After seeing the great reviews on this company I called to get an estimate on a annual service I've had performed by another company for the last ten years. The representative on the phone said they would charge over $200 to come out and do an evaluation before they would give a price for treatment and that they would not do a free estimate for this type of work. Adirondack may be great at taking down trees but for my purposes, I don't think highly of firms that charge to come out and give an estimate. I clearly asked for an estimate, not an evaluation, never raised my voice and was told that to give a price on tent caterpillar treatment a $200+ evaluation was required.

Response from Adirondack Tree Experts
I remember this member vividly as I was in the office when he called. He requested an "evaluation" for tree care that he needed for his trees and he was advised that "evaluations" incur a charge of $200.00. He then explained that the same company "sprayed and injected" his trees for 10 years and he was searching for a better price but they never charged for an "estimate". My receptionist conveyed to him first and foremost that we did not provide the service that he was in search of and then attempted to explain the difference between an "evaluation", which is what he asked for, and an "estimate". He became irate and began berating my receptionist in such a way that I could hear him from 6 feet away. Before I could intervene and have a chat with him, he slammed the phone down. This member stated that he does not think highly of firms that charge for estimates. That is fine, we have never in 20 years charged for an estimate. I do not think highly of grown men who yell at young ladies and then slam the phone down on them!

This member is absolutely correct, we made it clear to her while providing the estimate that "Topping" trees in the State of Maryland is an unacceptable, license revoking practice that has long term severe effects on trees. That fact was clearly conveyed to this member! We explained that the tree was not in need of topping but rather deadwooding, light thinning and selective pruning. She whole heartedely agreed! She called the office, signed the proposal and scheduled the work. We arrived on the scheduled date and performed the services as specified on her signed proposal. Not once did she ever make another mention of the issue of "Topping". I am deeply disturbed that this member would act with such a blatent lack of integrity.

I contacted Adirondack in November for an estimate to have (3) very large trees removed and the grinding of (1) stump after the realization that these trees not only were a threat to my home but my safety as well. I had several estimates done, and all were within 1% of each other. I chose to hire Adirondack because of the reviews they received and that this was a VERY difficult job that was not easily accessible due to the power lines, utility lines and close proximity to my neighbors homes. Once I decided to hire Adirondack, I spoke with Jamie to confirm the work to be done, make sure signs would be posted, Miss Utility would be called etc and everything was in place. The morning of January 4th, they arrived on time around 7:30 and I was impressed with the operation I saw coming down my street. They had (2) cranes, a dump truck, the stump grinder, wood chipper and (3) smaller vehicles with the crew. I immediately, was greeted by Vinicio (the foreman) who confirmed the work to be done and accessed the man power needed. The entire crew was friendly, polite and went to work right away. I was impressed by the safety standards that the company has in place. Within 3 hours the 60' maple tree that had sprawled it's surface roots all across my front lawn was gone and all that remained was the stump. They then tackled the other (2) trees in the back of my yard. The only issue was that Miss Utility had not marked the underground utilities. It was confirmed that they were supposed to be there the afternoon on January 3rd, but this was beyond Adirondack's control and I understood. I spoke to both John and Cory Anna who were apologetic and assured me that the stump in my front yard would be grounded the following day. When I came home on January 7th, the stump and been grounded like promised. I was shocked by the size of the wood chips/shavings that was left, but I'm gradually spreading around my yard and will use it for mulch. I would just like to thank the entire team from Dan, Jamie, the receptionist, Bill, Venicio, Brian, Nathaniel, Cory, John and the entire crew for a job well done!

I contacted this provider due to an advertised Angie's List discount, but in fact the estimate came back just under the threshold for eligibility for the discount ($1000). The person who came to do the estimate arrived earlier than the agreed appointment, hence my husband was not able to be present as I had hoped for the full discussion of the work to be done. The resulting estimate seemed high, but I had limited time to get the work done, and in light of the company's positive ratings from Angie's List, decided to go ahead without getting alternative estimates. I later saw an Angie's List "big deal" advertised for a similar level of effort from another company -- four person-hours for similar tree services -- at less than one-third the price I paid, with the "regular" price being less than one-half of what I paid -- so I infer that I paid too much. The day prior to the scheduled service, the company posted signs against parking in front of my house (which I appreciated, but had not been told would be done). The tree service was originally scheduled for 9:00-11:00 am, but when the company called to confirm and left a phone message the day before, the timing was unilaterally revised to 10:00-12:00. (It was not clear whether this was the interval during which the services would be performed or simply the interval within which the crew would arrive; I had understood from reading other reviews that this had been a problem in the past, so only expected the work to be initiated by noon.) When no one had arrived by noon, we called and were told that the crew would be at our house within 30 minutes. The crew finally arrived about 1:10 pm, but by then I had to leave for another appointment. I was thus not able to be present while the work was being performed, and as a result a bit more was removed from one tree than I would have preferred, and a bit less was removed from another (but not extreme variances from what had been discussed during the estimate). According to my husband, the work was completed within 90 minutes. The work appeared to have been done to a high standard, so I was basically satisfied with the services rendered, but not with the price (in light of subsequently advertised prices from another company that were much lower as noted above), nor with the punctuality. I understand that unexpected delays can occur, but the company should have called to inform me of the delay. In the future, I would definitely seek estimates from other highly-rated companies before contracting with Adirondack again.

I would like to thank this member for her business and would also like to offer the following. There is absolutely no way to make the accusation that one is overcharged based on some type of "deal" that is offered on Angies List. No company advertises specific services as they relate to a specific residence for a specific amount of money. That is simply not possible in our industry. Each job must be individually evaluated as there are numerous factors that come in to play when estimating tree work. That is why estimates are NOT given over the phone, the work must be seen! Thus, I strongly dispute the claim that this individual was overcharged. Regarding punctuality, we did in fact arrive 10 minutes early for the estimate and for this we apoligize for the inconvenience that this has caused. We did in fact post "No Parking" signs in front of the residence so that we would have access to do the tree work, for this I also apoligize for any inconvenience that this has caused. Lastly, the crew was in fact 45 minutes late due to a runover on the job prior to this individuals job. Again, I sincerely apoligize for any inconvenience that this has caused and we will make a more concerted effort to be more timely. However, punctuality has never been an issue with our company as this individual has alleged. In 2012 we performed tree work for over 2740 customers, 12 of them complained that we were not on time. This is hardly a problem! Again, Thanks for your business!

It did not. I canceled the job due to their lack of professionalism and unwillingness to comply with District of Columbia and regulations regarding emergency no parking signs. The company representative arrived early to give us an estimate and did so in a professional manner and timely manner. When I called to get additional detail they were helpful so I decided to book the job. When I did so, I explained that I would be able to get the appropriate signage as we live on in a busy neighborhood of Northwest DC where parking is very limited all week. The District Department of Transportation requires regulation signage printed by DDOT or by a DDOT kiosk at a MPD station and then posted 72 hours in advance of the period for emergency parking limitations. A representative on the phone said they would take care of signs for parking. They neither got approved signs nor did they post them 72 hours in advance. They posted their own signs the day before the original schedule job. When my neighbor notified me of the illegal signage, I left a voicemail for the estimator/arborist in order to warn them that DDOT may not cooperate with towing any cars that were parked in the spaces corresponding with the company's signs. The next morning they told me they had to reschedule because of "wet conditions". When I called back and explained that I had walked around to all my neighbors the night before to leave notes for them regarding the tree trimming, they did not sympathize. Further, I asked that, were I to reschedule the job, would they post the appropriate signage? The response was "We will repost the signs as we have already done so". I can only assume that meant out of compliance so I terminated the job. I would not recommend using them if you live in DC and want to be in compliance.

This members issue had absolutely nothing to do with sign posting. She was asked, as we require of all customers who have potential parking issues, to discuss parking with her neighbors. As a courtesy, we post signs so as to remind folks of the scheduled work. On the day of this members scheduled work, we were forced to cancel due to rain. We immediately contacted her to re-schedule the job and were met with a loud boisterous tirade that was clearly deprived of mental clarity and sound judgement. We tried to explain that in our profession, working in wet trees is extremely dangerous. She would have none of that and demanded that we do the job immediately because she had talked to all of her neighbors and that they had moved their vehicles. Contrary to this members claim, WE DO sympathize when weather forces us to cancel and we make every effort to be as accomodating as possible when we re-schedule. After slamming the phone down on the office manager, our corporate counsel called her. He was met with the same demeanor, that of a small child throwing a fit because they did not get their way, at which time he advised her that we would no longer be willing to do business with her and he politely advised her to find another contractor. I found it interesting that in her post, she made a strong and immediate point to attempt to convey how she terminated us and that "we did not". If that makes her happy, I am happy for her. I would not recommend that any contractor who works in DC do work for this member as she is irrationale, rude and not at all in compliance with undertanding the risk to human life as it relates to performing tree work in the rain.

Did a very professional job of removing a tall tree in a crowded area near other town homes and cars. They protected both my home and others from the resulting debris. In less than an hour, the tree and stump were gone, and they even helped grind some of the remaining large roots near the surface. Very pleased with the result.

This is my second time calling ADIRONDACK TREE EXPERTS to help me. I felt really lucky that I got Mr. Dan to provide the free estimate both times. He came earlier than the schedule time and it's really easy to see that he loves trees much more than most of us. It makes me feel comfortable and confident to have the company he works for to help me with my request. What I would like to do this time is to remove a tree ( I forgot what kind of tree it is. ) in my yard. Because the company would not agree with a contract if the job does not worth $350, I added a trimming job in the contract to reach the limitation. On Sep 17th, the team supposed to come in the morning but did not arrive on time. I called the company to check the status. The representative called me back couple minutes later to apologize and told me the team would be late. It would be better if someone could contact me first. The team arrived in the afternoon. The leader verified with me what need to be done first before they started. As what they did last time, they finished the job very quickly and cleaned all the garbage away. The result was good and I was happy.
Description of Work: The second time I called the company to help me. This time I asked them to remove a little tree in my yard and some trimming job. The team came late but did the job well. Since time is not critical for me and I was still happy with the result. I still gave them a perfect point.

Adirondack's team showed up early in the window I was given (told between 9 and 11am, crew arrived at 9:45). They were incredibly efficient, but still very careful, in their removal process. The entire canopy and the upper part of the trunk was gone in the first hour! It took a bit longer to get the larger trunk section down and cut in to pieces. They ground down the stump and cleaned up the area really well, including using a leaf blower to get even tiny wood chips out of my driveway and my neighbors driveway. Most impressive, when a neighbor several houses down complained a few wood chips had blown onto his car, the Adirondack team hosed it off for him. Overall I was very pleased with the price and the work. I would highly recommend Adirondack!
Description of Work: Adirondack Tree Service removed a tree in my backyard that was an invasive species and partly hollow. Adirondack was by far the lowest bidder and even before applying a 10% off deal for tree removal over $400. The other two companies, both top rated on Angies List, were $500-800 more!! There was also an old metal fence post that the base of the tree had grown around. Other companies were reluctant to cut the tree very low or grind the stump, but Adirondack agreed to work around the pole and get as close as they could. In the end, once the tree was cut down to a low stump, the crew was able to get the pole out before grinding the stump down.

The estimator was on time and provided a quick, concise written estimate. We scheduled the work about one-week later - and their crew was quick and efficient. They were able to take our initial payment by phone and we left a check taped to the door. It was remarkable to see how safety focused their team was and how quickly they were able to remove a tree branch that their own staff referred to as a "widow-maker."

They cleaned out a tree that had fallen in my back yard from Sandy. They were even an hour early and had the work done in roughly an hour. The fallen tree was removed and branches that had gotten stuck in one of my trees were removed. They hauled away all of the debris and cleared away all the leaves in my back yard. They were careful to remove any patio furniture that might have been damaged by the tree removal. At the same time I had a trash mulberry tree removed. They were careful to avoid the wires overhead and thoroughly cleaned up afterwards. The gentleman that came to give me the estimate also gave me current insurance and licensing information without my having to ask. This is the second time i have used the services of the tree company and they do a superb job.

Despite an undoubted surge in business in the aftermath of storm Sandy, Adirondack arrived more or less as scheduled on November 6 and completed the work in about an hour including a complete cleanup of any debris that fell in my yard and the common area nearby. There was minimal damage to other trees through which their bucket truck had to work to access the upper parts of the limb to be removed. My only complaint was that the work was scheduled for between 9 and 11 AM, and they only arrived at ~ 10:55 AM. They never called me to say there would be a delay; in fact, I had to call them to confirm the work was still on for that morning. Work was completed by noon. Someone with a less flexible work schedule than mine could have been put in a bind by their lateness.
Description of Work: I called them for an estimate for taking down a major tree limb (one that spanned my entire yard) in October, 2012, and they didn't have an opening for one in my neighborhood for something like ten days, but they arrived promptly on schedule and offered an estimate that was ~ 25% less than another Angie's List-recommended service. Adirondack proposed to take down more of the tree than the other service, but I finally decided that that was probably the wiser course, though sentimentally, I would have preferred to keep more of the tree.

As always, I thank this member for his business and I appreciate the positive comments regarding the overall quality of our service. However, I am a bit puzzled by the complaint about our "lateness". This member stated that he was given a 2 hour arrival window and that we had arrived at his residence within this 2 hour window. Our records confirm exactly what he claims, we arrived within the window he was given. I'm at a loss for words, but again, thanks for your business!

Adirondak's crew came promptly on the day of service. They hustled--actually running to catch limbs as they fell. They worked well as a team, with each man having clearly defined duties. They cleaned up debris immediately and did not leave a mess. Prior to the day of service, their knowledgeable estimator provided valuable advice on which limbs needed pruning, and he gave me a fair price which they adhered to. Also, their very friendly and competent office staff called to confirm both appointments and I received email confirmation as well.

Hurricane Sandy uprooted a tree in my backyard. I checked the Angieslist for the best reviewed local tree service companies and Adirondack Tree Experts popped up. Initially I submitted an online request, but didn't get any response--quite understandable since after the Hurricane Sandy all tree service providers were fully booked. So I picked up my phone and called them directly. A very nice lady answered and asked about the nature of the service I wanted and my address. No sooner after I gave her my address than she told me that she retrieved my previous online request, and it happened that two other houses on my street also needed tree service. They had arranged that all these three houses would be serviced on the same day. Adirondack Tree Experts came before 8 am on the booked date. My house was the 3rd one on the list. They not only cut and removed the tree, but also cleaned the mess around the tree left by the storm. The price for this service? They charged at a rate much lower than I expected. Pleasantly surprised!!! By the way, I also asked those two neighbors about how they got to know Adirondack Tree Experts. They told me that their friends recommended this company. I highly recommend Adirondack Tree Experts to anyone who needs tree services.

Flawless and punctual service throughout. They arrived when they said they would to provide the estimate. The estimate was fair based on my reviews of other tree service companies on Angie's List, given that this was a very large tree. After I sent in the estimate, they called to schedule the service, which was about two weeks from the estimate. They arrived promptly on the service date and performed the job without a hitch. They needed to cut part of the fence down to bring down the tree; I had expected this. They let me know beforehand that they would have to do it, and got my permission. When they were done, the tree was gone and there was no mess whatsoever. A perfect experience. I will say that I have used them once before for a smaller job and my experience was similar.

I checked Angie's List against tree-service firms in the Washington Consumer Checkbook, and Adirondack got the highest ratings (price AND quality) in both places. Because of summer storm damage, the firm couldn't come for the estimate for 5 weeks. But they did the work at my convenience promptly after that, just as they said they would. The estimator was knowledgeable. He stuck a pushpin in each tree to be worked on--a simple tactic that minimized the chance for mistakes. The crew of 5, mostly Spanish speakers, came with their grinding and chipping equipment and blew through the work in about 3.5 hours. My only complaint (very minor) is that they came at 7:45 am when I'd been told to expect them "around 10." Office staff is friendly and helpful, too. Please start your search for tree-cutters with Adirondack. You won't be disappointed.

Adirondack did an excellent job removing the trees and grinding and removing the stumps. This was a particularly difficult job because my backyard is difficult to access - small gate, lots of stonework, etc. We had a few bumps with property damage resulting from the removal of the trees., but the Company exceeded my expectations in terms of how it handled it. The owner worked with me directly, and all damages were repaired promptly. Mistakes happen even to the best of us --- and I was really impressed with how Adirondack handled the situation. They are real professionals. I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend their services to others -- especially those with difficult tree situations.
Description of Work: Adirondack removed one very large dying maple tree and one smaller tree from my backyard, ground the stumps, and also did some pruning of other trees. It was a tough job due to the location of the trees.

They took down a very tall locust tree cut high branches off two elm trees and removed a big branch from an oak tree. Was impressed with their skill level and efficiency.
Description of Work: They arrived a little later than expected. The foreman reviewed the job with me and went to work. The guy doing the climbing and cutting was young but he knew what he was doing. I have done tree work in the past and was impressed with their safety precaution. The crew was very professional. i was very pleased with their work.

I engaged this company to trim two large willow trees in my yard. They were punctual, courteous, did the job I wanted, and cleaned up after themselves. The price was reasonable. What more can I ask?

Service was excellent in all respects - both the original estimate and the actual work. They did an especially good job in removing debris: my patio was cleaner after the job than before.

Very professional service and very helpful. Tree expert came out and reviewed our situation. Rather than recommending a lot of work that we thought we might need (based on advice from a different company that never followed up after the initial consult), he pointed out simpler ways of doing things that would be safe and effective and not involve a very large financial outlay. He recommended one high-importance trimming action, which we agreed on, and they promptly came out and completed this service. The crew as very professional, neat, and worked quickly and efficiently. A very good experience.

I called Adirondack and a few other companies from Anglies list. So here was what went well: Adirondack responded to my inquiry and we set up an appointment for me to meet with someone the following week for an estimate. The man arrived to do the estimate exactly when he said he would, we spoke for a couple of minutes where i told him that we really loved this tree and the shade it provided, however we wanted to take care of it and maintain it and so felt that some of the dead branches should be removed. He agreed and quoted a price of $450. After dicussing it with my husband we decided to go with Adirondack not because they had the best price (which they did), but because they were the only one that set up and appointment for me to meet their tree expert (as opposed to just having someone stop by within a certina time frame and submit the estimate via email) and i wrongly assumed that because i was able to tell him exactly what we wanted we were more likely to get it. The workers came exactly when the appointed time was, were very quick (it took about an hour) and left the lawn spotless. the bad: We have no shade! Our *lightly* thinned tree looks like one of those Pepco trees... basically just a shell of the tree that it use to be. I'm extreamly disapointed since when the workers came, i also went out to speak to them and explained that we loved this tree, loved the shade and in particular loved the shade around where we had rope tied for a swing - and could they take special care of that area. Now i'm not a tree expert, and maybe this is what *lightly* thinning looks like, but this definitly not what i discussed with the workers nor with the individual who provided us the estimate. When the workers first started taking down big healthy leafy branches i went outside to say that this seemed like a lot of leaves (i.e. healthy branches), and that really we just wanted the dead branches removed. They said ok, and that they were just *lightly trimming*, i said "ok can you trim even lighter then, since i still want some shade." Back into the house and then when i looked out a few minutes later, again the ground was covered in branches with healthy green leaves. So i went outside again and asked for them to stop. They said "we are trying to open up the tree for the wind to get through." I explained that i didn't care about the wind i cared about my shade. The worker then pointed to the work order and said "see it says to *lightly thin the tree.* Again i told him that i didn't care and that this was way too much. At that point they came down from the tree and began cleanup. Again, this may be standard practice with tree service (they may all try and help air flow/movement) and this may be what *lightly* thining looks like, but since i spoke with the individual who provided the estimate as well as the workers multiple times about how much we value the shade- i'm extreamly dissapointed that we have no shade left in our backyard. The tree is still there, but they removed so many branches that the sunlight filters down to the entire yard. I will never again use Adirondack tree service. If you want about 1/3- 1/2 of your tree "thinned" or you want a tree compleatly removed i'm sure they are great. If you want to keep some of the shade that a tree provides, i recomend looking elsewhere.
Description of Work: removed dead branches and *lightly* thinned a mature maple tree.

Response from Adirondack Tree Experts
We thank this member for the positive aspects of this review. However, we are disappointed to learn that she is not satisfied with our work. This review is the first and only time the member has mentioned her dissatisfaction. She was home when the work was performed and she never said that she was unhappy with the work. As of the day of this response (10/9/2012), she has not contacted our office to express her dissatisfaction. The quality of our work is very important to us and we pride ourselves on performing the best tree service possible. If a customer is not satisfied, we will address the situation and we would like the opportunity to do so before reading about it on Angie’s List. The owner of the company who is an ISA Certified Arborist and Maryland Licensed Tree Expert personally inspected the tree. The proposal given to the member called for the dead wood to be removed from the tree, for the tree to be lightly thinned, and the lowest limb toward the house to be removed. The work was done exactly as specified in the proposal. The tree was lightly thinned. The amount of shade in the yard was never discussed with our arborist and it is impossible for any arborist to trim a tree to achieve certain amounts of shade. The purpose of thinning a tree is to achieve more sunlight penetration and to allow better air flow. If the member just wanted the removal of the dead wood as she states in her report, then she should not have contracted for the thinning of the tree. Once again, I regret that this member did not give us the opportunity to address this situation prior to this report and we thank her for the business.
