The person who did the work was very professional, very friendly, and very willing to do extra things outside of the scope of what she initially planned on or initially agreed to do so we would ask her what about doing this and she said that she can do it. She worked the entire day at our house, it was incredibly hot and she's very well mannered. She did a great job and we're just very impressed with her. If we came up something that we were interested in having her looking to do, she will check it to see if it is possible. In one instance, it was not going to be easy to do and it was going to cost quite a bit of extra money in order to do it that way, she came up with an alternative and we went up doing that instead, she was trying to keep our cost small as possible but still gave as what we wanted. We kept coming out her with things and she was very willing to help us out.
Description of Work: There was an installation of a bathroom fan where there was nothing existing before. They did installation of electrical boxes in the middle of the ceiling and wiring for the ceiling fan. They also did switch replacement in each of the room. There was a light in the ceiling fan.

First visit, the plumber estimated the job. Had to order the special toilet I wanted. Next visit, he completed all of the work. I am very satisfied with the work and the professionalism of the plumber. I was not satisfied with the time he came on the first visit (3:50 p.m. on a 12-4 time slot and an hour after he called to tell me he was on the way) and on the second visit, (3:30 for a 2:00 appointment.) Fair price and work well done.
Description of Work: Installed new toilet and repaired pipe and replaced outside water spigot.

They were very professional and very courteous when they came to work for us. They were very good. They definitely know what they were doing. They were here a few times last year. They guy was courteous and he did his work. We had other issues in the house and he helped so it went great. Their price was a little bit high.

Our technician was Paul Duffy and he was great! Very knowledgeable, courteous and professional. He did a super job wiring (home runs) from the outside FIOS feed to several rooms. He arrived promptly, studied the situation for each room and set about running lines outside as well as through duct chase areas, etc. The second part of this job was to run a new Cat5 line from the Verizon telephone box to the detached office because the original line(s) were shorted. Paul found the breaks in the underground PVC chases , realigned them, and then ran a new line to the office. The cost was high, but the service was excellent - especially in 97 degree summer heat! I am not a fan of big name, do-it-all service providers who typically way over-charge for their services. And we've turned down plumbing service from this company because the cost was too high. But Paul's electrical knowledge and service for this job was well worth it. This was not an easy job. Ask for Paul if you are considering having electrical work done with Michael & Son. We'd have him return again if the need arises.

My neighbor knowing we were looking for an electrician call to let me know that she had one at her house this morning and that based upon the service she rec'd, we might want to consider him coming over to talk about the work we wanted done. She put Paul Duffy on the phone. I talked with him, he was free immediately but rather than try to do an under-the-table deal, had me call his dispatcher to have him scheduled to come (immediately) to our home. I did it and he was over in less than 15 minutes. We explained the various items we (my husband and I) wanted him to do and/or estimate. First, he tested the surge protectors. We live in a highly forested area where trees are often hitting power lines during storms causing lots of surges and blackouts. So, while these 15 year old surge protectors looked like they were working (lights on), it actuality they had been compromised. He offered two models explaining the pros and cons of each without pushing towards the higher end mode. At the end of the day, we went with the more cost effective models which he installed quickly all the while explaining to us what he was doing and why he was doing it. Next were the under cabinet lighting. He checked to make sure that there was current running from the wall switch to the step down transformer to the fixtures. Seeing that the power was getting through, he recommended the up-to-date type of strip lighting we should look for and indicated how my husband could install it and save money. Nice. Finally, was the sunroom circuitry rebalancing. Indicated that the best option would be for us to determine where we were experiencing overloading and then, call back for the company to send an electrician (we would want him) to come and redistribute the circuit coverage. He was very honest, very knowledgeable, was not trying to sell things or services we did not need. He emphasized how much Michael & Son stressed customer satisfaction in all the company training and that having worked with other companies, they really meant it. So, bottom line. We had a great experience and will definitely be asking for him, again. And, we may even consider signing up for the company's Home Care Agreement! Definitely would recommend.
Description of Work: Checked our all house surge protectors (which had not been working) and installed new ones; checked the under cabinet lighting to determine what needed to be done for replacement; discuss load rebalancing in the two circuit breaker panels for better performance across the house.

The response time by the plumbing department was impeccable. My water main was turned off due to the "leak", which did as much damage in a matter of a few hours, restricting water to sinks, showers, toilets, etc. They came and completed the repair the same day that I called, and my plumbing was immediately back in working order. The handyman department was quite the opposite. The estimator came out and surveyed the damage, and made some notes. He told me that he would type up the proposal and send it to me the following week. After a week had passed, I called the company, who told me that they would get in touch with the estimator. The same day I received a proposal for the work, with no cost estimate. I called back again and asked them to please follow up on it. They resent the proposal with the cost, which I submitted to my insurance company, because the work is covered under my homeowner's insurance. After several days, I contacted my insurance company, which informed me that they were not on the list of people that Michael and Son was authorized to discuss the work with. After calling back to the company, they said that they did have the insurance company on the list, and that they had talked to them. I received notification that the insurance company wanted to discuss the particulars of the repair with the estimator, and were waiting for a call back from the estimator supervisor. I followed up myself with Michael and Son several times. The first time, the service rep at the handyman department said she was going to look into it and call me back. After not receiving a call, I called back the next day and explained to the new rep the situation. He said he would follow up on it. I asked him if someone would call me back, and he said that the estimator would likely return my call. After having not heard anything, i called again and spoke to the same rep. I tried to explain to him that the insurance company wanted to confirm the work that was specified on the proposal, reading him what was required of them by the insurance company to cover the repairs. His response was that the company does not work with insurance companies, that I needed to get the work done and submit the claim to the insurance company. I told him that the insurance company would not cover it if they did not receive a thorough explanation of the work from the estimator. I originally selected Michael and Son based on their reviews on Angie's List, because they received so many good reviews. I am not familiar what the cost for extensive water damage repairs are, so I am uncertain of the value of the work. Because I informed them that I would be taking the work elsewhere, I do not know the quality. But what I do know is that the department at least, is incredibly unprofessional, and while they may be good at what they do if you pay up front, they will not complete any work if it requires coordination with an insurance company. My experience with this company was incredibly frustrating and a waste of my time and effort.
Description of Work: The expansion tank on my water heater began leaking, spraying on to the adjacent walls, and leaking into the ceiling of the kitchen below. The expansion tank was replaced and repaired, and the resulting drywall damage was estimated and a proposal was provided.

They were excellent. They initially came out just to replace the water heater and after that was fixed I noticed the toilets were not.draining properly. So the technician came back in and tried cleaning the pipes with an auger until they could come back the next day with a camera to further investigate. They showed me the findings with the camera that roots had gotten into the pipes and where the pipes were cracked. They fully explained the necessary steps to do all the repairs. They had to use a back-ho and dig 6 feet down to get to all the damaged pipes and replace them. I was very impressed at the timely and efficient manner in which they fixed the problems. It took a total of two days which I thought was outstanding and we were only without water and plumbing for maybe 8-10 hours which was absolutely fantastic. I would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: They replaced my water heater as it was leaking. Also replaced the broken drainage pipes.

Louis was punctual and polite. He explained what he was doing at each step and answered my questions with language I could understand. He checked every thing he could to find the problem so as to avoid replacing any parts that did not need to be replaced. He found the problem, advised as to how to avoid it in the future, gave lots of tips on maintenance and helped me set up a service contract so I wouldn't have to worry about finding someone to do work in the future. He was unhurried, very courteous and included me in the interaction as if I was a friend who had asked him to take a look at my furnace. He explained that the company allows him to take as much time as he needs to do each job to maximize customer satisfaction. All in all a good day to have the furnace fixed and a great service person to do it.
Description of Work: Louis checked the furnace and thermostat, trouble shooting to find out why there was no heat despite the blower turning on.

I called them because our furnace was cut off and not working. Our furnace came back on before they arrived. He told me that I needed a part for the furnace and that I would be contacted the next day, but he never got back with us. I had paid him $100 which he took with him even though he didn't do any work and never got back in contact with me. Even though I didn't need the service, he said that because he was at the door we had to pay him the service fee so he might as well look at the furnace.

Michael and Sons Service is a pretty big company. Their service was great, always on time and I had no complaints at all. The guys were great. I will absolutely use them again.

They showed up on time..but I'm not a fan. When your sitting with no heat and its freezing out side you want work done asap not a week from than...and they would not do weekends. Oh and there is nothing worst than not getting it right the first time under those conditions. Thanks god for space heaters.

My wife came into the house after work and the home was cold because apparently the HVAC heat stopped and our digital thermostat went down. She called Michael and Son after 5 pm and Todd, a serviceman who works in the Baltimore area came out later that evening as an emergency call around 9:30 pm. I was impressed considering he had a full day coming from another job in Columbia. First, Todd called us to notify that he was on his way and if it was OK to come. He also apologized for it being late at night--but we were happy he was coming over . He started with thermostat first and then determined the issue had to be with the HVAC unit. Seeing him work was great! He explained everything he was doing. He knows his stuff and is very competent. He was lighthearted and comical which is amazing for working so late! He found that the circuit breaker for the HVAC did not have the level of conductivity it needed. He fixed the circuit breaker, and tested the HVAC with sophisticated equipment and the heat came back! He also cleaned out the water in the tubes of the system and replaced our air filter upon request. He was very honest ("you don't have to change the air filter unless you want to"-- and we did) and just explained things and was comical! Todd is the best.. And Michael and Son did not charge because it was under warranty. I'm impressed that they did not charge for the service call because it was an emergency call (unscheduled). Even if he did charge, my experience with Michael and Son is that they charge less than the competitor for the initial visit.
Description of Work: Our HVAC system. which we bought 10 months ago, stopped working and our thermostat turned off. Michael and Son repaired the HVAC so the heat came back on.

Mike started applying heat to the pipes and told me I could use a hair dryer to help. I also found a space heater and set that up near the area. Mike had to cut a hole in the drywall to access the elbow of the pipe, but eventually it thawed and hot water was restored. Unfortunately, we found that the builder had not put any insulation between the outside wall and the pipes, which is something that will have to be addressed. Mike was very courteous and concerned with trying to resolve the situation without causing the pipes to burst. I told him I was a member of Angie's list and he immediately asked me to print the coupon so he could take 10% off the invoice. All in all, I was very pleased with the service I received and the price I paid. I would definitely use Michael and Sons services again.
Description of Work: When I started my shower in the morning, there was no hot water. After checking to make sure no circuits breakers were off, I thought the hot water heater was broken. I called Michael and Sons and a technician was scheduled between 10 am - 2 pm the same day. Mike Miller arrived about 10:30 and determined the hot water heater was not the culprit - we had a frozen pipe; as the temperature was -2 degrees this morning I shouldn't have been surprised.

We used their electrical services. Since the price was so reasonable we had them to install 2 additional lights in my laundry area. We were very pleased with the entire job. Also they charge by the job not by the hour which can make a big difference in cost for certain repairs. Would use them again.

I am exceedly happy with this company. I have used them for several months. They set the bar very high, and it would be extremely hard to find another company as professional as they are. They are also very neat, making sure to wear footies and put down a wiping mat. They also give estimates up front, with no surprises.
Description of Work: I had the inside parts of the toilet replaced, rather than buying new. They have also done lots of electrical work, as well.

My furnace would not fire and after trying every thing I could think of, I called Michael & Son. They got me an appointment the same day with no extra charge. As soon as the technician arrived, it became apparent to both of us that it was a simple wiring problem to the thermostat (the wire had been cut during a recent renovation). The technician hooked everything back up and now I have heat. They were timely, informative, and orderly. I will definitely use them again.

I have used Michael & Son once before with mixed feeling. This time I had a heating system failure and they were able to get me in in short notice. This is where things went correctly. The technician came and looked at my hot water heating system. After about 30 min. of poking and prodding, he tells me that there is an intermittent problem with a control unit (Aquastat). He tells me that if the wires are wiggled into a working state and not disturbed, it works fine. After moving the connectors on the board it will fail. So at this point the diagnostics seems reasonable. To the quote... he looked up the part and tells me that price to replace the Aquastat will be $1053.00. Yes, I was in shock. What this tech did not realize is that I have in the busyness, unfortunately in another state, and i know the price is why more than reasonable. I explain that I don't have the $$ to replace the unit. He tries to tell me that the small parts are often costly because of the computer parts. I am no fool and have been in the electronics field for years and know there are no computer chips on the board. Either the technician was an idiot, or he is told to lie to customers to justify the price. He then tells me that he can sell me a service plane for $400 per year that will cover all services and replacement of the part after just 30 days (so what if the heat goes out before then?). Again I say that is out of my budget knowing full well that contract will not cover pre-identified problems. After all this, he then tries to upsell me on bleeding the heating system for air for the bargain price, because he is already here, of $269! My system has two high point air bleeder fittings that you just let the air out (just like a bike tire, when the system is cold of course). I tell him, no thanks. I paid the $89 diagnostic fee and send the man on his way. I followed up on Amazon to see if the Aquastat was available. Sure enough it was and for a basement price of $180... yes $180. I ordered it immediately so that I can make the repair myself when the part arrives. The only thing this company is after is $$. I am ok with that as that is how our economy works. However, a 6x markup on parts is more than this person is willing to pay, I would suggest you stay away from this company.
