We hired CP while we were living overseas to prime, complete wall repair, and potentially paint the home that we had tenants living in but to which we would be moving back into. Once we were local again, we realized in talking to neighbors that we were paying a high price for the services provided. We hired CP to do the wall repair and priming but ended up finding another vendor to complete the finish painting. We believe the wall repair and priming work completed by CP was just OK, and did not justify the price. There were several places around the house that were sloppily done and we didn't realize until after the fact that they had painted-over all the adjustable wall vents in the bedrooms upstairs, rendering them inoperable. Again, not something that I would have expected given the prices charged. I don't mind paying a little more for great work, but this was not our experience with CP. They also underestimated how much time they needed to do the work and we ended up with movers bringing stuff in while having to work around the painters. Ultimately we ended up hiring a painter that charged about $4,000 less for the interior finish paint job (note, I did not include the CP estimate for interior painting above as we did not end up hiring them for this, it was about $12,000).
Description of Work: Washed (because of a smoking tenant)/ primed, and repaired walls. After this work, we did not bring them back to complete the interior painting job and we hired someone else.

e was replaced. All in all, Steve did a very professional job from start to finish. The wall paint matched flawlessly. The outside painting also matched with the color on the cantilever. Steve, had the knack of coming on time, doing the work, informing me of the progress, and then doing the work. Each day, the work space and the working debris was removed so that the area (laundry room and steps) could be used. Definitely a firm I would use again. Top notch firm.
Description of Work: Provider repaired and painted three areas that had been damaged in the process of installing insulation. Work required repairing the damaged wallboard in two places: the ceiling in the laundry room, the ceiling and wall in a closet, and seven small holes that had been punched in a cantilever at the rear of the townhouse. Additionally, a damp spot in the closet wall board was replaced after the wall was sealed with waterproofing materials.

When the owner James first came to my home to do an estimate, he was on time, polite, and very attentive to my questions and concerns. I told him that I was on a budget, but I also was willing to pay for a good job. He quoted several different options ala carte. I was so impressed with the reviews on Angie?s List, James, and the price that and I eventually decided that I?d do half, and then have Chesapeake Painting Company do half. I didn?t get any other quotes. A week before the work began I asked James to come out again, and to his credit it was the third visit. He brought his foreman Donnie along to show him exactly what we were going to do and we set up a time for them to start work on Monday. I was very happy with the pre-job work that was done to make sure everyone was on the same page. The guys showed up promptly on Monday to power wash the house, completed the work quickly, and then left so things could dry. Unfortunately the bleach solution they used on the house was so strong it killed several of my landscape plants and discolored my driveway... oh well. Everyone returned Tuesday, and work began. While the foreman?s (Donnie) composure left a lot to be desired (constant smoking that wafted into my house all day, loud yelling, and loud music from a boom box), everything seemed to be progressing well. I looked around to see how things went at the end of the day. Everything looked pretty good, but on the first coat the guys had failed to consistently paint between the shingles, which allowed the old (red) color to show through. Additionally they painted over some areas where James and I had agreed they?d replace the cedar shingles, so I sent in an e-mail with some pictures to let them know my concerns. The office manager e-mailed me back the next morning and said she?d printed out the pictures and given them to the foreman. Great! I left out more paint for the fellas on Wednesday and work continued. It was at this time that I noticed that when they rolled on paint it dripped pretty heavily from between the gaps, which left big globs of paint drips on the courses below, as well as hard paint drips on the upper courses. Also, there were still lots of areas where the gaps between shingles hadn?t been painted?and I?d already expressed my concerns about that. They attempted to repair/replace the shingles James and I had spoken about at the gable ends, but the work just looked awful. So bad, in fact, that I wished they hadn?t even attempted it; it was better before they repaired it. But what really did me in was as I walked around the house I started finding cigarette butts?at least a half dozen of them?littered around my yard. Then I found an area in my yard where the guys had been washing brushes that was littered with huge paint globs and muddy to the point of being swampy. The more I looked around, the more messes I started to find. They dripped paint on a lower wall and attempted to just roll over it, but the colors don?t match. The foreman?s truck leaked oil on my driveway. They left piles of debris from cleaning the gutters (part of what I had asked for in the quote) lying everywhere. And, they didn?t repair the shingles on the back side of the house?even after I had just sent in pictures just the night before, asking them not to forget. Now while I understand that some of this messiness is to be expected with any job, when I put all the little things together I was pretty annoyed. I debated saying nothing and dealing with it myself, but I eventually decided to try and call, despite it being 8 p.m. I didn?t get an answer or voicemail, so I sent in an e-mail listing the items I was concerned about, and offering to be available on the phone that night. I never got an answer from anyone at the company about anything in that e-mail. Not even a phone call. The crew showed up 45 minutes late the next day (I?d gotten up at 6 a.m. so I could be ready for their arrival?they said they?d be there at 7:15 a.m. the day before). The foreman did walk me around at one point to show me the areas they?d taken care of that I?d mentioned, but said he had no idea how to get into some of the gaps in between some of the shingles and there was no way he could make a better repair on the replacement shingles. I handed him a shortcut brush I?d been using to get between the shingles, which he returned to me completely trashed. Two hours later they had vanished, without even saying a word to me. I called the office to let them know that the work was still unsatisfactory and at that point they asked me if I wanted them to come back out again or have the work discounted. I told them that as long as they didn?t send the original crew with Donnie out I was happy to be available the next day. The second crew arrived the next morning and was head and tails above the first crew in almost every regard. They set about fixing the areas of concern. They did replace several shingles and attempt a repair of the ones the previous crew did, and the shingle repairs looked much better. They removed the globs of paint on the siding and repainted those areas. They were polite, well-composed, and wonderful to work with. Still, when it was all said and done, I still had areas of my white soffits and window trim over-painted with grey paint, and the shingle repair above my front door still just wasn?t right. I?m also not convinced I got the two coats I was promised on the trim, but I have no way of proving that I didn?t. This was entirely the fault of the first crew. I am convinced if Donnie wasn?t involved that my experience would have been much different. I offered to pay them and have the whole affair out of our hair for a 10% discount off the total and be done with it?and they agreed. Look, I get it; my house is old and the shingles are in pretty bad shape. It will never look perfect, and nor do I expect it to. But I do expect some effort, a little attention to detail, some professionalism, and if you tell me you can replace and repair shingles correctly, then do it correctly?or don?t offer to do it. Or tell me you?re not qualified to do it. And heck, maybe this was an isolated event. After all, I chose the company based on its great Angie?s List reviews. All that said, the owner James did agree to a discounted rate, and called me personally to apologize. The office manager always did whatever she could to try and make me happy. While I don?t want James' business to suffer because of one bad job I also don?t want anyone else to have to deal with Donnie like I did. If they send Donnie to your house, tell them to send someone else.

James Guth lives up to his eponym as a "gentleman painter": he does what he says he will do, when he says he will do it, at the level of care and quality he promises, and uses well-supervised employees (not subcontractors) to accomplish the work he takes on. The team was careful and efficient, and I can't praise the work of his wallpaper expert, Ashley Cademartori, enough. I've done all of this work myself, and know firsthand how tedious and difficult it can be (especially in a Pulte-constructed home in which the walls are far from straight!). Lisa, Chesapeake's office manager, is a pleasure to work with, and keeps customers informed every step of the way. I was delighted to see how careful the crew was to mask and shroud my home, so that the plaster dust was contained on the first floor, and how thoroughly they vacuumed my hardwood flooring to remove any residue. I am hoping to sell this home in the near future, but I will not hesitate to call James to prepare my next one for move-in . . . I can endorse Chesapeake Painting wholeheartedly. (My only disappointment was that I didn't get to see James up on a ladder holding a paintbrush in his tux firsthand!)

From the very first contact they were very professional. They replied immediately to my initial inquiry and set up an appointment. James came out and asked what I wanted them to do. He then looked at all the rooms and questioned me about specifics. He promised an estimate which was in my email within 48 hours. I signed the contract and we set a start date. I made an appointment with the decorator to go over colors and they began on Monday right at 8. The two man crew was very polite and courteous. James came that morning and went over all the instructions with the crew and me, pointing out what things were remaining on the walls and what was to be removed. The crew then proceeded to move furniture and cover everything with plastic. They spent the first day prepping the walls and actually that continued everyday. On Tuesday one more joined the crew. They began upstairs and did their best not to inconvenience me. They worked until about 5 with only a lunch break every day. Day 3 the two men were back and they finished the upstairs so I could move up there while they did the rest of the rooms. The third man joined them on the last day. They were very tidy and cleaned up every day and made sure that I would be able to sleep in my bedroom and watch TV in the living room. Before leaving they went over every wall again and found things to touch up that I didn't see. They did two coats of paint everywhere and the results are beautiful. They left things cleaner than when they came. I have no idea how their cost compares to others but I would definitely use them again without hesitation.
Description of Work: Painted all the walls and ceilings in my living and dining rooms and kitchen along with the two bedrooms upstairs, stairways and landing. I am in a split level so that was the first and second floors.

Superb work. Painted shutters to match the paint of the new front door. Removed all shutters and reinstalled, correcting some fasteners at no additional charge. Not a drop of paint spilled. Everything done on schedule just as I asked. They identified all areas of rotted trim without direction. Re-caulked all areas. I can't say enough about the excellent quality.

James showed up to the house on time to discuss the work that needed to be done and provided a quick and timely estimate by the next day. He also provided on the estimate additional work that I would like to get done in the future. I was happy with the costs and scheduled the work to be done with Lisa from the office. I had various questions on paint colors and finishes and she was always timely in providing a response via email. James and his crew showed up to my house about 15 minutes late but it was no fault of their own because they had been in a little fender bender on the way to my house. Lisa did call me to tell me that the crew was running a little late because of the minor accident which i really appreciated ( I cant tell you how many times I have had contractor arrive late but never call to give me a head up). James and his crew preformed a great job and took extra care to protect my existing walls, floors and furniture. They also did a great job cleaning up the house before they left. I have worked for an Architecture firm for 18 years in construction management and i have seen some unsatisfactory painting projects by various contractors. With that being said, James and his team did a great job and I would highly recommend them to any of my friends and family.

This project was a large family room with lots of windows and trim, and I wanted it a very deep blue. The painters were incredibly careful and particular with both the prep (key to any paint job) and the application of the deep blue eggshell finish and the white trim. They were dissatisfied with the overall effect of the finish and asked to come back the next day to apply another coat for the best effect. The final result is stunningly beautiful. They are also truly "the gentleman painters" as they advertise, and are very pleasant to have around the house. I am Southern, and haven't been called "Ma'am" this much since the last time I was in NC.
Description of Work: This was my second time using Chesapeake Painting. The first was in March, when they painted the entire interior of a home, including the garage. That experience was so positive that I called them again for a single room project at my home.

Chesapeake Painting did an outstanding job of performing the work contracted in an exceptionally professional and timely manner. They were highly communicative with questions and adjustments to the job. James was exceptionally quick to help with estimates, pricing, and scheduling. His team, including Lisa, were outstanding at quick communication and completion of the planning process and job with complete professionalism. The work went very well, the men were on time each day, cleaned up at the end of the day and we very quiet and professional. We had two men working a full day the first day, three men the second day, two men on part of the third day (due to the snow storm), two men the fourth day and two men on the fifth day, which ended just after noon. It was a lot of work, but now everything looks clean and fresh. We appreciate James and his team and will plan on using Chesapeake Painting services in the future. They are very kind and professional, I would trust the young men who worked in our home, even if I had to be out for the day.

Workers always punctual and polite, and cleaned up mess. Job took 3 days to complete. (I also used an electrician recommended by Chesapeake Painting to install spot lights in my liv. rm. ceiling.) Painters spackled drywall around spot lights that were installed and did nice job. The only real problem I had was a language barrier with painters who were Hispanic. I thought they spoke more English and then realized they didn't understand me that well. The painters painted closet doors which was not part of my contract. I was very worried as I was concerned about the costs. Chesapeake did not charge me for that extra painting. The bedrooms look very nice. There was only one small spot in a corner where some paint dripped but minor and I fixed it myself. I would recommend this company. The owner was out of the country at the time I used this company. I think the Foreman may have been stretched thin which may have attributed to the communication issues. The owner of Chesapeake Painting referred me to a plumber to help me deal with the leak in my ceiling prior to having my condo painted, and an electrician to replace lighting for me. I had to remove a track light were my ceiling was damaged from a leak. Both the plumber and Electrician were punctual, professional and very honest. I was able to coordinate the plumbing repairs and light installation with the painting company and consider that a real PLUS. I don't know if the cost was average but the referrals to a honest plumber and electrician that were willing to coordinate with the painting I had scheduled was a tremendous help to me. I would use this company again. Thank you Chesapeake Painting.
Description of Work: painted 2 spare bedrooms, including sanding walls and dents in bedrooms, painted 3 new bedroom doors. We had wallpaper on the wall of our powder room that had been up for about 20 years. The edges at the seams were starting to pull up. Since this was in multiple spots, we decided to just remove the wallpaper. I've tried to do this myself in the past but ended up damaging the wallboard and creating an even bigger job. I saw this deal on Angies List and decided to let the pros do it. We were not disappointed. The service was scheduled quickly on a day and time that was convient for us. Arrived at the scheduled time. Was very professional. Answered all our questions before starting the work. Finished in a reasonable amount of time. Even filled in all the holes from where we had things hanging on the walls. No damage to the wallboard. All I had to do was add a primer and paint the walls and the room looked like new. Would definetly recommend Chesapeake Painting Serices.

I was very impressed. James came out only a few hours after I had first called to give me an estimate. They were flexible when I needed to reschedule the work to start and advised me on how to deal with a difficult insurance company. Everything looks well-done and the team even repainted part of the bathroom for me. I would definitely recommend in the future.
Description of Work: Performed ceiling repair caused by leak in neighbor's bathroom. Replaced drywall, re-did entire bathroom ceiling, and painted.

From James Guth, the owner, to his crew, the service and results were top notched. I would definitely hired them again. Tony, the painter who did my job was an excellent painter who took pride in his work. He was also polite, wasted no time, and cleaned up thoroughly.
Description of Work: A small piece of wood siding on the side of my house was peeling due to my dog scratching and biting the wood. Tony of Chesapeake Painting Services power sanded, primed, and painted the wood. It has never looked better. He spent hours doing the initial prep and it looks it.

Beautiful workmanship! Showed up on time and worked hard without stopping until the job was done. James Guth is very professional and a delight to work with. I was so pleased with the outcome that I immediately asked him to work on another larger project in our home.
