Excellent work. Very professional and patient with my delays in making decisions about the materials and railing. Completed the job in very little time and cleaned up well. The only negative at all was that initially I had to call a couple of times before I received a call back. I'd recommend if that happens you call again. After that I received regular updates and fast responses to any questions I had. I have no reservations in recommending them. I'm very pleased with the deck and all my dealings with American Deck.
Description of Work: Removed old deck boards and railing and installed new composite deck boards, expanded deck width and reinforced old lower joists. Provided excellent recommendation for welding company to make a custom metal railing.

The new decks are beautiful. My one complaint was that the job took longer than promised because because sufficient materials weren't ordered at the beginning of the job. However, the delay was worth the finished product.

Thank you for choosing our services. Yes, a bit of a hiccup in that we didn't bring in enough of the railing product, which was a special order. We appreciate your understanding and always strive to see that we limit the setbacks in all of our projects. We are most happy that you are happy with the end result. Sean spent a great deal of time on his first visit explaining pros and cons of the various brands and materials we were looking at. He knew we had had a very bad experience with the contractor and materials that were used the previous time so he took a lot of time explaining everything. we knew there might be some "surprises" when the foundation was uncovered and infant we did find that everything had rotted and rusted so had to be replaced. That said, the only criticism is that after the job was done someone was supposedtocome back to cover some visible nail holes and that was never done.. I cannot overemphasize the professionalism of and care taken by Sean and his crew. I could not have asked for more. Sean came back one more time before we finalized plans to answer any remaining questions and make any changes, of which there were a couple. The new deck is gorgeous and we all love it. I wouldnot hesitate to recommend American Deck to anybody.

The above process seemed really cut and dry and all nuts and bolts. But the end product, the screen porch with an open deck is something my husband and I are very proud of. We took at least four estimates before we contacted Sean Conway at American Deck & Patio. His professionalism, his honesty, and his thorough knowledge about the products and the process earned him the contract. I also had the pleasure of working with Mia Conway, Sean?s wife, who is part of the team and answered my questions and concerns on various occasions. From the beginning till end, Sean was always accessible, was easy to work with, and customer satisfaction was his top priority. In fact, there were some unforeseen obstacles when our deck and screen porch were being built. But every time Sean explained to us as to what was going on and how he was going to remedy it. When he was on site, he took detailed note of everything and if something was not to his liking, his crew had to dismantle it and do it again. It was comforting to know that Sean would do the right thing and not cut corners. The project turned out to be beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. Jaime and his crew worked diligently to finish the project on time in spite of the rain in May and June. Once they were done, they cleaned up the backyard and there was no trace that they had worked in there for almost two months. It was a wonderful experience working with Sean Conway and his team at American Deck & Patio.
Description of Work: Built a 14x14 screened porch with an open deck 12x14 on existing structure. Removed old decking, railing and stairs from the entire deck. Reinforced existing substructure and framing and brought up to current code standard. Added additional support posts and beam on the part where the new screen porch was built. Refurbished the whole deck with Prodigy C Select treated wood. Provided electrical package for the screened porch, which included the rough in for one fan/light, one double switch to operate it, and installation of one duplex outlet. Installed motion detector light to illuminate the stairs as well as the egress area out side of door from the screen porch.

Thank you for your very kind words. We did experience quite a few hiccups with your project and I appreciate your understanding throughout the process. Life throws us curve balls from time to time and the customers who understand that we are only human, and not infallible, are truly a joy to work with when the project gets a bit off track. In the end, your porch turned out to be a beautiful addition to your home. I hope you and your family have many, many, many enjoyable years on it. And thanks again for being so understanding. We had several companies give a quote on the deck project at our house in NW DC. The decision came down to American Deck and another company, who eventually ended up getting our business. All other aspects of the quotes being comparable, the deciding factor was that the other company was able to start the job within a week. Even though we didn't end up going with American Deck, I wanted to put in a good word for him. Sean is a really took the time to discuss the project as well as the materials, which I really appreciated. In the days leading up to us making our decision, Sean was responsive and very helpful answering questions about the quote. If you're considering building a deck, I highly recommend you give Sean a chance to give you a quote!

Sean and his project lead Ivan were great to work with, very responsive to our ideas and accommodating of our vision of the decks. Ivan had exceptional attention to detail and his workmanship is top quality. Sean delivered the deck as envisioned on time and pretty much within budget. I think we all learned how difficult it is to retro fit an existing support structure but the end product is really a show piece and we could not be happier with our new decks! I would recommend Sean and his team without reservation.
Description of Work: Rebuilt a two story deck which required them to retro-fit the new decking and railing systems to the existing supports. They also added a two foot arc to the front of both decks that increased the usable space and added an interesting architectural detail to the decks.

Thank you for the kind words. The 'double-decker' deck was a handful but we were all proud of the end result. Ultimately, I elected not to use American Deck for my particular project. Regardless, I wanted to put in a good word for Sean and his professionalism. After meeting with me and walking through the project, I gave him a copy of the plans (currently going through permitting in DC) to provide a detailed estimate, which he sent over promptly. After we elected to use another vendor, Sean promptly returned the plans to us. I would certainly not hesitate to call Sean again to bid on a project.

Quality all the way, I recommend them highly. The other "A" reviews swayed me to hire American Deck and Patio and I was not disappointed. Andy Lombardo immediately responded to my inquiry, came to my home, discussed my options, made excellent suggestions and wrote up an estimate and diagram of the work on the spot. His recommendations were invaluable and made the project come together beautifully. Andy and his crew are very professional and the work done was high quality - it looks fabulous. I get lots of compliments. My friends look at it and say "Wow, who did this?" So thank you Angie for your List. And thanks to Andy and his crew - you did a terrific job!
Description of Work: Removed existing fence. pavers and steel steps and replaced them with a beautiful white vinyl fence and gate, brick patio in herringbone pattern and a 4'x8' landing with steps. Extremely professional!! Unfortunately we had a bad experience with the first contractor who built our deck, but had a FANTASTIC experience with American Deck and Patio. We would definitely recommend them!!!
Description of Work: We were looking to convert our existing 12 x 18 TREX deck into a screened-in porch and to move the location of the deck stairs. Andy Lombardo promptly scheduled a meeting to see the deck and provide an estimate. He listened to what we were looking for, made suggestions, and provided an estimate/preliminary drawing that evening! He was also considerate of our concerns with losing our view by recommending a different type of screening material that looks almost invisible. Although a bit more expensive, we are so happy we went with the upgraded screens! Andy took care of getting the required permits and kept us informed on the building progress. Joe McDonald, the Senior Field Project Manager, answered all our questions, addressed concerns and was extremely helpful! He ensured the worksite was cleaned up every evening and the material was secured before Hurricane Sandy. Both Andy and Joe quickly responded to our calls/emails.

Without question a Best Value choice. And we did the research and had the estimates from others to prove it. Sales and design/planning, no hard sell very relaxed and a pleasure to work with, provide CAD drawings and handle permits. Our carpentry crew was great. On site foreman for entire job. Excellent attention to detail, good communication. Stone crew was skilled and had a great eye for fitting irregular stones. Also an on site foreman for job. In general unless you have an architect always best if you have a solid vision for what you want in terms of design and materials during the up front planning. They were then really helpful at providing design and material options that still met the vision within our budget. Oh, it's easy for contractors and customers to not consider drainage as part of design. Absolutely must. For example in urban neighborhoods - like ours - think about how water drains around your house AND from neighbors into your own. It's an issue we faced after project was over and got some serious rain storms. Had to address with some landscaping reforms. Finally in general try to time a job for the off peak months. American did a real good job of sequencing their jobs but no matter who you chose there will be the overlapping of starting and finishing jobs during peak months. Just roll with it.
Description of Work: Porch features 17x14 screen porch, Ipe hardwood tongue in groove floor, cedar wrapped posts, composite slate roof tile, lighting and electrical. Patio features about 500 sq ft irregular PA flagstone in stone dust, curved pattern.

After no proposal/quote came in the promised time frame, I called and emailed Andy over the next two months asking for the proposal/quote. Each time, Andy said he had been too busy to finish the proposal/quote but that I would get it in the next couple of days. The last contact with Andy was on August 20, 2012 wherein Andy once again said he had been too busy/needed roofing info to finish the Proposal but, now, he had all the information he needed to finish the quote and we would get it soon. Never heard from Andy again. In sum, AD and Andy are unresponsive and unprofessional. Find someone else.
Description of Work: In early June 2012, I contacted American Deck (AD) to set-up an appointment to conduct a site visit and scope the repair for our porch that was damaged in a storm. Andy Lombardo from AD came out to conducte a site visit on June 19, 2012 and promised a proposal/quote in about two weeks.

We did contact this customer regarding our oversight. Yes, his file was misplaced and not addressed. We wish these things did not occur but sometimes a file falls 'into the weeds'. Andy contacted the customer and apologized for our oversight. We ultimately did send out the proposal as the customer is now looking at next spring for the work to occur. He accepted our apologies and hopefully we will be able to add him to our Project Calendar for this upcoming spring...and we hope he will then look to amend his rating on our company. We strive to extend quality and prompt service to all of our customers and those that are considering American Deck and Patio. We don't always succeed but we work diligently at providing honest, prompt, and professional service at all times. We value their input on our services and we are always appreciative of those who read the postings of our customers and choose to contact us for consideration. Sean Conway, Owner.

Andy Lombardo came up with an lovely design for the pergola we wanted to add to our deck. His guys took down two existing awnings and replaced and repainted the siding. The workmen cleaned up after themselves and were always very pleasant. The new pergola was built on a very tight deadline and met the deadline with a day to spare. The design and the quality of the workmanship are beautiful. We have received many compliments on it. The only part of the experience that was less than perfect was that it was initially a bit difficult to get to hold of someone and schedule the estimate. The deadline wouldn't have been quite so tight had my first calls been returned promptly. I persisted because of the excellent reviews, and I'm glad I did; I would definitely use the company again.
Description of Work: Added a cumaru wood pergola to an existing 15' by 16' deck.
Andy Lombardo from American Deck and Patio came to give us an estimate. He really listened to our ideas and what we wanted, and designed a great multi-tiered deck/patio combo on the spot that really impressed us. He also suggested a stone veneer for our patio walls to replace the old siding we had there. We had other estimates, but the designs were not as appealing as the one Andy provided. American Deck certainly wasn't the cheapest option, but we knew they had a solid reputation and many good reviews on this site. The project started on-schedule. They had to demolish the old deck, add pavers stone for our patio, and construct the deck to the specifications of the hot tub design. They even had to redo a part of it so that an inspector could check the depth of the buried electrical conduit. Everyone at American Deck was very professional and courteous. They showed up on time each day, seemed to work all day long, and cleaned up every day before they left. Joe, the project manager was very pleasant, and always kept us up-to-date as the project progressed. We only had one issue ? the electrician we thought we hired backed out, and we were in a bind. Andy was able to help us secure another electrician ? who worked out great. (Note: American Deck does not do electrical work). Overall, we were very pleased with their process and end product. Everything looks great - from the stone walls to the re-done screened-in porch to the stone patio to the beautiful deck with hot-tub. It all complements each other as well. We'd recommend American Deck and Patio to any of our friends and family who are considering deck work.
Description of Work: We wanted to redo our backyard patio - to make it more inviting space as well as add a hot tub there. We had an existing old deck that really needed to go, and a screened-in porch that was badly in need of a face-lift.

At the end of the day, I would have been very comfortable contracting with Sean as he was very knowledgeable and responsive and the references he provided all had great things to say about Sean and his crew. I even went to visit a few projects and was impressed at what I saw. If I have another project in the future, I would certainly consider using Sean and would not hesitate to recommend his company.
Description of Work: Our project is an elevated screened porch (16x12) and flagstone patio (500 sq. feet) with seating walls. We did not end up contracting with Sean at American Deck. However, I just wanted to put a review up for Sean as he was nothing but professional and our decision not to use him was a difficult one. Unfortunately for him, it came down between his company, American Deck, and another design build contractor. The other contractor's proposal was just slightly better on a couple of key issues, so we choose them. Although, we requested proposals from 6 contractors all together, so I can say with confidence that Sean was better than most.

The project started on schedule and was completed within the estimated timeframe in spite of several weather delays. The project manager, Andy Lombard, and the American Deck crew were top notch. All permitting was taken care of efficiently and the work crew was friendly, experienced and proficient. The only real down side was related to an electrical subcontractor who didn?t seem to have any regard for scheduling. On two separate incidents I had arranged to go in late or stay off work in order to provide access for the electrician only to have him not show ? very infuriating at the time ? but the electrical work was completed professionally and all is well. As in any project, there were a few punch-list items that needed to be addressed toward the end of the project. All issues were quickly and satisfactorily rectified. When I asked about the finishing on one of the stair treads, they even added extra trim and bull-nose framing around the edge of the entire deck? at no additional cost. Andy was very responsive to all requests for information and status; although, I would have liked a bit of a more proactive approach, but that?s more me than him. The end result is well crafted and has brought us a great deal of pleasure over the summer while entertaining guests; sitting, eating and drinking, without concern for rain or bugs. I wouldn?t hesitate to recommend American Deck to anyone looking for a quality product installed by a professional crew.
Description of Work: American Deck installed a 20x20 screened-in, composite deck with a gable roof for us last spring. This replaced our original 12x18 open deck. New footings were provided for the additional area, and existing footings were beefed up to provide support for the new roof. Electrical convenience outlets and wiring for new lights and a fan were added. The original deck was completely removed and disposed of.

Overall a very positive experience. Andy and his crew were a joy to work with. Every concern and idea was addressed quickly. We are very pleased with how the deck came out. The workmanship is great and it looks fabulous! My only negative is that it took longer than anticipated. This was partly due to the delay from the custom railing folks who needed 2 weeks after the deck was complete to finish manufacturing and painting the railing. I would recommend American Deck to anyone.
Description of Work: My wife and I worked with Andy Lombardo to design a replacement deck for our backyard. We wanted to significantly expand the deck with curved decking, railing and LED lighting. Andy was great to work with, extremely patient and very responsive to our ideas. He drew up detailed plans for our review and worked through tweaking some details. He worked with the county to obtain the needed permits and had the inspector come at the correct times to keep the work moving. His crew demolished and hauled away the old deck. He worked with seperate vendors to bend the Fiburon boards and manufacture custom curved railings. He recommened and we agreed to using different color Fiburon boards to accent the edges. The work crew was very professional and responsive. When rotten fascia board around our sliding door was discovered under the siding, the crew quickly removed and replaced. We also had Dry Snap installed under the deck so the area under the deck stays clean and dry. Light sensative LED lights are mounted into the railing posts pointed downward. Because of the size of the deck, reverse herringbone patterns are seperated by an accent board.

As the walkway began to take shape, one of the workmen suggested we add to it to connect it with our porch door. By then we could see how much difference the curved path made to the appearance of our backyard. So we discussed a change with Sean and revised the plan. Workers arrived promptly, and were consistently a pleasure to work with; they were diligent, careful, and clearly took pride in delivering an end result that would be beautiful and sturdy and durable. We were impressed by the care taken in doing a job that has some very dusty aspects. Pavers must be shaped by saw, and sawing = DUST. Before beginning dusty work, we were reminded to close the windows of our back porch - which opens onto the backyard. I understood it would be dusty, but did not imagine the true meaning of dusty until that part of the work began. I am still grateful for the cleaning work I didn't have to do on my porch. In addition, shed surfaces were protected, and plants covered. It was a hot summer - but everyone worked steadily, and manners and voices were cheerful. Sean checked progress frequently. As the final wood strips were placed on the pergola, we were disappointed at the appearance. There was too much space between them. We called Sean and he agreed. Additional strips were added without additional charge. Now the work is done. The idea of adding pathway from porch door to the rest of the path was inspired! It gives meaningful shape to our whole back yard. It connects what needs to be connected, and sets off the open space - for my croquet court, or badminton court - with room for further development of plants adding color, texture, and design. Wisdom is gained by experience reflected upon - someone once said. On our patio or in our porch - we have just the places for reflection. And our grandchildren have wonderful places to play. We We look forward to calling on Sean at American Deck and Patio next year - to help us improve the appearance of the entrance area of our little house. Integrity, straight talk, high standard for quality of work, good design - we know where we can find it.
Description of Work: We needed a path from our carport, past one shed, ending at a ramp leading into another shed. There is space between the sheds that encourages summer breezes - we thought it would be a great spot for a small patio covered by a pergola to shade chairs and a table and or a couple of hammocks. We interviewed 3 contractors from Angie's list and selected American Deck and Patio's bid because our interview with Sean Conway was excellent. First, of course, Sean presented his credentials, licenses, and insurance coverage. Then, he LISTENED. After hearing our ideas, he placed small flags to show how a walkway could be very functional and attractive. He also explained what kinds of materials would be needed, and why they were best suited to our particular spot of land and our needs. He talked about the time required to do the job, explaining each step required for an enduring end result. When it came to our part in choosing materials, Sean explained the pros and cons of each and left us with catalogues and information to study before making our final choice. He included discussion as to durability and maintenance required by different materials. We are an older couple, and needed to consider those issues carefully. Within a day or two he presented us with a blueprint including all our wishes. We loved his pergola design - not just a square or rectangle to fit the space, but shaped with angles to fit the sheds. After receiving our choices as to materials Sean presented us a bid that was within our budget. Work began in mid-September and finished at the end of the month. it included removal of sod, laying underpinnings for walkway and patio, laying of stones in a pattern that looks random, yet well balanced, placing edging, refining the edges, constructing the arbor over the patio, and painting the arbor. While the men worked through some of our hottest days, a few days of rain, and an addition to our original plan did interfere with the time schedule a bit.

Everything went well, and they did a good job. My only comment is to ensure that you get the appropriate permits before starting the work.

One of the guys who worked here, he did whatever he said all the time. He was always there. He always called when he said he would call. When he says he is going to show up, he shows up.
Description of Work: American Deck & Patio installed a 60-foot deck. They have been working for me for past couple of years.

It took 3 phone calls just to get Sean (the owner) to come out to discuss what I wanted. I should have known at that time that they were too busy for me.Sean arrived at 8:00 am as scheduled, Then proceeded to accept multiple phone calls and to make several others, while he was meeting with me. Should'v known ........Said he would work up plans and be in touch with me . Should'v known .......6 weeks later, hasn't called ... No surprise, really.Wouldn't do business with them even if they did call.

Response from American Deck & Patio
I did meet with Member. And she is correct that she called numerous times. My salesman/designer was not following up on the leads we were forwarding him (He no longer represents my company as he was let go). I then contacted the Member personally to apologize for my company's lack of service. I am uncertain if she accepted my apology or not. I did go out to meet with her as I felt obligated to do so. I chose not to pursue doing business with Mrs. Beman.

Work on the project starts next week. i will have to provide an update once it is completed.
Description of Work: The work is in process for a deck/waterfall. Kirk Montague is an excellent owner and customer service "provider". Do not hesitate to give him a call...you will not be sorry!!
We talked to four or five contractors before hiring American Deck & Co. We had a rough sketch and vision for the backyard, and were hoping for a $10k budget. It turned out that $10k wasn't feasible for this scale of project, but some contractors were quoting us figures of $20k or even $30k while suggesting work and materials that were really out of proportion to our neighborhood. I worked with both Sean Conway and John Poole at American Deck, and they were very helpful and flexible in terms of shaping the project and budget to fit as close as possible to what we were hoping for. First, John suggested both a low concrete seating wall at the edge of the patio, and a frame-and-lattice structure to wall in the the area under the stairs and porch--we hadn't thought of either option at first, but we're very glad to have them now, since they really improve the usable space for company and for tool storage, respectively. Second, our neighbors wanted to build a small section of fence in their backyard that would match ours--this would have been too small a job for any contractor to take on independently, but American Deck built it for them while they were out working on our job. Third, our initial ideas for the backyard included replacing the concrete driveway with pavers, and building a gate behind the driveway so the yard would be fully fenced, but John explained that by leaving the driveway alone, the cost for the project would come down substantially, making it easier to upgrade the other parts of the project. Similarly, John had pointed out that building a synthetic sleeper deck over our existing concrete deck, rather than demolishing the old one, would be both cheaper and stronger, and invisible except from underneath.During the construction process, the crew was punctual and professional, and Sean and John checked in repeatedly to make sure things were going smoothly. Overall, we're very satisfied with the quality, both structurally and aesthetically. The railing and fencing is solid, the surface and color on the deck and pavers is holding up well, and the work comes with a five year warranty. The backyard looks a whole lot better overall than it did before, and we spend a lot more time out back now. We would definitely hire American Deck & Patio again.
Description of Work: This was a backyard remodel for a rowhouse in DC--a long, narrow space that we wanted to make more livable and usable. American Deck & Patio replaced our chainlink fences with wood (boxed, not pickets) including two gates; built a sleeper deck, railing, and stairs (composites & reinforced vinyl); and replaced concrete with a patio of pavers and a low seating wall.
