Original install went well, with a few small problems corrected within the first several months. By March 2016, cracks along the joints between flagstones and flagstone and brick wall of home were evident. Contractor said this was due to extreme freezing/thawing during winter and refused to honor 2-year guarantee and make repairs. While extreme weather is a condition in the guarantee, I do not find this an acceptable excuse for two reasons: First, the winter may have been harsher than average but but I would not call it extreme. Extreme weather is a tornado demolishing the hardscaping. Second, masonry is in common use throughout regions that experience much harsher winter conditions than we do, such as New England. I will not be using this contractor again but you can draw your own conclusions.

Response from Capitol Hardscapes
The majority of the customers stone work was installed over 20 year old EXISTING concrete. The customer was told that cracks could form as a result of this application, however the customer decided to move forward anyway, possibly to save cost. The exclusion on the customers warranty is very clear and purposely placed for this reason. I am not sure what we could have done differently as we laid out all the pros and cons of the application well before the project started. We also gave the customer a heavily discounted rate to make repairs however the customer chose not to take advantage.

Capitol Hardscapes did a wonderful job. They were able to start the work promptly. The work was performed during the holiday season and much of it was done while I was traveling. We were able to keep in touch via email. They recommended a type of installation that provided for easier maintenance, which I accepted. They completed the job in a very timely manner and the results are beautiful. I have only good things to say about Capitol Hardscapes. They are an A+ company.

CS's pricing was competitive, the crew was professional, punctual. The owners are very responsive and care about the projects. They are available by email and phone and were on the job site to check on the work on multiple days/occasions. The crew cleaned up at the end of each day and took care to not disturb our existing landscaping. I would highly recommend Capitol Hardscapes and would use them again.

We were impressed by the crews professionalism and cheerful nature. The project was completed in exactly the time estimated and there were no issues with the work. We are very pleased. Chris was also responsive and professional. A pleasure to do business with overall.

Work took slightly longer than expected. Cleanup after final walk-through was 100%. The new back yard is absolutely stunning. Kevin, the business owner, was very professional, responsive, and with us at every step. We asked for several revisions and additions to the final plan before the work was done, and Kevin was always helpful, emailing us revised detailed plans for the patio. Choice of product was made at the business location, where Kevin has models of how it all comes together, making it easier to choose and plan. Kevin's work crews (up to 5 installers at a time) were friendly and hard working. We will gladly ask Kevin to do any future landscaping projects.
Description of Work: Installed a beautiful multi-level patio in our back yard using pavers. Work included low-voltage stair and wall lighting and installation of conduits for normal-home-voltage column lamps. A fair amount of landscaping preparation was necessary.

Chris was a gentleman from start to finish.
Description of Work: After talking with four contractors about redoing an irregular flagstone walkway that had just been laid this past year by another company, I narrowed down my choice to Chris Scango, one of the owners of Capitolhardscapes, and another contractor. Chris listened intently to my concerns as we viewed the walkway that was laid four times in the past year by a landscaper who clearly did not know how to use this material. Chris spent a good deal of time with me patiently explaining in great detail the steps in the process of redoing the flagstone areas. He also made suggestions on how to improve the present design. Chris was open to answering my questions via email and was extremely gracious when I told him that I would be going with another company. Why? Although Capitol Hardscapes has an A rating on Angie's List and photos of excellent work on its own site, Chris did tell me that his me his company has done only one project similar to mine in the past three years. Since working with irregular flagstone is challenging, I opted to give the contract to a company with considerable experience working with this particular product. If I had the option of using material with the more commonly used straight edges, I would have gone with Chris's company, as his pricing was better; I surely would be confident that Capitol Hardscapes would do the work properly.

rrWe met with Chris in September to discuss various options. Although we knew pretty much what we wanted, he was able to add important insights for our particular situation given his extensive experience. As we had planned a vacation that came in the middle of what would have been the completion, he was able to schedule the work so that the completion would occur after our return. We made a couple of changes which he was able to accommodate. Overall, Capitol Hardscapes listens to its customers and very professional. I would engage them again.

They encountered some very difficult roots, from a nearby Maple tree. Chris proposed an innovative solution, which was to raise up the overall level of the walkway, and then add fill dirt around the walkway. It was an innovative solution, resulting in far less root damage, and a walkway that was not as steep as it would have been. They brought in the fill dirt, seeded, and put straw on the area, with no extra charges. They also filled in and seeded an adjacent area, which I had been working on personally, but was not part of their job. From the start to the finish, we had very good communications and responsiveness from Chris Scango -- despite a very busy schedule. He also refereed us to an extremely capable company that handled our driveway re-paving job (Dominic's Paving). My wife and I strongly recommend Capital Hardscapes for similar jobs.

I found the contact information on Angie's list. Phoned and arranged for an estimate. I had had many estimates. Their's was certainly fair. They provided a brochure of the pavers they would use and took me pick out the color and layout I preferred. The crew sent was courteous and prompt. Management appeared to supervise the work and respond to questions I may have during the process. Since I felt a step would be better to reach the driveway from the lawn, the step was designed and inserted. The work was started and completed promptly.

They even did a few little extras with out additional charge. No headaches.

Someone came to provide a quote and I believe they were going to send me an email. I do not recall going over too much discussion of what my requirements (not that I was holding back...) with this person. I did not receive a quote anytime soon so I gave up on this company. Then one day I received a quote in the mail. The quote was maybe 45% ( 10 - 8k) more than anyone else. The quote did not include too many details that would give me an idea of why the price was so much higher than anyone elses. Also the quote was for EP Henry pavers which to me seems like one of the more economical pavers. So based on sketchy late and expensive quote I would not recommend this company to anyone given the cost and importance of getting a job like the patio done right the first time around.

Response from Capitol Hardscapes
At the time of the estimate the homeowner asked for a "budgetary proposal" for the work he wanted. When asked if he would like a detailed drawing and estimate for the project he declined saying he was just interested in getting a "ball park" idea of cost at that time. This is the first we heard from the Homeowner since the original site visit to the house. With a phone call our office, we would have been happy to discuss the proposal and provide more detail to the Homeowner. Unfortunately, we were never given the opportunity.

Our experience with Capitol Hardscape was wonderful -- better than we could have imagined. We wish we had found this firm sooner. .
Description of Work: Our front walk was in very bad condition. The stairs had sunk, and the walk was uneven, the gate of the stairs was steep and very difficult to climb. The walk was also very narrow and difficult to navigate. We had wanted to get the front walk and stairs replaced with a flagstone walk for years but saw more examples of bad stonework than good and were reluctant to procede. We also wanted to match the stone walk with the existing stone on entry and we wanted grey stone. (We have an old Chevy Chase home so we wanted the walk to be consistent with the period of the house. ) We called Capitol Hardscapes and we couldn't be happier with the result. Chris came out and gave us an estimate to replace and widen the walk, relace the stairs and provide a better gate for the stairs and walk. We had other esitimates but Capitol gave us the best rate, had the best reputation and examples of work that were consistent with the quality we wanted. We could not believe how quickly the work was scheduled and completed. Everyone at Capitol Hardscapes was polite, professional and very very neat. (We recently had our kitchen re-done and ended up having to dig up, re-landscpape and re-sod the entire side yard.) Capitol Hardscapes removed and widened our entire front walk and left all of the plantings and grass in great condition. We were amazed. We will definitely use Capitol Hardscapes again (I think I will spend the winter dreaming of a stone patio in the back yard)

Based on Angie?s List reports, we contacted CAPITOL HARDSCAPES in late July asking for a quote to remove the pavers and bricks on the front walkway and backyard patio and replace with flagstone on concrete. Greg Farrah met with us to discuss the project and make recommendations. Later we met with Greg at the quarry to see the flagstone he recommended. We mentioned the Angie?s List coupon to Greg, and he said he wasn?t aware of it but would discuss with the owners. Greg was very responsive and personable. We felt comfortable with the proposal. Upon signing the contract, we provided the Angie?s coupon and placed a third down. Work was to start within 3 weeks. We had a start date but, unfortunately, due to a family emergency, we requested it be postponed. CAPITOL HARDSCAPES worked with us to reschedule. Work started on August 31, and the demo went very quickly. The team worked without our being at home and left the yard neat after each day?s work. After 4 days, they were 50% complete, and we made our second payment. The project was delayed again because of poor weather conditions. Upon resuming, two teams worked steadily another 3 days, and the patio and walk were laid in place without a hitch. We were told they?d be back in a few days to do the final cleanup. On September 12, Chris Scango sent us a final bill and said the cleanup was scheduled for 3 days later. They would remove all the supplies and equipment and complete the job, at which time the final payment would be due. We informed Chris that the final bill did not show the Angie?s coupon credit. We told him we would not be home but would be happy to meet with a company representative in the evening to make the final payment, or we could place it in the mail. Chris acknowledged that his finance system did not have a way to credit the coupon but that we can deduct it from the amount owed. He also requested that we leave the final payment for his crew. Understanding that the weather caused a lot of delays and our exchanges with CAPITOL HARDSCAPES had been honorable, we left the check. Again the weather caused disruption so they didn?t complete the work as scheduled, but they did pick up the check on September 15. On September 19, we notified Chris that we were concerned about some voids in the under layer base and provided a punch-out list. We were told they would take care of it; however, again, the weather caused delays. At this point we were getting a bit nervous because we had paid in full yet the job was not complete. On September 29 the punch-out list was completed. We were still concerned about the voids, so Chris came to the house to meet with us. He apologized for the delays and for not following up on the punch-out list sooner. He assured us there should be no problems and said that he?d send us a 2-year warranty should there be any problems. We are still waiting for the warranty. We are happy with the finished project, and we recommend CAPITOL HARDSCAPES.

We had a 150-year-old stone wall that failed after multiple heavy rains in the spring. It was a dry stack wall and the repair area was about 20 feet or less. We hired this company because they said they had experience with dry stack. While we thought this company was pricey, another company wouldn't even give us an estimate. Furthermore, this company got the permits, which cost more than $400 and was included in the price, and as we are in the historic Georgetown district, that was no small feat. They showed up when they said they would, and completed the job in the time frame estimated. This wall bordered neigbors, who had concerns, and the company was very respectful and dealth with those concerns as requested by the neighbor. The workers were unobrustive and cleaned up after themselves. When I objected to the slant of the rebuilt wall, which was not slanted in the orginial wall, they came back rebuitl it so that it did not slant. They did not dry stack the wall (as I understand it), but reinforced it with concrete and steel rods where they cannot be seen. It looks great. It survived the earthquake of August 2011. They were very professional. They made sure i was satisfied, and I was. The contact person who dealt with me, Greg, was great. He made sure we knew what was going to happen, and then checked to make sure I was satisfied. The laborers were very hard working and did excellent work, despite the fact that it was the very hottest part of the year, while the city was issuing heat advisories.

We had our entire city townhouse backyard ripped up and replaced with two new patios, a wall and re-graded yard space. We met with Greg to talk through the project and we immediately trusted him. He delivered a drawing and quote within about two days, and revised both drawing and quote until we were ready to move forward. He was also upfront about the fact that the project would evolve based on the demolition and landscaping needs. Once we signed, they started within a week and finished less than 3 weeks later. We did need to adjust the plan more than once, but Greg, John and Chris made sure to keep us in the loop at all times and secure our approval for all changes. Our backyard is gorgeous, and we'd work with Capital Hardscape again in a second. We can't recommend them enough.
