M.T.Rupard painting and drywall

We contacted Mr. Rupard in May 2013 and he came out for an estimate on the correct date, but incorrect time. He sent us a estimate of $535 for drywall repair and hanging a ceiling in a 12'X14' area, and $300 for painting the basement; he then came a second time to review the job. He scheduled to arrive on July 16, but did not start until July 29 because he was still working on a previous job. He came out at about 8am on July 29 and then left for approximately 3 hours, returned with the necessary materials and worked until 4pm. We were concerned when he left because very little work had been done- he had replaced drywall, approximately 8" x 62', along the floor to cover what had been removed due to previous waterproofing. The next morning after hanging the first sheet he miss-marked the drywall and frequently missed the joist. I had to leave for an appointment and when I returned, he'd hung the entire 12x14 ceiling. It was a mess: *the joints were not staggered, *the ends of the wallboard were left hanging in between joists, *I could read the labels on the side edge of 2 pieces of the wall board, *most boards could be pressed on as the screws missed the joist and several had no screws and were hanging, *there were large gouges where he'd miss-screwed or ripped the drywall, *In the far corner, he had 4" strips of drywall laying on top of the partially screwed in full sheets, *just about every corner of each wall board was damaged. All of the boards are damaged beyond repair and cannot be reused to properly and neatly hang the drywall. I confronted him the next morning and he told me that this is how raw drywall looks and that it would all be fixed by layers of mud, including the 2 inch gap between the boards and the oblong 2.5 inch gap against the wall. In addition he stated that one joist was lower than the others as it met the corner above a window. You could see this because the drywall he'd hung was 3 inches lower on one side than the other. As this was the very first sheet he'd hung, why wouldn't you stop at that point and remedy the situation as opposed to letting it slope and look sloppy?? He was immediately dismissed from the job before any mudding/taping began and requested $400 (75% of the estimate!). He was extremely angry that I only gave him $200 and told me that I was ungodly and that a man should be paid honest wages for honest work. He then stormed out of my house leaving all trash laying on the floor in a bag. I am now very angry that I did that because once the drop cloth was removed, there were gouges in our brand new expensive slat laminate flooring that was laid 2 months prior. In addition to the gouges, there is spray foam stuck to the floor in several places. All of the work was done by Mr. Rupard himself.
