Roger arrived with his crew on time on the agreed date, and spent some time orienting the two other painters with the work at hand. Each had his own set of tasks and they went straight to work. Roger did the cutting in at the ceiling and I was very impressed with the straight line and neatness of the edges which I perceive to be difficult to do since they are curved. The two other painters each had their own tasks; one repaired the wall mentioned previously while the other painted stairwell. At the end of the day everything was cleaned up and stacked neatly in the room, tarps were stowed, and we agreed on a start time for the next day. Roger had been ailing through the day, and truly did not look well when he left. It was no surprise the next morning that when the other two painters arrived and Roger was not with them. They said that he was ill. They went to work and the day proceeded much like the day before. When they left, all was cleaned up and they said they would complete the job the next day which was a Friday. Friday arrived and so did the two painters; Roger was still ill. One painted the hallway and the other completed the remainder of the great room. It was clear that they were focused on their plans for Friday afternoon/evening, and the concept of neatness flew out the door and speed took its place. About 3PM they indicated they were done and were cleaned up. I checked out a few places and found a lot of paint dripped and splattered especially on the woodwork so I asked them to clean it up. They did and when I checked it was half done, so I asked again, this time they were visibly annoyed. As I pointed out the places where the paint was they would wipe it off, but it was clear their only interest was to get out of there, and their efforts were not accomplishing the task Finally I said go, have a nice weekend. After they left I spent hours cleaning the floor and woodwork. The next morning Roger arrived to pick up his check. I complained about the mess, but by that time I'd cleaned most of the worst places. Another issue I had was that I could see brush lines around places where they cut in the paint, e.g., around light switches. The area under the breakfast bar was particularly bad. Roger said that was because of the color I chose; that green color is particularly bad and called it boxing. I sure wish he d mentioned that before he started. He suggested that he cover that area with polyurethane, and one of the other painters came the next week to do that. It looked terrible so he repainted the area with the regular paint. I sill have paint splattered around the floor and woodwork. Of course now it s harder to remove. The boxed areas still look bad, and areas where they spackled show through and we have to redo the work. This was the very first time I ever paid someone to paint and I am so very disappointed in the outcome. I expected a beautifully painted room done in a workman-like manner.
Description of Work: My great room and hallway were painted. The great room is two stories high with several oddly shaped wall-ceiling connections. The edges of the walls are rounded not the usual 90 degree edges. The woodwork is stained wood and is rather wide and is a focus of this Craftsman style room. The color I chose was Gum Leaf. Roger arrived promptly to give us an estimate. His was the third estimate and the most expensive. He sent an email a few days later with the estimate and followed up with a phone call to ensure we got it. He came highly recommended, and appeared very professional. We were impressed with his plan which included fixing some irregularities in a wall which he said would be more pronounced with the color I chose. We agreed on the start date; he said it would take about 2.5 days to do the work.
