Bottom Line: Do not hire Mr. Gomez to do a Paver Patio. His team may be good at other things, but they simply don't know what they are doing with a sand and gravel patio. (This was an evaluation of several patio and water proofing professionals. See below.) Update: We had our patio mostly complete in June 2013, but it took several more months to finally complete the project. In September, I noticed that the water was not draining well on the patio --- it was pooling in some places (See my original review). I contacted Mr. Gomez and he said he would come out to look at it and he never did. Then the winter came and it wasn't as much of an issue. When the spring hit, we realized we had a big problem. We had water streaming toward our house. On a few occasions it was so bad, we had a little water in our basement. We got outside with a level and saw that in many places the patio was sloped towards the house. Mr. Gomez came out and told my father (who was here) that it was due to 1) Our gutter and 2) our window well. We had a gutter that leaked in a few places, but some of the places that sloped toward the house were nowhere near this gutter. Mr. Gomez saw evidence of water infiltration in the unfinished portion of our basement and cited that as a cause. The peeling paint and damaged cinder block had been there when we moved in due to improper grading on our 60 year old property and was something we addressed as soon as we moved in. We had not had ANY water in the basement until this spring. Mr. Gomez also stated that another the cause of the problem was the fact that we had chosen a gravel and sand base for our patio. Mr. Gomez had discouraged me from using sand and gravel and wanted to do concrete base. I had read the pros and cons and thought the gravel and sand was better. I thought he was trying to upsell me to a concrete base. If I had gone back in time I would have walked away at that point. Mr. Gomez told us on May 9th to have some patience with him because he was very busy, but he would come back and reset half of the patio, even though it was not their fault --- they had done a very good job, he assured me. We waited and waited. he did not seem in a rush to get here even though we told him about how bad the situation was and that we were under a 1 year warranty. We were out in the middle of the night (2 AM) sweeping water off our patio, but we waited. (You would think he could put off some current customers to help a customer who had paid him $15,000.) We told Mr. Gomez, we wanted to get in writing what he planned to do to fix it and that he wouldn't charge us. We felt this was good practice and didn't want to wind up getting charged for something "unforseen." He refused to put it in writing. He told us not to try to intimidate him or he would walk away and do nothing for us. He promised me he was a good guy and that he would come soon. Each week, he told me he would come the following week or two. Fed up, I told him Monday, June 9th was our last day. If he wasn't here, we were done and we would submit our final review. On Friday, June 6th, he said, we would see him on Monday, the 9th. At noon on Monday, I sent an email asking when I could expect him. He replied that he would have a team on Tuesday at 8 AM. I told him sorry, we had given him a deadline and we were done. On Tuesday morning, his two man team showed up (but not him.) We sent them away. Mr. Gomez called several times and sent several emails while his team sat out front of our house for 20 minutes. Finally, I went out to talk to the team. At this point, I really felt like I couldn't trust Mr. Gomez to be reliable. I was afraid if he started the work, I could be in for several more weeks of waiting for his team to come every day and finish. But, since they were here, I thought maybe I should let them work. So, I said to his team leader, "How long do you think this will take?" And he came back at me with, "I don't know. What is it that you want us to do? You know the reason you have water in your basement is because you have a sand and gravel patio. You should have gotten a concrete base." At that point, I said, "Forget it. We're done." The next day,we had a landscaping company come and look at the patio. He explained what had most probably happened. He explained that interlocking pavers were meant to be laid in sand and gravel. He told us about the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (www.icpi.org) and their standard guidelines and how these guidelines had not been followed by our contactor. GO Contractors had laid the pavers in concrete around the edges of the patio. This did not allow that patio to properly expand, so it buckled up in the middle at freezing and expanding and unexpanding occurred. He thought it was possible that the ground was not dug down far enough to account for the frost line, which would have affected drainage. He explained that we were going to need to replace the entire patio at the tune of $4000 -$6000 depending on how much gravel was laid underneath. We're crossing our fingers that GO Contractors did the patio to a suitable depth. This was not the only company to have a poor evaluation of the patio and some had no financial incentive to give us a poor opinion. We had our waterproofer (who does not do patios) here to put in a sump pump and he evaluated the patio. He said a gravel and sand patio, if done properly, should not have caused us these problems. Another friend, who lays tile professionally told us that he had noticed when the patio was first laid that it was not sloped properly, but was afraid to tell us. Another landscaper who was here to cut trees, was concerned about the lack of edging. Original Review: The GO Contractors did a lot of work. We got to know their team very well because they were here for 5 weeks. Some of this was due to weather conditions, but while the work got off very quickly, it did slow down at the end. The sidewalk was done almost immediately and looks great. The patio took a bit longer. We are mostly happy with the patio. We are concerned a little bit that it might not be draining properly in one spot, but the owner has said he is going to come out and look at it. If I had done this again, I would not have purchased the "Big Deal" to save money. Unfortunately, it made me locked into one contractor for the job and made it more difficult to negotiate the price. I assumed that the provider gets the money we paid for the "Big Deal," but I have learned from another provider that Angie's List actually gets a substantial portion of the "Deal." This, I have realized, means that the providers aren't always very positive coming in to do a job as a part of the "Big Deal" because they are losing money. So, long story short, I would use GO Contractors again, but I won't do a "Big Deal" again.
Description of Work: The provider installed a very long concrete sidewalk and a 600 square foot brick patio. They also built stairs going into the new door we had put in.

There is not much to tell here. He never followed up and I still need the work done and am out the price I paid for the Big Deal. It has made me less likely to use the Big Deal again in the future since I really got burned on this one.
Description of Work: He did not provide a service. I called to make an appointment and he did not return my call for over 1 week, past the expiration date of my big deal. He said he would honor the big deal since he was on vacation. He came to look at the work to be done, but never followed up to schedule the actual work.

I had a few other estimates along with G.O. Contractors. When he came out, he measured much more than other providers I had out. He was going to charge an additional $2000 on top of what was on the deal. I told him that it was much more expensive than other estimates. When I told him about the other providers, we agreed upon $799 additional and shook hands on this price. Before he came out, I received another email and it stated that he was going to have to charge over $1000. He never provided blueprints either to show to the home owner association. When I asked him about pulling permits, he also said that he was not going to get a permit because the price was too low and if I wanted the permit I would have to get it myself. I have decided to go another direction and asked for a refund.

I went to her house, I did check the area and I fundo 104 SF more and three concrete steps. 1- Steps is more expense I charge for each step $150 = $450.00 and I gave her discount $200.00. 2- Total area 204 SF with the coupon she has 100 SF but the area has 104 SF more, I did charge $12 per SF. total $1,248.00 normal price +$250 steps =$1,498.00. but after I gave her the price she told me is to expense, then I told her I will give you little more discount because she's member Angie's List then she want more discount, I gave her more discount, then she ask me for blue prints, I told her I can't she need to pay more, then she ask me for permits I told her she need to pay more too. For total she wants to paid $799.00 only I'm very flexible man but I can't go to far. I'm sorry.

Make sure you make it clear to the owner or whoever does the estimate that you expect at least a week to 3 days notification before the work is scheduled to begin so that any necessary arrangements can be made. In my case there was no notification, although once I contacted the owner he said that he had tried calling me earlier that day and could not reach me because the phone number was not correct. I accept partial responsibility for this because the phone number I'd given him in an email was not correct. Still notification of an hour or two is really not enough. An email with more lead time would have been more approppriate. The workers were dispatched in any case and were sitting idly when I arrived home from running errands. They needed me to provide them with electrical power. Things worked out as well as they did only because I happened to be off from work that day and arrived home when I did. When the agreed upon time was up there was a small portion of my porch that was not completed. The worker suggested I schedule another session to finish it. I did not. And I still wonder whether the job could have been completed in full had I known when the work was scheduled and had been there to meet the workers when they arrived. Oh, well. MD
Description of Work: The workers did a good job repairing my brick porch wall, which had sustained storm damage. The work was good, but not excellent. The right side of the wall is noticeably lower than the rest of the wall.

Quick response, initial assessment and hand written proposal. Took a few weeks to get written proposal then another week and a half with me following up with them 2x to find out when was work to be scheduled. Once scheduled the contractors arrived on time and completed all but two of the items satisfactorily. The two items that were not completed once pointed out was rescheduled and performed as agreed.

Arranged to meet contractor for estimate no problem. It then took several months, numerous phone calls and, finally, calling the Angie's List staff to get them out to the job. The work was done nicely and appears to be exactly what was needed. Have not heard anything back from them in follow-up - the estimate was that it would go beyond the Big Deal limit, but either it didn't or their billing is as slow as everything else. While I would like to recommend them for the quality of their work, the whole experience was not worth the frustration.

I used them through a big deal on Angie's List. At the end of the day, I guess it turned out okay. But it was a somewhat frustrating experience. The same day that I bought the deal, I reached out and spoke to the owner of the company, Nestor. He said that he would be out on a certain date to evaluate the job. He ran late and he emailed me, which is fine. He came and suggested that I have my path power washed, which would be an additional $85; that was fine. I agreed that it was something that I wanted to do. He explained that the materials would cost a certain amount of money, which is fine and it was consistent with the deal that Angie's List ran which was just for the labor. He told me that his guys would be out two days later. I said that there is rain. He said that it would be fine. No one shows up and no one calls. For about three weeks, I proceed to call him 3-4 times a week. I get no return phone calls. Then last week, gentlemen just show up on my doorstep at 8 AM with no prior warning with a completely incorrect concept of the work that they were supposed to do. They were very nice people, but they didn’t understand. I had to call Nestor and remind him of what he had reviewed with me. Then I had to make sure that the two hours of work didn’t include the extra stuff I was paying them for. Ultimately, I am happy enough with the outcome. I spent $100. My path is not perfect, but that's fine. But the overall experience was not what I would have wanted it to be. I wouldn’t be able to recommend him because I am a real estate agent and he had every reason to be on top of things with me because I had told him frankly that if he is good, I will recommend him to my clients. I can't recommend somebody who is such a poor communicator. The big deal was for $99. It was $85 for the power wash. Then the materials were $20. He called me back because I couldn’t be here to pay when the guy left. He called me to get me to pay. He told me that he was very busy that time of the year and that it was hard to return phone calls.

Difficult to arrange times, didn't return calls. Asked for mortar to match existing mortar. Assured this would be done. Mortar was not close. When I first purchased the deal, a gentleman named Nestor quickly set up an appointment to come look at the work. Then nothing... I did not hear anything from this company for months. When I called and left a message, Nestor called me back and left a rambling message while he tried to locate my records. When I finally got an appointment, the time was for 8AM. I was going to wait for them to arrive before leaving for my job. Well, they were late, which made me late. I called Nestor, and he assured me that they were on their way. The work was quality work, just be prepared to wait.

I contacted Mr. Orlando after purchasing the big deal, and HE suggested a day and time for doing the work - 8/30 between 10 and 11 am. When he did not show up, at 11:45 I called and was told he was on his way, and would arrive by 12:30. I waited the entire day, but he never showed, nor did he call to let me know what the problem was. I sympathize with small business owners and the diffulties they may have in building a client base and taking on more than they can deliver, particularly when there is a language barrier which makes communication difficult. There are any number of legitimate reasons for his failure to make the appointment that I would have accepted and been happy to reschedule. But a no-show with no explanation or follow-up is not acceptable.

It went very well. The workmen were efficient and quick, cleaned up after themselves, were polite and pleasant - everything I could wish for.
