Description of Work: A deck on the 2nd floor balcony of a row house in Mt. Pleasant. I searched for a long time for the project of about $15k-$25k. Steve Shultz from American Deck, as luck would have it, stopped by and the project started in March 2017. He met every requirement completed it in 2 weeks+. I love my deck and I am staying at this place for another 5 years. (He had other contractors to install French Door+transom in the bedroom leading to the deck. Amazing looking deck now)

This is Sean Conway, the owner. We apologize that your inquiry may have slipped through the cracks. A small company without a large office support team we sometimes miss calls and inquiries. I wish this wouldn't occur and we strive to work hard to see that we do contact all of those that contact us. We hope you found someone who could help you out with your project.

Description of Work: Installed an Admiral Spacemaker waterproof (to below) deck. Joe and John did the majority of the install work and I would recommend to anyone to request them for the job. They worked solidly and meticulously and were very pleasant to deal with. New deck looks absolutely great, solid as a rock. My old sunroom next to it now looks in need of an update. |It wasn't the cheapest quote, but the additional dry space below deck now is great and the quality of the product is high. I would definitely check with American Deck for a future project if it came up.

Description of Work: While the person at the main office was very nice, getting an appointment for someone to come out and review the job proved to difficult. Once a initial appointment was finally scheduled, it had to be cancelled at the last minute. Then I could not get someone to respond to my e-mails to coordinate a new meeting.

We apologize for the cancelled appointment. Sometimes this occurs. And sometimes connecting with folks with a phone call can be challenging. We need to speak to folks, most often, before securing an appt. We had difficulties reaching the client as well for a follow-up appointment. Sometimes, with everyone leading such busy lives, making a simple connection via phone can be a challenge. We're sorry we couldn't be of more assistance and hope that they found a contractor who could meet with them. We do try our very best to see that folks receive courteous, prompt service from us at all times. Thank you, Sean Conway, Owner of AD&P.

Working with Sean Conway, the owner, and his crew was a pleasure. Sean is extremely thorough and detailed. He is committed to meeting expectations and has an extreme amount of integrity for what he does. The upfront discussions were probably more prolonged with Sean then they would have been with another company but it was absolutely worth the time - we got a quality renovation for a price comensurate with the work. Sean prides himself with having a reputation as being fair without sacrificing quality - he lived up to his standards and exceded ours. Our deck renovation was very complicated - his crew performed well and communicated with us every step of the way. At no point did we feel that additional recommendations were in an effort to "upsell." We feel that American Deck and Patio is knowledgeable and honest. They build decks that not only look good but are SAFE and are built to last. We are so thankful we found them and would use them again.
Description of Work: American Deck and Patio built a new rail system around the perimeter of a very large and aging deck. They also assessed all other components of the deck (ie: floor boards, stairs, support, etc..) and made recommendations as to additional improvements for safety purposes. We met with 4 other contractors/companies and American Deck had the most comprehensive proposal - which meant that there would be less surprises along the way and a realistic budget.

I found them on Angie’s List. They quoted me about $16300. They were friendly. I don’t think I will use them since their pricing is kind of high compared to what I am looking for. They were very professional and straightforward. They seemed pretty knowledgeable. They gave me some ideas and I felt that they could get the job done.

Due to our requirements and those of the pool we had many things that needed to be considered during the design and build process. Sean was a great person to work with during each step. We had several meetings prior to signing the contract and Sean addressed our concerns. Once the contract was signed the crew showed up within days of the estimated start date (note - Sean was able to squeeze us in between other jobs already on the books). The main crew, Tom and Craig, were on site working every day from 8 am until 4 pm. They only exception to this was about two or three days of pouring rain. They were friendly, polite, and cleaned up every day. Additionally, they were well versed in the construction process, were always thinking ahead and made good decisions that resulted in a very nice end product. For example, I had a large span of about 10 feet wide X 8 feet high that needed to be screened. To do this properly two screens were ordered to fill the space. Tom measured the opening and ordered the screens in a way that when the two screens were installed (horizontally) you would not be able to see the screen panels join as they are hidden by the deck railing. This provided us with a very seamless look and we are very pleased. These types of decisions were made often and the overall product is better than we originally envisioned. The project completed on time and on budget (there were no last minute add-on costs).
Description of Work: The home already had a 16'X21' ft deck (uncovered). This deck was removed and in its place a 21'X24' screened-in deck structure was built. The new structure contained a portion of deck space (21' X 11') and a portion of a concrete pad 2' feet below grade. This screened-in porch was made to house an "Endless" pool that will be built on the concrete pad. The entire 21'X24' deck/pad is covered with a roof and screened-in. The deck was built with 6" cedar posts and trim, trex decking and pressure treated wood used for structure and railings.

From the initial visit, Sean impressed us with his promptness, knowledge and attention to detail. We called for a free estimate. He arrived on time and armed with all types of samples of both decking materials and rail systems. He explained the different options and how they responded to weather, pets and stains. We were really impressed that he didn't engage in a hard sale, but gave us a base price for our project and explained to us that decks were like cars, that is, you can get a basic or a deluxe package. He also spent almost a full hour with us just answering questions and explaining the whole process even before we had signed the contract. This was the first deck that my husband and I ever selected or had installed. Considering the number of options available was a bit like that feeling of walking into Home Depot for what you thought was just a nail, but find out means facing an entire aisle of choices. But, Sean was patient and helped us navigate the process. He sent us pictures of deck combinations used by other customers. He also responded to the myriad of questions that I had based on the design ideas discovered through a few internet searches. Ultimately, we chose ipe decking material, woodland brown railing system and iron pickets, plus a dry snap ceiling for under the deck. (yes, it was rather a deluxe package, but we have a small yard in the city and wanted to make it a signature feature of our house.) Jaime was the project leader for our project. He was great . . . efficient, clean and a craftsman. We live in a rowhouse in DC without alley access. So, Jaime and his partner had to carry all of the materials through a coal alley, about 3 feet wide running behind our fence. Yet, he always left everything clean and organized at the end of the day, which helped to minimize any potential inconvenience to the our neighbors. In exchange for a reduction in price, we agreed to allow the company to squeeze our relatively small project in between projects. Not including the expected delays due to the odd weather DC has been having this winter, as well as delays caused by having to order additional materials, the actual work on the project only took about five days. The following work was accomplished on separate days: demolishing preexisting flooring, rails and stairs; replacing rusted brackets on the joist and other foundational repairs; installing the decking materials and facade; installing the stairs, snap dry ;us drainage/gutter system, and insulation under the storage shed, and finishing the end of project check list. We were pleasantly surprised that the project was started and finished in such a short amount of time. During the project, Sean stopped by twice to personally inspect the work. I initially was unhappy with the following aspects of the final project and/or had questions: 1) how the drainage from the dry snap ceiling looked; 2) there didn't appear to be a screen over the drainage or gutter, so wasn't sure if there was cause to be concern that critters might find a point of access into our home; and 3) there were bulges in the dry snap ceiling and some portions seemed to be separating from the ceiling. Sean came out to discuss the issues. At first he seemed a bit annoyed by my having raised any questions when all he wanted to do was receive the final installment and move on to the next project. But, everyone has a bad moment, and he recovered quickly and nicely by addressing my questions and offering a solution to the identified concerns. In fact, on the same day of our meeting, he requested that Jaime install a narrow wood lattice over the gutter, a screen over the downspout in the garden, and additional nails to secure the siding. (apparently the warm days may have caused the composite that had been installed on colder day to expand which sometimes requires makes the previous nails fly out). Overall, we were and are extremely pleased with the end product and will definitely recommend Sean and his company to anyone in need of a new deck.
Description of Work: We had an old wood deck that came with the house. It was definitely on its last leg because some of the treads had become unstable.

I was quite satisfied with them. I felt they did a good job. The manager came out. He spent some time with me to make sure he understood what I was looking for and that they could give me what I was looking for. There was a question about painting some of the wood in particular. At first he said that would be beyond what they could do, but later on he found a way to work that in. He was very good about working with me to make sure that we were going to be happy with the final product. I don't think they had to pour any concrete in the backyard. They may have required that for the foundation of the fences, but I am not really sure. I wasn't there when they were doing that. It's hard for me to compare the price because I only had one other person look at it and give me a price and they were in the same ballpark. They did a very good job on the quality. There were some delays getting started but nothing that he didn't warn me about.

Fantastic work by Sean's team. He didn't hesitate to tackle my odd design request. Sean worked to get the permits and helped improve my design ideas. The work was completed on time and with a great attention to detail despite the snow storms!
Description of Work: We needed a deck built off of our second-floor kitchen door. Since our yard is oddly shaped, we needed a shed as well. We looked for a contractor that would build the shed in the space beneath the small deck. Sean's team removed the old concrete steps, poured a new pad, and built the deck/shed combination.

I only found 2 contractors that do this work to get bids from. The other had a similar price but was more difficult to communicate with and did not understand the special drainage issue I mentioned above or appreciate that we needed a different solution. Sean Conway came out to give us the estimate. He saw and understood the drainage issue without me having to explain it and we brainstormed together. He put the estimate in writing a few days later and was incredibly responsive throughout. He even offered to start earlier than the scheduled time because he had an unexpected opening. We could not take advantage of it, so his crew started as scheduled. We were not home during the work and returned from the weekend to find it all done. Sean called to see how we liked it and said he would come by to see it himself. When he did I pointed out a few odds and ends that needed to be addressed including smoothing out some landscaping dug up by a drain pipe, a gate door for the storage area and some other very minor things I noticed. He agreed and had no argument with me and those left over items were addressed in the next 2 days. The only minor constructive feedback is that the crew had to move some things around in the course of the work and broke a hurricane candle holder and a thermometer and did not put the furniture back when they were finished. I am sure if I had told Sean about it he would have addressed it, but it was a petty concern and perhaps my fault for leaving glass outside during construction. Thermometer was a cheapie that fell off the post, so no big deal. Sean was just a pleasure to deal with at every phase and I would highly recommend this company. Our patio under our deck is now like another room in our house and another place to entertain rain or shine. And we have a nice little waterproof storage area for firewood and tools.
Description of Work: American Deck is one of the few companies I could find that can put in an underdeck ceiling so that the area underneath your deck stays dry. American deck did this for us as well as adding risers to the stairs up to the deck and waterproofing the area under the stairs for a storage space. We did not choose to have the support beams of the deck also wrapped in the vinyl used on the ceiling. However, because of the configuration of our deck and patio, they had to design a different system of drainage than they would normally use and it worked out great.

PHENOMENAL. I cannot say enough about this company. The estimator/salesperson, Mr. Poole, came to our home in Rockville from PENNSYLVANIA numerous times, took the time to plan out the new deck, and was extremely responsive to our questions. The company owner/project manager, Sean Conway, was very helpful and respectful. The foreman of our project, Gill, was very friendly, very polite, very responsive, and incredibly professional. Even on the day they could not work on the deck because of the snow storm the night before, they came to the house JUST TO SHOVEL off the snow from the deck! They were here every weekday promptly at 7:30, and completed the entire project in about two-and-a-half weeks. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking to build a deck. We are so happy with their performance, we are now negotiating to have them build our patio as well.
Description of Work: We had an old, existing deck that we had American Deck demolish, and rebuild to code and smaller. We went from about a 1,000 square-foot deck to a 500 square-foot deck. They did all the demolition and hauling.

Ours was a weird project. At first, after the initial estimate and some small glitches with scheduling with Sean, we had scratched American Deck and Patio off of our list. However, after going back and reading all of their reviews again and reviewing all the material that Sean C. left with us, we contacted Sean to see about rescheduling another project review and estimate. Sean was very professional about the abrupt stop and then the re-start and showed up at his next availability and walked through every step of the project, the materials and the time table. Sean did a good job of keeping us updated on the special order items and always responded to my emails about the project start time. As there was a small delay in getting our support columns (which Sean kept us aware of), Sean was able to meet our needs of pushing the project back a week so as not to interfere with a social event at our home. Project kicked off and went very quickly with Javier and Jose getting the work done fast, efficiently and safely. They took the care to mount our mailbox for us and save all the items that were connected to the porch (flag, flagpole, holder, address numbering). The job went very well and Sean and his crew made all the small cosmetic detail changes we asked for in the final couple of days of the project so that the final project looked just as we wanted. In full disclosure, I initially gave Sean and American Deck a poor review on Angie's List due to the initial quote we received and the glitches that were mentioned earlier. However, after contracting with them, I assured Sean, at his request, that I would give my full assessment of their performance and work and resubmit my review to AL. The only place that I did not give American Deck and Patio an 'A' was on Price. Although I do believe that their price was fair and Sean went through exactly what those costs were for each part of the project, I felt an 'A' meant that I was totally comfortable with the price...and I still wish/thought/hoped it could have been lower. BUT -- the work was efficient and professional and the look is exactly as was sketched/diagrammed out and to our specifications. The timetable was met. And the crew was polite, mindful, professional, and kept the area very clean and clear of hazards. In the end, the best endorsement I can give Sean/American Deck and Patio is that after having our porch done, I would recommend them to others without hesitation.
Description of Work: American Deck and Patio replaced our front, covered porch in full. This included repair/replace old, rotted joists, new composite, tongue-in-groove floorboards, new railings, steps, banisters and support columns. This project took about 2 weeks, which is exactly what was estimated. Jose and Javier, the work team, worked very hard and very effectively to minimize inconvenience. The worksite was cleaned up and all materials stored away at the end of every day. The crew was always on-site at the time they said they would be (bright and early too), and worked very hard to get the work done as quickly as possible. The worksite was cleaned up entirely at the end of the project and a walkthrough was done with the Project Manager, John and the Company Owner, Sean, at the beginning, middle and end of the project.

I am the owner, Sean C, and all above is true. Regarding the contact number, I failed to note that a number to reach the client was at the bottom of his contact info attache to his email. So, I did ask for a number to reach him as I wanted to speak to him (I find it very hard to understand that failure to notice a # and request it, that this should be held against me?). Secondly, I was very delayed in getting the proposal to the client. As I explained and apologized, I was absoutely slammed with folks looking to contract with my company. As a small company where I am the owner and face of the company, as well as a committed father and husband, I simply don't have enough time in the day to tackle all that I must do. So I make choices. I chose to devote my time to those who had projects we were working on and devote my time to those that had proposals in hand, and wanted to contract with me. While I hate to lose business, I must focus my attentions to those that have projects in the ground or are pending. I did forward the proposal to the customer with an explanation, as well as an apology. Furthermore, I told him that we were now quoting 8 weeks out due to the sheer amount of work that had come in and expressed my apologies that I had taken so long to get back to him. I can take the criticism but feel that this report left out important details. I fell short on the time I stated I would send out the proposal. But I DID send it out...along with an apology and an explanation. I also then followed up numerous times to make certain the customer recieved it and to see if they had any questions or concerns. I take great pride in attempting to deliver a quality project at a competitive price while extending courteous and professional service to any and all folks I meet. I don't always succeed but I consistently try. And I apologize when I fall short. Afterall, I am human.

The job went through without a hitch. John answered every call and e-mail I sent him promptly.
Description of Work: Build stairs from the existing deck to a new patio extension they also installed. The stairs included night lighting. They also constructed a rock pathway and platform around a hot tub.
The demolition of the existing deck was done efficiently and carefully, without any damage to the adjacent expensive garden. The construction of the sunroom is solid and perfect in all details. We were amazed at the perfect fitting of the two portions of the walls when they were joined together at one corner. The siding of the sunroom was seamlessly adapted to that of the rest of the house; so was the roof of the sunroom to the side of the house. Best of all was the interior details which included the framing of the chimney box and finished with an elegant stone veneer. The flooring of the sunroom merged seamlessly with that of the adjacent living room. The down spout drainage of the sunroom was redirected away from the main structure towards the woods. The work on the patio, done in a week and a half, included a decorative lattice around the HVAC unit; it is beautifully joined to the garden and has provided another elegant space for us and our guests. This was long and hard work, but the team was always professional, competent and friendly. Our primary contact, Mr. Sean Conway did his utmost to respond to all details and concerns for the entire project, from project design to securing all necessary permits, selection of the best materials and equipment available in the market, and providing the best construction crew. Some delays in the work were due to unforeseeable circumstances and, a warning to all, what we thought were unexpected and unreasonable requests from the County inspectors. This sunroom, which is my "office' and reading room, from where I am writing these comments, looking out on the garden and the woods, is simply beautiful!!!
Description of Work: Demolished and replaced existing deck with an all-season sunroom which was finished with painted drywall and fitted with electrical switches and outlets. Installed maple hardwood floors and a separate heating/cooling system. 2 existing windows were reframed as entrances to the sunroom. Redid patio using existing flagstone set on cement base and mortared grouting.
