can't recommend them enough. Our only regret is that they are such a pleasure to deal with, use the highest quality products and do such a great job that we won't be able to see them again.
Description of Work: This is the second job we have had W E Griffin do and they now we will never have to have anything done again! YEAH!! The first job was installing new copper roofs on our porches, bay windows and dormers, installing new copper gutters and downspouts, replacing installing new slate shingles on our mansards. This job was a complete replacement of our main roof AND IT WENT FANTASTIC!

Well I will try to stick to just the objective facts. I had a leak in the tin roof to my addition, the tin roof was about 20' x 8, if not smaller. Someone arrived on December 3rd to give me an estimate. I was told initially that the cost of the job would be in excess of $10,000 which was a surprise to me given the size of the roof. I was also told that another area of the roof, a small gable area that had been done in connection to another renovation had to be repaired because it was of very poor workmanship, which was a surprise. I was repeatedly told the job would be well over $10,000. I was told that the estimate would be emailed to me with a complete description of what was needed. I waited and waited and never received anything. In the mean time I contacted other roofers from Angie's list, all with high ratings. All of the estimates that I received from the roofers were under $5000. I also asked the roofers to take a look at the gable area that had been done and none of them noticed any serious problems. These roofers did note that I was very close to needing a roof to by home and that there were slates missing but again the cost to replace the roof to the addition was under $5000. I still had not received estimate from this company, so I went with one of the other companies. On December 20th, 17 days after the viewing of the property I received the estimate. The written estimate was approximately 14,500. This included new roof, repair to the gable area, replacing of slates. I had a leak in my roof, I agreed that the roof to the addition needed to be replace that is what I eventually had done. Again, I have tried to simply state the objective facts. When I received the estimate I told the company that I had gone with another roofer from Angie's list. I was told that I went with a company that was a fit for me, not sure what that meant exactly. I'm not sure how three roofer estimated a roofing job at under $5000 and this company estimated it at almost $15,000. Again these are just the objective facts. It took 17 days for the company to email me an estimate, I had the job completed by that time.

We appreciated the opportunity to meet with [member name removed]. A Proposal for Work was provided to [member name removed] ONLY (along with pictures of her existing rear addition roof taken during her initial evaluation). NO work was agreed to between [member name removed]and WE Griffin nor was any work done by WE Griffin at [member name removed] residence. At the initial meeting [member name removed] received a precise and detailed evaluation of her Rear Addition Roof along with a series of pictures as reference to the Rear Addition Roof issues. Two solutions were discussed with [member name removed]. [member name removed] was most interested in a complete solution which included Replacing a Flat Tin Roof with a new Flat Copper Flat Seam Roof, Removing Out-of-Square Roof Framing of the Rear Addition and Reframing properly, and other items detailed below. Our Complete and Total proposed solution exceeded the scope of work of the other estimates that [member name removed] received and because we proposed a larger and more comprehensive solution the estimated cost of our solution was greater than the estimated cost of the other proposals she received. [member name removed] was informed at the initial meeting that her proposal for a complete solution would bring the cost of the work to over 10k. We made no secret about the cost of the complete solution we were proposing whatsoever. As experts in the field we wouldn't want to leave any customer with a less than complete description of what needed to be done in order to repair the roof, as opposed to a more minimal report addressing some issues while leaving others unmentioned. In general, WE Griffin Roofing provides as comprehensive of an evaluation as possible and provides pictures, if appropriate, of any issue to the homeowner prior to an agreement to complete the work. As experts in the field we feel that part of our job is to educate homeowner, provide options/solutions to the homeowner, then respectfully wait for the homeowners decision and if prompted guide the homeowner to the best solution for them. Part of our job as well is to set proper expectations during the process which include (Costs, Time, General Work, Etc.). We stand by the quality of our work, the comprehensiveness of our estimates and the solutions they provide. We have many satisfied long time customers which lends to our high rating on Angies List. We apologize the estimate took longer than normal to be received (estimates are typically received by the homeowner between 1 and 7 days). This was an oversight on our part and a complete estimate along with photographs was forwarded as soon as this oversight was realized. We apologize that [member name removed] was unsatisfied with her estimate experience. Details are below: [member name removed] has a rear addition, a portion of which predated her ownership of the property (Flat Tin Roof) and a portion of which was built more recently after [member name removed] took possession of the property (Sloped Asphalt Shingle Roof). The Flat Tin Portion of the Rear Addition Roof (Old) was tied into the Sloped Asphalt Shingle Portion of the Rear Addition Roof (New) and then both portions are tied into the Main House Slate Roof. When the new Sloped Asphalt Shingle Rear Addition portion of the Roof was built it was neither tied into the Main House Slate Roof Properly nor the previously existing Flat Tin Roof. The work done to build the Sloped Asphalt Shingle Portion of the Addition was done in such a way that it compromised the Flat Tin Roof, the Main House Slate Roof, and because the Sloped Asphalt Shingle Rear Addition Roof was installed incorrectly as well this portion of the roof was also compromised. [member name removed] was provided with a very comprehensive evaluation at the time of her estimate. Pictures were taken and shown to [member name removed] at the time of the initial meeting of each of the failure points in the roof and each picture was explained to [member name removed]. In addition, we pointed out to [member name removed] that the framing done on the Sloped Asphalt Shingle Rear Addition Roof was so out of square that the plywood sheathing had to be bent in order to follow the out of square framing thus giving the roof a “turtle shell” look to it. [member name removed] expressed at the time that she was not surprised at the incorrectly done work, that though she personally liked the General Contractor who did the Rear Addition Build she had a number of quality issues with the work. She then detailed that she had some plumbing and electrical issues and that she had to have the entire electrical panel rewired (this contradicts the above statement in her review that she was surprised by the poor workmanship). After the initial evaluation two solutions were discussed with [member name removed]. [member name removed] was most interested in a complete solution which included Replacing the Flat Tin Roof with a new Flat Copper Flat Seam Roof over 30lb UL underlayment, Removing the Out of Square roof framing of the Rear Addition Sloped Asphalt Shingle Roof, Framing the Sloped Asphalt Shingle Portion of the Roof Square, Replacing the Sloped Asphalt Shingle Portion of the Roof’s Sheathing, Installing a new Asphalt Shingle Roof over Titanium Underlayment with all new Copper Valleys (one Valley would have been Locked and Soldered into the new Copper Roof and the opposite valley would have had a custom Copper Vent Pipe Collar what would have been Locked and Soldered into the Valley). The job also included the Replacement Slate needed to tie the rear addition (both Flat and Sloped potions) into the Main House Slate Roof. [member name removed] specifically asked how much this would cost her and we informed her the cost of the job would be north of ten thousand for a “complete” solution. Cost was then discussed to make sure that [member name removed] wanted to move forward with a formal estimate. [member name removed]expressed that she would like a written estimate and was told that one would be emailed to her with the estimated cost after the final figures had been completed. She was also told that the pictures taken would also be emailed to her for her reference and records. Both the estimate and pictures were emailed to [member name removed]. In short, [member name removed] received an estimate from us for a complete solution including a new Copper Flat Seam Roof to replace the existing compromised Tin Roof, Reframing the “Turtled” Asphalt Shingle Portion of the Roof, Installing new Plywood Sheathing and Asphalt Shingle to the Sloped Portion of the Rear Addition Roof and tying the entire Rear Addition properly into the Main House Slate Roof. WE Griffin’s solution for [member name removed] exceeded the scope of work of the other proposals she received in both work and materials used to complete the work (Copper Flat Seam Roof). Simply put we proposed a larger and more complete solution. We welcome any questions: Matt Hoffman WE Griffin Roofing 301 556 7364 cell mhoffman@wegriffinroofing.com

The roof that W. E. Griffin's craftsmen put on our home surpasses our original roof both aesthetically and structurally. We're very proud of it. Matt Hoffman was our contact person with the company, his technical expertise and desire to do the job correctly -- not just put on patches that would last a year or so -- were key reasons we chose W. E. Griffin. This company's niche is meticulous work designed to last; they're not aiming to be the most inexpensive in the short run but rather to provide value in the long run. My wife wants to keep our house for quite a while and perhaps pass it along to one of our children so W. E. Griffin fit well with our goals. When the Griffin crew removed our original shingles and underlayment they found that the builders had used thin plywood on top of rafters with the maximum allowable spacing between them. The intense sun we have in the summers had started to deteriorate the glue that holds together the layers making up the plywood so Matt suggested we replace it with new, thicker plywood. He thought that otherwise we would have new shingles nailed to a soggy foundation which is not a scenario for a long lasting roof. That's the kind of interaction we wanted with a home repair company: technically sound advice that will help us find the best solutions for upgrading and maintaining our home. We accepted the suggestion and had all the plywood replaced. Matt also found that our rafters were short which meant that our old roof ended just flush with the walls. He suggested extending the rafters out which creates proper eaves. Again we went with his suggestion. The new eaves will help keep rain off the exterior walls and windows (which we hope to replace soon) and really add some needed architectural detail to the house. W. E. Griffin also replaced our gutters, adding two new downspouts to make sure heavy rains go through the gutter system and don't just flow off the roof, another welcomed improvement. This company offers a much needed combination of technical insight and careful workmanship to implement that insight. I would recommend them to anyone, most especially to those looking for lasting solutions.
Description of Work: * removed existing shingles, underlayment, and plywood sheathing * installed new thicker plywood sheathing * installed copper flashing around chimney and vent pipes * installed new underlayment and shingles * extended eaves * replaced soffit board and soffits * replaced some deteriorated trim * replaced gutters and added two additional downspouts

I was very pleased with the extensive roof and gutter replacement work provided by W.E. Griffin Roofing Co. Right from the start, I was impressed with Matt Hoffman's detailed work estimate with his focus on quality, detail, and job satisfaction. For example, he stressed that they would only use new copper in all the valleys and chimney flashings. (Another roofer gave me and estimate in which he planned not to even replace the copper valleys!) I found the supervisor, Matt Hoffman, to be very easy to work with and appreciated his careful attention to detail. One of the most impressive elements of the Griffin work estimate was their commitment to a 10-year workmanship warranty. (Another roofer's estimate offered only a 5-year warranty.) Among some of the other aspects of Griffin's outstanding 2-week roofing operation were: 1. Daily clean-up was impeccable. My wife and I were really impressed with this over the entire two--week period. 2. They removed and reinstalled scaffolding within a few days at no extra charge to accommodate some needs of the family. 3. After the work was completed, I wanted two downspouts positioned differently. They returned promptly and repositioned them exactly as I requested.
Description of Work: 1. Replaced existing 60-year old slate roof with Certainteed Landmark Shingle. 2. Replaced slate cover on saddle between old house and 1988 addition with 100 new slate and and new copper. 3. Installed 30 new slates in existing slate roof left on 1988 addition. 3. Replaced all fascia and installed new copper gutters and downspouts and partial screens on original house structure.

We appreciated the opportunity to meet with this member. The estimate was for his mother's house and was for July 5th between 1000 and 1400. The estimate was not scheduled for Independence Day (July 4th) between 1200 and 1400 as stated above. I showed up for the estimate promptly at 1000 on July the 5th and woke him, he was most certainly not on his way to work. He explained that he lived with his mother and he was eager to walk the property with me and discuss the roof and various additions to the house that his father built. During the estimate I explained to him that he would received the estimate in about a week by email. The estimate was generated and emailed to him on July 12th. We received no communication from him after his appointment on July 5th. No work was performed for him or his mother on July 5th or after. Based upon the reviews, I thought W E Griffin would be our first choice. However, their bid was the highest received. For replacing a shingle roof in the old part of the house and an asphalt roof in the new part of the house, they proposed a $70,000 charge. We went with another roofer (Jack's), which appeared to have a lot of knowledge (and a dedicated slate roof crew) for $43,000 for the same job.

We appreciated the opportunity to bid on this member's Roof Replacement Job. Three estimates were provided to them for their roof replacement. Estimate #1 - Included replacing the slate portion of their roof with a new Architectural Asphalt Shingle Roof with all new Copper Valleys and Flashing and replacing a large flat dormer tin roof with a new Copper Flat Seam Roof for $28775. Estimate #2 - Included replacing the slate portion of their roof with a new DelCarmen Slate Roof with all new Copper Valleys and Flashing and replacing a large flat dormer tin roof with a new Copper Flat Seam Roof for $59300. Estimate #3 - Included replacing the rear addition asphalt shingled portion of the house with a new Architectural Asphalt Shingle Roof with all new Copper Valleys and Flashing for $11000. Note: Our Opinion - In the roofing business we typically find that from company to company insurance costs are about the same, labor rates are about the same and material costs are about the same. When there is a difference in the price of the job it is simply because we do a different (we would say superior) level of work that takes more time to accomplish, possibly additional material costs to accomplish and ultimately costs the consumer more initially. We will also state that our companies 80yr history has proven that our level work ultimately costs the consumer less over the course of the roof's life as our roofs "outlive" other contractors roofs. After several roofing companies told me what good condition by house's roof was in and how I had 10 years left with it, etc. I felt like I was living in the Twilight Zone when it would not stop leaking. We would get it patched only to watch the leak start again with every rain storm. Very frustrating, to say the least. I called W.E. Griffin and Matt Hoffman was over promptly. He saw what nobody else did....that the roof had been put on in such a cheap and shoddy manner, it didn't matter that the shingles were in technically good condition. The roof was a disaster. Since the project was enormous, Matt found a way to divide it so that we could do an entire reroof in different parts. This was part one. Once they removed the roof, they discovered the underlying plywood to be so rotted that one of the workers actually had his boot go through the rotten wood into my bathroom where the leak was. It was in dreadful condition and Griffin replaced all the plywood. They also alerted me to the terrible condition my chimneys were in, another oversight by every other roofing company. Fact is, the chimneys were crumbling. The house was built in 1904 so this wasn't terribly unexpected, but no other company even mentioned it). To prevent future leaking, Griffin put in a copper W valley to make sure the water could not slide down the steep roof and slide under the shingles in the valley. They completed the work in a week and cleaned up very nicely. It's been months and no more leaking. This roofing compamy knows their stuff and they do NOT TAKE SHORTCUTS. I am convinced that the only reason all these other roofing companies get business is because more people are interested in the job being done as fast and cheap as possible. All that does is create more work down the line. I have learned a thing or two about roofing just through talking to Matt Hoffman, who is more knowledgeable than all the other roofers I saw put together. And it is fairly eye- opening. Anyway, Griffin is currently doing the rest of the house and they will do every other roofing project (and carpentry project) i ever have. It makes me furious to think that this historic house we bought only six or seven months ago was rotting away under the shingles and no other roofing company could even understand why it was leaking! All I can say is Hoffman and W.E. Griffin make everyone else look like they do not know what the heck they are talking about. Bottom line, if you are interested in having your roof done right, go with Griffin. If you are interested in having your roof replaced every 12-13 years as your housing structure starts to rot away as long as it's done as cheaply as possible, then I don't know what to tell you!
Description of Work: They replaced a section of roof including plywood.

Mr. Griffin was very straightforward in providing his opinion of the problem with the roof and seemed very knowledgeable. His estimate was around the same as several others but I liked his obvious knowledge of roofing so I picked him. His men did a great job as described above.
Description of Work: The company repaired a fairly large section of my roof that was leaking and had rotten plywood under the shingles. They did the job quickly even though it snowed the night before. They actually removed the snow and began work. I did not even expect them to show up. They did a great job matching the new shingles and finished the job quickly. Most importantly they fixed the leaks.

Griffin is the best roofing company in the area, bar none. I gave them an A for price because, while not the cheapest, they are fair and far from the most expensive. They are professionals through and through. they know their stuff. They will not cut corners. They won't do the job if they can't do they job right and guarantee their work. My old roof had leaked for years. I had had many different roofers look at it and patch it. Then, after one huge storm, I had major, major damage. With Griffin, my luck changed. Matt Hoffman is a true professional. He knows his business, as do all of his crews. He's no-nonsense and they get the job done and they do it right. I can't recommend them highly enough. In fact, I do recommend them to everyone I know and am using them again on another project in another location.
Description of Work: They repaired a major leak in my 75-year old slate roof, identifying previous erroneous repairs with inferior and materials. They re-slated a portion of my very large roof and remade two leaky flat tin roofs with copper. I have survived major rain and snow storms since their work with ZERO problems. Excellent work.

I called Matt Hoffman. He returned my call promptly and came over within a couple of days to give me an estimate. It seemed reasonable enough for a roofing material that is quite expensive. I told him that we would like to go ahead. There was a delay in having them start the work, but I was not in any rush. The work looks beautiful. It was a very well done job by people who work with slate (not exactly easy to find). The invoice was slow in coming, but it was very clearly spelled out. I will definitely be using them again, though hope we won't need to for a while!
Description of Work: We have a slate roof that needed some attention. There were some missing and broken tiles, bent gutters, and bent and missing snow guards. Some of this was a result of last year's ice/snow storms, but some was older damage. Griffin roofing repaired and replaced all components.

They can be hard to get scheduled, but they do good work at a very low price. Mr. Griffin himself came out and got right down to business. He's not a chatty person. He just gets down to business and does the work.
Description of Work: We used WE Griffin Roofing for roofing. They did a roof inspection and replaced broken slates.

I think that they seemed to be very knowledgeable about what I needed done. Once the workers got here, they did a great job of getting the work done. He did not require any payment until the work was completely finished. He does not use any contracts though. We have been happy with their work. They had cleaned up nicely when they were finished. We would use them again.
Description of Work: They replaced the roof in the front of the house, and repaired flashing near an addition.
