We recently renovated a garage apartment and with cold weather coming were concerned about how the existing gas furnace would perform. I took advantage of the Angie's List coupon offer for a $69 cleaning and called Sila. They were able to come out the same day and Joey arrived within the 3-hour window. He was prompt, courteous and professional, even putting on booties before going into the apartment. He performed the maintenance checklist - and even lit the pilot, and reassured me that the furnace was now in good working order. I was impressed with the level of service and thought I got a good deal.

I never heard back from Niel or the company, Sila Heating & Air Conditoning. I never received a proposal. Update: March 2013 I received a call from them and they very apologetically admitted that my file was mishandled. In the meantime they did come out to look at our house as well as come up with an estimate in a timely manner. I did appreciate their apology, concerns as well as having a member of the management team join the sales representative in looking over the house and coming up with an esitmate. They did not pressure us into anything and left the lines of communications open. Again, I really appreciate when there is this kind of follow up.
Description of Work: After reading the good reviews on Sila Heating & Air conditioning here on Angie's List, we decided to have an estimate done for a Mitsubishi Mr. Slim cooling/heat pump system. On 9-6-2012 we had an appointment to meet with a Sila representative . Niel the representative was punctual and very friendly, however the first thing he wanted to ask me about were questions focusing on what it would take for us to pick Sila as the company to do the installation rather than discussing the unit itself and the installation process. I told him that I needed a proposal before making any decision. He kept pushing whether price was a main factor, a huge factor the only factor in making a decision. I told him that I also use my gut sense as well as observe in how a contractor/salesman presents themselves during the first meeting. During the meeting I got the sense that he wasn't quite confident in his knowledge about the system. He did measure the windows, looked in our attic, our electrical box, but didn't really measure the rooms or the hight of the ceilings. I asked him a few questions regarding the second floor-it's a bit tricky, and he said that he would get back to me on that. When he left he said that he would send me an estimate by the beginning of the following week. A few hours later he sent me an email with a list of names and phone numbers dating back from 2008. "The combination of this list and our Angie’s List A Rating should help to display of the value that we bring to our customers. As soon as you feel confident that you are ready to make a decision (either way) about the air conditioning, please let me know and I can send you your proposal." I asked him about 2012 references and told him that I needed a proposal before making any decisions and that I hoped to hear from him soon.

Response from Sila Heating, Cooling and Plumbing
I want to apologize for any miscommunication and inconvenience that this appointment may have caused. As a project manager, I make every effort to be a clear communicator and discuss all options with my clients. My customers and I typically move forward with an installation once both parties agree on the goals of the project as well as the level of investment. The homeowner had already done some research on the product and mentioned that she would like a small unit to be placed in the hallway. I explained how a small unit in the hallway would not condition the adjacent 2nd floor bedrooms very well (particularly when doors are closed) and that it would be much more comfortable to provide direct cooling to the bedrooms. We discussed the options and after leaving the appointment, it was not clear in my mind that the homeowner was ready to move forward with one of the options discussed. I apologize again for any miscommunication that may have arisen from this appointment and would love an opportunity to revisit these solutions with the homeowner in the future.

Our air conditioner stopped blowing cold air right after the huge storm in the DC area in late June. I checked Angie?s List, and most reviews for Sila were positive. When I called Sila, they were able to send a technician that same day, which seemed encouraging. After checking the fuse box and replacing some fuses next to the AC unit, the technician surmised that the compressor was broken and needed to be replaced, which would be ?very expensive,? as much as several thousands of dollars. I?m not sure how he figured out that the compressor was the issue, since he wasn?t looking at it at the time he made this assessment. He charged me about $100 for the visit and the two fuses he replaced, and told me I?d be receiving a call that day from Sila regarding the estimate for replacing the compressor and labor costs. Okay, so we mentally prepared for this ?expensive? estimate that I was to receive via phone from Sila. I did not hear from them that day, nor the next day. It seemed strange that they would not be calling me ASAP if they stood to make so much money from me. I ended up having to call them to ask for my estimate. I was promised a call back shortly with an estimate and never heard from them again. We ended up calling another HVAC company that was recommended by a neighbor. After taking a look at the unit, these guys determined that the compressor was just fine, and that some wires needed to be replaced, and the coils needed to be cleaned. Total charge: $320! Big difference from thinking we needed the compressor replaced at the tune of several thousands of dollars. The AC works fine now. So, I?m guessing Sila didn?t want our business, even though we were ready to believe that we needed this very expensive work done, not to mention desperate since the temperature was averaging 100 degrees each day. I guess our guardian angels were looking out for us. UPDATE: I was contacted by a Sila representative who apologized for this experience and promised me a refund. Much appreciated, thank you.
Description of Work: Technician checked the fuse box in my home. He did not see anything wrong, so he checked the fuse box next tot he AC unit. He found that these fuses were not working and replaced them. After putting the cover back on the system and turning it on, he said the compressor was not working.

We would like to offer our sincerest apologies. As we grow and serve more customers, we must hire new personnel with the expectation that they will meet the high level of service we are known for. Unfortunately, we got it wrong with this particular technician and he is no longer with Sila. We are glad we were able to reach out to you personally and we apologize again for your inconvenience.

Overall, everything went well. I would recommend this group to others. Hopefully I won't have to replace my new HVAC furnace/AC ever again! My family is very happy as we now have AC that is comfortable, adjustable, and dependable. We look forward to nice heat in the winter, too! Thanks SILA!
Description of Work: I searched Angie's List for a reputable HVAC provider for a new furnace/AC and found SILA. The representative was highly professional and explained the job and its facets. The estimate I received was right in the ballpark of what I expected. Since I've not ever replaced a system of this nature before, I did my homework, and it matched up 100% with what I was told by SILA. The workers arrived, performed the job, and completed within the time frame anticipated. The representative also came to site that day to check in on the progress, a touch of professionalism I appreciated and didn't expect.

Everyone was great; the crew was extremely polite and professional. The system is works like a dream and the units in the ceiling are very discrete. Unfortunately my house doesn't have enough closets to route the air from the main level to the above ground basement so one of the ducts had to be routed through the corner of a room. The guys were upfront and told me the challenges before I signed the contract so I knew there was no other option than for them to put the ducts in a corner and for us to soffit the area. They also did their own electrical work which assured that there were not additional electrical expenses needed to get the unit running. Highly recommend.

Our experience with Sila was truly great from the start of the quote process with John to actual installation and use of the system. The installation crew worked extremely hard, communicated with us any changes, and knew exactly what they were doing. We had a bad experience with a contractor in the fall so we were really weary about having more work done to the house, but Sila made it as smooth as possible. The crew even asked to stay late a few nights and work on a Saturday since they had started the project later than scheduled and wanted to stick to the original deadline of completion within one week. I have never seen such hard workers and they tried their best not to disrupt our daily routines and cleaned up every night. i highly recommend Sila and the only reason I gave them a "B" on punctuality is because they had called to re-schedule the start date twice. This was due to a cancellation of a job so they moved us up and then that individual came back so they had to push us back again so we understood. Plus their original quote said the earliest installment was mid to late May, which the job started after Memorial Day and was done the first week of June, so they stayed true to their word.
Description of Work: We received four quotes from providers I found on Angie's List and Sila was comparable with all others, but provided a few upgrades the others did not so we went with them. Our 1800s rowhouse in DC had no duct work and we did not want to live through a construction nightmare installing traditional a/c ducts so we went with a high velocity a/c system. Sila provided us a quote, had their installer come out to look at the house to walk us through where the ducts would run and location of vents, and then they installed the ducts and a/c system. There were a few trial and error vents that had to be patched up, which Sila fully prepared us for the possibility and we expected with the age and construction of our house, but these won't be noticeable once we paint. Sila took care of everything from start to finish and even worked with the crane company to determine if we'd need to use a crane to put the system on the roof. Also, Sila is VERY knowledgable on high velocity systems, which provided us extra comfort since we weren't as familiar with them.

Overall, my experience with this company was excellent! Their service technician, Mike was extremely knowlegeble and professional. He showed up on time and went above and beyond our expectations. He correctly diagnosed the problem with our unit and effeciently made the repairs. It was extremely hot on the day that he arrived, but he worked inside (a very hot house) and outside without a complaint or slowing down. Before I knew it, he had our air up & running. He found an electrical problem with the unit that was a far less costly repair than other companies had qouted us. Before he left, Mike was kind enough to give us tips and reccomendations and even showed our teen son where and how to install the filters on our units! I'll be using their service exclusively going forward. I'm a new member of Angie's List and so very glad I joined!!

Really an ideal experience. I got them on the phone on the first call and set up an appointment within minutes. Turned out that they later had a scheduling problem for the time I'd picked, but they let me know with plenty of advance notice, so picking a new date wasn't a problem. On the service date, the technician was on time and extremely nice -- he checked out the A/C system in my cramped, superheated attic and on my roof quickly, diligently, and without a word of complaint. With an Angie's List coupon, I paid $89, which felt like a steal. As I told the technician, I fully intend to call them in the fall to check my heating system.

Mike was excellent, and saved the day so that we could hold the graduation party we had planned for the afternoon, on a very warm day! The experience from the dispatcher to the repair person was excellent. Mike's attention to detail was outstanding. He made suggestions for future service, which we plan on doing.
Description of Work: Mike arrived within a half hour after our call. He was prompt and efficient from the get-go. He was very thorough, and explained everything he saw, and suggested the necessary work to be done. The AC system was putting out warm air, and there was ice on the condenser coils. After defrosting, he was able to add (a significant amount of) freon, thereby getting the system back in running order.

Overall, the service was excellent.
Description of Work: I asked Sila to come out to investigate a suspected problem with my AC. It had been making a humming noise and would stop cooling before reaching the temp set on the thermostat. It started acting right before they came, but I wanted them to inspect it anyway. Every aspect of the process went much better than I would ever expect in the DC area, where service people are usually quite surly. When I called to schedule an appointment, the scheduler was polite, professional, and efficient. The technician that came out was also polite, professional, and friendly. He put on shoe covers before coming in the house. He checked the thermostat, went into the attic to look at the unit there, and also went on the roof to look at the compressor. Everything checked out ok. I also liked that he checked the freon by checking the incoming and outgoing temp of the attic unit instead of disconnecting the freon line on the compression and checking it from there, which keeps freon loss at zero. He put in a new filter, gave some advice about the best style of filter to use, and cleaned the filter cover. I also asked him questions about cooling and heating a couple of added rooms that currently have no heat or cooling. He answered my questions and also put me in touch with someone from Sila that could give me an estimate. I also got to use a $30 coupon for Angie's List customers. I was "over the top" happy with the service, and would call Sila again, and recommend them to others. Other service companies should study their customer service philosophy.

I live in a house that was built in 1888 and I never had air conditioning at all, so I decided that I really needed to have it done. I got lots of bids, and they didn't come in as the cheapest, but they were amazing. They came in and put the air conditioning unit in the attic and they had to put in a lot of duct work since I had nothing. They did an amazing job. They cleaned up after themselves and you couldn't even tell that they had been in there. There was no dust and no powder from the plaster. There was nothing, and it works beautifully. I would strongly recommend them. They are just also great people; very conscientious, very hard-working and pleasant to be around. It was a great group. They were very thorough and the duct work is great.

I asked Sila to inspect my furnace to determine if I needed a replacement. After 60 minutes or so, the technician had identified the problem and fixed it. I told him I was relieved to find out that I did not need a costly replacement. He said that he did not think it would be right to try to sell me a whole new system when I didn't need one. I really appreciated that the company had the integrity to not push more product than I needed and would obviously support their staff to do the right thing instead of the most lucrative thing. A great experience, very professional. I was completely satisfied.

I was very impressed with the work performed by Sila A/C. The excellent started with the initial visit from the estimator, Neil Huber. He did a thorough check of the exisiting system, took measurements and explained the work that was needed. A few days later, he came back with an estimate and my options. He outlined several options for me and let me make the decision of what I wanted; no pressure. A few days later, the crew came to do the installation. I was extremely impressed with them. They showed up right on time and got to work immediately. I was a little nervous about the amount of work that would be required and the difficulty in removing the old unit, but my fears were quickly assuaged. The crew took care of everything and did so perfectly. The team was trustworthy, clean and very polite. The work took a little longer than expected, but they let me know when they would be through. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the work and service provided by Sila. I would would not hesitate to recommend them to others. After having, an outdated, problematic system for a few years, I am now looking forward to a worry free and cool summer. Thanks, Sila!

We got a lot of estimates and Sila was close to being the best - but we really went with them because of their great review track record on Angie's List. The guys that came to do the estimate did measurements, showed us pictures of what the completed vents and ducts would look like, and seemed very knowledgeable. I thought that they pushed the sale a bit too hard - we didn't need to be sold that hard - but they clearly knew their stuff. They came on time to do the installation, they installed the vents exactly where we discussed, and they completed the work in the time they predicted (and cleaned up after themselves).

John and his colleagues came to the house to discuss their proposed system and identify locations for the vents to be placed. They took as much time as we needed to answer our questions. We were given a list of people who had similar systems installed. We visited one woman in our neighborhood so we could see what the tubing looked like and we spoke on the phone with someone else who had used the system for a long time. All the reports were very good so we contracted with Sila for our job. The team that came to install our system worked very hard and did an excellent job. They were considerate, professional and cleaned up after themselves. We highly recommend using Sila! UPDATE: Sila staff are truly dedicated, kind and amazing! John took our after-hours calls and got help to us immediately each time we were in need. At first the technician went up to the attic and quickly drained the pan and air conditioning system started to work again. But when the problem began to happen every few days, they worked long and hard in our blazing hot attic to figure out the long-term solution. I believe they found a defective part to replace that was still under warranty. We are deeply grateful to John and his team for taking such good care of us!
Description of Work: Central air conditioning was installed. They used flexible tubing instead of traditional duct work which is a better approach for an older home. UPDATE: Summer 2012, our new central air conditioner shut down several times on the hottest days of the year. There was a problem with the drain pan, so when water filled it, a safety switch would shut off the system so that water would not flood our attic. They worked hard to find the long-term fix which was the replacement of a defective part.

Sila did a great job. Because our house has an odd layout that made installation difficult, it took them 5 days to install. The lead workman informed us where all the vents and ducts would go before he installed them and kept us apprised of changes/issues. There was also one project manager who came to our house every day to check on the progress and deal with any questions or concerns we had. The workmen were very diligent and were good at communicating what they were doing. They cleaned up very well after themselves and vacumned up all the drywall/plaster dust. When they had to run ducts through closets, they trimmed the shelves around the ducts so they were still useable. UPDATE: While the installation went fairly smoothly, we had numerous problems with the unit afterwards. First, the unit kept going dead whenever we left for a few days on vacation. Second, the installers didn't put enough outlets into certain rooms. Third, the heat pump unit wouldn't shut off. I don't know enough to say whether it was their fault, but I've had a high velocity unit in other residences before without any issues. Three times Sila came out and fixed it. They were very nice about it and came out promptly each time.
Description of Work: Sila installed a high velocity air conditioner in our 1920's bungalow. Previous owners had just used window units, so Sila had to run all new ducts and design the system from scratch.
