Description of Work: My neighbors had a fence built by Excel fencing recently and based on the quality and a coupon offered on Angie's List, I contacted them to set up an appointment. I communicated to the person responding to the email that I was interested in building a fence and having some work done on my deck to repair or replace warped and loose boards and refinish it with a solid coating so that the new boards would not be so obvious. She scheduled the appointment for 5:30 for an estimate. The day of the appointment, I received text messages asking if the appointment could be made earlier, bu I explained that I work until 5pm and had to pick up my daughter at day care on the way home. I arrived a few minutes before the appointed time and the gentleman was already waiting for us. When I explained what we would want ideally, he explained that there was no way that our HOA would allow the fence. After about 20 minutes of his time (which he made clear was very valuable), I finally convinced him to give me a "worst case" price by measuring the full yard, understanding that it would likely be less if the HOA required easements and only let us fence the rear of the yard. I asked if he could take a look at the deck, but he stated that they don't do that sort of work (after I had described it in detail to the person doing the scheduling). He promised a written estimate in a few days, but over a month later, I'm pretty sure it's not coming. I didn't pursue it further because I'm not interested in hiring someone who so clearly doesn't want my business.

He was honest and seemed knowledgeable about my wants and needs even if I couldn't articulate what I wanted from the fence. As of right now he is my top choice once $$$ can be acquired.

Description of Work: Excel installed approximately 300 feet of split rail w/ wire mesh fencing with three gates around my yard. Total work time was 2 full days (16 hours) from start to finish with a crew of 3. Very pleased with their work - cutting through heavy brush, dealing with many grade changes around the yard, and making sure the fence was just where I wanted it. The crew went the extra mile to make give a nice finished look to my semi-rustic fence. They used good quality material, were on time, and an absolute breeze to deal with from making the initial appointment, to getting the estimate, to getting the work done.

+ 0 moreThe job could have gone smoother. Charlie knew I had just been through a bad experience with a previous contractor, and I definitely do not like confrontation. Unfortunately, this overall experience left me feeling defensive once again. First he told me on the phone he could give me an estimate in the $5,000s to beat the competition. Then the estimate came in at $6250 including a 5% discount for paying with cash. I was desperate and tired of getting estimates and decided to go with him anyway. Then, he ordered my supplies and had them delivered to my driveway before my permit was issued. He told me it could be up to 10 days before it was issued (and I am thinking; if it is issued at all). Luckily the delay was only one day. The crew came to work Thursday and dug the footers. They also worked Friday and built the frame. A winter storm was predicted for Sunday night, which everyone knew about.it. However, the crew left all their big tools and supplies out in the yard. And they did not volunteer to work Saturday, which was a beautiful warm day. Then, it snowed as predicted Sunday night and they did not come Monday. My kids could not play in the yard all weekend. It is Wednesday now and they just finished. The deck looks good but I had some concerns about siding. I pointed out a large loose piece of siding they had cut to put in flashing, and asked if he could secure it. He snidely told me," I'm not here to fix your siding." I had also asked earlier if he would cut 2 pieces of siding for me to replace 2 broken pieces bordering the deck. Not too much to ask, right? But it was not cut because his blade broke. No offer to come out later and fix it. As with the previous "bad contractor," they underestimated the time it would take and wanted to settle up after the end of a long day, The settling up experience made me uncomfortable as it was raining and we had the confrontation about the siding. My yard and driveway is left now a muddy mess. I guess I can't blame them for the yard, but maybe they could have put out cardboard or something. Maybe they will come back tomorrow and clean my driveway and sow some grass......right.
