Smith Auto Glass

A prior windshield installation at this Smith Auto Glass shop went flawlessly, so I didn't hesitate to return to this very convenient downtown location for my most recent windshield when another truck on I-95 sent a stone my way. On picking up the car, I noticed many dark specks on the dashboard, but didn't think much of it, and wiped it aoff. The next day, when I turned on the defroster, dry, black irregular gunk flew out of the front vents and the fan motor was suddenly noisy. I called immediately and took the car back later that week. The man who did the windshield tried to put compressed air into the vents to try to dislodge the particulate matter (which later was found to be rust that the tech had to scrape around my windshield) he tried his best, but the noise and gunk persisted, and the man in the office suggested it might be something already in the air fan, telling a story of how a matchbook had caused him much grief years ago. I assured them the defroster fan was not noisy before the windshield install, but it felt like the staff didn't want to admit that this happened. When the owner got involved, I felt he took the problem to heart, he apologized, and he tried to help, but I felt that this auto glass shop wasn't going to be able to fix things. I must admit I was also a little afraid of breathing particles in my own car. Long story short, at least two visits back, discussions with the office, I found that the tech had neglected to cover the air vents before scraping the rust away from the inside of the windshield. Later I was told the tech no longer worked there . I'll admit they tried, but I felt that they just weren't going to be able to fix the problem. I ended up going to my dealer and having them remove and clean the air unit. This cost about what the windshield cost. This was an easily avoidable problem.
