AJ Michaels

We hired AJ Michaels to do our yearly service to our steam boiler, they came out on a Wednesday and performed the annual maintenance. Friday, no heat! They sent another tech out on Sunday to tell us that the return lines were blocked, thus hindering the performance of our unit. The following Saturday, thus far,a week with no heat in January, to give us an estimate on replacing the blocked return pipe with new copper pipe. We get an estimate for the job, $8,400 dollars, WOW first RED FLAG! The pipe they are replacing is roughly 50 feet of exposed pipe in our basement, so the estimate seemed ridiculously high, so we asked for a description of the work being done (hours of labor, price of materials) and we were told that AJ Michaels DOES NOT provide a itemized report of services provided, BAM! SECOND RED FLAG!! Any professional service provider should provide a detailed itemization of what services you are paying for, and as a consumer, you should ask for that so you know what you are paying for. I emailed the estimator and questioned the excessive price tag (after doing a simple google search to find out that we can get a brand new unit installed for roughly 10k) his response that it was going to take 3 days to complete the job. I am by no means a professional in the HVAC industry, but taking 3 days to remove and reinstall 50 ft of exposed pipe seemed outrageous, so I asked if they could do any better with the price. He came back with 2 days of labor, instead of three, and drop the hourly wage from $200 an hour to $190 an hr, taking us down from $8,400 to $5,200, BAM!!! THIRD RED FLAG!!! Why did he not give us the $3,200 break the first time? I believe it was because he knew we did not have heat, and we had to have the work done! AJ Michaels was taking advantage of our situation in a time of need. We have since received a detailed written estimate from another company (40ft of 1 1/4 inch pipe, 6 elbows, 2 tees, 2 unions and 4 to 5 hrs of labor) ready for this...$2,500. You decide if you want to use AL Michaels in the future, but if you do, I strongly recommend that you get a detailed estimate if materials and projected labor costs and don't allow them to price gouge you like they tried to do to me. I, personally would look into another company that is about taking care of their customers and not padding their pocket!

Rescheduled service twice with no notice. Each reschedule included a 4-week lead time. Terrible quality, will NEVER attempt to work with them again. No idea if their service is good or not, since they refuse to show up for a job. Might be because they only have one tech who works on boilers.

Omg they were excellent on time and very professional very neat left no mess ! The bomb I love the work Rick n Gavin did !! I would recommend them to anyone ! The were over the top excellent!! Thx so much

I have been dealing with them for 5 years already, they installed my furnace and they have been coming back for a regual check and maintenance 2x a year, I am fully satisfied with their service.

Danny diagnosed quickly and found the capacitor wasn't functioning in our heat pump,; hence, why the A/C was not working for our second floor unit. He originally said it was a $225 part but unfortunately discovered it was $325....didn't like that but Danny was very professional and thorough with his work. I asked him many questions; and he answered all of them. I would highly recommend AJ Michaels, and especially would recommend Danny to troubleshoot any problems you have. He was efficient, knowledgeable, and very competent!

Service was beyond prompt! Chris Darr came out almost immediately to do our estimate. He was thorough, and listened to our concerns. Beyond that, he was kind, personable, and very easy to talk to! The service ended up being sooner than we'd expected - which was great! The two men that came to perform our needed work were also exceptionally friendly. Those two went above and beyond to get our washer/dryer to code and hooked up. I hope this review is relayed to all involved with our job. I cannot say enough good things! Thank you!! There were a few hiccups (not their fault - our home wasn't built for newer washer/dryers) - they remedied quickly and were able to perform the job requested!

Not well. We never received our rebate because we were waiting on some type of customer service. We were told we would maybe get a gift card, no show. I have had many repairs and upgrades to my home and I have never had this type of response. Buyer beware.

They were able to get an estimator to me the same day I called, repair was put on their schedule right away. Plumbers arrived on time, completed the repair/replacement the same day.

Not well. The guy that gave the estimate did not look at the current covers and did not go into the attic to determine if there was enough tubing to make a connection for a new location. The price was too much to move the outlet so I ordered the plate covers only. The guy ordered the wrong vent covers which wasted my time and the workers". Another week or two went by and the right covers were installed The workers did a nice job and cleaned the ceilings (not the floors).

I just knew about them; I don't know how. Then, I contacted them. I liked the guy who came out. We just had a really good chat. He was very kind too.

performed work which part of which was covered by warranty. had to come back after ordering a part. follow up work also done until properly fixed. one negative was having to pay for follow up service calls.

I wouldn't even give this company one star. If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to run in the other direction. Seriously, use anyone other than this HORRIBLE COMPANY. We were given terrible advice by an A.J Michaels contractor, who told us not to put a filter in our HVAC unit, which resulted in hundreds of dollars in extra work. He wrote on the ticket that he told us to replace the filter ourselves, but what he actually told my husband was to leave the filter out because it was causing it to blow warm air. We were not aware that this was horrible advice until our HVAC system stated acting funny again and a reputable contractor told us it was because there was no filter. When I called to tell AJ Michaels that one of their contractors was giving out horrible advice, I spoke with an incredibly rude and hostile man who happens to be the president Jim Blake. I was literally dumbfounded as he proceeded to yell over me, blaming my husband for the issue, saying we were told to replace the filter ourselves, and asking me why I paid for the service in the first place. To be honest, I didn't expect AJ Michaels to cover the repair cost because no company wants to admit that they were called to fix something and made it worse. What shocked me was that the president Jim Blake spoke to me the way he did and accused my husband of lying about what a contractor told him. I'm literally dumbfounded by the way he treats customers. I will NEVER use this company again and after speaking with several other reputable HVAC companies, I've learned that AJ Michaels already has a terrible reputation in the business. Save yourself some time and money, call someone else.

They did a great job on the new furnace. They did an excellent job however, they had to contract a chimney company to put in the chimney liner, and a cap on the top of the chimney, and I thought we had talked about that prior to the contract, but when it came down time to do it, the company that they had contracted came to install the chimney liner, and the cap, but they did not want to fix the brick work that I wanted included in the deal. I mean, I was willing to pay the extra money, but they just had no plans on doing it. So, I just told them to stop, and they found another company. They did an awful job of the brick work, and AJ Michaels was no help. They just wanted their money. They didn't help me negotiate with this guy at all, and he did an awful job. The cost included the chimney work. I’d give the guy who installed the furnace an A, but when it came to people they sub contracted with they just didn’t negotiate for me. They just didn’t stand behind their word, and it just ended up costing me an extra $1,000, and the work he did, he wanted $2,000, but I told him I wasn’t paying it. I live in a townhouse, and my chimney is connected to my neighbors, and he wanted to do the whole thing. I knew my neighbor wasn’t going to pay, so he did my half, which I did agree to. The company that was sub contracted with AJ Michaels, and he used the existing brick, but I didn’t know the bricks were all broken up, and he wasn’t going to get the old mortar off. He just stuck them up there any kind of way. It looked a mess, and I wasn’t happy with them, and I called them back. Finally, their owner came out, and he said he didn’t see anything wrong with it. So, after that I said well, if he doesn’t see anything wrong with it, then I’m fighting a hopeless battle. I thought they would to come in, supposed to come in and recommend to you what they can could do, or what they think is best. I mean he could have come in, and said some of the bricks may be broken. So, what do you want us to do if they are? I mean bricks don’t cost that much. I would have said get some new bricks, but no they took the ones all chipped up, broken up, ones with the mortar all stuck on them. It was all lop sided. I did make him come back, and straighten up the chimney cap, because he had it lop sided. It was just a mess. I got a couple of prices. It was average. Everyone was going about the same. Give or take a few hundred. Again, the furnace work is great. I would give the guy who installed the furnace an A, he was excellent, but then when it came to the chimney company that they sub-contracted with he came in he put the vent going from the furnace to the chimney liner on upside down, and I had an inspector come in. The inspector said that wasn’t going to pass. So, they had to come back in, and reinstall it. So, it just kind of made the whole deal a little sour. I felt AJ Michaels could have been more supportive with the chimney work, and referred me to that, well we have another guy that’s going to do it, and he does a great job. He did my chimney at my house, and I wanted to say I wonder what yours looks like, because it was a mess, and they didn’t even care. They didn't come out, and say these guys are working for us, we like this. They never came back. After he got his money, they just went on about their business, but that guy who put the furnace, and water heater in, he was just excellent. It was actually pretty. I wouldn’t use them again in the future. If I could get that man to install something, sure, but overall company wise, they left me hanging, brought that shoddy guy in here.

I was very pleased with the experience. Before selecting a company to do the job, I got written estimates from AJ Michaels and BGE Home. AJ Michaels offered the better price. I picked a middle-of-the-line Carrier heat pump. The total cost of the job was about $6600, which included a $300 manufacturer's rebate. AJ MIchaels required !/3 deposit with the remainder due on completion of the job. About a week before the job, 2 employees from the company did a "walk through" to see exactly how my house was laid out and to determine what supplies they would need. On the day of the walk through, I expressed a desire to get the installation done earlier than the promised date if an opening became available. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a call from the company 2 days later to offer me an earlier day, which I immediately accepted. On the day of the job, the 2 employees who did the installation arrived promptly at the agreed upon time, and completed the job in about 8 hours. They were professional, took pains to ensure that they did not dirty the carpeting in my house and answered all my questions. I would not hesitate to use them again or to recommend them to others.

We needed a repair on our boiler, which they handled very well, and just charged the $125 standard price for a service call. We also needed a quote for PM on our boiler, which was harder to get in terms of their communication and timeliness wasn't as good, and price was high.

I think their price was on the high side for the work they did. They were late every single day. They were professional.

Went well. Did have some problems with boiler and new thermostat, but they were corrected very quickly and I have not had any problems since.

The repair was straight forward and required slightly less than an hour. However, no attempt was made to recaulk the space between the toilet and the floor and I don't know if other plumbers to do this finishing touch. Regarding the cost, I can say that the home service call charge was $79 and the diagnosis fee was $79 and the remainder the materials' cost. The repair was guaranteed for30 days.

Was able to schedule and complete work same day. Very professional and performed quality work promptly.

He had to do snake out a diffucult blockage and reseal the wax seal. It took a while, but he managed to avoid having to access the opening at the ground level which would have entailed removing siding. His persistance and help in avoiding something a lot more involved was a relief. AJ Michaels sent someone out right away and this was a big relief too. I would recommend their services to friends and family.

The cleaning rag was not removed. Presumably it was dislodged enough to flow down through the system and out of the house, but who knows? Serviceman was courteous but unable to catch it. I would caution customers to have charges explained very carefully in advance. I was told there would be a $79 "show up" fee, but was truly shocked when presented with a $404 bill for less than an hour's work (and involving no power equipment)! The plumber used a hand-held snake and worked for about 20-30 min. on it, to no avail. That cost $285 (in addition to the $79). Then, for a slow-moving drain cleanout in the sink taking about 10 min., the charge was $40. I had no problem with that. Total: $404. I felt I was ripped off. I balked, loudly . . . they did remove the $79, so the final bill was $325. There was no "time out" written on my copy of the invoice; however, when I called later to question their fee structure, I was told their copy of the bill had a "time out" on it. So it was written in after I was given my copy. Their "time out" meant that they were claiming the work took an hour. It did not. It was more like 45-50 min. In any case, $285 for the work done and time it was done in seems excessive to me. I don't know if $285 is standard for a "secondary line cleaning," but if so, I'd say we customers need to form some plumbing cooperatives and start getting these prices down.

They sent the wrong person, on the wrong day, at the wrong time. While we had requested a consult on possibly changing ductwork or even adding another zone to our home they sent someone who was a technician who deals with fixing problems with compressors and knows nothing about "bigger issues". He told us that the "right guy" was on vacation until next week. He arrived the day before scheduled at 7:30 in the morning (while I wasn't yet dressed and my husband was in the shower). We can't attest to whether they could do a good job if the correct person showed up but for folks who work it's pretty stressful to have such unreliability about appointments. While I can't say I'd never use them (hence the "yes" response previously) I think I'll try someone else first.

The entire experience was wonderful. Scheduling staff called and told us they had a team on the way. The service team of Kyle & DJ were wonderful. They explained the problem and fixed it. Simple, direct, easy. I will use them again!
