After seeing the deal on Angie's list I contacted Mike via email with some questions. He replied immediately answering my questions and later providing some photos of previous work. I arranged to meet with him, and we went over the basics of how the work would proceed, the warranty, etc. and I signed and paid the first 1/3rd of the cost via CC. He left me with a sample shingle board to choose a color (which still has not been picked up). I was under the impression he was going to get back to me to pick an install date but it took me initiating to find out he was waiting on me to get back to him with a shingle color (no biggie). The trailer was delivered and sat at the top of the driveway several days before the job, a little annoying and an eye sore but again, no biggie other than the trailer needs some repair to the gate and such - I wouldn't want to be driving down the road behind it. The crew showed up on the selected date promptly and got to work. This is where I have to say, the crew was great. Very polite and personable, worked hard, really seem to have the desire to do the job right. So after ripping up all the shingles there's a knock at the door - the decking is shot and needs to be replaced. The warranty will not be any good if it's not. Normally I would be skeptical and consider that a sales push, but having seen the decking from the inside and knowing the age I wasn't entirely shocked. I was however disappointed that this was brought up at the last minute with an additional $3,450 price tag (original quote being $6,500). In other words, take the extra 5 minutes when you're doing the estimate to shine a flashlight in the attic and be like, "hey I can't say for sure until we peel the top off, but you might need to replace this and it will cost $" so it's not a total surprise the day of. They took a check for the cost of this (good thing I could cover it!), ran to the big box store and grabbed some OSB and got back to work. Long story short they knocked it out fairly quickly considering they replaced everything and they made sure to keep the plastic attic vents/baffles in place, which was something I was concerned about given I had just blown a bunch of insulation up there (horrible job in a smallish attic, pay someone to do it). The trailer was there for another day or two before being picked up. So far, no leaks! =) The final payment was a bit of an irritation. First they asked for a check, and I said I would rather use a CC. They had to call Mike, he told them the CC machine wasn't working, please get a check. I ended up calling him back and he asked "can't you cover it?" to which I replied, I just wrote a check for $3,450 for the decking so things are kinda tight right now. The answer was an explanation about the CC machine being down, to which I replied "can't you take down the info and charge it later?" Long story short he took the CC in the end and got it charged that day I think, but 1) I shouldn't have to go back and forth about it2) if your paperwork says "We Accept All Major Credit Cards" then I expect you to take all major cc's without asking for checks. I also found that I was overcharged several hundred in the end and had to do some more back and forth to get it straightened out, and was not pleased to at one point, hear "can you give me your cc information again, I've misplaced it." Just to clarify, I think it was an honest mistake but not one I should have to catch. He apologized profusely for this. Also found out after the fact that there is supposed to be a warranty mailed to me from GAF, which I'm still looking forward to receiving (hint hint). So here's my summary.PROS - I think Mike strives to do the job right, and from my conversations with the foreman (?) Mike keeps on them to make sure it get's done right. I think he's a good honest guy as is the crew - they bust their behinds and I wouldn't wish that job on anyone in the summer. - Very polite and personable crew - I really can't say enough about them! - Did a good job, even to the point of sealing up a bad siding joint (which I knew was there but really appreciated that they did it). - Price was reasonable. - He followed up to make sure they did a good job. - Emails are generally followed up on that day, if not sooner. CONS - Communication is sometimes erratic and hard to follow (looks like some of this could be due to cell phone emails). - A discussion about things like replacing the decking and the repercussions of not (as well as cost) really need to happen. - The trailer - not a big deal, but a little irritating. A couple days I understand, but a week? Not so much. - The whole credit card debacle and constantly requesting checks. - Supplies were dropped on the roof so hard I had several nail pops and cracks in the ceiling and joint compound raining down - not a big deal as I'm good at fixing that sort of thing, but annoying. ADVICE- Get an administrative assistant. Yeah I know it cuts into the profit margin, but it avoids a whole lot of grief for you and your customers. Let them handle the CC processing, correspondence (when appropriate), fix your emails to appear more professional, address GAF warranties, and so on. Would probably make both parties happier.- Remember when talking to customers that while this is second nature to you, we probably don't know that much about it and a little more detail and explanation are probably appreciated. I know it can be easy to forget when you do it day in/day out.
Description of Work: The roof was due to be replaced - this is on a split foyer 2 level SFH with a one car garage. I've been here for almost 12 years and have patched it up a couple of times due to storm damage, as well as noticing various soft spots when walking on it. The crew showed up on the scheduled date and got started right away. They removed and replaced the shingles, the decking, flashing, gutter guards and pipe boots. Afterward new boots and flashing were put in place as well as sealing up around the chimney and even sealing a bad siding joint (not overlapped, just butted together). Shingles look great and the roof ridge vent is helping with the summer heat. Cleanup was excellent, nothing was damaged (e.g. plants), crew was excellent and fast.

He came to the house and I said before he came out that I wanted to see proof he was bonded, insured, and licensed. He grabbed the contract out of my hand, ripped it up told me he had had it with me and walked out to his truck. I would say he was kind of threatening. The contract was for $14,500.

we have been dealing with this member for over 3 months emailing back and forth phone calls finally the first time I met he said that he wanted to sign the contract this member with us to do the work when we came out and showed him and his wife samples and after he received the estimate he was very skeptical and scared to sign up with this we explained to him why he was giving him a very good price hey did not believe us I asked him what can we do to get his business he said that he needed to do more research he also asked me for references and if I done any work around the fairfax area I explained to him I was new to the area and just starting and that particular area we are based out of columbia maryland when I said how many references would you like his reply was at least 10 after he told me that I figured he was not really interested in doing anything then 3 months later he calls me and asked if I could schedule his job for a week out and he would like to have it done on a friday today's date is 7/20/12 I explained to him that she signed up today and give me a deposit I could do this for him he told me he could not give me a check he wants to use a credit card I said fine I have the machine I'll come over to see you and will get things signed up I was on my way to his house from another job site 25 miles over there he never told me before I came over that he wanted more information about my business this statement if a contractor sees it I say contractor beware this member is going to be a nightmare and I figured it out and at the special discount prices that we offered and he was being that skeptical and scared to sign a contract that I would have to give him more information when he could have saved me a trip over there to his house and told me thi.s ove the phone before I even came out if he was really interested in doing the job he would not have been playing mind games so after I arrive for the second time and he wanted more information I decided it was time to move on because what would happen if I started doing the job and is acting crazy like this we are a highly rated company I've been doing roofing for 32 years certified licensed bonded and insured and I am very sure that he looked into that before he had me come out the only reason why he called me back was the price because after he got the other estimates then he know that I was telling the truth I don't understand why there's people like this that like to play games with contractors we are a serious company we don't have time to play games if someone's interested in getting a job done at a fair price we can do it I wish that angie would set up a list for contractors call it bob's list where contractors can go to interview potential customers and see feedback from other contractors my feedback on this member would be all f f f f f f f f that would be this members rating for this company is experience the total nightmare waste time gas a professional time waster the only thing you can do for this person is pray for him it takes a lot of people to make a world but I have to say in my 32 years experience in dealing with people I never seen a person that was so scared of getting screwed I hope he can find a contractor that is able to take care of his needs but what's going to happen is he is going to pay about 25 to 30,000 dollars I am very sorry I should have known the first time when I came out to the property and he asked me for 10 references I should have took the chance to drive back again but anyone reviewing this they can have the all the pages of happiness all the feedback from normal people good people that appreciates a hard working contractor that would go the extra mile for his customer

We were looking for a new reliable gutter cleaning and maintenance company and found Kelbie through Angie’s. We initially tried then by purchasing an Angie’s Big Deal but decided to hire them back for future work based on their performance and customer service. Mike Kelbie and the rest of the Kelbie team have more than exceeded our expectations. We have had them out to our townhouse to perform two seasonal gutter cleaning and inspections over the past year. Mike and his team were extremely accommodating with scheduling appointments and when they come to perform the work they pictures of the house and the work performed and emailing them with a brief summary resulting from the job once it was completed to allow for work to be performed without having to be home. All work was performed as requested and performed to a level above expectation. They were even available and welcomed any follow-up questions that we had. We will certainly consider using their services when we have future work.

Overall, the experience was wonderful! I was referred to Mike Kelbie by a co-worker. I called him and he initially used computer software to calculate the SF of our roof. Then he emailed me a quote with everything that they would supply. He then came out that same week to take a physical look at our roof and give us a firm estimate and to sign the contract. We had a minor delay in getting our roof installed due to a rainy spring season but as soon as the weather cleared up, Kelbie was out to install our new roof. We are extremely happy with the result. We are talking to Kelbie Home Improvement about refinishing our siding and installing new gutters. I would totally recommend Mike Kelbie and his company for their services.
Description of Work: Mike Kelbie and his crew replaced our entire roof, including some rotten boards under the shingles. They installed all GAF products, a Timbertech ridge cap, Cobra ridge vent, all new pipe collars and ProStart starter strips. They also completely waterproofed our chimney and installed new flashing around the chimney. Everything has a lifetime warranty.

At first the job was ok. The new roof worked well. Job was done quickly. However, things changed come summer time. When we turned on our A/C for the first time, we had major water coming through our ceiling. When we called an HVAC person to look at it, turns out the roofers had smashed the line that is supposed to drain the unit. As a result, the water backed up and leaked out into our attic, and through our ceiling, causing major stains, and hopefully not worse damage. When I brought this up to Kelbie, he basically told me to go f*** myself and read the contract. Ok, it's in the contract. Doesn't change the fact that I'm out extra money for damage caused by Kelbie and his team.

Due to the heavy snows and ice our roof took a beating and was in need of repair. We have a large house with a large roof so we knew we needed someone that we could feel confident could do the job. We heard from many - "thats a big roof" which was an indication they were not use to dealing with larger jobs. We received numerous bids. However, if became clear that some companies were just providing estimates without any real thought process. Mike Kelbie was different, he first needed to go on the roof to inspect and investigate (surprised at companies that did not even go on the roof). We also had all of the gutters replaced with new oversize gutters and downspouts with gutter guards. Hard rains are not a problem any more. During the roof replacement Kelbie's crew identified areas that needed repair and suggested we contact our insurance company as it was clear some of the damage was related to recent storms. Our insurance company, based on Kelbie's analysis stepped up to cover some of the roof. We also had the house pressure washed which helped make everything look great! It was too late in the fall to get the house washed so Kelbie said they would come back in the spring. My first reaction was - yeah, sure. Spring time came, I sent an email to Kelbie and he commited to a day to send a crew to pressure wash and they showed and completed the task. We are happy with the new roof, gutters and the pressure washing. I have already recommended Kelbie to others.

We purchased the service September 7. We called early October to schedule the appointment and were told the earliest they could arrive was Saturday November 12 between 9am - 11am, so we booked that date. On November 12 at 11:30am, we called Kelbie to ask if anyone was going to come today. The gentleman who answered the phone was very nice, apologized that no one had shown up at our house yet and said he would have someone call us. The man who called us back was rude did not apologize and gave me the technician's name and telephone number and TOLD ME TO CALL HIM AND FIND OUT WHEN HE WOULD BE AT MY HOUSE! I was unaware that I had been hired as Kelbie's scheduler; with other companies when their technician is late, they call their technician and tell me when he will be there. I called there technician at noon and he PROMISED he would be at my house in a hour. At 1pm, we called Angie's List to see if we could get a refund if Kelbie did not show up. At 2pm, Ray showed up with NO APOLOGY for being THREE HOURS LATE from original appointment time and one hour from his last promised arrival time! He got on the roof walked around did the maintenance work promised. He came back to the door and showed us digital pictures of our roof and digital pictures of another person's roof (occasionally he caught the mistake), told us we needed a new roof and gave us an estimate. We thanked him for the estimate, said we would be contacting other contractors for estimates and we would be in touch. Ray and his crew sat in their truck at the foot of our driveway for over 15 minutes, we went outside and asked them to leave. We would NEVER have them do any work on our home.
Description of Work: We ourchased the roof maintenance package via Angie's List from Kelbie Home Improvement. Description from the promo:One of our roofing specialists will come to your home and inspect your roof. We will take digital photos of any of your vital exterior structures that are in need of work. The inspection will include the regular maintenance of resealing pipe collars, caulk exposed nail heads, inspect and reseal caulking around chimney flashing and exhaust fans if needed, inspect wall flashings, re-caulk flashing at corners of walls as needed. Any other areas that are in need of maintenance will be brought to the homeowners attention and a professional plan of action presented.

Bought Pressure washing services from Angie's List Big Deal. Was hard to schedule an appointment - it took two calls before I got a response. Day of appointment it was raining. When I contacted the company to see if they would be coming out, I was told they would be unless I heard back. They didn't come and I never heard back that day. Company came the next day, so we were unprepared. The deal only covered part of the house and the estimate to finish the house was more expensive than the initial work, so we declined it. The parts of the house that were pressure washed looked good, but communication was difficult and resulted in a less-than-good experience.

I called one month in advance to schedule the roof maintenance, so that I could be home. Mr. Kelbie and I spoke directly, and made the appointment. One week before the scheduled appointment, I called him to reconfirm -- I was assured that they would be there. Naturally, I took the day off work to be home for the inspection, so that I could be briefed on anything amiss with the roof. The day of the appointment, nobody showed up. I called at 12PM, when they were officially late, and was told "Oh sorry, we didn't call you, but our truck broke down, and my child is sick. I'll call you by the end of the day to reschedule." The rescheduling call never came. Instead, the crew showed up around 4:45PM on Monday afternoon, unannounced, to complete the job. Luckily I was home to talk with the crew, who assured me that Mr. Kelbie would call me to discuss their findings. I specifically asked for attention to my chimney, which has a known issue that I need to repair. The team (3 men) did not walk around the perimeter of the house, did not use a caulk gun on the roof, and after hammering a few popped nails, disappeared -- the service lasted less than 10 minutes. The only other tools I saw besides the hammers were a camera and a large measuring tape, which was used to prepare an estimate for a new roof. Sadly, Mr. Kelbie never called to discuss my roof. Instead I received the following message, presumably from his iPhone: "sorry for the delay getting back to you but we've been really busy lately trying to get a truck back on the road we made it out there yesterday and out of service I will be sending you some photographs later on today it looks like you could use a new roof are you interested in upgrading your roof this time would you like a free estimate " I sent Mr. Kelbie another message describing my disappointment with the lack of services and professionalism. His response follows: "so I guess you are unhappy with the service do you want me to send them back out again and do some more caulking for you and spend some more time out there it doesn't take long to do the service we took pictures of the roof and looks like the roof needs an upgrade if you was interested I can give you a lifetime roof for half price lifetime warranty on labor and material please give me a call directly and talk to me if you have any other questions 410-808-9380 if you feel that I know if I'm not enough work was done up there for your 149 dollar maintenance package then give me a call and I'll reschedule another appointment and I'll come out there myself personally and take care of it ....we have four men out there doing the maintenance package on your roof ...." I spoke directly with Mr. Kelbie by phone after this email. I did not call Mr. Kelbie back to the house; however, I did ask for my "free estimate", as well as pictures and measurements of my roof. In addition, I asked for a repair quote for known deficiencies. The quote came by email. It was accompanied by an inspection report that had been prepared by a 3rd party agency, including satellite images of my roof. The report included the general layout of the roof sections; but lacked any form of measurement. The quote also made no mention of the number of squares, square footage, etc. The quote provided seemed fairly priced, but based on my experiences with the company, I'm not willing to take the chance that Mr. Kelbie will do right by me on the third try. At this point, I feel like the Angie's List coupon was a waste of time and money. I have no confidence that my roof has been sufficiently inspected, and I have no interest in working with Mr. Kelbie again.

We could not make the first appointment as we had problems with are truck. Once the truck was repaired, we were immediately back on track. Four men arrived to the members home to do the service. The service was done professionally, pictures were taken, we measured the roof, sent pictures by email, explained what would need it to be done. We also send him photos, measurements and diagrams of the roof from Eagle View that was done at the company's expense. We were willing to go back out and do more work for the same price, the owner of the company was willing to go out there himself and over see it. The service we provided for $149 dollars was a very good service. He received photos of the roof, a full inspection of the roof, a free estimate in writing sent by email. Also the vent pipes were sealed, the flashing was sealed.

We bought a coupon from Angie’s List for the service and I was not satisfied with the service that I received from them in any way, shape or form. I have an email from him, his name is Mike Kelbie. They were less than prompt and less than forthcoming on what the costs would be. The service exceeded the amount of money that the coupon was for. I was not asked before they did the service which was a request to do more than what I had paid for. I had asked them to please speak to me before they finished the job, which they did not. I was very disappointed with the service they provided. There were a million excuses for why it happened and I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. I had emailed them and they responded and I actually spoke to him over the phone. When I first sent them an email, they responded asking for my address, which I did and I did not hear from them at all. I did send them a follow up email and then the owner of the company did call me back and set up an appointment. They were supposed to come up on the 12th, they didn’t show up or no phone call or no follow up. I then sent them another email and asked them why the appointment was never made, but nobody ever called or followed up. He then told me that he could not find it anywhere on his book and did not remember making the appointment. I spoke directly to him and told him that I had spoken over the phone to him and sent him 3 emails and he had told me that he was overwhelmed. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. When they finally sent somebody out, I was very clear and asked them to please talk to me before they finished the job. They just did it and I just paid them and I was done. I ended up paying twice the amount of what the pressure washing was for. The cost of the coupon was $198 and but by the gentleman had finished, it cost me another $189 to finish my house and my house isn’t that big. They did the job and they did a decent job, so I am not going to complain about that. When they finally acknowledged that they did have an appointment, they did show up when they were supposed to. He was apologetic. I hate to throw this guy under the bus, but overall my experience was horrific. This guy may have just had a really bad month or whatever the case may have been, but I will just make sure that I really look at all of the reviews of each company on Angie’s List before I use those services. I did not have a professional experience with them whatsoever. I would never use them again.
Description of Work: I used the services of Kelbie Home Improvement for a power wash service. This was for the exterior of my home and it was about 300 sq.ft.

This job was conducted with an Angie’s List Big Deal to clean 3000 sq ft. Overall, the house looks good after the clean but we were not happy with other aspects of the service. The scheduling was the first issue: We scheduled a time. Then, the company called to cancel the cleaning for that afternoon. We planned to rescheduled for the following week. Fine. Then, they showed up on the following day without notice. To be awoken Saturday morning by the sound of a ladder being put up against the side of the house was a shock and forced me to change my plans for that day. I understand from my conversation with them that they had a huge backlog of work but turning up like that at their convenience is just not inappropriate. Secondly, having some forewarning would have allowed me some time to move items away from the house and protect things properly. The crew did help me move some things from the front porch to the lawn but even so the sofa got sprayed with water and there are bleach stains on the coverings. I did not realize the team would also clean the enclosed back porch and came out to find that everything we store there soaked - leather shoes, garden equipment, barbeque etc. I wish the crew could have walked around the house with me beforehand to make it clear what would happen so I could take the necessary precautions. Lastly, there was an additional cost that was not handled well. We were told only after a third of the house has been cleaned that it was going to cost over $500 more to do the whole thing - over twice as much as the initial coupon value – which is not acceptable. A proper quote should have been provided before the work was started. The company did offer the option to just wash the area covered by the coupon deal but of course we wanted the whole house washed - and that's what we thought the deal would cover. To be honest if we had known this service was going to cost over $700 we would not have gone ahead. We had received an earlier quote for $200 from a contractor who has done good work for us in the past so we would likely have given him the business. This company’s calculation of the sq footage was a sham to recoup their Angie’s List offer as was the way they handled the quote and the appointment. I hope they will take this feedback on board to improve service in future.

It took a bit to get a hold of them just because I dont have a phone at work, but when I did get a hold of him, he was able to get me in the next day. They didn't need me at home which was really helpful, and they took plenty of pictures. My roof is 20 years old, so I know that i am going to need a roof soon, so I wasnt surprised when he recommended a new one for me. But I was able to look at the pictures and see it for myself. I dont think that he was trying to oversell me on anything, as a new roof is definitely something that I will need in the near future. I would have no problem using them in the future. He also threw in a free gutter cleaning. That was a nice and unexpected perk!

Mike was very responsive after I purchased an Angie's List coupon offer for gutter cleaning. He sent a crew out the next day and spoke with me twice via phone during their visit, as I couldn't be present at the time. He sent me photos to show me what they saw and were cleaning/recommending. The coupon price was a huge bargain given the work they did. He is also going to send me an estimate for other work repairing some slates and possibly painting of two areas of metal roofing and for considering other gutter replacements, all of which we will seriously consider. He was easy to talk with and seemed very professional.

I appreciated their being able to provide the service with late notice, and their professionalism. They also reviewed my roof shingles (which I know need to be replaced), provided me with a reasonable estimate (I know, as I've been looking), and did not give me the "hard sell". I appreciated the service they provided and will call them in the future should I have a need.
Description of Work: The staff came out to my house to pressure wash the front and back of our townhome a week in advance of a wedding. They were prompt, professional, moved patio furniture out of the way prior to washing and returned it after washing, and kept to the original estimate they provided.

I was told my roof was totaled and needed to be replaced. The proprietor offered a very attractive price to replace the roof installing shingles with a lifetime warranty (labor not included). I contacted Douglas Roofing, the original installer of the roof, and they said I had another 10 years on the roof. I am holding off doing any work on it.
Description of Work: I paid for the roof inspection package which basically would have given me a detailed analysis of the state of my roof.

We knew we needed to replace the roof on our mid-1970's split-level house sometime in the coming year, so when we spotted the "Big Deal" on Angie's List for the service, we signed up. This seemed to be a family-owned and operated company, which appealed to us. Mike Kelbie came out to the house to give us a detailed estimate, which was a bit more than the "Big Deal" price based on the larger square footage of our roof, but we had expected as much. The price quoted was fair and we were impressed with Mike's professionalism and knowledge. Since his team would be working on the roof already, we also added on repair and/or replacement of some major trim pieces across the front of the house, new shutters for the entire house, and a good pressure washing when they were done. All in all, we were very satisfied with the work. Mike and his team were responsive, professional, and communicated well throughout the project. While replacing a roof will generate considerable amounts of trash and debris, the team was conscientious in cleaning up as much as possible each day. At the end of the project, they did a pretty thorough cleaning to ensure that roofing nails and any visible pieces of old shingles were picked up. Over a month has passed, and we've not had one flat tire yet, so the team must have done a good job! We will definitely be calling Mike and his team the next time we need a project done at the house. We'd recommend them highly to others who are considering similar work on their homes.
Description of Work: Removed old roof, replaced it with new architectural shingles. Repaired and/or replaced major pieces of trim work on front of house. Replaced all shutters on the house. Pressure washed the house.

After purchasing this deal I called and spoke to Mike Kelbie. He was easy to communicate with and much of our communication was via email. He asked for some pictures of my deck and approximate measurements. We scheduled a time for them to come out to do the work. They were supposed to show up between 8 and 11. That morning, I heard nothing from them. I emailed Mike on my way to work to ask if something had come up. I get a call about 20 minutes later saying they were on their way. Once I heard from Mike they were there and on time. Just a bit of an inconvenience when I was only planning on missing half a day of work. The guys who did the work were great and efficient. They only came through my house once to get to the deck, the rest of the time they went up from a ladder in my backyard, so they wouldn't track anything inside. They reinforced everything on my deck and pressure washed the entire thing in that afternoon. Due to rain that evening and the deck not being dry they would have to come back another day to do the sealing. I contacted Mike a few days later to to arrange to have them come back out to finish the work. He insured me that I wouldn't need to be home for them to do the sealing and that it would get done within a week or so. I came home one night and the work was done. Everything went great. The pricing for the deal plus extra square footage was reasonable and they didn't charge for reinforcing the wood.
Description of Work: I purchased a deal from Angies List for Kelbie Home Improvement for a deck cleaning and staining. Kelbie's was great. I sent him via email pictures of my deck, which is rooftop, and explained some additional repairs that might need to be done. They came out and went around the deck and nailed in some pieces that were loose or falling off. They did the pressure washing, which made a huge difference and on a separate day sealed the deck.

I bought a coupon with them but had to call 3 times to get anyone to schedule the work. The day before I called to confirm they were coming and the guy didn't know anything about the appointment. He realized later he'd put me down on the wrong date, but he showed up the next day. He was supposed to powerwash the house. He called me to tell me his guys had just about finished the roof inspection (what?), so I had to tell him (again) he was supposed to be powerwashing the house. He stopped the guys but said I'd received a "free" roof inspection and that he would send me the pictures (which I never got). The coupon to wash the house was $250 but he charged me more he said because of the size of the house. I asked a painter to estimate the square footage and he said it was nowhere near as much as the powerwash guy charged me for. This guy is unprofessional. Stay away from him!!!
