+ -1 moreThe owner (George) returned my call promptly and he went to inspect the condition of the roof the next day, which really helped us since our contract to buy the house had an approaching deadline to complete the inspections and there was more snow in the forecast. George got back in touch promptly and provided his recommendations. He was courteous and extremely knowledgeable. It gave us some peace of mind going into closing to know that the roof was in decent condition. We have not had any work done on the roof yet, but we can apply the cost of the inspection to the repairs.

+ 0 moreWe looked for a roofer and got multiple estimates for many, many months. Prices ranged from a low of $8K to an absurdly high $26K. Our neighbors had some repair work done by GEM, and we decided to get an estimate from them. George is very knowledgable, finding similar issues with the other roofers we had out. He provided a well-priced estimate immediately, and we decided to go with him. He called a few days later and said they would be by "sooner rather than later" then called the next day and they came out a couple days after that. They did the whole roof on one warm, sunny February day. They returned two days later to do the gutters, and it was all done. Very clean, very nice install, and a thorough cleanup. Well-crafted flashing, for example bent into the chimney mortar.
Description of Work: Full tear-off of two layers of roofing, replace one panel of sheeting, replace two gutters, install automatic attic fan. Approximately 12 squares of architectural asphalt shingles.

Description of Work: Met the owner at the Roofing Center and expressed interest in an estimate for a complete new roof. After calling him 3 times, leaving a message each time, he finally returned the calls after 4 weeks. Made an appointment for him to come to the house for an estimate on full house new roof. He called to verify and then did not show up. Did not call. No explanation and I have not heard from him since.

+ -1 moreI had a particularly elusive leak in my slate roof. George Miles was the third in a set of roofers I had contracted to correct the leak. George took the initiative to work with me and come to my house when it was raining and get in the attic to pinpoint the specific location of the leak. He then made the appropriate repairs that, with a few rain events since, has not reappeared. George can be a little difficult to contact but he is very professional, does excellent work, and is reasonably priced. I will continue to have him do preventive and corrective work on my slate roof.

+ 0 moreGeorge does great work, and prices are reasonable. Unfortunately, George has taken on more customers than he can service in a timely manner. He has recently not returned phone calls. I am disappointed that l will need to use another roofer. However, his unresponsiveness has reached an unacceptable level. I would used George again if/when he becomes more responsive.

+ 0 moreRoofers who really know how to work on slate are hard to come by, and George is an absolute catch. His work is great. The first time, George came when he said he would, did the work efficiently and pleasantly, did a good job with the slate, the gutters worked great, and he cleaned up nicely. The prices were reasonable. Same thing with the second time. The only reason I marked "good" on punctuality is not that he didn't show up on time, but that both times I called for a week or so before I could get him to call back. I believe he was out of town, so maybe that explains it, but it did happen twice. It was not a serious problem, but it could have been if we'd had a serious leak.
Description of Work: G.E.M Slate has worked for us two times, once about Oct. 2009 and the time listed above, about July 14, 2010. The first time he repaired slates on our slate roof, which is supposed to last 50 years and is doing well at 66. He also removed our old round copper gutters and installed new ones the same color but not copper. (The price above is for the second repair--see below.) The second work was after the Big Baltimore Snow Storms. In the course of two weeks, two separate blizzards dropped about 20 inches of snow EACH on Baltimore and on our roof. The snow on the roof melted and then refroze when it got the the edges of the eaves of the house. It rested on the new gutters and knocked two of the three out of level and completely twisted one upside down. GEM Slate repaired, reinstalled, replaced the appropriate gutters and replaced some slates that were also damaged by the storm.

Description of Work: I sent out an email to our community for a recommendation for Slate roofing companies used in the neighborhood. Four people recommended GEM Slate . . . someone got from Angie's list . . . I called GEM Slate . . .George called me back a week later. We setup a time for him and I to review the roof together. He was knowledgeable and through ( I did some slate roofing in my 20s). . . I was impressed. The six other slate roofing companies I called sent out salesmen that suggested things that were unneccessary. After finishing the review he wrote up a contract. . .the price was fair. I asked for a proof of insurance and contractor license. That when things got strange. He said would get them for me(pointing to his truck) and just left. I contacted the four people that recommended him and they all said they never asked him for proof of insurance or a contractor license. I don't need to sued by one of his workers for falling off my roof. Three weeks later I found a copy of a business license stuck on my screen from George and still never received proof of insurance. So I decided to do brush off my slate skills and do the work my self.

+ -1 moreThe project went very well. The GEM Slate team arrived on the property on the date arranged and brought the required materials. They were very courteous and got right to work. They explained what they were going to do thoroughly. The end of the day came before they completed and they agreed to finish the work the following day. The team did return the following day to complete the work. They cleaned up after themselves and from the ground it looked like the work was well performed. My only concern that led to a B+ on quality was the speed with which they worked. While speed does not necessarily impact quality, they were only on the property about 3 hours to complete 50 slate replacements, re-cementing, and the gutter work. Even with a crew of 3 people, that seemed very quick. I have not had enough rain to speak to the effectiveness of the work, but I do worry somewhat when things are done so quickly. Otherwise, they were outstanding and I would recommend them highly. They even offered to replace my soffit light bulbs that had burned out. I do plan to call on them again.
Description of Work: We contacted GEM Slate as one of several companies to give us an estimate on replacing a number of missing and broken slates on our roof. GEM Slate was very responsive and provided a quote that detailed the specifics of the work they were going to complete on the roof. The estimate included replacement of broken slates, repairs and cleaning out the gutters that were in poor condition. We selected GEM Slate based on their willingness to address all the issues on the roof and their ability to schedule the work quickly.

+ -1 moreRecently purchased the house that has a nearly 70 year old slate roof, which developed a leak shortly after the move in. Although the house was "inspected" before the purchase, George, the owner of Gem, felt that the inspector missed the condition of the roof. I called several of the roofing companies listed on Angie's 2 days before the hurricane was due to hit. George responded within about 15 minutes and was able to inspect the roof within about 3 hours of my call. He agreed that it needed to be fixed before the storm and made arrangements to do the work the next day. The work was performed as scheduled and although we thought we did have a leak in the bathroom (which George inspected the next day) it turned out to be a leak from under the sink, and in fact, we had no leaks during the very heavy rain. While I did not have the opportunity to "shop" the price, it seemed reasonable, but more importantly, it was done correctly. George now has us on a 6 month inspection cycle to look over the roof and make any necessary repairs, as well as clean the gutters, so that we can maximize the life span of the existing roof.
Description of Work: Replaced 50 damaged slates, cleaned and re-spiked gutters.

+ 1 moreThis company was not chosen. I was impressed with the estimate but we went with another company. Our neighbor saw this company at our home and had her roof repaired by them. Her roof looks great. The company was fast, efficient and removed the debris. When they gave us the estimate, they were right on schedule and gave us the estimate even though it was raining that day.
Description of Work: The company was to replace 22 slate, caulk all ridges and chimney flashings, clean all gutters and draws and remove debris. Estimate $750.

+ -1 moreGeorge is great. He came out to inspect and gave an estimate free of charge on work that had been done poorly by another roofer. He also agreed to take pictures of the roof before, during and after repairs to help me with my complaint resolution process. He is fair and a great person to work with. I would highly recommend him. He will honestly tell you if a repair is possible or if a new roof is needed. A quality that is hard to find in a roofer.
Description of Work: Screened front of the house with heavy duty screens (23 ft.). Removed old wood and replaced slate, had to put in six new slates. Removed all slates needed to fix bad wood in the rear of the house. Put back in slate that could be re-used. Sistered joice that was rotten.
