Our kitchen had a gas stove and we wanted to convert it to electric. John Baguyos and son came out to cap off the gas line. I was very pleased with the work and the professionalism. I would chose them again when plumbing needs arise in the future.

Our Drain pump in the Laundry Room finally gave out after 20+ years. After seeing the many commercials, as well as the reviews on this site, I gave them a call. They were able to schedule an appointment the next business day (actually would have come that afternoon, but my schedule did not permit). John & John (Father and son) showed up on time, were helpful and respectful to my home. They explained everything that needed to be done, how the components worked, and explained my options. There was no pressure when I chose the less expensive option. It really could not have gone better. They also performed a free inspection of my home, and made some other suggestions. Even made me a good deal on replacing the water hoses for the washing machine. Great folks, great work. I'm sure I'll be calling them again.

He was an older gentleman so I thought he should no his stuff...copper piping specifically which we have. Before he came I read up on replacing a Diverter Stem and watched a 6 minute video on replacing it. My husband did not feel comfortable enough to do it himself so we contacted M&S. They were quick to setup an appointment which was awesome, they even gave me the exact day I time I wanted. Super wonderful. The technician, however, stunk. He said that coming over at 4pm to replace a Diverter Stem was a bad time because it can take quite awhile to replace. Again, I just watched a 6 minute video on replacing one from beginning to end. Really???? He asked us what brand the current stem was. I thought that he was the master plumber and would recognize it by eye. I do in my field as a Systems Engineer, but okay. I looked up diverter stem photos. My husband recognized what he saw. It was Pfister. The plumber was concerned about replacing it because he could break the plumbing. He didn't even try and take it off....just made this assumption. Needless to say we paid him his $28 to get out of my house. I called my friend from work and asked if he would look at it on his way home the next day. He did. The plumber said because the part was over 10yrs old it would be hard to find a part for it. My friend, Josh, said as long as it is in the Century we are Golden. We went to Home Depot and got the part. Josh sprayed a little WD-40 on it and slowly removed the original Diverter Stem. Put some plumbers tape on the threads of the new one to help it come off in the future, put everything back together/on....voila! I have a dirverter valve functioning properly. Only cost me dinner at my house with him. I do not recommend using a company who sends technicians who know less than my friends (who are not professional plumbers) and who know less than a 6 minute YouTube video: [weblink removed] People are human...they make mistakes. I get it. I also don't expect you to know everything, but at least contact someone on your team to help if you don't have the answer or are scared to do it. That is why we call the "experts" because we are afraid to do it ourselves.
Description of Work: They provided no services. They tech came out and I was charged $28 for his just showing up.

We had Michael's & Sons in to perform routine air conditioner service in the spring, roughly April. The technicians were capable & friendly. They did include an expensive addition, but the technician assured me that the part was in danger of breaking over the next year or so, & it would necessitate an additional service call to replace it if that happened. That service, if I were to rate it, would be B or B+. On the basis of that service, we asked Michael & Sons to estimate costs for a water heater replacement in August. That didn't go so well. The estimator was condescending, and the estimate was off the charts. We were told the technology of most water heaters would be outdated soon, so we'd need to spend over $1.2k to add electrical service to our gas unit, re-do the venting, and possibly switch out the gas meter (an additional cost from the utility company), and perhaps replace our service panel (again a huge cost) in order to accommodate a 50 gallon unit priced at $2655.86. Or, we could go for a tankless unit at about $4.5 k. So we decided against their proposal. And we probably won't seek other services from this or any other mega-provider. Stay local, with small businesses.

Ted Westwood is an excellent plumber with incredible professionalism and superior customer service skills. Ted understood that our family was hit with an unexpected situation and we had 45 years of plumbing issues which needed to be corrected. Ted went out of his way to communicate with me each work day. I knew what to expect and Ted delivered on every commitment and promise he made to me. His work is great. I recommend when you call Michael & Sons to request Ted Westwood to work on your indoor plumbing. Ted Westwood is best, kindest and most considerate plumber or any trade professional that I have ever met.

The sales representative sold us an air conditioner and home generator unit. The sales rep. came out twice, the first to get a sense of the sizes of both units needed for our size house and the second time to take more measurements for the setup outside of our house that would adhere to our county's inspection guidelines. The air conditioner was installed with little problem--the installation of the generator has been nothing but problems. We were told by the generator installation crew that our electrical box needed replacement (at a cost of @$3000) to pass inspection. We were not expecting any significant additional costs associated with the unit and this "extra" took us quite by surprise. We felt that the sales rep. did not do his job well because this was entirely foreseeable if the time and care was taken initially. Aside from the cost of the new electrical box we had to take time off of work each time a worker came out. This has added up over the months of the installation process. The electrician from Michael & Sons who replaced the electrical box inadvertently disconnected our phone line coming into the house which we had to take time of of work to have a Verizon technician come out and fix it. After the electrical and plumbing was completed, both of these entities needed to be inspected by the county where we lived. Both electrical and plumbing failed the inspection. Thus, we not only had to take time off of work for the inspections, but now need to take time off of work twice more to have them bring these things "up to code," and then get them reinspected. The work is still not completed. Lastly, we noticed that our gutter was accidentally damaged, we think by the generator installer's truck. We took pictures of gutter and sent them onto Michael & Sons for remuneration for the damage. They claimed, after talking with the technicians that they were not at fault and refused to acknowledge that it was their fault. We are totally frustrated by how we have been treated and the lack of professional workmanship by the installers and electrician, both of whom failed the county inspections. More importantly, we have been thoroughly disappointed with the way in which the company has dealt with us with regard to the home generator--all starting with the sales rep. who takes no responsibility for the initial lack of inspection necessary to deliver a quote for the costs that would not include surprises down the line when pulling out of a project would seem unwise. In fact, the sales rep. misquoted the price of the air conditioner unit and had to retract (with his sincerest apologies) a signed contract for the original price. We told him that it seemed like an honest mistake--what we should have done right then is to get out of the contract all together. We hope others take note. This was not a positive experience for us!
Description of Work: We hired Michael & Sons to replace our air conditioner and air handler plus install a full size home generator at the end of June. The work on the generator is still not completed as of 10/15/2013.

Took 3 weeks to get the part and get it installed. It was supposed to be a surprise for a relative while she was out of town on vacation but she ended up having to be the one to supervise the installation. Was almost installed poorly but the end-user balked so they then tried a little harder to fix it. The faucet itself is sub-par in quality and is not standardized so an inexpensive aerator cannot be attached. I guess I'm just disgusted with the whole deal. I feel I've been ripped off and the relative I was trying to pleasantly surprise is not at all happy with the job. In fact, she asked to keep the old faucet in case she wants to reinstall the old one.

This service went very well. Both the plumber and the electrician were very prompt, communicated well and new what they were doing. Their customer service department are also very nice, prompt and very experienced. They were able to get our plumbing issues fixed as well as install our new outlet quickly so that we could hook up our new appliances. The only pause I have is with the pricing. To me, it seemed a little high however I have nothing to compare it to. I would still not hesitate to use this company again and actually have plans to have them install and wire 2 new fans in a week or two. Their prices might be a little high in my opinion but they are certainly not unfair.

Based on an earlier Angie's List review, we had some electrical work done by Michael & Sons in the spring of this year. While I'm very happy with that, we've learned since then that we were severely overcharged. However, we'd signed up for a Household Maintenance Contract during that earlier project. So when the hot water tank failed on a holiday weekend, who do you call? I called on Saturday morning, but they could not provide me a time when someone could come out until Sunday afternoon. So, we scheduled the appointment for between 2-6 PM on Sunday. At 7 PM, I got a call from the dispatcher stating that they'd not be able to make the run at all, and would Monday work? I reminded them that I'd been waiting over 24 hours already, and no, it wouldn't. The dispatcher said he'd handle it, and then never called back. I ended up calling back at 10 PM, and begging for a technician. The tech called me 30 minutes later, and said he'd be there within an hour. So at 11:30, the tech shows up. Very nice, very professional. He comes in, takes a very brief look at the tank, tries to light it once, and pronounces it dead. We started discussing options, and he provided me with an estimate. $2240 to replace the tank and upgrade everything to current code. Thankfully, sticker shock kept me from agreeing to anything. I did some research, and found that the total cost for everything that was mentioned in the estimate was less than $800. Furthermore, I was able to research and determine the cause of the failure - a faulty thermocouple unit: $12, and less than an hour's work to replace. The M&S tech could have easily said "Oh yeah, here's the problem, let me get that out of the truck right now" and replaced the thermocouple. This would have resulted in a review that said "Yeah, they're expensive, but worth it." The plumber that came out on Tuesday morning was able to do just that, and has now earned all my future business. The big blue van is nice. The custom door mats, funny blue slippers, and all the rest are cool. But does it really take $2228 worth of price gouging to maintain that system? Since when are plumbers actually salesmen in disguise?
Description of Work: Showed up late for a service call, failed to properly diagnose the problem, failed to repair system. Provided an estimate of astronomical proportions for replacement, not repair, of hot water heater. We waited well over 24 hours for an emergency truck roll.

There is nothing like going into the basement to check on a load of laundry at 2am only to discover water spraying everywhere like some WW2 submarine movie. A quick look around revealed the source of the water to be the expansion tank our county code requires. I shut off the feed to stop the flood and began to call all the 24/7 emergency plumbing numbers in the yellow pages to see if anyone could make the repair as I really needed hot water later that morning. I dialed somewhere between a dozen to two dozen companies and all were already busy or simply did not have an expansion tank on a truck in the field. Even Michael and Son Services said they could not help me when I called. I was out of luck. 30 minutes or so after giving up the phone rings. Its a technician from Michael and Son. I assume he is doing a follow-up and told him I knew they had no one who could help me, but he says "no", he is maybe 30 minutes away and can come over if I am interested. "You bet!" says I and somewhere around 4am he rolls up in a seriously large blue truck, takes a look around, confirms the problem, installs the tank, tells me its a good idea to replace them every 5 years or so as they can, and do, fail catastrophically from age. (Too bad the plumbers who installed it in the first place didn't remember to tell me that!) I have little experience with plumbers so I have no idea if the price is fair or not. I expect the part would cost maybe $25-50 at Home Depot. I know there was an $89 fee for emergency service. That puts labor around $275 or so but I don't care. I really needed that fixed and they did so in a polite, professional manner. The technician was a pleasure to have in the house and I am very pleased with the service I received and would not hesitate to call them again for another plumbing job.

The two values were replaced at a cost of $473.28. The plumber double charged for digging a 12'' hole to clear the drain. The line item "Condense Drain Stoppage" appeared on the invoice twice at cost of $284.44 each. That is a total of $568.88 to dig a 12'' hole. According to my wife, the plumber maintained that the first charge was to dig the hole and second was to fill it back in. While this is complete nonsense, as a point of fact the hole was not filled back in because it needed to be left open to drain! Additionally when my wife asked for advice as to how to fix the drainage problem altogether, the contractor proposed an illegal solution that would encroach on county-owned property. He offered no lawful, permit-endorsed suggestion for resolving the problem. He simply charged my wife $568 to dig a 12'' hole. I contacted the company to dispute this charge and they were responsive in correcting the overbilling. While I was not pleased with how Mr. Jason Hickman overcharged my wife, I am satisfied with the price and quality of the value replacements. I am also satisfied overall now that the company has corrected the overcharge.
Description of Work: The provider, "Michael and Son Services", Elkridge MD ( http://www.michaelandson.com) was asked to replace two valves and clear a clogged drain. The drain to be cleared required a 12'' hole to be dug to clear the end of a pipe. My wife instructed the plumber as to where to dig.

First w/re: to the AC: when I called for the appt I explained the AC compressor was dead and the 33yr old furnace needed to be replaced. I specifically asked if the had 5 pm or after availability and was told the latest estimate was 2:00 pm. I then asked if I, the homeowner had to be present or if ok fir my adult son to be there instead. I was told this was fine. When the gentleman arrived he called me to say it was nearly impossible to give an estimate w/o me being there b/c I needed to select the models I wanted (this was not my experience w/two other estimates) and that if I had requested it it would've been able to come at 5 pm! I explained what I was told and asked if he could leave me three estimates reflecting 3 various price points and was told yes. However, when I got home there was only was estimate. Second w/re: to the electrical: when I called I asked if they offered free estimates and was told yes. The person took all my information including detailed info about the problem. Then, at the END of the call I was told about a $29 dispatch fee. When I said to cancel she agreed to waive the $29. However, once the gentleman arrived he said there was a close to $200 diagnostic fee!! How is this a free estimate and why wasn't I told this when I made the appt? I felt like this was a bait and switch move on Michael and Son's part. Needless to say I went with a different company!
Description of Work: I had two different experiences one related to AC/furnace and the other to electrical. They were both for estimates.
