Richard's Tree Care

Tree Service

About us

Yes, we admit it. We’re tree huggers. Given the amount of attention normally paid to our leafy friends, it’s a wonder some don’t have an inferiority complex. We’ve been giving the trees and shrubs of Ann Arundel County and surrounding areas a lot of TLC for nearly 30 years. We know what they need to thrive and show off their natural beauty. Richard’s Tree Care has three full crews and three estimators. So we’re easily able to keep up with the demand for our services. Check out some of the information and tips on our website and then call us to talk about your trees.

We had a leaning tree in danger of hitting our deck. They came out quickly, and took it down without a hitch.

I contacted five tree removal services for estimates. Richard's Tree Care was the only one who has yet to provide me with an estimate. I do not know what the problem is. I initially attempted to establish an appointment by using the online form on their website. After three or four days of not hearing from them, I decided to contact them by telephone. I did get hold of someone and set up an appointment. The guy came out. Took my list of what was to be done. We went around the yard discussing each tree. At the end, he said he would email me the estimate. I asked if he had my email address. He assured me that the office had it and my telephone number. I waited five days; emailed the office, and still have not heard from them. But, I had to move on. I believe that I gave them ample time to respond, but they chose not to or their communication system is not operating properly. Don't know. Don't care at this point.
Description of Work: I needed four large dead trees removed from my back yard and extensive pruning on trees both back and front. I contacted Richard's Tree Care for an estimate.

We got three estimates and Richard's was the least expensive by about $1,600. Disparity gave pause. But Richard's was the only service we contacted that had reviews on Angie's List and they were positive. They assessed the situation, gave an estimate, Dan provided their insurance certificate along with his phone number, scheduled the service, and showed up early on the date. Then they took down the tree, chipped the debris, and ground the stump. Though the ground was soft, there was no damage to the lawn - they used mats. Left some sawdust that quickly dissipated. Three polite, professional people on the crew. Used their not-really-loud chipper sparingly - didn't keep it going all day. Appreciated that. Work was very carefully done. They cracked the cap on the neighbor's fence and replaced it immediately with no hassle. Pleased with the service - would use again.
Description of Work: Richard's took down a silver maple that had outlived its life-span and was in danger of coming down during major storms.

I have been using Richard's Tree Service since I have moved here 14 years ago. I am a Tree Huger and take cutting down trees seriously. I save trees as much as I can. Hence the White Pine. Richard knows that about me and over the years has sent a guy that specializes in treating the ground and the tree with nutrients and oils...to keep it healthy. The tree bounces back and is saved yet another year. This year I got an estimate in the mail. I called about it and he said it's time. I called 3 other companies just incase and they all agreed it must come down. It is a risk at this point. I called Richards back and scheduled an appt. They said the following week and will call to confirm exact date. They called me in the morning on Friday and said they had an open window. I told them Im ready. (P.S. I did contact my HOA to inform them of the dead tree... and stay within my bylaws. It's within 20' of house so I was fine). Richard's removed all the bird houses... from around the tree and started. They did a quick and amazing job. It was raked up, ground up, cleaned up in just short of 2 hours. It was a huge tree. I had no needles left on the branches and even most of the branches snapped off. The trunk was becoming rotten under the bark and I didn't even know that. They were able to scrap a big dent in the trunk with their bare hands. I was so glad Richard's keeps an eye on my property. He has done that over the years. I was saving another tree in the back yard and he said it was time. I agreed. When the tree came down it was rotten in the inside with ants...bugs and a hole in the core. It was a risk and could have easily came down on the houses and cars. He really watches out for unsafe trees. I'd never use anyone else.

The crew waited, as I had requested, for a cold day so the ground was frozen. The arrived as promised and put down mesh plates to further reduce damage to the yard, which was inaccessible by truck. They neatly took down the trees which dangled over our house and took away the pieces. On my request they left the maple logs and cut them into 18" pieces for fire wood. Everything else they took and did a great job. Very happy.

I have a lot of trees in my backyard many of which have died over the years. Recently two more died and one other appeared to be dying and I was thinking about calling a tree service. I was in a local car wash in January and Richard, wearing a shirt with his business logo, was there as well. I had seen his trucks in our neighborhood and and asked for his card, but he offered to come over right away. After inspecting my yard, he recommended removing two other trees as well - one was diseased and the other was leaning towards the house. We have had several trees come down over the years due to storms. He gave me a quote for the 5 trees ($2800.00). However, I decided to wait until spring to see if any other trees needed to be removed. I called him in early May and he came out again - I asked about taking a 6th tree down because it was also leaning towards the house. He also noted that a maple in front of my house was having some problems as well and recommended trimming and fertilization (which I have had to do previously over the years). One thing about the county I live in is that if you live within a 1000' feet of the water, you need to get a permit to remove the trees. I have gotten bids from tree services in the past some have told me I did not need a permit, when in fact I did. Richard raised the issue (I did not have to ask) and he took care of getting the permit (there is no cost). It took about a week to obtain. I have a somewhat steep slope down the side of my house to get to my back yard. When his crew came they laid down matting to protect the grass - they use a sort of mini-lift to get the larger cut-up tree trunk parts out. (I used a service a couple of years go who did not use mats and they really tore up the lawn). I was surprised that they were able to remove all 6 trees in a day - they showed up on time and worked until they finished and did a good job cleaning up - even my neighbors were impressed!

I contacted Richard's for an estimate and compared it with two other estimates. The job involved the removal the 5 large trees. Richard's was close to the lowest bid but more importantly he had the proof of insurance in hand and clearly had the experienced personnel the equipment to efficiently and safely handle the job. They arrived the next week and I could not have been more pleased with their operation. It was all like a ballet with a crew of 5 who accomplished the job with great skill and professionalism. They reached most ot the trees with a 70 ft bucket extension and had a chipper that could handle 18 inch logs -- amazing to see in action. They were very friendly and accomidating. They finished the job in less than one day while the other estimates felt at least two days would be necessary. Their cleanup was more than I expected. When they left, everything looked the same except the 5 trees were gone
Description of Work: The job involved the removal the 5 large trees. They were located on a wooded slope in back of my house and clearly a danger to the house should a storm come through. Three were tulip poplars about 80 feet tall and two had some rot at the base -- a bad sign. I was most concerned about danger to my house but wanted damage minimized to neighboring vegetation.

I contacted Richard's and Richard showed up within a day to write me an estimate on 8/23/11. The bid was competitive and he also provided a copy of his insurance. Richard seemed knowledgeable so the next day I called the office to let them know we wanted the work completed. The woman I spoke to said Richard had not yet turned in his paperwork but she would call me back to get on the schedule. Several days went by and there was no response so I called again and the woman did not remember me so I had to go through the whole scenario again - she again advised when Richard turned in the paperwork she would call. Needless to say I never received a call. I called back about a month later (now following the late August Hurricane) and was advised they are now backed up with work but she would call me in a month and put me on the schedule - advising RIchard would honor whatever estimate he provided. She had no record of the estimate as apparently Richard never turned it in and following my last conversation I never heard from them again.

My experience with Richard (great to talk to!) his wife Christy and their company was fantastic from start to finish. I called, got an estimate within a day or two and the work scheduled and done within a week. I received a certificate of insurance with the estimate and a personal guarantee from Richard that if I didn't like the work, I didn't have to pay. Now that's integrity (and confidence!)! Henry and the crew came early and did a great job. He came and got me if they had any questions about what needed done and took me around my yard on a walk-thru both before they started and when they finished (before they left). They cleaned up completely and I couldn't be more pleased with the work and the price.

I received a written estimate along with a copy of the liability insurance certificate. The work was completed the next week for the estimated price. They had to take apart a section of the fence and use part of the neighbor's driveway to access the backyard with their equipment. They did a great job cleaning up so when they were finished you could not even tell they had been there. I would definitely use them again.

They came out in May. They didn't charge us. They come out once a year and check our trees on our property. It's probably a year that I'm using them. They are just very reliable and honest. I feel that they are very fine. I don't know how to compare them with anyone else. We had a tree that was blown down in the terrible storm that we had last fall. They came out and did work for a less charge for us and so we stuck with them ever since.

They did just great; from prompt return of phone call, to estimate and work done. Give 'em a call!
Description of Work: We recently installed a 16 unit solar electric panel array on our western facing roof. We had a large Silver Maple and a large Blue Spruce casting shadows on part of the array. We needed them both trimmed to open the line of sunlight. We researched Tree Services on this list, found several A rated companies, called 5 - got 3 estimates, ranging from $550 to $1,230. Richard's was $750. My wife and I both liked his presentation (careful he'll talk yer leg off! :) ), his honesty and down to earth manner. We needed some other tree work, wound up having 4 large trees totally removed in our back yard, plus a diseased Crab Apple tree in the front (they cut it and removed the stump) one day, during a heavy downpour - and had to come back the next day. We needed a sunny day to see the Maple and Spruce shadows. They used a bucket truck to carefully - and artistically - trim back the Maple and Spruce. The prior day, at our request, they left us a large pile of wood chips, about 40 wheelbarrows worth, which I spread on our back lawn. We live atop ancient sand dune, and just can't get enough humus (good vegetative top soil). They have two teams; both smart and hard working with years of experience that shows. This Fall I'll roto-till the chips in, and let Mother Nature do her thing. Maybe, after years of trying, next year we'll have some good growing soil for our back lawn. Overall we thought the revised $1,800 cost we negotiated was both honest and fair. They know their business, owner and crew alike. Good guys. We are planning to use them again, to transplant a volunteer 6 foot Southern Red Oak from our front yard to a side yard. It's some Squirrel's lost lunch!

Richard's responded to our request for an estimate. He provided a written copy of his liability insurance policy for us to verify. His price of $500 was among the lowest quoted, although several competitors offered the same price. We finally selected Richard's based on the demeanor and sense of professionalism of the estimator and the responsiveness that they exhibited throughout the transaction. His crew of three arrived promptly for the appointment and explained how they would proceed. The dead tree was at the property line and the residue fell into both yards. Richard's crew had the old tree down very quickly and cleaned up both yards very thoroughly. Overall, a very positive experience. I'd highly recommend Richard's Tree Service to anyone needing help with tree removal and will gladly use them again if we need another tree removed.

Richard's Tree Service came out and trimmed 3 large silver maples in our front yard. They were one of 4 estimates we got before finally chosing them. As far as pricing goes they were average to the other companies. The service was fast and they informed us of more work we needed done giving us the option to do it ourselves or have them continue working. The only problem we had was it took several months to get our bill from them as they had lost it. Once we contacted the company they found it and mailed it our right away.
